Quick App: Yowza!! Location-based Shopping Coupons for iPhone
Cali Lewis and GeekBrief.tv interview Greg Grunberg of Heroes, Lost, Alias, and Felicity fame who’s conceptualized Yowza!! A location-aware, iPhone specific coupon app. Participating businesses can use a simple back-end web system to set up discount offers which are then displayed on the iPhone app based on current location and/or deliberate search. iPod touch users get a local storage option, and Grunberg announces a special holiday surprise towards the end of the video as well.
It’s a trifle long, but interesting to hear both how the app came to life, and how the iPhone can be used to save money and, of course, revolutionize the world…

Anyone tried it yet?

Even better app of this type is Coupious

Genius, but I don’t know that I want more apps for just that, I’d rather see it as a web app, I don’t see the huge value in it taking up valuable desktop space (don’t start on the 64+ pages of apps)when a bookmark will do. I mean unless it does like a push notification, but then I’d think it’d have to run in the background which even OS 3.0 won’t do

@Albert: What do you think “push enabled notifications available for iPhone 3.0 software” means?
Did anyone besides Al have anything relevant to post about this application? OMG I LOVE GREG, AND HEROS, AND LOST AND I SHOULD BE AN ACTOR BECAUSE ME AND GREG BOTH PLAY DRUMS.. blah blah. Who cares? Let’s talk about the app.
@Ryshark: I’m sure if you call Greg, tell him that you ALSO play the drums, like a 1/3 of the entire US does, and that you have an iPhone, he’ll get you under contract with NBC right away.

OMG A GUY FROM TV ITS LIKE IM IN THE TV!
In reality, great idea, but I fired it up and it said there was nothing in my area. (I’m in Ann Arbor, MI.) Although it’s also just launched as of yesterday…

They should develop something similar for clothing and shoe stores! like what stores have sales like bcbg, bebe, aldo. I would definitely pay for something like that =)

I stopped the video after a minute and a half when he was introducing all twenty members of his band. I can’t handle waiting for people to get to a point. So, I’ll never know what the app does… nor care. Screw it.

@Al Coupious only works in one area still. How is that better?
I tried every major city in Tennessee for yowza, all I got was finish line coupons. But it’s early yet I guess. Great set up, good concept. I’d like to see this one take off.

Just curious, but how scanable is that barcode they display? My experience is that barcodes on LCD screens are VERY difficult to scan with a good ‘CCD imager’, and impossible with a laser scanner.

I live in Arlington, between Dallas and Fort Worth and there’s not SQAUT.
