I can tell that this is not the first time at all that you write about the topic. Why have you decided to write about it again?

The actual interface and the idea of syncing is excellent however the messing people around with the move from @mac.com @me.com has really been very badly thought out and managed.

If you had an old @mac.com email that has expired it still works as an apple ID and AIM ID. Yet someone may have taken the equivalent @me.com address. Threats to identity ?

Others who are fast moving or regular long time users get to keep both. Yet again they will now get 2 Apple ID's, two AIM accounts yet one mailbox......

This is crazy.

Why not just increase the number of user names by giving people a choice of which email they get @me.com, and @mac.com or even @iphone.com for example?

They could all use the same services and servers (eg smtp.mobileme.com, same interface) yet you would diversify the number of possible users names and users.

To further stop confusion and risk of identity confusion/theft:

Why offer Aliases - or address that can be recycled in the case of @me.com or not in the case of @mac.com?

Surely if someone wants to use a dodgy website they just do username+something@me.com and 1 user name can have infinite aliases.

A user name should be set and kept forever. If they dont pay the mailbox and server space disappears , but the user name is fixed. It makes sense.

I think this confusion of identities and user names is actually quite possible dodgy if not confusing.

I think this needs to be thought through, again, seriously.

What if I want to only use my .me account? Both .me and .mac were added automatically when I set up the iPhone. The result is that I get an email in both .me and .mac but I only want one email account. I just tried turning off my .mac Calendar and all my calendar entries were removed. How can I get the iPhone to sync my calendar (and contacts, etc.) entries using my .me account?

Setup a different smtp outgoing server in mail, outlook or the iphone and you can send from your current address using mobileme connectivity.

The only time you would send a youraddress@me.com email (instead of youraddress@gmail.com, if you are using the outgoing smtp gmail server) is if you send mail FROM me.com's web interface.

In fact, we use gApps at work to host our email, archive it and forward to our addresses@me.com, and use it like the postini offering. When we send from outlook, the iphone or mail on the mac we send through smtp.gmail.com, and it changes the outgoing email address from youraddress@me.com to youraddress@gmail.com.

Slick, and its synced across devices and platforms.

I'm looking for more webspace for my domain name, and MobileMe is very reasonably priced for what you get. If only I could use my GalleyTech.com e-mail with it.

I agree. Dot Mac isn't too bad and at least identifies my address as a Mac user. But, Dot Me, please, sounds pretentiously sophomoric and very unsophisticated for serious folks.
