101 CookBooks Develops iPhone-Friendly Recipe Site

iphonerecipes.jpg

The folks at 101 Cookbooks have developed an iPhone-friendly versions of their website to better accommodate its native screen resolution (HVGA). Don’t ask me why they thought it necessary given that Safari already enables full web browsing, negating the need for such “mobile web” content. Buy hey, who am I to argue.

eMusic Seduces iPhone Users with 35 Free Songs

emu-topresource.jpg

Hey iPhone users, eMusic has your number! Well not exactly. They won’t be calling you on your phone, but they are however giving away 35 free (yes, that’s free as in beer) tracks for iPhone users who sign up for a trial membership of eMusic’s popular music service. This offer is supposedly “no strings attached’ meaning you can sign up, download your free tracks, then cancel and still keep my your music. Not that I endorse such behavior. Looks around nervously

Sign up now and they’ll also throw in a free hat! No, sorry no hat either. I am such a tease today.

Apple Stores Will Offer 25 iPhone Accessories at Launch Time, and Drool Aprons

iphone yummy

Apple Stores will be stocking an assortment of 25 available iPhone accessories this Friday during the big launch extravaganza. Most of these accessories are limited to cases and screen protectors, though I wonder if iPhone’s screen even supports screen protectors at all. We’ll have to wait for confirmation on that.

The company will also be offering its Bluetooth Headset for a hefty price of $129. Ouch!

iPhone Has Entered The Country

A shipment departed from Hong Kong, arrived safely, and is apparently in customs now. In other news, anything with a camera or net connection is forbidden from Apple Store stockroom premises as of yesterday.

Hype Hoedown? Hype Hootenanny?

Hype-1

It’s seriously a smorgasbord of hype out there. I read more daily than I can shake a stick at. If hype was gold I’d be a leprechaun.

Engadget Shakes Down Tester for Opinions

Engadget-1

Engadget got one of the 200 iPhone testers to spill some beans about features of the iPhone, and the tester told Engadget what they thought of it. The important snippets are mostly about the keyboard and text input:

  • overall: “disappointing.” The tester had troubles with two-thumb input after trying “a number of days;” the iPhone video up at Apple says “a week and you’ll be fine.” I have no idea who’s right here.
  • “It won’t replace a BlackBerry. It’s not good for text input. It’s just not a business product.”
  • text correction needs a bigger dictionary for proper names [they don't mention if it finds dictionary proper nouns from the address book, which is important]
  • keypresses require strong force and “needs some getting used to”

It would seem that Engadget’s leaker works in the Obvious department, which should help Steve Jobs track him down:

  • Apple Bluetooth Headset will be $100+
  • page loads are slow on EDGE network
  • the screen smudges when you put your fingers on it

The din about the keyboard is really starting to reach full force. There’s no doubt in my mind that it’s going to lose points in reviews because of people not being able to master it out-of-the-box.

Speaking personally, I’m ridiculously excited and nervous about a software keyboard. Less for unused buttons and more for the display is a win in my book, but you still need to be able to use it. If it’s about as fast as T9, I’ll be fine. If I want to write a magnum opus, I’ll use a keyboard. That is to say, a hardware one, not a software one; I have a secret hope that Bluetooth keyboards will someday be available (or that they’ll work out of the box).

Breaking: iPhone Shipments Now Arriving Across the US

ups.jpg

AppleInsider is reporting that initial volume shipments of iPhone began arriving at drop terminals across the US, in preparation for distribution on Friday. This means iPhone launch plans are on track with no delays in sight.

People familiar with the matter say the intrinsically valuable freight was carried inbound by a certain Hong Kong-based air courier, which services Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. The early arrival is to assure the cargo can clear customs with enough time to handle unexpected delays, those people said. Awaiting the freight at each location on Sunday were armed personnel, who were reportedly hired by Apple through its courier’s ground handling agent and then cleared by the Transportation Security Administration. Armed guards are extremely unusual for freight coming out of the Asian sector, those familiar with the matter explained, and are typically reserved for shipments containing riches such as gold and diamonds.

Some ZDNet Employee Playing Hard To Get

I found a weird anti-pro-iPhone article at ZDNet. He’s going to get one, he might stand in line, but he’s not really going to commit to one until they add six features that he wants. You know, if you’re willing to STAND IN LINE for an iPhone, you’re frickin committed, already. I’ll chalk it up to him wanting to write a pro-iPhone article but his editors want him to write some negative stuff to, you know, stand out or something. Highlights of his want list include more time with grandpa and a unicorn.

Apple Demonstration Video

Apple has posted a new demonstration video of a bunch of iPhone features. It’s very good; it’s as much a training video as much as it is an informational video. My wife has a smartphone (one of my old ones), but doesn’t really know how to use it, as there’s no decent way to jump in. At any rate, I strongly recommend watching it if you’re considering purchasing an iPhone. update: there’s a decent writeup of it here.
