NO EMOTICONS FOR JAPAN?
November 21st, 2008 at 1:36 am
Downloaded & installed in about 20 mins. Took a while to find some of the new features, but liking what I see so far.
Not sure about how to find the expected emoji? Maybe they’re not included?
November 21st, 2008 at 1:41 am
The Gps is great for us in Japan. Tested and is far better than most paid applications on typical Japanese phones.
Emoji i know sounds weird in west but is like slang in japan. They dont type words sometimes just emoji to express on the go themselves. Wish someone findsout if they included them . Apple did not sell really well here just because of the Emoji. So imagine

November 21st, 2008 at 1:56 am
Where do you see streetview?? Where in google?
November 21st, 2008 at 2:01 am
For street view simply place a pin where you’d like to see. Then tap on it and to the left press the icon that appears.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:07 am

Google streetview is abosolutely mind boggling.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:41 am
Google street view is awesome. But now apple (i hope your reading this) GIVE US COPY AND PASTE AND PUSH DANG IT.

November 21st, 2008 at 3:47 am
Very slow connection from Singapore, even though I’m on a T1 line.
Millions of connections to the download site now, I supposed?
November 21st, 2008 at 3:52 am
@Russ didn’t you mean in landscape?
dull update, nothing really exciting….
November 21st, 2008 at 4:00 am
Hi there!
Anyone tried to jailbreak the new firmware?
Greetings,
Rafael
November 21st, 2008 at 4:07 am
iphone was bricked trying to update to 2.2 just a warning. might not be worth it to some, myself included.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:22 am
does anyone have a fix for Iphones that have been slashed with H20? Are they really unrepairable?
November 21st, 2008 at 4:50 am
Downloaded update in eight minutes, so that was snappy, but iTunes has been backing up my iPhone for over an hour now. Judging from the progress bar, I’m guessing it’ll take at least another ten minutes or so. No landscape email yet?
November 21st, 2008 at 4:54 am
There’s a slight change in Network Selection: it doesn’t show you anymore if it’s 2G or 3G. Uhm….
November 21st, 2008 at 5:58 am
Where is the link to download?
November 21st, 2008 at 6:18 am
The download of the software was super fast. Updating iPhone now…did i hear someone say you can text in landscape now?
November 21st, 2008 at 6:19 am
@ Svetoslav Connect to iTunes and plug in your iphone. At main screen for iphone select “Check for Update”
November 21st, 2008 at 6:44 am
I will say google streetview is awesome. However most of these updates don’t impress me. sigh guess I’ll wait another six months for what I want. I have a feeling there us some coincidence between the release of the iTunes/iPhone update and the release of the Storm by that other company.
November 21st, 2008 at 7:22 am
@neta2:
I know someone who dropped it in a lake. He let it dry completely and everything worked except for the Home button, so he opened it up and carefully cleaned the leads, then closed it again, and now it’s fine.
If you know or can find someone really good at electronics, that might be your best bet.
November 21st, 2008 at 7:24 am
Definitely jailbroken here… I’ll be waiting on the firmware update that actually adds more features that are useful to me.
November 21st, 2008 at 7:27 am
Thanks to Jeremy for spotting the update so quickly (I picture him sitting there hitting “check for updates” 36 times a second while simultaneously playing Gear of War 2 — and winning. And Dieter, for getting the update list updated so quickly. If I didn’t know better, I’d assume both are Cylons…
November 21st, 2008 at 7:42 am
I jailbroke only to disable auto-correction and since my iphone is legally unlocked, I’m jumping to the update right now
November 21st, 2008 at 7:57 am
Anyone else not able to delete individual mail messages? I have two accounts, and neither will let me delete. I get a pop-up saying mail can’t be moved to the trash.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:16 am
Emoji is nice and plentiful, and Google Maps is fricking awesome!
Street View is solid, but the directions is where it really shines. Has train and bus schedules here in Japan, which is pretty cool (although Hyperdia is better).
It would be better though if you could select from a list of choices for the driving directions, to avoid toll highways for example.
For some reason though I can’t get the walk directions to work, but it’s no biggie.
And George, deleting emails works fine for me.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:24 am
Can anyone confirm e-mail Fetch issues now resolved?
November 21st, 2008 at 8:51 am
so if I’m jailbroken and want to update to 2.2 how would I go about doing that without junking my phone?
November 21st, 2008 at 9:09 am
How do we acess the ability to use emoji icons?!?!?!?!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:09 am
I’m also afraid to update… my phone is jailbroken, but I don’t really need the jailbroken apps. Can I update worry-free?
November 21st, 2008 at 9:13 am
Is anyone else getting a “cannot connect to iTunes” error when looking for updates in the app store?
November 21st, 2008 at 9:18 am
Here is the fix for the issue of not being able to delete emails:
Go into SETTINGS and enter MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS. Click on email account(s) and scroll down to ADVANCED SETTINGS.
Go into DELETED MAILBOX. If your account is anything like mine, “Trash” under ON MY IPHONE is already checked. Click it again and return to MAIL.
Emails should delete fine now.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:49 am
Where to turn on and use emoji?!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:55 am
One of the two real useful features for me in 2.2 would have been the ability to download podcasts directly to the iPhone. But no, Apple wouldn’t allow that for souls in much of Central Europe and several other spots in the world where. The reason: in these places, the non-App store part of the iTunes Store is not available yet. Odd, isn’t it, that I can get any podcast via the Mac iTunes but not on my iPhone.
But I am happy the other new works: now I can turn off predictive text entry for messages in languages other than English.

I successfully updated a deactivated AT&T iPhone 2G from 2.1 to 2.2 using “Update” button from iTunes 8.0.1 I just kept my 2G iPhone (to use as an iPod Touch+) when I upgraded to the 3G. It still has the original AT&T SIM card in there (it’s just deactivated and I keep the phone in Airplane mode with WiFi on since I don’t use it as a phone). It’s never been Pwned or jailbroken or unlocked. I wasn’t sure what would happen on the upgrade, but it went ok. It popped up an activation message saying activation would take some time, but I dismissed it and it let me use my device. (I also updated my wife’s 2G iPhone and my iPhone 3G as well, but neither one is jailbroken or unlocked.)
I like the improved handling of wide HTML messages in Mail. Messages that previously were only legible by zooming in and scrolling each line left to right now properly wrap the text.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:09 am
Still no easy way to switch between email accounts. This is my #1 beef with this piece of ****. I miss Windows mobile… kinda. I hope they fix this or I may have to go back. Am I the only one with more than one email account? Should be able to switch between work, home, text and any other account with one button. Screw the stupid nav stuff.
My wife did her update and had to revert back to factory settings and re set up her iPhone. She said it had fully completed when she disconnected but I wasn’t there to see it. Thought I’d mention it all the same.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:15 am
Can we use the emoji in Canada? I like the idea of it, but I have no idea how to set it up. Also, can it only be used in email, or is it text and email?
November 21st, 2008 at 10:15 am
im still wanting to know how i should go about updating my iphone even though its jailbroken..how can i do this without junking my phone???
November 21st, 2008 at 10:21 am
Google programers are pushing the iPhone limits, while apple just sits on it’s @ss.
•Public transit info missing in Boston? •It works fine in New York City. •What’ the freaking hold up on Push!!! How many months has it been, Feb 08 then on Sept 08, somebody needs to be fired!!!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:40 am
There are few goodies in this upgrade that are great (i.e. the street view). But for me the most useful appears to be the automatic formatting of web pages when switching from portrait to landscape and back. Previously I had to double-tap to zoom in in portrait (or landscape) and then after switching to landscape (portrait) double-tap again to adjust the width. Now it’s done automatically. Also, no scrolling/tapping from the Home screen #9 to #1 back - just hit the Home button and you are at Home
November 21st, 2008 at 10:55 am
I believe I’ve found one more feature hidden in this update that, at least to me, is very useful. If I remember correctly, before 2.2, we were only able to delete video podcasts directly from the iPhone and all other podcasts had to be deleted from iTunes. After this update, I can now delete any podcasts (audio and video) right on the phone! This is exciting to me since I listen to lots of podcasts and can now download them, hear them, delete them and add others without running out of space on my 8GB.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:23 am
I know it already flashed on the Net but one more nice thing is the revamped Categories page in the App Store. Now you can see icons instead of just text list and in each category items are sorted by Top Paid, Top Free and Release Date.

The iPhone is on sale at mobiles.co.uk now! Take a look

Pretty astute business plan by Apple. Software updates couple times a year with one great change and several mediocre ones and we’re all in love with our phones again. Cut n Paste, video, MMS, all the other stuff will come, mark my words, but will be timed to coincide with a heavy hitter like the iPhone 4G or 32GB or whatever. Maybe once more iClones come out.
It’s all good…
November 21st, 2008 at 11:50 am
@Carter: Yes, if you dont care about losing jailbreak features, the update works like a charm. Thats what I did just now and the bug fixes are more than worth it.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:57 am
@john:
I have 2 email accounts on mine & I like this setup the best. The Nokia E62 had different programs for my .mac & exchange email. My 8525 with Windows Mobile 6 had the setup you desire, but personally I like my email seperate ala the iPhone. This way I know that I’m responding to a personal or work email and that it goes from the right account.
November 21st, 2008 at 11:57 am
There’s nothing here I’ll ever use (maybe walking directions next summer), but at least there are some bugs fixed (supposedly).
I’m very happy and grateful for the iPhone just the way it is.
November 21st, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Looks like no emoji for us…according to the apple website:
Not all customers can create and view Emoji. Emoji can only be sent from an iPhone running OS 2.2 with a SoftBank email account and a SoftBank SIM. Viewing Emoji on an iPhone requires iPhone OS 2.2 or later and a SoftBank SIM. Emoji cannot be sent from an iPhone running OS 2.1 or earlier.

I’m not seeing texting in landscape mode… am I missing something?
November 21st, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Still no ability to set custom alert tones for different email accounts. Heck! you can’t set a custome email alert tone period! You are stuck with only being able to turn the alert on or off. Sigh…perhaps this feature will eventually show up before my phone becomes obsolete.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:23 pm
What c**p. Cant use emoji, neva use google maps, podcasts boring, who cares about safari, rubbish app updates. Bring a decent update for once that will make a diff. Copy n paste, mms, video cam, such a long wait for such rubbish.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:48 pm
begging that this makes safari more stable. The thing crashes non stop
November 21st, 2008 at 3:29 pm
I owne a jailbroken iphone 3g and love my mms and video recording aaps too much. to update to 2.2 i dont find it worth it… maybe next time or a workaround works with my jailbroken phone.
November 21st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
One welcome fix with 2.2 is the email fetch mechanism. With 2.1 email client wouldn’t fetch email from the server if the phone was in the sleep state. Now it works properly.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Hello Folks,
I completed my iPhone 3G update to firmware v2.2 a couple of hours ago and so far so good. I have noticed all the features mentioned above by other users. The main thing that I am loving is the speed of the OS and interface since the update, for Ex. when I would attempt to launch the SMS app it would open but take about 10-15 seconds to show the list of SMSs (I guess I am a heavy texter and I do save just about every message and conversation). Since the update there has been a noticeable improvement in the SMS app loading (it takes about 2 or 3 seconds). I was used to the delay in the app opening coming from a WinMo device. I also notices that when the phone it locked and a SMS comes in it shows who the message is from next to New test message (the message details are still hidden). Before it would just show new text message. I have not seen the elusive landscape keyboard in the SMS or Email app so far.
Ok that is my 2 cents for now.
FlapiPhone.

I haven’t updated yet, but has anyone deleted an app to see if it will ask for a rating when trying to delete??
November 21st, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Danny R
yes it asks for a rating. good update…. gmail sputtered once sending mail, had to retype my password) but otherwise a good update.
November 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 am
I upgraded my jailbroken/unlocked Iphone 1st Gen this morning to 2.2. No problem. Still on Tmobile and can see all the upgrades.
November 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
isolated issues with schedule fetching of email ? isolated my sorry ***
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:17 pm
This was the smoothest update so far for me. I’m a bit disappointed to find out emojis are only available in Japan
Glad to see safari is more stable and loving street view (although it’s not yet available in UK) and whole phone seems slicker. My top feature - hitting the home button to go straight back to first screen.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING- How do u turn on emoticons?
December 1st, 2008 at 12:15 am
hey everyone I am currently jailbroken on 1.1.1 and desperatly want to upgrade my firmware but I dont want to loose all my applications that took countless hours to figure out … Any advice
Please ive tried almost everythig!!
December 3rd, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Helllo..
To start .. thank you George for answering your own question.. I had the same deleting mail issue and your suggestion worked .. as of now… lol .. this is the 4/5 fone i unlocked myself and im a part-time hustler/techie .. legal unlock.. do you smoke.. I got you .. Hit me up!!
Dan .. if you back up when you restore.. you should be ok.. BUT.. if your tryin to go from 1.1.1 all the way to 2.2 .. sry.. not all those apps will work.. i was using 1.1.4 and lost the majority.. but have my 5thousand contacts……..phew.. did not want to retype those puppies.. P.S. I used Quickpwn after restore and update.. not the newest newest which is itunes 8.0.3 i believe
Sry if I didnt help.. I did say Part-Time.. Non -Union
3 minus 2
December 31st, 2008 at 11:28 am
Didn’t like it at all. It is very slow compared to 1.1.4. After a long wait and hearing a lot from you people I had updated to 2.2 and could not find anything useful in it. I had lost my great jailbroken apps like agilemessenger (palringo is not that good). 2.2 touch response was very slow, worst thing , sometimes just normal touch to launch an phone app or mail app will start screen icon rearranging. That was annoying. I tried to restore and quickpwned two times but no luck on these issues. All the appstore apps I found are kid apps n nothing useful. New intelliscreen was nice but. 2.2 Safari crashed often than on 1.1.4.
Let me know your overall feedback about 2.2
