The Free iPhone Video Recorder – Cycorder

If you have been missing that all-important video recorder functionality for your iPhone, look no further than Cycorder. Now before you get all excited let me first say the only way you will be able to get this app is to have a jailbroken phone along with Cydia.

Jay Freeman, the author of other jailbroken apps such as Cydia and Winterboard, released Cycorder. It does have ads, but I can assure they do not get in your way. Just keep in mind these ads are keeping this app free for all of us.

Cycorder’s video is shockingly decent for a cell phone video recorder. Recording in .mov format, Cycorder gets anywhere from 7-15 frames per second. It did not support audio when it was first released, but it does now. An update has just been released and it finally supports audio, though this clip does not contain any.

To get Cycorder simply go into Cydia and you will see it on the “Featured Packages” list on the front page. Download and enjoy!

i wish they can comeup with better fps, just check out this site they had a amazing video for 60 fps video, they managed to get 6 seconds of it,, recording it was better than nokia n95. i dont know what happend to this project. pls check this site and download a demo to see urself

  2. Nikhil Joshi Says:

http://monsterandfriends.com/iphonevideo .. this is the site..

  3. Jeremy Sikora Says:

    @Nikhil

Check the link out again. There is no mention of 60 fps… That is no way possible on the iPhone. Here is a quote from the link you provided.

“but right now i can capture 2mp quality at 10fps for 10 seconds.. when i lower the quality to normal phone size .mov i should be able to get a higher fps and a minute of video at least.”

This is no where near as good as Cycorder as you are not limited in recording time and Cycorder reaches 15 fps.

  4. Jason Says:

why can’t something like this show up in the app store? The lack of video recording has emerged as my biggest problem with my iPhone, and while I’d love to get this, I am not jailbreaking my phone. Is there a reason why an app like this is NOT in the App Store?

  5. striatic Says:

jason – the official iPhone SDK offers very limited access to the camera.

essentially, when you use the camera in any official iPhone app, it launches a default camera application. this application just takes a picture and then offers you the option to retake the photo or hand-off the photo data to the application you were originally using.

  6. burnsaa Says:

And this is why people will still/always be jailbreaking the iPhone. Basically apple opened the iPhone up enough to get people off its back but still have a tight grip on what devs can and cant do. I swear apple is acting more and more like the “big brother” charactor in their 1984 commercial every second.

I love my iPhone but I hate apple ;)

  7. Apple are CUNTS Says:

Apple need to sort this out. EVERYONE wants a video recorder, and yet the only way they can get it is by jailbreaking their iPhone.

Apple don’t want people to jailbreak, so it doesn’t take a genius to work out that they should offer a video recorder app through the app store. There’s two or three available right now, so pick one APPLE.

  8. macJunky Says:

I totally a agree, apple needs to allow an app to be released or even release it themvselves! I’ve been waiting long eneough!!

  12. allan Says:

how can I download cycorder from this website and then install it on my iphone since I am unable to download it from this site.

  13. Wesley Says:

Using WinSCP or any other SCP program, go to /private/var/mobile/Media/Videos, the files must be there.

I guess there is no other way to get them.

  14. Tony Says:

does anyone know how to move a cycorder video from the iphone to my macbook? I’d like to to be able to upload it to youtube.

  15. Lorne Says:

How to upload a video recorded with Cycorder on a jailbroken iPhone to your Mac using Netatalk:

This guide is a modified version of that provided at: http://www.simonblog.com/2008/09/07/netatalk-lets-you-transfer-files-between-iphone-and-your-mac-wirelessly/

Install Netatalk on your jailbroken iPhone (or use Open SSH or similar – I will not be outlining this method though). Netatalk can be downloaded using Cydia directly onto your iPhone.

    For Mac OS 10.5
Once you’ve got Netatalk installed on your iPhone. Ensure the Wifi is turned on (for both your computer and iPhone).

Then you’ll find your iPhone has shown up on Finder window as shared device (as long as they are connected to the same wireless network). If you don’t have wireless internet, or if you are connecting both your iPhone and computer to a large work or school network you can set up your own ad-hoc network instead using “Create Network” on your airport preferences. Then connect your iPod to this new custom network.

If the iPhone has not shown up as a shared device, you may need to restart it if you have just installed Netatalk.

Next, click “Connect As” button (on your mac, selecting the shared device) to logon as another user. You’ll be prompted to enter name/password.

Type “root” or “mobile” for name and “alpine” for password. Then click “Connect”.

Now your iPhone is connected with your Mac. You should see a “mobile” folder and you can drag & drop files into the iPhone, or copy them off the iPhone, like we want to do.

To access videos recorded with Cycorder, go to: root/var/mobile/Media/Videos

And there you have it. I hope that this helps.

I can’t help but feel that apple realase products like the iPhone underspec on prupose, having the simple things like mms and a video camara missing seems like great excuse to sell a shedload with more with another problem adressed, the firmware updates are **** with the only real big additions being the appstore & the genius playlist which are just 2 things designed to boost apples revenue,I’m on my second iPhone now & tempted just to jailbreak this one too,as apple doesn’t give the full control needed (like camara control & allowing apps to run in the backgound which an IM client would need) apple just seems to gradually get more sneaky, and my itrip doesn’t work with my new iPhone,or my old video cable,ok rant over! :|

  17. romeoalfayankee Says:

hello, is there a possibility to get the video s from the iphone to a pc, i use cycorder, many thanks for your reply romeoalfayankee

  18. Enrico Says:

On Mac to get the videos you can just use PhoneView and browse to Disk/Videos/. Very fast and simple! On win it’s a little harder, I’m looking for a solution myself for my gf who has a vista PC.

  19. glen Says:

In mobile Finder vids are stored at ~/media/videos. I copy ‘em from there to the airshare folder and then you’re good to go with Final Cut or whatever editing you use. Now if someone could tell me how to record with compression that would greatly reduce the file size, cuz these Cycorder-made .mov files are huge compared to mp4’s of the same length…

  28. TTKA1347 Says:

For PC users who have a wireless network and Jailbroken Iphone 3g:

Download Winscp (free) and install on your computer. Install OpenSSH on your Iphone 3G from Cydia’s featured page. While connected to your wireless network on your Iphone navigate to settings/wi-fi/> and find your phones ip address. Write this down. open WinSCP on your computer and type in your ip address under “host name”. Username is “root” and password is “alpine”. And change file protocol to “SCP” and hit login. You may want to disable “autolock” on your iphone because it seems to disconnect from winscp when the phone locks. From there navigate to /private/var/mobile/Media/Videos for your videos. If you right click on a file and hit copy it should try to create a folder on your pc and copy the video file to this folder.

  33. TTKA1347 Says:

Since I do not have a wireless network at work I did a little research for wired connections and found the following:

    http://code.google.com/p/iphonebrowser/

All you have to do is download and install the executable (found in the featured download block on the upper right side). Once you have installed this program simply connect your Jailbroken Iphone to your PC via the USB cable and then start the program. It should automatically detect and connect to your Iphone. I tried this on two windows xp computers with my Jailbroken Iphone 3g and it worked fine.

For Windows users: visit http://code.google.com/p/iphonebrowser/ and run SetupiPhoneBrowser.1.81.exe

When install has finished, open iphonebrowser (iphone connected with usb) and browse towards private/var/mobile/media/videos

    That’s all folks!

  36. Neil Says:

    Hans/TTKA1347,

Thanks for your tips. I was able to download my videos from the iPhone to my XP. I noticed a strange behaviour. After recording a few videos, I am not able to record anymore. I even deleted ALL the existing videos and there is 7GB of space available. Any ideas why this would happen?

  37. TTKA1347 Says:

Neil, As of right now I don’t have any ideas on what might have went wrong. You could try simply reinstalling cycorder. In case you do not know how, open Cydia, then open the manage tab at the bottom, then select packages and scroll until you find cycorder. select it and then select “modify” and you should be able to reinstall it. If I think of anything else I will post it.

  38. B.Dekker Says:

Updated to 2.2.1 all according to DEV-team, keeping it sim-unlocked. When I did so from 2.1 to 2.2 all files of Cycorder remained in my iPhone. Now the files seemed to have disappeared. Looked with SSH but no files. Can anyone confirm that this update (2.2.1) removes Cycorder files completely?

  39. Pankaj Arora Says:

It worked like charm. I also have another iphone but it shows No SERVICE anyone has any idea why. BTW I have done all kinda of fancy things like downgrading it to 1.1.4 and neutralizing the boot neuter, airplane mode on and off..Wondering if its a hardware failure, please help. 41. Alan@Free iPods Says:

Why oh why doesn’t Apple release a decent video recorder for the iPhone, then people wouldn’t have to jailbreak theirs? It’s no good Apple complaining about the jailbreakers among us if they are not going to give the consumers what they want!

PS Nice blog mate. I’ll certainly be back.

  42. william Says:

  46. thomas acito Says:

  47. akmar Says:

  48. funy Says:

just installed the iphone browser app and works like a charm. Cycorder author should try and do what xgps does or some of the other apps where it hosts a webpage you can download them from wirelessly without having to navigate all the folders. Works well though :)

  49. Mars Says:

I have a ? Is there a way to get cycorder without jailbreaking my Iphone, and if not what can go wrong with my Iphone if I do Jailbreak my phone?? let me know Thanks

  50. TTKA1347 Says:

Mars, The answer is no, you have to jailbreak your phone to get this app. I think it fairly harmless to jailbreak your phone if done correctly. You can always restore your phone back to Apple firmware. The main risk to jailbreaking is it voids your year warrenty. As I understand it if something breaks but you are able to do a Apple restore via itunes then you will be ok. but if you cannot restore to apple firmware then they will not honor your warrenty. Plus once jailbroken you cannot update your phone via iTunes anymore. You must use an pwn’d updater. Once you jailbreak you will never want to go back to apple firmware, it simply opens up way to many things that SHOULD already be available.

After I transfer Cycorder videos to my PC, I am unable to change the name of the file. A message pops up saying the file is in use by another person or application but that’s not the case. I sent one of the files to another PC and changed the name. But once I sent it back to my PC, again, I was unable to modify the file name. Can someone please help? Thanks.

  74. amber Says:

    hi,

the answer to transfer cycorder videos to a PC has been repeated, but can someone tell me how I can do this on a MAC?

  75. TTKA1347 Says:

Amber, Install openssh from cydia’s feature page. If you are on a wireless network install “ifile” from cydia’s featured page. This app will allow you to create a local webserver from which you can access all of the iphones root folders. If you are not on a wireless network try the free programs Fugu, ipoddisk or cyberduck.

  76. TTKA1347 Says:

Ifile recently became shareware and therefore costs a few dollars. I can’t remember the exact amount.

  77. Veeno Says:

I recently upgraded my jailbroken iphone to OS 3.0 but stupidly forgot to save my more recent videos taken by Cycorder. Tried to retrieve them through the iPhoneBrowser but i keep on getting the ff error message:Unhandled exception has occured etc …Unable to find an entry point etc.

Is there any other way to retrieve them? do you think the videos are still in my phone and does the iphoneBrowser work on iphones that are not jailbroken? it used to work fine when i was running on OS 2.something, and jailbroken phone. =(

  78. TTKA1347 Says:

Veeno, I am sorry to say that if you upgraded then all of your videos and anything related to your old jailbreak will be gone. The upgrade process replaces all files on the partition. Hence, once you upgrade or restore to official firmware all traces of the jailbreak will be gone and your warranty will still be good. And Iphone browser will not work with a non-jailbroken phone as apple does not want you to have access to the root folders.

  79. jose Says:
