Round Robin: WinMo Expert Dieter vs. the iPhone 3G Video!
[This is an official Smartphone Experts Round Robin post! Every day you reply here, you're automatically entered for a chance to win an iPhone 3G, Case-Mate Naked Case, and Motorola H9 Bluetooth Headset! Full contest rules here!]
The Smartphone Experts Round Robin‘ is slamming into round 2! While I’ve been having fun with the Palm Treo Pro, uber-gadgeteer Dieter has been restoring his child-like sense of wonder with Apple’s iPhone 3G.
Says Dieter, horned WMExperts hat firmly in place:
The real story between Windows Mobile and the iPhone platform is this: the iPhone has elegance while Windows Mobile has power, versatility, and openness. It’s that last one that’s clearly becoming a bigger factor in my mind as time goes on (as it is with the entire the entire WMExperts Team). Podcast downloading is the touchstone example of the moment, but there are plenty of others. I’ll get into it quite a bit more in the final review, but for now, sit back and watch my video first take.
Is he right? And if he is, do we want to live in a world so wrong? Go on over and tell him what you think!
Remember, each SPE site is giving away their signature smartphone and accessories, so it’s not just an iPhone 3G up for grabs! Every day you comment on Dieter’s video, or my thread in the TreoCentral Forum, you get two more chances to win a smartphone (and accessories!)

I’m going to comment, but I’m not sure if I want to win the 3G as I hear waiting for the phone to pull up feature rich (not wap versions) is a real pain. Thanks for the good content and comparisons.

while I respect Dieter’s opinion I have to disagree with his speed comments and the iPhone being a stop and go phone. It’s all relative to the user so maybe in his particular case that is true. For me I find the exact opposite. WM is by far the slowest of OS’s out there. Again, for me personally. And yes I have even owned the latest and greatest WM has to offer. (HTC Fuze).

Weirdows sucks. I wouldn’t use it for $0.00 per month.

Very good assessment! To me he pointed out everything that needed to be. From the video i came to the conclusion that iphone is still the most powerful mobile platform on the market. Keep up the good work TIPB!

Great video! GO iPhone! It is definitely the best OS on the mobile market, and this video just backs up that theory.
iPhone rules.

I am new in the Iphone World, but I began to like the phone. Ok, there IS a battery problem, but I had WinMo phones and had even more problems with the StandBy-Time.
iPhone with Standby-Time of a Blackberry would be great!

It was a good review but the iphone isn’t a stop and go phone. Granted you have to look at the keyboard to type, but just barely as it starts to become instinctual after a the first few days.

I thought this was a very well done fair review of the iPhone from a windows mobile user pov. I don’t agree that this is a stop and go phone one bit, and would say the deffiniton of a stop and go phone is the palm treo. Other then this was a great vid and I think deep down he secretly loves our phone.

It’s so beautiful

Very nicely done review. I didn’t actually research into the other devices as much as I had liked to before purchasing my iPhone 3G but from my experiences and the reviews we’ve been seeing from the other smartphone experts who have gotten a chance to use the other platforms, I’m quite happy with my purchase.

the ideal would be blackberry and apple merger phone os.

The iPhone is only a stop and go phone when it’s new to the user. It takes a while to get the hang of the keyboard and even longer to trust the auto correct. I can type pretty fast while walking now. I’ve found that you really only need to get CLOSE to the keys you want to type, for the most part. For example, I know where the ‘L’ is so I hit the right side of the screen somewhere in it’s general direction and the phone gets it based on what I’m typing. You learn what words it doesn’t correct for you (I can’t count the number of times I’ve types ‘fir’ instead of ‘for’). If anything, it makes it frustrating to go back to a real keyboard. My friends tell me that my texts are so grammatically correct now. Punctuation, capitolization, spell checker, it’s just easier to type the actual word rather than the shortened SMS version. I really wish the iPhone had a charecter counter in the SMS app though so I can stop sending a text that sends 1 or 2 words in a seperate message.

Nicely done video. He picked up on all the strengths and saw the weaknesses that we all know about.
Although he commented on how long it takes to search for a contact, there is a shortcut he missed. To get to the contact search at the top, you can just tap the clock or status bar above and it will skip you to the top. This applies to many apps, including safari. On another note for jailbreaking, there is an app that can search for contacts and also apps right from the home screen. It’s called QuickGold and it id much faster, but I’m guessing he’s gotta stay stock for the review.
Well thanks for the review and I’ll be waiting for the full one.

November 27th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Nice video…iphone is still the best!
November 27th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Pure and simple. The iPhone is not perfect, but it is the only smart phone that I can call absolutely fun. I cant say that for any other smart phone.
November 28th, 2008 at 2:55 am
If I’m looking for a good time(which I am) I would go for the iphone but if I had really business needs i would have to probably say winmobile
November 28th, 2008 at 10:34 am
I agree with Firas and Amani. The iPhone isn’t perfect, but it is fun, more than the BB Curve I have now.
November 28th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Window’s mobile is nice. My friend has it on his Fuze. Pretty neat
November 28th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
