Apple Recruiting Developers to Beta Test Push Notification
Apple has begun emailing registered developers with the following:
As a developer actively working with iPhone OS 3.0 beta, we would like your help in testing the Apple Push Notification service. We have selected a pre-release version of the Associated Press app for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers.
Great move on Apple’s part, provided they recruit enough developers to really test the scaling of their iPhone 3.0 Push Notification system. After last year’s disastrous MobileMe launch, Apple needs to make sure their infrastructure is as bullet-proof as possible before they pull the push lever… even if they are planning some limited multitasking as well…

Help test the Apple Push Notification service
Dear [redacted],
As a developer actively working with iPhone OS 3.0 beta, we would like your help in testing the Apple Push Notification service. We have selected a pre-release version of the Associated Press app for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers.
To participate, we ask that you follow these steps:
Download the pre-release version of the Associated Press app for iPhone OS 3.0 from the iTunes Store via your desktop by entering this unique redemption code in the ‘Redeem’ section of iTunes, found under the ‘Quick Links’ section: [redacted] This unique redemption code and the functionality of the application will expire in seven days.
Install the application on a development device running iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 by synching it to iTunes. Make sure to accept notifications when prompted after installation. This application can only be installed on devices running iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5.
When you first run the app, choose U.S. English as your region when prompted. The U.S. English region will receive alerts, the Canadian English region will not. For purposes of the test, AP will be sending a high-volume of real news alerts.
If you do not receive notifications from the app within 48 hours after installation, let us know.
We appreciate your assistance,
iPhone Developer Program

I love my Mobile Me service, if the push is just as good as that, I’ll be extremely happy.

It is good now. But it was a disaster when it launched. So, the point here is that push notifications works just as good as Mobile me does now, just out of the gate!

Does this work in the UK iTunes account?
May 18th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
I got this email only to be disappointed as its not available in the UK.

Where can I get that code?
I have iPhone 3.0 beat 5.
Do developers get one code only?
I would like to test it out…thanks
any links would be cool!

I’m pretty annoyed. Surely they have to test it in other countries other than America!!
May 18th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I’m pretty sure that they’ll start in here then move to other countries…
Anyone that can’t use it can let me test it:)

Hopefully you are right!

Ps. Codes are locked to your iTunes account. No luck KORG

@Brendan Why would you be annoyed? It’s a pre-release app that Apple is using it to stress test it’s push servers and Apple is a US based company. Makes perfect sense to me.
May 18th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
@Justin why let people know about it that can’t test it if it’s only available for Americans… they don’t even love us Canadians

Two questions for non-US devs… 1) Did you get the email with the app download code? 2) If so, you can’t just select US to test it?
May 18th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Just read on MR forums that UK devs were sent the email, but couldn’t use the code. That’s pretty silly, why send the email to all devs if they only want to test in US now?
May 18th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
You’re exactly right Justin. Apple is only testing their service. They are using American developers and iPhone simply because there are more American developers. Whether they test it in English, Chinese, Spanish or whatever is irrelevant, they are merely testing the service. If you aren’t helping out with this test, the only thing you are missing out on are sample pushes from the AP app, who cares!

well…not all us devs are getting any emails from apple…
May 18th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Yeah, I got a code… entered it in the App store and it said US only.

Australia here, got the email – can’t get the app … lol

For anyone wanting to get it outside the UK etc just create a US itunes account which is fairly easy if you do a quick google search, and it also syncs to your iPhone too whilst keeping the original UK authorized apps.
