AT&T Speaks: iPhone 3G Selling Twice as Fast as Original!

Exclusive US iPhone 3G carrier AT&T announced their Q2 results yesterday, and during their conference call informed us of this staggering little factoid:
[S]ales of Apple’s iPhone 3G during the first twelve days were nearly double that of last year, this despite shortages that have seen backorders stretch one to three weeks at its retail stores.
We already knew Apple had sold 1,000,000 of their second-generation handsets in just 3 days (almost 25 times faster than the original iPhone 2G), but that was (I assume) a global number covering the 22 launch countries (and may have included units in partner channels). This quantity — while ironically not quantified — is US specific, and is impressive given that some pundits felt the all-important early adapters already had iPhones, and would get 2.0 for free, and so would likely have less incentive to upgrade. Maybe, maybe not. The $199 cost-of-entry could have triggered an even bigger flood of first time buyers who had balked at the previous price point.

I bought an original iPhone on the first day it came out. Waited in line and all that. Great time. Party atmosphere. I didn’t know that I was adapting to the new iPhone at such an early stage. I just adopted to the idea that this was the phone I had been waiting for all my life.

@yDNA,
I had the first gen unsupported in Canada, so getting the second gen all official-like was an easy decision.
@Blingbling,
Deepest and most sincere of apologies for misleading you dude, my base 7 logarithmics are weak

I guess that makes up for them being half the price.

I figured this would happen with the low price point. Still, kudos to Apple for executing this launch so well. Also I’ve called at&t stores and they said they would be out of stock till sometime September. Thank God I bought mine launch date. (I was the 1st in Orlando with an iPhone 3G…)

@ DaTechnologyKing, you mean ALL AT&T stores will be out of stock until September, or just the ones in Orlando? I’m hoping to get my iPhone 3G on Saturday.

BB Curve…..good luck. I hope you do. Around here (Lafayette, La.) it is “order and cross your fingers” time. I went to all 3 of my local stores on Saturday (the 12th) and got laughed at when I asked about getting one. All were out with no clue when any would be there. I placed my order, and waited. And WAITED. 10 days later, it came in. We hear around here that the delivery is now 21 days. With no end in sight, it could be months before you can just walk in and get one.

Man. Does it help if you live near a big city? I live east of Atlanta.
