Could Apple Secretly Be Working on an iPhone Camcorder?

iPhone Camera

No. Despite the Washington Post’s provocative headline, Apple’s no more “secretly working on an iPhone camcorder” now than they were “secretly working on an iPhone camera” in 2006.

Technology advances. Early digital cameras had very low resolution, now they’re in the double-digits for megapixels. When VGA cameras were no longer of any value as stand-alone products, they were integrated into cellphones. Now 2, 3.5, 5 megapixel, and even higher resolution optics are becoming likewise obsolete as anything but integrated options, and so are finding their way into the iPhone, Nokia, or SonyEricsson devices.

Those same camera kits have been used by other smartphones to shoot video for a while now. And as the low-end, highly-pocketable stand-alone devices like the Flip turn their sights to HD, the older, lower-resolution technologies get integrated away.

It’s likely Apple will provide video shooting, editing, and sharing in the next generation iPhone (we’ve seen lots of screen shots to confirm that), and fans of the iPhone, low-end camcorders, convergence devices will no doubt celebrate. Others will keep their 1080p units handy…

At least until 2011 when Apple and RED announce their partnership to produce the iPhone 4K (2160p)… on Verizon

(Joking!)

If they put video recording on the new device but not the current 3g, jailbreaking is gonna get a boost in popularity

  2. iSkythe Says:

Actually it will probably become LESS popular. People are already planning to upgrade to the new iPhone, and other Jailbreak apps will be included in 3.0 (like copy + paste)

There’s always going be jailbroken iPhones because it’s always going be technology inside the phone that apple doesn’t inpliment that people find usefull. Oh yeah of because of something called winterboard or customize.

  4. Tone Says:

winterboard gets boring after a while and las time I jailbroke my iPhone it was causing all kinds of glitches to my phone I think my jailbreakin days are over

  5. Jason Says:

I’ve refrained from jailbreaking this long, and I’d like to avoid it longer. But if video recording isn’t included with the 3G when 3.0 drops, I’ll be jailbreaking that same day.

Video on cell phones has always sucked.

  7. Carolinamic Says:

I think if tethering is outrageously high jailbreakers will find a way around it. If 3g if left off of the 3g 3.0 upgrade jailbreakers will have the same thing with a few better features. I rarely had a problem with my phone with official devteam breaks and sources. If gps apps or 30+ dollars I’ll roll with xgps. Jailbreaking is not going any where and if this in app purchasing goes the wrong way best believe myself and many others will be broken.

I meant say if video recording is left off of the 3g 3.0 upgrade.
