In my case, got the same error and the same itunes screen. I just simply unplug my usb cable and plug it again. Now, it works!. My ITunes 8.2 detected my phone and started restoring it. Good thing I backed up my phone before it went troubled.

Thanks a ton LionArch007!! Your solution worked for me too. I too had this 1604 error and although I knew there was some key combination to use I tried only the "Command" and "Ctrl" keys while clicking Restore.

I do have one more issue - my iPhone camera is not working - the shutter graphics shows but does not open up.

I had the same problem. I had the PSoD with a 1604 error. Don't know what 1604 is, but I fixed this by doing a hard reboot on the iPhone and when it appears in iTunes and says it found an iPhone in recovery mode I hold down alt/option and click on restore and find the beta 5 ipsw file and reinstall it. I was freakin out before that so I know what some of you are feeling.

Correct, sorry it is the beta 5 that I want installed however as the phone has a lock code and I get NO WAY to enter the code, I cannot do this restore from beta 3 to 5, so how do I get past the PSoD to be able to let the Xcode allow install or enter my phone lock code?

Anyone wanting to run Beta 4... you are out of luck.
The Betas are only valid for X number of days. Once the time has passed you will get the PSoD (Pink Screen of Death).
You have to move up to the next version. To get from Beta 4 to Beta 5 you need to do the following:
Download iTunes 8.2 -
Download Beta 5 for the iPhone/iTouch (select your version) and then:
Install iTunes
Plug in the phone or touch
On the UPGRADE button hold down the option and then select the directory/folder where you downloaded the Beta 5 and it is just that easy.
Once you do that you can then see the phone/touch in Xcode.

If you did not follow the instructions above you will have a bricked phone. To unbrick you can set the phone/touch into DFU mode and then restore to Beta 4 and then go back to the above steps to UPGRADE to Beta 5.

Hi, i have an issue that I cannot seem to find answers for anywhere, anyone can help here it would be great, as I have an iPhone which expired with the OS3 and when trying to update to the new OS4, there is no way for me to do it as Xcode and Itunes wont let me connect as there is a phone lock password on the phone and there is no option for me to enter the code anywhere and the iPhone simply remains with pink screen or emergency dial and no option to enter my code, so how do I get this iPhone restored?
