iPhone Dev Team: Don’t Load iPhone OS 3.0 Beta if You Want to Keep Using YellowSn0w

iPhone 2.0 Jailbreak and Unlock Pirate

Anytime there’s an update — or in this case, even a new beta firmware for developers to test out months ahead of an update — the iPhone Dev Team reminds Jailbreak users, especially those running unlocked using YellowSn0w to stop, breathe, and wait for the “all clear” before updating.

In this case, the Dev Team says:

If you find yourself with access to the 3G IPSW for 3.0 via the iPhone Dev Center program, and you are using yellowsn0w, do not update or restore to that official IPSW. You will lose yellowsn0w and find yourself unable to revert the baseband to get it back.

And for those wondering, yes the 3.0 OS is jailbreakable on all devices. It’s just those using 3G yellowsn0w that have to show some restraint and wait for PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update.

No big surprise they can crack the 3.0 firmware, though Apple might still throw some curves their way in future betas or the final release. We’re guessing the true next step in the cat and mouse game will be iPhone 2,1 hardware, which could prove as tricky, if not trickier, than the iPod touch 2,1 which took quite a while to get to RedSn0w…

(Thanks to everyone that sent this in!)

Is the iPhone Dev Team relevant anymore? When 3.0 launches, they’ll pretty much only exist for pirated apps.

  2. AdMm Says:

umm I love trickin out my iPhone to it’s most pimpest extent.

  3. Wesley Says:

frog, iPhone Dev Team lets us have total control of our devices, piracy is only a side effect of this. Things like 5 row keyboard, WinterBoard (to use themes and change the lame face SpringBoard has), SBSettings and many other important apps are only made possible through the jailbreak process, which is totally different from unlock and piracy.

What is yellowsnow exactly? What it does?

  5. john Says:

I thought devs have only access to thr 3.0 SDK not the actual firmware. If they have access to the firmware then it would be leaked to the public

  6. Rene Ritchie Says:

Devs have the beta firmware but it’s under NDA (and who knows if Apple can trace leaks… ;) )

  7. iAirmanshirk Says:

No doubt The dev team has signed up for the development service and is currently cracking it to remove any code that may trace them as they make multiple copies and crack it for our pleasure :)

  8. antonioj Says:

the firmware was leaked hours ago…

@frog, you don´t know nothing about what you´re talking…i will still jailbreak for:

video recording SBSsettings (swipe finger on top to acess wifi, bt, 3g toggles) Intelliscreen (calendar, rss, weather, etc, all showed on the lockscreen) etc

  9. Steve Says:

Yes, jailbreaking is still useful for ghetto-looking backgrounds, keyboards, themes, and apps.

  10. antonioj Says:

yes, you can use “ghetto-looking” stuff…but only if you like that sort of thing…i prefer more stylish stuff, and there is plenty

oh well, i guess lame jaibreak haters will have a boost on their moral with 3.0 announcement, so must prepare to prove them wrong over and over again

  11. Ana Says:

Never mind the “haters”. I really hope they have this ready from day 1 though….because I really need my “ghetto” apps.

  12. Steve Says:

    @antonioj:

I’m not a jailbreak hater. I just haven’t seen anything that appeals to me. If I ever do, I will certainly not hesitate to jailbreak.

  13. Scott Says:

    @Steve & crew,

Just because it doesn’t appeal to you doesn’t mean you should be rolling your eyes at it. Depends on your level of comfort. Opening up ssh access, installing a text editor plus Ruby/Perl/etc., and some of the dedicated tools like Erica’s cmd line utilities opens up the iPhone to do all sorts of cool lightweight development.

I’m an iPhone registered developer and am totally comfortable writing official ObjC apps (and psyched about the all the new 3.0 APIs). But sometimes for a one-off personal solution it’s just a lot easier to throw together some scripts and call it done.

I ignore the ghetto-looking backgrounds, etc. too. In fact, Cydia is slow, ugly, and I hate it. But I love having full access to my iPhone.

  14. Steve Says:

    Steve & crew!

    I like that.

  15. Steve Says:

    @Scott:

I won’t argue with you about Jailbreaking vs. non-jailbreaking. But I have to disagree with you on one point…

This a place for people to post their opinions. I haven’t criticized you or anyone else for jailbreaking, I criticized the content I’ve seen available with it. To say what anyone “should” or “shouldn’t” do with their eyes is saying that they shouldn’t have their own opinions. I wasn’t aware this was a “jailbreakers only” thread.

My apologies to you and your crew for intruding.

  16. ahMEmon Says:

I love the fact that, with my jailbroken iPhone, I can send MMS messages, record video, change the background of the home screen, have quick acces to controls such as brightness and SSH without needing to exit the app I am currently using AND cut and paste. Features that are common on most other phones but for some reason or the other, weren’t included until now (well, summer but you get the point). All except SSH for obvious reasons.

  17. Michael Says:

iPhone Dev Team is relevant. Thanks to them. I can use my iPhone anywhere in the world with different SIM cards, i am free to use apps which are not allowed by apple or the operators. Go ahead Devteam – be happy to see your next releases

  18. Chris Says:

Anyone with out a developer account try loading the 3.0 FW on their phone?

  19. Steve Says:

iPhone Video Recorder might be a reason why I still might want to jailbreak on 3.0 !!

  20. Lighter Says:

Frog your an idiot. Go back to the Apple store and return your iPhone.. You shouldn’t own one!!!

  21. Lighter Says:

Chris@ I have =) Its buggy but I see it being amazig when the final comes out!!!

  22. Will Says:

    Hi,

I’m a member of ADC and the iPhone Dev Program so I can put it on my phone, however I’m running O2 pay as you go on the first generation iPhone so I have to activate/unlock it. Luckily, I haven’t had to perform any jailbreaks/pwnages/unlocks for a while as the baseband hasn’t been on it.

However, I’d like to know if it can be confirmed whether any future 3.0 betas will have protection against this or whether there will be any baseband updates where I have to wait for a new unlock. I’d like to know so that I can decide whether to apply the new update.

By the way, is it a simple update or would I have to restore to install it?

    Thanks for any replies!

    William

PS. The dev team is still relevant, thanks to them, people don’t have to be on official carriers or pay for expensive contracts. We can also install useful programs such as cycorder, however I dislike repeatedly moddig my iPhone as I lose saved game progress unless I use quickpwn, plus I prefer my home screens to not be cluttered by jailbroken items, so I simply have an unlock/activation which has persisted for many revisions without the need to be update via pwnage
