Would really like to find out the information about the unlock being required by law. I've heard this before.

Actually, this may well be true. As I recall (and correct me if I am wrong), the DMCA requires that phone carriers unlock devices if they are asked to do so. Specifically, they can put restrictions on it (by saying that they will only do so if you move abroad or if you have been a customer for 90 days or more), but they are required, by law, to give you unlocking codes.

I can't remember exactly what section of the law deals with this, but I am almost certain that one could look this up online.

I actually tried to cancel my contract with AT&T! They wanted to charge me $175.00. I asked to have the phone unlocked if I paid the $175.00.....AT&T Declined to provide the code to unlock the phone. They told that they do not have these codes. I was instructed to return the phone to Apple. Apple wanted to charge me $139.99 restocking fee for them to take the phone back...what a rip off! seems AT&T and Apple really conspired long and hard before releasing the iPhone to hold the consumer down to the Two Year contract and to extort money from unsuspecting clients.

It's that simple? With all of the iHackers pounding on this device? LOL. Some people will post anything. I'm glad you, at least, ended your headline in a question mark. Perhaps a ;-D would have been more appropriate?

It might actually be true. In for example Germany Service Providers must unlock the phone against a "small" fee or at the end of the contract. This is in general done by entering a code like *132574632143# into the phone.

So there might be a loophole for unlocking the phone on this way :)
