TiPb Readers’ Choice Awards: Announcing YOUR Best (and Worst!) of Everything iPhone!

Forget the Oscars, we’ve got the Steves! Okay, so we’re not really calling them the Steves — they’re the TiPb Readers’ Choice Awards, and while they won’t let you watch Wolverine sing and dance, they won’t consume 4+ hours of your life either. And hey, who needs best picture when we have best fart app? (No, don’t worry, that’s not an actual category — this year!)

Right after New Year, and the TiPb Editors’ Choice Awards, we began something far more important — YOUR choices. We opened the forums up to nomination, and when we had our nominees, we let you have at the voting. And vote you did, rocketing your favorites to the very tops of the charts.

Well now the votes have been counted, the results are in, and TiPb is honored to present our Readers’ Choice Awards…

Apps for Less: Hell’s Kitchen, Flick Fishing, iDracula

Today on Apps for Less we have 3 very well polished games to recently hit the app store.

First up, if you are a Chef Ramsay fan you will not want to pass this one up. For a limited time you can cook up Hell’s Kitchen for $2.99. That’s 50% off the regular price!

“The Hell’s Kitchen game is perfectly suited to take advantage of the power of these devices. Rich graphics featuring Gordon Ramsay in 3D, realistic sound effects, and easy touch screen game play to quickly move players from dining room to kitchen all combine to create one of the most dynamic iPhone and iPod touch games available.”

Next up is a good one for all of you fishing fans out there. Maybe you saw this app in the latest iPod Touch commercial Rene posted about a few short days ago. Flick Fishing is now on sale for only $.99! Get this before it goes back up to it’s regular price of $2.99.

“With 6 fishing locations, 9 types of bait and tackle, 12 tournaments and dozens of unique species of fish, Flick Fishing is an unrivaled fishing simulation, and just plain fun!”

Last up we have iDracula, again this is a limited $.99 sale offer! It will be back up to it’s $2.99 price in a short time so don’t delay!

“Can you stand the night? iDracula is an intense survival shooter – the most intense game in the App Store. You begin with a simple gun and slow monsters, but as the time passes, they grow stronger and faster, dropping better weapons. You will also be able to gain “perks”, as you earn enough experience.”

So there you have it, a quick wrap up of three of the hottest new games to hit the App Store! Grab these deals before they disappear!

Are You Still Using Your iPhone Apps?

Pinch Media, who provide metrics/analytics for iPhone users recently gave a presentation on “AppStore Secrets” that highlighted what they’re seeing in terms of free vs. ad supported vs. paid, and usage patterns over time. They try to provide developers with some useful number crunching on how and when to determine if their application is “sticky” and modulate price and ad support, but they also show some things that are interesting from the user perspective:

  1. We don’t use free apps that much. Sure, we download them by the gigabyte-full, but after a few tries, it’s buh-bye. If we pay for it, we probably need/want it more, and hence use it more.
  2. We keep using games longer than any other type of app.

Things rings true for me. Of all the apps I’ve downloaded (and they’ve been many, free and paid), about the only ones I use consistently are casual games and communication clients (IM, Twitter, etc.) The rest of the time, I’m using built-in apps like Safari, Email, iPod, etc. And even among those “sticky” apps, when I’ve had my fill of one game, I move on to another. When a new Twitter or IM client comes out, I switch to it (and sometimes switch back and forth).

What about you? Do you stop using free apps faster than paid? And what apps do you keep using?

(Thanks to everyone who sent this in!)

Rogers 4G LTE “Will They/Won’t They” Saga Continues!

Sarumon Consults the Eye of Rogers on Canadian iPhone 3G Data Rates

So yesterday we linked to Zach Epstein’s story over at BGR, the one about an internal Rogers briefing call that claimed Vancouver would be enjoying some 4G LTE at 50Mbps+ just in time for the Winter Olympics.

Rogers contacted us almost immediately to say the story was inaccurate and the call never happened, and we contacted Zach who was gracious enough to get back to us, reaffirming the story. Now the BGR has kicked it up another notch, posting audio from the supposed call online.

Real? Fake? A “leak it so we sound innovative but deny it so if it doesn’t launch we had coverage” tactic? Take a listen to the recording and tell us what you think…

Quick App: South Park Mobile for iPhone Jailbreak

You really have to love Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park:

“We’re always in favor of people downloading. It’s how a lot of people see the show. And it’s never hurt us. We’ve done nothing but be successful with the show. How could you ever get mad about somebody who wants to see your stuff?”

Well Apple drops the ball yet again with the official South Park app in the App store… and yet again a 3rd party picks up the slack. South Park Mobile is available via Cydia and if you are not jailbroken, check out www.southparkmobile.net on your iPhone. What this app allows you to do is stream full episodes of South Park for your viewing pleasure right on your iPhone. Every single episode, from every single season is available for you to stream. Keep in mind this is not something official from Mr. Stone and Mr. Parker but it’s the best we currently have available to us.

*You must be on firmware 2.2+ in order for this Jailbreak App to work.

[Thanks to Jaun for the tip!]

Apple Wolfing Down Flash RAM Chips in Advanced of Next Gen iPhone?

Apple Buys Palo Alto Semiconductor (PA Semi)

Apple is perhaps the most gluttonous consumer of flash RAM chips on the planet, what with most iPod’s flash memory based and still selling in the multiple tens of millions and — oh yeah — the iPhone and iPod touch. 14 million iPhone 3Gs were sold last year alone and this year? According to Apple Insider, they’s waddled the chair up and parked it right at the buffet:

The iPhone maker has bought out Samsung’s entire available supply, putting the world’s largest producer of flash memory on allocation until April 2009, according to the report. Samsung makes just over 40% of the world’s NAND Flash RAM.

There was no indication, however, whether or not Apple has switched to the double-capacity chips they’ll need to take the iPhone to 32GB. Due to the communications radios, previous iPhones have only 1 RAM slot as opposed the 2 in the iPod touch.

But we kind of want 32GB in our iPhones, right?

Quick App: Apples2Oranges

Do you ever do any price comparison in the grocery store? Gallons vs. liters? Ounces vs. milligrams? Fifty feet of Scotch tape vs. 15 meters? What’s the best deal? Apples2Oranges is a $2.99 app from Ilium Software and can be downloaded to your iPhone from the App Store. It employs a simple touch interface where you can compare two kinds of modes: Ingredients Mode and Price Mode. Ingredients Mode lets you compare nutritional content for food you are eating or buying. Price Mode lets you compare two products side-by-side for the best price considering different measurements for volume, length, or area.

Just enter the numerical amount of the item on the left side of the “size” window, then select the type of measurement you are comparing in the right side of the “size” window, then press “compare” for the “price.” Or, if in Ingredient Mode, you can compare different measurements and even calories. This can be a very handy app if you are trying to save money at the store or trying to watch your calorie intake. Take a look in the App Store and get it if you like what you see.

How’s Your Battery Life With iPhone OS 2.2.1?

There were complaints about battery life with iPhone OS 2.1, but many on the various internet channels seemed to think OS 2.2 fixed that up rather nicely. Reports since iPhone OS 2.2.1 have varied more widely. Some seem to think it’s fine while others, including well know tech pundit Leo Laporte, keep saying they’re getting worse battery life since the last update.

What’s happening with your iPhone? The same? Better? Worse? Can you make it through a day? And what’s with the up and down between firmware? Is Apple playing some high-stakes balancing game between battery life and signal reception?
