Next Gen iPhone Apple Logo Really Will Light Up?

iphone_oled

Looks like some of those super-crazy iPhone 2,1 rumors might not have been so crazy after all. Or, at least, aren’t alone in their craziness. After some additional black-bezel rumors yesterday, today CrunchGear gives us a companion to the glowing Apple Logo rumor:

A tipster has seen the new matte iPhone and the bugger has a light-up Apple. That’s right: it lights the freak up.

Alrighty then. We go back to asking if it will multitask as a camera flash or notification light?

And what about that July 17 release date…

    WOOHOOO!!! STEVE!!!!1 I LOVEYOU STEVE!!!!!

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  2. Miami Mike Says:

If I buy this **** it better not have my battery dead or I’ll have it flying through the apple store window!!!

Why put a freakin light back there?? What if you drop your phone alot and need rubber skin to protect it?? How would you see the “Glowing” light unless the skin is clear??

What’s the reason for the light??? Answer me?LOL

  3. Tone Says:

    so happy

  4. llofte Says:

lol. I still don’t believe it to be true… but I do hope it is ;)

  5. Frank Says:

This is sooooooooooooooooo unimportant “update”……. I’ll be putting a red skin over it anyway so……

  6. theo Says:

Please, oh please light up different colors for different notifications, or at least flash differently for different ones. That would be so awesome. I can picture Steve coming up through the stage with a glowing iPhone. Only a few days left……….

  7. Jeremy Sikora Says:

I don’t think it will effect battery life any if at all. It’s not like it will be on all the time. The real question is will it be used for things such as message indicators, etc…

  8. Wesley Says:

I guess the light will be completelly useless, until we jailbreak the device :-P

  9. zeagus Says:

Well you don’t believe it exists anyway, right? :)

  10. Glenn Says:

I would think that Apple would include an option to turn it off if battery life becomes a problem? Let’s see bluetooth, 3G, push notifications, glowing Apple logo= better battery life with the new phone? Think not. Just too good to be true.

  11. mac101 Says:

man you know whhat would be cool if the glowing apple logo was also an LED screen and it could be used for the camera when you want to see a preview of the picture

  12. Brian Slick Says:

It doesn’t have to be an actual separate light. It could be a pass-through design like the PowerBooks/MacBooks are. It merely allows the light from the screen to shine through.

  13. MattyFresh Says:

I think ur right on brian it makes more sense too me that way and its sad when we get so excited over a logo light

  14. Christopher Vitek Says:

Notification light would be cool. Of course, that means now we will need cases to show the apple.

Only problem with a notification light is that it is in the back of the phone.

    Chris

  15. himynameissam Says:

    this has made my year.

  16. icebike Says:

    @Brian Slick:

    Pass thru?

The phone is chock full of electronics, battery, and antennas and shielding.

    Take a look: http://techrepublic.com.com/2347-13636_11-210341-210632.html?seq=23

  17. Harold Says:

OMG it’s gonna be beutiful I can’t wait till the launch if I have to camp out I will. I can see myseft holding it in aww.

  18. Paul Says:

You realize how little power it takes to power an led right?

  19. Joe McG Says:

0.7 volts and a few microamps. Just let Apple’s EE’s do their job and enjoy the little light for God sakes!

  20. frog Says:

Steve Jobs heard the runours that the Apple logo wouldn’t light up – so went in yesterday to make damn sure it will!!!!

  21. icebike Says:

    @Joe McG:

Were you referring to those same EE’s who gave us a phone with the shortest battery life in the industry and which is not user replaceable?

  22. Eric Says:

I have seen cases already made for 3g iPhones that have a cut out for the apple logo so I’m sure there would be a ton of cases that woukd allow the apple logo to shine through

  23. Tone Says:

@icebike use a car charger and stop cryin so much

  24. Kael Says:

I’d rather no light. - I’m not a apple fangirl just a iPhone user. - it would mean new cases or it could get warmer then i’d like the phone if it’s all the time or if it’s for flash it’s mean a case upgrade I wouldn’t mind except for the issue of the case being more open then I’d like. - even a small bit of extra battery drain can make a diff. - a light on the back and no improvement for organizing apps or flipping screens would make me wonder bout apples priority… Let’s look cool not be cool?

  25. Kael Says:

@tone and for those who need to bus?

  26. Justin Says:

    @icebike RE: Battery Life

That isn’t even true. Compared to other 3G phones the iPhone 3G does pretty well on battery life. I think most people already know that, but just thought I would respond just in case they didn’t.

  27. zeagus Says:

“Let’s look cool not be cool?”

Yes, there’s something unheard of in the annals of Apple :) .

  28. Justin Says:

    @Kael

    Juice Pack air?

  29. OmariJames Says:

So will it double as a flash ? If so , this would be as cleaver as how Mac screens flash when you take a photo with Photobooth ^_^.

The battery better be better too.

  30. Pat Says:

    Oh yes. I want one!

  31. josh Says:

this most definitely IS the most insignificant ‘feature’ on the new iPhone.

if it DOES double as a flash for the camera, and it has MINIMAL draw on the battery, then it serves a purpose. otherwise, it is basically just making skin/case manufacturers heads spin as they scramble to figure out a new design scheme to allow the ‘glowing fruit’ to shine through the back of the case.

if it allows different colors/pulses for different notifications, meh…maybe a good thing. but 99% of the time you NEVER set your phone face-down! so you’d never see it glow anyway. and if, IF this glow is true, then my question will be: does it stay on all the time (even standby mode)? if so, this may lead to Apple finally having to address the battery drain issues of the 3G with a more powerful battery in the new version.

    damnit…is it June 8th yet?!?!

  32. Blake 2 Says:

Alliteration aside I’m betting this is true. It seems as though every device that apple has made has come with better battery life as one of the main selling points, save the 3g. Every iPod, when introduced, had better battery life on the new model. So chalk it down, the new iPhone will have better battery life.

Besides, you don’t patent a new battery technology and then future generations of your product have worse battery life.

  33. Syncopations Says:

My “Jerk Side” just kicked in.

Miami Mike said: What if you drop your phone alot and need rubber skin to protect it??

Well, if you’re clumsy enough to drop the phone a lot, perhaps you should invest in a cheaper phone.

I think the light would be a neat little feature. I hope we will have the ability to adjust the brightness or turn it off completely. Maybe it’ll light up when a call, message, or some sort of notification is received. Battery wouldn’t be a big deal. It wouldn’t take much to light 1 LED. Maybe Jobs & friends will be gracious enough to give us a better battery.

  34. Ron Says:

it would be cool if when i clapped my hands the light lite up, that way i could find my phone in the dark….

  35. Patrick Henderson Says:

Oh great. A big “Hey everyone, I have an iPhone!” beacon for mugging potential. Great idea.

  36. lordzod01 Says:

Wow; a flashing light. How will I sleep tonight. What will they think of next. LOL

  37. OmariJames Says:

    @Patrick Henderson

    Smh.

People have been stealing Apple products before any ” beacon ” or lights have ever been implimented in any Apple hardware. People will continue to steal them no matter what.

There are plenty of phones out there with flashing lights on them such as Sidekicks and Black Berrys.

  38. Adam Shear Says:

I don’t believe this light will be on all the time. Hopefully it will be used to tell the user that he/she has notifications whether that is a missed call, voicemail, SMS texting and MMS, email, and push notifications. It hopefully will light up different colors for each one and change colors if there are more than one type of notification.

  39. Daje Says:

I would really like this when ure on a call and it lights up or when someone calls u. And it lights up in the dark that would be cool..

  40. Justin Says:

Actually now that I think about it, if used for notifications it could actually save batter versus unlocking your phone to see if there is any new emails, text, etc. You could just press the lock button while it’s already locked and if there has been an email, text, or new push notification it could blink or turn a certain color.

  41. iDutch Says:

Nice, but notifications…lol i dont see myself putting my phone face down everytime. It just seems so unlogical.

  42. sting7k Says:

The only possible good this will do is if it lights up when you get a new message or something. If it’s just on while I’m using the phone I’d rather not waste the battery on a glowing Apple logo; I’m pretty sure everyone already knows what kind of phone it is.

  43. Jose Says:

It looks cool. Period. That’s it. Why is everyone pissed about it. I like it and a lot of iphone users will like it as well. If you don’t like it, then don’t get the phone.

  44. AdamY Says:

Me fail English? That’s unlogical :-P

  45. Tone Says:

@kael use the USB cord on ur computer at work to charge it

  46. Daniel Says:

    @iDutch

    that’s ‘illogical’ not ‘unlogical’

    very smooth.

  47. Eric G Says:

Wouldn’t the logo turn off when your on the phone since there is a light sensor that turns the screen off in theory the back apple logo would then turn off so people wouldn’t see it shining

  48. Tone Says:

@eric G I hope not I WANT PEOPLE TO SEE MY APPLE LOGO SEE ME ROCKIN MY NEW IPHONE!

  49. Hector Dominguez Says:

It’s a “rumor” doesn’t mean a thing. No new iPhone this year. Sorry Apple fans.

  50. Spidesol Says:

Everyone needs to shut up about battery life! get a freaking car charger or carry your USB charger and by the way if the battery last longer it just means we will use it longer so we will always be wishing for more battery life

  51. Nickel Says:

It better be optional to turn off. I don’t want to draw attention to myself just cause I happen to be using my phone. Remember those flashy antenna accessories for the old-school Nokias?Tacky as hell.

  52. Miami Mike Says:

LOL @ Tone… Yea they will see you rocking your new light up logo iPhone with a dead battery LOL

    Just watch”

  53. lol @ notifications Says:

Why would you have a notification on the back of the phone? That makes zero sense whatsoever. If its not a flash then its a useless battery drain.

  54. Miami Mike Says:

LOL ^^^ my point exaclly LOL

  55. Tone Says:

It’s not useless if it looks cool

  56. Adam Says:

Oh my god you people are idiots. Do you know how little power it takes to power the glowing apples on the MacBooks? It’s NOTHING. The one on the iPhone will be 1/10th the size and therefore will take less than nothing to power… Stop bitching.

Yes doubling as a flash and notification light would be brilliant.

  57. Tone Says:

    hector = hater

who hangs around apple iPhone sites to tell us rumors aren’t true :/

  58. Matt Sawyers Says:

If this does happen, the only thing I can ask for is that is can be turned off via the Settings.

  59. Christin Says:

Why are people so anti this?! Rediculous. If you hate it buy a case to cover it up, which you would probably do any way!

I keep my iPhone face down is that really so crazy? I don’t keep it in a case so I don’t want to risk scratching the back. I have a screen protector.

  60. mike Says:

It would be useful if it allowed for notifications, but I can’t see it being useful since it’s on the back of the phone. Anyone else think if the Pre or some other smartphone did this, people would laugh at a glowing logo? Either way, when the iPhone comes out I will have a tough decision to make. Pre, iphone, android. Choice is a good thing.

  61. Scaliasphone Says:

Wow. A glowing Apple logo? Really? G-a-y. Color me not interested in that. Unless something really compelling, I’ll stick with the iPhone 3G

  62. brick Says:

This is why Apple is in a class all its own.

But, with all these bells and whistles, are they doing anything to address the SINGLE BIGGEST PROBLEM with the iPhone (after 3.0 of course), the battery life??

I’m a heavy user, and each charge barely gets me through a day.

  63. MacSheikh Says:

Why the hell is everyone freaking out for?

It’s just a glowing Apple logo. It turns on when you make or receive a call and turns itself off when the call ends. That’s it.

Yes, I’ll agree that it’s useless. But you can’t deny that it’s damn cool! :-D

If it is even true, that is.

  64. Me Says:

I don’t see why this is such a big deal to some people. I personally see it as a negative, and not because of the ridiculous “It’s going to kill my battery!” argument. I live in NY state, where it is illegal to be on your cell phone while driving (as in many other states), and while I do not advocate or enjoy being on my phone while driving, it is nice at night to be able to do so without fear if I need to currently. With a glowing apple logo a cop will see it from a mile out and it will be ticket time just for answering my phone to say “be home in 10 minutes.”

  65. PSM Says:

I hate to be alarmist, but I’ve been mugged for my iPhone once already, I really can’t afford to have it happen on a more regular basis, and I think the functionality of the device is lost if it can’t be used in public.

In a perfect world I love Apple’s distinctive designs, but sometimes I wish they weren’t SO distinctive, so I could have all the hardware and software awesomeness while looking like I’m using a cheap Dell laptop or a feature phone.

  66. Dragonfly Says:

Personally I think the idea of the glowing apple only makes sense if it’s used for notifications, otherwise it’s completely pointless. Also the fact that it’s at the back is another minus, if however the white square on the home button lights up along with the apple logo at the back, that would be a far better solution. I’d prefer if it changed colour according to the type of notifications you recieved either that or a flashing glow.

  67. PHug Says:

I love how all you sheep just continually drink the cool-aid.

If the ‘apple light on the back’ is ANYTHING other than a flash for the camera it is tacky. VERY TACKY.

Don’t sit here telling me it’s for notifications either. 1. You more than likely use a case. 2. When your phone is sitting on a table/desk it is not sitting face down. 3. when your phone is in its charging dock it’s facing you.

  68. PHug Says:

I just realized why you D-bags want an apple shaped light on the back.

    Your need to be noticed.

The same J-offs that wait till the movie is about to start and then turn on their iPhones and raise it above their heads FOR NO REASON.

  69. frog Says:

PHug – Like it or not, if Apple release a new iPhone with a glowing Apple logo — it’ll be one of the leading tech news stories for a week!

  70. Stophere Says:

$&@$$ why do I want a glowing useless light next to my ears! It’s gonna be so stupid. What’s next apple neon under my macbook.

The best thing I like about the iPhone is how simple and nice the design is. To add a useless flashing light is lame….

  71. SpiceRak2 Says:

It’s just a light, if the rumors hold true. A light. It could just be a finishing touch. A simple glow to reflect Apple’s distinctive, cutting edge design.

When I put my phone down, it is always face down. I use a cover and the phone doesn’t slide in this orientation. I’m sure at least some do the same.

I’ll take a stab in the dark and assume that a company of the calibre of Apple has put just an ounce of research and development into the pros and cons of adding a glow to the design. I don’t see Apple sabotaging their success by neglecting battery usage (a second time).

I think it will look nice. Useful or not.

  72. Tone Says:

@me wow at a cop seeing you from a mile away wit ur apple light on your phone so lame that was the worst argument I have heard onthis topic

  73. Mr.E Says:

It’s serves for the camera and videocamera that’s it … Stay realistic people

  74. lordzod01 Says:

stop whining about battery life; buy a juice pack air if your that bothered. As for the light, it’s there but I coudn’t care less. I’m not going to wet myself, or moan about something so trivial.

    Let’s keep the rumours comeing.

  75. icebike Says:

    @Mr.E:

It’s serves for the camera and videocamera that’s it

Now that’s the best explanation I’ve heard all day.

This would prevent surreptitious video recording by providing a “on the air” light to the subject, and this is probably required in many/most jurisdictions.

  76. icebike Says:

    @lordzod01:

    stop whining about battery life;

    Why should we?

And why should we buy another 99 dollar device to compensate for an undersized battery?

Only by whining do things get improved. It took two years of whining to get cut and paste, it took two years for MMS, Video recording, etc. I expect another full year of whining will yield a better battery on the 4th generation iPhone.

In the mean time, if you are happy with your battery life, then skip over those posts, and try not to be the whining police.

  77. Charlie Says:

    think of the potential! iFlashlight!

  78. frog Says:

Touch the glowing Apple logo, and the iPhone farts!

  79. Zack Says:

i have the new 3GS and the apple logo on back doesnt light up? am i doing something wrong?
