Next Gen iPhone Icon… Looks Same as iPhone 3G?

054539-iphone21

A user on MacTalk Forums (via MacRumors) may have just stumbled upon Apple’s icon for the next generation iPhone, buried inside the iPhone 3.0 SDK. And the big surprise?

It looks pretty much the same as the icon for the iPhone 3G.

iPhone 2,1 is Apple’s internal number for the next gen iPhone, expected to be announced at WWDC. The original iPhone 2G is iPhone 1,1, while the iPhone 3G is iPhone 1,2. The numbers show that even Apple doesn’t consider there to be much more than a point difference between the first two iPhone generations (as opposed to the iPod touch, which went to 2,1 last fall).

The use of iPhone 2,1 led many to believe the next gen iPhone would have more differences than the addition of 3G and GPS last time around. And while it still might, including processor bumps, digital compass, a better camera, etc. if this icon is accurate it looks like few if anything will change on the outside.

    I the exterior doesn’t change. It’s not overly thick for my taste and I would be unhappy if the countless accessories i bought stopped working because the new iPhone couldnt fit. Theres no reason for the shape to change for a camera, cpu, ram etc. upgrade it really would be change for change sake. The only way I’d support exterior changes would be for a bigger battery…BRING IT ON!

    After zooming in on those images really closely, I noticed that the pictures in 2,1 (non-white one) are of a slightly lighter colour than those in 1,2. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it could mean they are one again putting the metal back on, with the lightness representing a silvery colour on the back instead on a black. But then wat would that make the white one.. I dunno..

  4. Kills Says:

    Anyone know the official release date for the 3.0 software?

  5. Tbranan Says:

    Trust me guys, I am in the wireless accessory business, the new iPhone will be SLIGHTLY different enough to make you have to buy new product. The only thing that won’t change will be the chargers. Sucks, but it’s true.

    @Tbranan

    I REALLYREALLYREALLY hope you’re wrong enough to make my Griffin car holder still fit!

    Here’s a solution to the accessory dilemma, don’t buy cases and garbage like that. There’s a reason they made this thing with scratch resistant glass and why protect the backing from inevitable scratches if you’re not going to see it undet a case anyway. I know people who have practically doubled the cost of their phone with worthless accessories that only make the phone thicker and clunkier.

  8. bubbatex1 Says:

    @tbranan – so, maybe for a slightly bigger battery? Would suck for all those folks with the mophie juice packs, etc. too.

  9. Jessi (jessi_9783 Says:

    @AI My iPhone 3G is too d@mn slick to be used naked. Also the back scratches all to h3ll. I use a SwitchEasy Colors that came with 2 screen protectors, headphone jack cover, and a dock cover all for $14.95. It’s not worthless nor does it make the phone clunky or thick. I, like you, know people who invest a lot of money into the protection of their devices. But unlike you I don’t judge them for it. I just assume they haven’t found the right protection for their needs. Drop protection is important to many people. It isn’t important to me which is why the Colors case is perfect for me.

    Those icons are different. Only slightly but they are different so something I suspect will be different.

    I am not above shoplifting these accessories from the Apple Store, they need to either stop making so many subtle changes to render my previous purchases useless or beef up their store security! YOUR CHOICE APPLE!

    Well it’s simple, that is because the next iphone is basically the same as the last iphone released. People are getting all excited that Apple will release another “wonder phone”, Apple is more interested in their app-store.

    Here’s a clue for you Al: Do a google Image search for “shattered iphone”. There are about 124,000 hits.

    @Al:

    And how do you get it into a good position to be used as a jukebox + speed cam warner while driving? Superglue it to the dashboard and break it loose with a screwdriver everytime you get out?

  15. Al Says:

    Mine works brilliantly as a “jukebox” but I prefer to call it an iPod. It rests comfortably on one of those rubber pads which was a gift from my grandmother several years ago. I’ve dropped it once or twice but that’s about it, there aren’t any scratches or dings in it and I’ve saved myself from buying a 5 cent piece of plastic for $29.95 plus tax.

  16. Al Says:

    It’s one man’s opinion obviously there is no consensus on this one.

  17. Microcosmos Says:

     I’m glad there are no major changes to the appearance of the iPhone.  That means there are no major changes to its function!  Which is a good thing.  As for accessory compatibility, if your current accessories don’t work  you can give them away or sell them along with your current iPhone. Everybody wins! 

  18. CR!$1H!@% Says:

    Some people are so stupid!!! How the **** are u expecting a bigger screen!!! Don’t u understand, the applications on the appstore are set to work on the current screen of the iPhone! So if they make it bigger or make it higher cuality it will **** up the applications and that means that ALL the applications on the appstore are going to have to be redesigned so they look good on the new screen and that will make the appstore on the new iPhone start from 0 apps again, and apple will not risk the other phones from having a bigger number of apps on their appstore!!

    They are putting on a metal back and search up iPhone 4g then gizmod.com or something like that has the concept photo with the addition to the oled the phone can be as thin as the Ipod touch. And the apple logo will “glow”
