I don't use IM. Whenever I've tried, it become more instant annoyer than messenger and really interrupts my work flow. Push anything, be it email, IM, etc. is such a mixed blessing for productivity...

It's gotten to the point where I'd almost rather people call me...

The fact that jabber support isn't yet on the iphone is pretty annoying. Keeping the IP connection going must suck down a ton of battery, because porting ichat to iphone would have taken apple a week or two.

My point was, and remains, simply that I don't see a future in device-specific protocols. Eventually, how we communicate will be irrelevant and all devices will be able to send and receive to each other.

I shouldn't be limited in email computers, SMS'ing handsets, etc. I should simply have a client that can send (whatever I want) to another client (whatever and where ever it is).

I'm not shooting for the lowest common denominator. I'm shooting for the future.

I don't netsend anymore, I won't SMS much in the future, I predict.

(And realize what $0.10 - $0.20 for 140 characters adds up to at volume -- the carrier is charging incredible rates for what are essentially limited technologies).

How galling the absence of IM on the iPhone must be to you then.

Just started listening to the podcast a few weeks ago.
In a recent podcast someone expressed a wish that carriers (or users?) would move away from non standard messaging implementations like SMS and MMS and just use the standard email.

This supposition that SMS and MMS are not standard is wrong. SMS has been around since 1992, and is part of the GSM standard. At this point SMS/txt messages are on CDMA carriers as well, since at least the CDMA 1x days.

Don't you know if Apple does not do it, it cant be a standard, and even if it is it automatically becomes legacy.

Remember, inside the RDF, ITS ALL GOOD.

Just started listening to the podcast a few weeks ago.

This supposition that SMS and MMS are not standard is wrong. SMS has been around since 1992, and is part of the GSM standard. At this point SMS/txt messages are on CDMA carriers as well, since at least the CDMA 1x days.

MMS has been around since at least 2001, and also comes standard in all GSM and CDMA phones these days. The point of an MMS is not to send a whole 3MP phone, but a small enough photo over the network to convey a message. With MMS you can also add any type of graphic, photo, sound or text. Both SMS and MMS are pushed to your phone

Email on the other hand does not come standard on every phone, whereas even cheepie low-end phones has MMS and SMS capability. Email requires a data connection which can be costly. SMS and MMS messages have a per message change, or come out of a bucket. Email capable phones don't necessarily imply that they get the content pushed to them. Finally, in fringe coverage areas, or in high volume times or locations you probably won't be able to get a data connection to send that email, but you can send an SMS.

I think it's a mistake to write of SMS and MMS like that.
I really hope that when apple releases the next 2.x release of the iPhone OS, they include a unified mailbox where you can see your pop/imap/exchange email AND your SMS/MMS/received over BT items.
