The iPhone/iPod Touch ecology will dominate like dinosaurs and deciduous plants did over amphibians and ferns. We just got two Nintendo DS’s and had a chance to compare to the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 1G, and it’s a tie only because Nintendo has been at it longer and has longer, deeper games. It’s only a matter a time -see my article here:

these apps are mostly stupid games for morons or they are memory hogs slowing down the touch speed.

I already had an iPhone 3G, but I did get a couple of iTunes gift cards, which I spent entirely on iPhone Apps (Rolando, SimCity, and Tweetie, among others). I suspect a lot of other iPhone and iPod Touch owners who recieved gift cards did the same, and that contributed to the spike as well.
