Okay I am not a"techie" by any means. What I want to know is the iphone TOO complicated for someone who does not really want to become one? I am thinking of buying one just for music, better video quality, plus bigger screeen, and phone all in one. I will probably check my e- mail...occasionally. I need a 3 day option not 30 minutes. Just not a slave to the e-MALE...How is the camera check out. I do take a lot of spontaneous pics and video with my phone, and noist importantly the phone reception.

I just did and independent study of major cell phone companies, taking advantage of the 30 days trial (was off contract with Verizon). Tried T-mobile, Sprint, Verizon again, trying the new LG tv phone (absolutely amazing picture), and finally going to Cincular last. I was trying to hold out to try the iphone in my 30 day trial, but they kept moving release date, so now I am stuck with cincular or have to pay to get out of contract. At any rate, the fewest dropped calls winner would have to be Verizon. My current sync phone keeps putting itself in 911 mode...and I am unanable to call even cincular itself at these times. Eventually I get service back...after powering on and off my phone a few times. My concern is does the service equal the phone? I have heard Apple is going to release the iphone minus the "phone". With the reception I am receiving, I like that idea.

Yes, works with iphone (I'm sooo enthralled!) :)

Ok, I tried Earthcomber and they already have a iPhone-tuned safari site. Very nice - looks "native". Since we can't get real GPS, it's especially handy to have all their emulation options. And it's nice to get above all the mapping. That's pretty, and fun, but with Earthcomberit’s a total informational upgrade from map-focused programs like Google maps – it’s like Earthcomer was meant for the iphone.

It’s clean, easy, noticably fast considering we're not on 3G. If you've never done Earthcomber, you have to be ready to think of it as sort of like personal radar - it looks for things in batches that you can tune (or delete, or compose). The cool thing is that you not only get the necessities nearby but also my personal points of interest and things like old mansions and dog parks I didn’t know were there. It basically, yes, "combs" the world around you. Or I should say, the US only. But then again, the iphone only works in the US, so that kinda takes care of that. It would be nice if they'd let you customize in the iPhone version, but you have to go over to the www.earthcomber.com if you want to set it up to pick your own stuff.

Nice articles Kent,

Came from the xv6700...all jacked up with after market programs, and a few other goodies. I think I'll miss the BT GPS reciever and MS Live Search the most. After tweaking and tuning it was awesome. The IPhone seems simple yet complete, if a few of the updates I've heard about materialize, I think it's gonna be one hell of a show! I feel comfortable that I made the right choice. Enjoy everyone!

Kent:
Thanks for a great review. Can you spend some time talking about how the iPhone works when calling into conference calls? I'd like to link back from my blog to yours to pick up any tips/frustrations/wows on how the iPhone works when dialing into, talking on, and shudder, multi-tasking while on a conference call. Also, would like to hear any feedback on what it like to dial into a CC when you need to put in a PIN code. I won't get my iPhone for another couple of months....just bought a house! Thanks to everyone for their input. Kent - this would be cool to make this a separate blog post! Thanks!

I'm only 1 day into it (and boy am I into it!) but I've already found the predictive auto-correction gets better with repetition. I have an unusual last name, and I didn't expect the iPhone to recognize it, but after a few entries, the device began to suggest the right spelling once I'd input the first few letters. I wonder if it might be reading my mind by next week!

Made the switch from a Treo 700p to the iPhone.

Data migration from the Palm Desktop software (Windows) to the iPhone has been very frustrating. It will only recognize MS Outlook in terms of sync-ing. So I have to export contacts and datebook entries from PD, import them into Outlook and then sync to the iPhone. WTF?

And like Brian C mentions I still don't know how to get all of my hundreds of Palm Desktop memos into the iPhone.

The iPhone itself is pretty cool. Will be better once I can get all of my info into it and can actually toss my 700p.

I made the switch from Treo to iPhone this weekend, and so far I'm happy. The music, mail, and web applications are far better than the Treo, but it seems some of the PDA applications are lagging behind. I was surprised not to find a search function for Calendar or Contacts, though Address Book and iCAL have great search tools on my Mac. Or did I just miss this? And does the Notes application sync with anything? I have lots of memos from my Treo that I would like to port over, is there a way to do that? I'd also like to see a document reader. Yeah, I can open xls, doc, and pdf files if they're mail attachments, but it's slow, and if the document has a lot of formatting, it doesn't come across very well. My last, and very minor peeve (since I'm not a Youtubie), is that the search function here never seems to be able to find videos I'm looking at on my Mac, no matter what I try for a search string.

All that said, it's gorgeous, and what it does, it does beautifully. I just hope they add a few more functional tweaks.
