CEOh-Snap Daily Double! Palm’s McNamee Hurts iPhone but Hearts Mac

No sooner did we report the outlandish statement from Palm backer Elevation Partners head-geek Roger McNamee that come June, every iPhone 2G owner would ditch the platform and AT&T to become Pre-verts on Sprint, than our sibling site PreCentral.net went and updated.

Seems McNamee thinks iPhone Mobile Safari ain’t all that, compared to the Pre (even though the Pre uses Apple’s open-source WebKit foundation — which we know comes from KHTML/Konquerer…):

“Our product is just going to run rings around them on the web. If you want to go the web, it’s going to be a million time faster, well, not a million times, several times faster and that’s a huge deal for most people.”

Really? And since Sprint can’t do simultaneous voice and data, the minute you answer a call, your speed drops to zero. How much faster is that?

Apparently, however, McNamee’s hurt turns to heart for Apple’s Mac platform:

I’ve been an apple fan for years and I would never use any other kind of computer!

Bulletin: Some may just feel the same about the iPhone, b’okay Roger? See the whole crash-and-burn on video at Bloomberg

Please tell me this guy doesn’t get paid!?!

  2. cardfan Says:

The Pre’s browser is superior and should be on something called a webOS along with a faster network in Sprint.

  3. Steve Says:

The Pre won’t have an Apple logo on the back, so it’ll just suck. Period.

I love this time of year its iphone killing season.. I get bored of this I have a cooler phone talk.

  5. j Says:

for me, its not about that its made by apple or that its the “newest thing” its because its on AT&T and im not going to switch carriers just for a phone.

especially not some POS CDMA carrer…

  6. Jeffdc5 Says:

I don’t want to switch palm is falling apart don’t want to take the chance. my iphone and nokia n85 sync well with my other mac products i don’t know about the pre. Nobody mentions if the pre is any good as a phone. does it have wifi?

  7. Rene Ritchie Says:

@cardfan: Sprint being “faster” will mean nothing because you can’t do simultaneous voice and data on their EVDO service. Answer a phone call, your web speed is 0.

@Jeffdc5: Yep, I believe the Pre has WiFi built in.

  8. ernest Says:

why switch to PRE. palm will never know what hit them on june once APPLE releases its surprise iphone upgrade on that month. LOL.

  9. Jeffdc5 Says:

the thing i love with my iphone and nokia n85 is that apple and nokia do firmware updates on the regular apple will just drop them out of nowhere and nokia does the same adding new features fixing old ones, I like that I like knowing that the expensive phone in my pocket is still supported by the company I don’t think palm has a record of doing that.

I will be avoiding the Pre. I’ve come to love the software keyboard on the iPhone. Having to open the slide all the time on websites and that, effectively makes the Pre twice the physical size! Also the “webapps on the phone” idea isn’t going to be very powerful, and I LOVE the iPhone AppStore.

by the time Pre will come out iphohe Safari will be superfast as Safari 4! so he may do marketing and talky talk, but let’s see it in action first.

If the Pre continues Palm’s history of working well as a business tool, excellent 3rd party business aps support with the ability to use Palm’s native databases for contacts, mail, etc, and integration with exchange (able to send invites, synch tasks) I’ll switch; especially if they come out with a GSM version I can use on ATT. For me, my phone is a tool; and as much as I love the iPhone screen I really am frustrated at times by the iPhone’s limitations as a business tool. For example, for some reason it doesn’t synch all my calender entries from outlook. It appears to only copy 2 all day events and i often have 3 or 4.

The thing I think no one realizes about the Pre is.. It’s not an iPhone. Period.

cough …and it runs nasty Sprint…
