Apple Launches iPhone Web Apps Directory. Developers LOL

Apple has quietly posted a Safari web app directory, similar to the one for Dashboard Widgets, featuring every available iPhone-optimized web 2.0 service or web app created by human hands. Ok, so these aren’t the apps we’re looking for, and there are dozens if not hundreds of directory sites in existence already, but let it never be said we iPhone users are in want of a good web browser. Right? crickets chirping

[Update] Amazingly this directory isn’t formatted for iPhone. Strange that Apple would build a web app directory for iPhone, designed to be accessed from a desktop.

This isn’t what the rumor mills have been talking about, is it? This has nothing to do with developers, its for us “normal” users……… right?

What a total waste of time. Web apps? On a device that’s using Edge technology? Wow, what’ll Apple think of next, offering improved dial up speeds to anyone who’s still using a 56k modem?

Sorry apple, but when it comes to “web apps” I have only one word for you: Blow me.

Give me real apps, don’t insult me with this web app bullshit.

Oh, be fair now. It’s formatted for the iPhone, there’s just not a “mobile/iPhone” version of the site as well. “What” you ask, “constitutes iPhone-formatting, if the site is not actually reversioned FOR the iPhone?” well… much the same way the Quicktime trailers website is “formatted” for the iPhone, right? Notice the difference in what is happening with the buttons.

On the iPhone, you can immediate launch the apps from the listings. From the desktop, you need to visit each wab app’s page before you can then view the web app. Apple recommends offering an iPhone “version” of websites as an ancilliary offering to a full-website, and they also recommend not “forcing” users to view one version over the other, which makes sense. As this is part of Apple’s website, I think it makes more sense that they release the directory FIRST, even if they release their on “iPhone” version of the directory sometime later.

Good things come to those who wait (they also all “come to an end”, but we’ll go with the rosier saying for now).

Oh Jason, you cut me to the quick. I did atone for my sins by formatting my site, didn’t I? And I love you too… in a tawdry heterosexual, homo erotic, platonic sort of way. ;)
