How to: Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone 3.0 – Windows PC redsn0w Edition
Disclaimer – Neither TiPb nor I take any responsibility for any problems/issues/bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone. Please be aware of what you are doing. This will NOT work with iPhone 3GS.
There has been a lot of buzz going on in the forums regarding jailbreaking the iPhone 3.0 software lately, and a lot of questions to go along with it!. Today we’re going to take a deeper look at the exact steps you have to take to get your iPhone 3G with the 3.0 software, jailbroken on your Windows PC machine.
Let’s get started, after the jump!
Get the tools
First and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 3.0 firmware. If you’re not yet running 3.0, update via iTunes.
All good? Okay, next make sure your iPhone is not connected to your PC. Next you will need to download the following files:
Jailbreak Process
Now double click on the redsn0w file you just download to open the redsn0w application. You will then be prompted to select the 3.0 IPSW file you downloaded. Do as instructed now. Once it is successfully identified press next to continue.
Now you will have to select whether you’d like Cydia, Icy, or both installed on your phone. You must install at least one of them. Make sure your choices are checked and press next.
Next you will be connecting your iPhone 3G to your PC. Once your device is connected, hold the power button until the “Slide to Power Off” appears – then slide to power it off. Press next.
Redsn0w will not put your iPhone 3G into DFU mode. Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions exactly. Start by holding down the power button for 3 seconds.
Hold down both both the power button as well as the home button for 10 seconds.
Finally release the power button while continuing to hold the home button down until redsn0w detects your iPhone 3G.
The device will now reboot once it is detected by redsn0w.
Redsn0w will now begin the process of uploading the new ramdisk. Once this is complete you will be notified that the jailbreak process is complete. Click the Finish button.
Even though redsn0w completed it’s process your iPhone will still be finishing up. This can take up to 5 minutes. Be patient, when it’s done you will have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with Cydia/Icy on the SpringBoard.
Unlocking Process
Now if you are looking to unlock your iPhone follow these steps below.
If you are unlocking for T-Mobile USA be sure to disable 3G.
Run Cydia or Icy
Add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”.
Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w.
Reboot your iPhone 3G.
Enjoy your freshly unlocked iPhone 3G running the 3.0 software!

As TMobile doesn’t support 3G on the iPhone, users should disable that.

I am having an issue:
1) Run Cydia or Icy I CAN DO THIS ONE.
2) Add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ‘ADD’? I SEARCHED AND COULDN’T FIND THIS .COM FILE ON CYDIA
3) Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w. COULD NOT FIND THIS ON CYDIA.

I did a jailbreak on my iPhone 3.0 on Tuesday as a first timer using Redsnow 0.7.2. It only took about 15 minutes total and most of that was just sitting there watching my phone and PC do it’s thing.
Jailbreaking was the smartest thing I’ve ever done with my iPhone. Even if you only install SBSettings, it makes your iPhone so much easier to use. Everything is completely stable and working great.

@mike add the .com link to the sources section in cydia. You will then be able to search for and install ultrasn0w.

Tap the “Manage” button at the bottom
Tap “Sources”
Tap “Edit” button on top right corner
Tap “Add”
Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com
This is how you add a source.

Mike, for step 2 you need to “add” the source to Cydia before you can search for ultrasn0w. To add the source: open Cydia, wait for it to stop loading, tap Manage (on the bottom bar), tap Sources, tap Edit (in the top bar), then tap Add on the top left. Enter “repo666.ultrasn0w.com” without the quotes, then tap “Add Source”. Once it’s added successfully, go to the Search tab on the bottom and search for ultrasn0w. After finding it, tap Install, then Confirm.

jailbroke my iphone exectly. used it for half hour, sudnley all icons from menu vanished, not even sms,contacts,camera…. completly empty. i still can recive calls and sms but cant do eny thing else. i will try to do this proces again!

@Daniel, same process but you will need to download a different IPSW file. The file I attached to this guide is for iPhone 3G only.

when i go into cydia, it asks to update essentials. i clicked “update essentials” and it says “error. Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2).” please help

Don’t count on it. That mode is buggy as hell, and every virtualization platform I’ve tried has problems when installing new software releases. Most virt machines work well enough for Itunes syncing, but usually when the phone starts disconnecting and re-connecting it crashes either the virtual machine or the host machine.

iTunes 8.2 works fine after the jailbreak. This is the latest version.
Also, install and use Cydia but not Icy. Icy doesn’t work well on 3.0 yet.

kilo95 I found a way around that with cydia install the proggy then find a program called iphone browswer. http://code.google.com/p/iphonebrowser/ use that to delete the cydia package then jailbreak again. bam you have cydia and you are able to update.

I got redsn0w to open but I can’t find the ipsw file anywhere. There is no .IPSW file in .zip file from the link for the OS provided. I also searched my computer for “*.ipsw” and get nothing. Has anyone else seen this happen? Is it different in Windows?

the Ipsw file is the same file you would download from apple to install the iPhone OS. It is also the file you downloaded when you updated to 3.0. Search on Youtube for iPhone 3.0 jailbreak. There is a video which lists a link to all the different iPhone Ipsw versions depending on what version you have (2g or 3g).

I did this exactly as it said and my iPhone 2G says “No Service” I believe I did something wrong and have been searching all over the sprawling wasteland they dare to call the internet and am unable to find a definite answer of how to correct this. Any help is deeply appreciated. Thank you!

Yeah Redsn0w crashes often on Windows Vista but it will work if you do not install Icy.
I get a lot of crashes from Cydia with this 3.0 upgrade.
I cannot get OpenSSL/SSH to install due to folder missing(Same with ICY)
Cydia will only work if you don’t restore your info from a backup.
If you sync with your older iTunes info, your existing icons will go away. you’ll have to restore 3.0 to get them back.
There is no way to go back to 2.2.1 either. You’re stuck with 3.0 until a more stable version comes out… i’d just wait for that!

yo, man! awesome… it works. so, if you by any chance get an error regarding the DFU Mode not recognized (as i did) it’s probably because you don’t have iTunes installed. hope this helps.

I have done all the jailbreaking steps but when I try to unlock it so I can use it on T-Mobile, Cydia will not load up because it says I have no internet connection. I am using my grandma’a at&t sim card to try and unlock it but she doesnt have internet on her plan..but I am connected to Wi-Fi but it wont help in loading any web pages..what am I supposed to do in order to unlock the phone?? Hey guys, trying to jailbreak my iphone for the first time in ages. It’s a 3g 8gb running 3.0.
When it gets to the “waiting for reboot” it just stays there … I left it for about an hour and still no change.
Is there something I should be doing … like pressing any of the buttons or could there be something else I have missed.
I am running Vista x86 and have changed the compatibility options to xp of redsn0w and am running it as administrator.

@Chris: YES! BUT you need a different IPSW file. The iPhone 3G has a different IPSW file than the iPhone first gen.

iphone 1,13.07A341custom_restore.ipsw and also redsnow 7.2…………..i also have updated my phone to the new OS 3.0…..however when i open redsnow and browse the ipsw and selected it, redsnow came with an error that its unable to process the firmware…….can anyone help?

had 2.2.1 jailbreak, several apps in “Categories” did the 3.0 update and successfully jailbroke w/ redsn0w, but the apps i had in “Categories” folders are now invisible. Also i am unable to do anything in Cydia…keep getting errors…any ideas anyone?

Update to post 68 regarding Cydia errors: this relates to a required “Essential Upgrade” with three options: “Upgrade Essential”, “Complete Upgrade”, and “Ignore (Temporary)”, with both upgrade options ending in errors, and ignore doesn’t do anything, but trying to install any package ends in error. Please help? I’ve got many apps “locked in ‘jail’” since the 3.0 update.

Use Firefox to download the IPSW file, only then you can locate it.

For those having difficulty locating the IPSW file after downloading it, do not bother to look for it, you probably wouldn’t find it. Use Firefox to download it instead, only then you can locate it. Hope this helps.

IPSW PROBLEMS!
If you have downloaded the file “iPhone1,23.07A341Restore.ZIP just rename it to iPhone1,23.07A341Restore.ipsw then it works fine.

i recenlty added winterboard and had set the dock to transparent then downloaded a few other themes from cydia. few days ago my dock was no longer able to become transparent. I don’t know if it was a problem with wb or what but i reinstalled everything then removed everything else i dl from cydia and still wasn’t able to have a transparent dock any ideas? i’m having to restore my phone then re jailbreak it not a very fun experience putting all the music back on.

Anyone having problems with the software crashing during the “ramdisk” part, believe it or not if you grab the window and continuously shake it (typical windows), it actually doesn’t crash. i couldn’t believe this so i tried it myself and it worked. RESULT!!

Every time I go to download the 3.0 firmware for the iPhone 3G I get some zip file, which when opened contains a bunch of .dmg files and an assortment of other random files…none of which are the ipsw. I’ve downloaded/saved the files from numerous sources so I have no idea what the problem is. If it helps, I’m on a PC running Windows XP. Please help!

I’m on Windows XP pro SP3, iPod Touch 2G with OS 3.0, Redsn0w 0.7.2. During the jailbreak operation, redsn0w successfully identify the 3.0 firmware, then I click next, Dialogue box appear: “Preparing Jailbreak data, connecting to sever” Then redsn0w gone (Disappear!).
I repeat around 100 times, it still the same. I try with another PC it still the same. Before I’m successfully jailbreak iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G. but now fail to do so..! Please help!

Everyone having trouble finding ULTRASNOW.. Spell it correctly u l t r a s n 0(this is a Zero)w. Everyone having issues with “error. Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2).” Rejailbreak and only install cydia. if you install both icy and cydia their is a file that gets bashed and causes both to fail. I fixed my iphone by rejailbreaking and only loading cydia, after i updated all of cydia, i loaded ICY from cydia

Hey I recently jailbroke my 3G 3.0 iphone and i have the cydia icon and was able to use the ultra snow. the problem im having is the fact that i am unable to connect to the internet via 3G/E ..keeps giving me a error message saying.. “you must have a cellular data plan to use this service.. any hints ?

Help!!!! I have a 16g 3G with 3.0 os i do not have the original sim card and have restored it. I’m getting stuck on the 2nd reboot I’ve tried different usb ports i’ve even tried different computers with windows XP i am using vista. I’ve upgraded itunes and tried it in safe mode. What am i doing wrong?

I have a 3g with 3.0 and I am using redsn0w 0.72, it gets stuck on Waiting for reboot, I restored my phone and tried it again, this time waiting much longer, nothing is happening. Do I need to help the phone reboot?

As a couple of people have reported, redsn0w crashes in Windows 7 RC1 if you try to install Icy. Leave that box unchecked (you may install Cydia) and all is well.

HUGE problems.. Whenever i get to the downloading jailbreak data (the last step with the picture of the green arrow and hard drive) it just has that screen and the loading icon and it doesnt do anything.. I’ve tried it 5 times and had to restore it every time! Pleas help!

WOW… i was a skeptick and Did not want to jepordiz my Iphone. but I gave it a shot… it works… Its awesome.. REMEMBER when you are in the steps abouve Hold the the Home botton as long as the Jailbreaking sofware is running it could take longer then 25 sec. so hold the dame button other wise u will get an Windows ERROR message.

Even after inserting the SIM Card if you are still getting “NO SERVICE” then pls check if u have the same problem in a different phone. Sometimes even if the signal is not detected due to signal coverage reception problem u would get “NO SERVICE”.

If 3G or Edge still aren’t working, then you probably might not have officially activated them through carrier, so instead of needing to do that, try setting your Data Roaming Options to On, which helps bypass this problem, since it forces the phone to connect to “roaming” facilities such as 3G.

When it gets to the “waiting for reboot” it just stays there … I left it for about an hour and still no change.

You will not lose your contacts songs or pics if you have them in itunes. To be on the safer side make sure you manually backup your photos rest you can always get it Once your phone is jailbroken you cannot go back to “un-jailbroken” (if you meant original version) Its a tedious process to do that. If you update to 3.1 with a jailbroken phone you will not be able to use your SIM CARD. Wait for the update until 3.1 jailbreaking tool is released (which will not be any sooner) coz the 3.1 beta is only released now.

I am using T-Mobile on a 3G iphone. Everything else works great, wifi, sms, phone, just no edge. If you could post a good walk through on how to edit the plist that would be great. Difficulty isn’t a problem as long as the instructions are written for someone who’s never done it.

Need Help!! When i donwload “iPhone 3.0 firmware” for windows, WinRAR extracts it but there are mutiple files and none of them are .ispw formate. How do I get this extension. ok so i was able to cancel the install and try the process over again…..and each time it looks to me like its trying to reboot and install the jail break software, but then the phone just sits there and doesnt do anything for as long as I let it sit there. not too sure what to do this point except not jail break my phone….oh well sucks to be me then huh. lol

I have a 3g that still has the itunes symbol at the top of the screen with the little usb cord on the bottom… Itunes saw the phone once and asked if I wanted to install 3.0 firmware via Itunes 8.2. I guess my question would be, how do I get past the Itunes USB screen so I could actually get to the application screen?

This symobilzation means that you are in “Recovery Mode” So cannot see any applications in here. You can only update the firmware by doing Shift + Restore on Itunes and that will give you the browse option to select the downloaded ipsw file to update. So i am not sure which step you have completed.

If you Jailbreak your phone it will give you the icons otherwise it lock on a emergency call only screen
If you need to unlock then you should have checked “unlock” which will be in the screen on redsn0w 0.72 where you check “install Cydia” or “install Icy”

If you get that msg, try to refresh the sources. You just need to refresh the source by clicking the refresh button that you will find on the top left corner when u go to “sources” tab at the bottom. Unlike Cydia , ICY already has all the mail sources added however when u hit on edit and then add or the “+” sign and select “add all ” and then select done and try refreshing again for two or four times. This way it worked for me

I will try to make it as simple as possible however i am not good at explaining and forgive me for that.
There is a carrier .plst file which will be under system ->library-carrier bundle->here you will find a list of carriers like vodafone , at&t , orange and many more.
here you need to choose the correct carrier folder which contains “TMobile_bg.bundle” in which i presume “bg” represents the country (bulgaria may be)
So there are about 12 “TMobile_(country name).bundle ” SO you need to select your country folder in which u will find 4 files and one of which is “carrier.plist “
If you open that file with an editor you will see an entry as below
AllowEDGEEditing BookmarkURLs
YOU WILL NOTICE THAT ” AllowEDGEEditing ” IS MADE “TRUE” THIS ENTRY IS ADDED BY MYSELF
A normal carrier.plst which does not have EDGE option will look like below

So once u add the entry and save it then restart your iphone and voilaa!! you should have “cellular data network” in which you can enter the “apn” settings
NOW THE PROBLEM IS YOU NEED A “IPHONE FILE MANAGER” OR “IPHONE PC SUITE” to get to navigate through to reach the carrier.plst
This is the hard part as you need to download the iphone pc suite . I downloaded a Korean pcsuite and installed it . I am not a Korean to understand the language but i just logically clicked on buttons and had it installed and then there was option to change the language to English(which was not easy was going through every menu) and this is done a WINDOWS machine

I am running firmware 3.0 (7a431) on my iPhone – i have tried quickpwn and redsn0w with no success it appears that my iPhone wont go into DFU mode, i have tried reverting back to 2.2.1 and many times trying different ways of getting it into DFU mode with no success anyone else experienced this or no of the answer?

Thanks for everyones responses. I ended up figuring out why I was doing wrong however when I try downloading the rep0666 I get this message saying Did not Find Repository. It says it’s a Legacy Installer and it’s not supported and I need the exact repository URL. Does anyone know of an alternate URL that will work? I think it might be because I restored an old iPhone to the phone I’m currently on. Can anyone help me on this topic?

Hey guys. I just bought an ipod touch 16 gig, updated to 3.o, jailbroke no problems. I then bought a 32 gig and tried the same exact process and when redsn0w tries to reboot it after DFU mode, the ipod, won’t reboot. I end up having to restore with itunes. Let me back up though, the first time I did it, I was using a laptop with vista basic. This laptop is vista home premium. Not sure if that’s what’s causing the problem or not. Also I used the itunes folder where the 3.0 restore was located, instead of downloading it from this site. Doesn’t seem like that part would matter considering it’s not getting to the point where it uploads. Once I had it go all the way through, but the ipod wasn’t powered on, so I don’t know how it thought it jailbroke it. Did Apple release something in the past few days in their 3.0 upgrade that prevents redsn0w from rebooting the ipod touch during the jailbreak process? I found the problem…. Just be sure to use the ipsw from your itunes folder on your computer. i got a little further. redsn0w is still crashing but i’m thinking i’ll have that fixed in no time.

Fixed the crashing by installing ICY first, then going back through and installing CYDIA. So far so good. Good luck with those struggling.

ok, i did every step, when it came to choosing cydia and icy, i untick icy and only install cydia. now that my phone is unlocked using ultrasn0w (yay!) i can’t upgrade cydia. when i selected complete upgrade, when it’s downloading, i always get the error “POSIX Connection reset by peers” with apt.saurik.com repo above it… i just can’t download anything from his repo source? any help? my wifi works fine, i redid everything three times and it still doesn’t work?? is saurik’s repo down or something that i can’t download them? thx for ur help

ur problem is the ipsw. i had the same problem but i back tracked. Make sure u have the right iphone firmware downloaded on ur desktop. i had the first gen downloaded but my iphone was a 2g iphone 3g and i was wondering why it would stay at “waiting to reboot”. i hope that helps…

Hi guys,
This is my first time jailbreaking so I need some quick clarifications. Hope someone here will help me out.
I live in India and I have a Vodafone locked iPhone 3G and all I want to do is jailbreak it,. I DO NOT want to unlock. I just want know if:
1) This is completely reversible (if I just restore in iTunes will my iPhone be back in jail like it was the day i bought it?)
2) Can I still install apps from the AppStore the normal way cuz I have loads of free apps the I would like to continue using.
3) Would adding music, vids, photos etc still be done the same way (through iTunes)?
Sorry about the n00b questions but it is my first time and im a lil apprhensive.

When the iphone reboot it give me the icon of a USB cord and the Itunes icon. Look like its telling me to run Itunes. When I run Itunes the software is telling me the phone is in dev mode and I need to restore it. What am I doing wrong?

I jailbroken and unlocked my phone and everything works great, but later in the day, I am not receiving incoming calls. I can still make calls, retrieve data but do not get the calls when people called. Rather sometimes I get a missed called message or when there’s a vm. Does anyone have the same problem? @Jimmy: Run redsnow from the zipped folder. Just click on it and you will be asked to “extract, run, or cancel”. Don’t extract, just run it. Worked for me.

Hi All,
I went through all the Q&A on this page as well on other websites. Many have asked the question I am going to ask but no one have replied. Please Help !!!
I have all the required files downloaded in a folder did all the steps exactly (for about 30 different times). I can get to until the iphone screen goes all “White” and when it should show “Downloading Jainbraking Data” my iphone flicks once and then a black blank screen for infinite time, how ever the redsn0w software says its “Done”.
Can someone help me on this please.

i unlocked my iphone with the latest redsnow and it worked. later i did a restore and tried to unlock it again but my iphone just shows the network signal, network name and slide for emergency. itried using redsnow again but it doesnt get past the waiting to reboot stage and even when it does it doesnt show the pineapple logo on the apple screen. i really need to get this done.

Hi. I have the 3G Iphone unlocked and jailbroken. I had my sim card in there and have been using 3.0 for a few days on T-mobile. Yesterday my service crashes, I repeatedly get “no service” or “searching” signs. My phone hasn’t worked and it’s been unlocked and jail-broken again and I got a new sim from tmobile. works exactly as advertised.
I did a Backup of my iPhone immediately prior to the procedure.
After the jailbreak and cydia ultrasn0w unlock it worked with my SFR SIM card in Paris and London. I again restored to my previous state and it was like my phone was never touched.

Alright this is somewhat stressing me. I’m doing lots of research and many people have my problem but a solution is never quite stated. I have a 2 g iphone. there is NO sim card inside. I have downloaded redsn0w 0.72 and extracted it opened it, browsed for the iPhone1,23.07A341Restore and then clicked next, I then followed the instructions regarding the buttons being held. then it did some zippy loading and is stuck on “Please wait while your device is being jailbroken” then below it I see a “waiting for reboot” Mind you this is still an AT&T iphone (maybe not now that i have done this to it) I have tried multiple times. One time I even unplugged the iphone deleted redsn0w and iPhone1,23.07A341Restore then I re downloaded them and did the process over. Everytime I get the same result. I was patient and gav it ten minutes, then twenty then I said hey maybe it’s just slow so I let it be and wen to sleep thinkin it would be done when i woke the following morning. It was still on the same window being a pain in my rear. My head hurts, I’m stumped. Oh yeah and I’m on Vista if that makes a difference and I only downloaded Cydia not Icy. Please help. . . .like now.

People with NO WIFI after jailbreaking can try this.
Settings->Wi-Fi and put WIFI OFF (de slider from I to 0.) Then put your Iphone On again and put WIFI ON. You must see a bunch of new SSIDS.
If this not works, try the same WIFI setting from Settings->Common->Network->Wifi And put the slider to OFF. After that put you iphone off and On again. Put the slider to On again. The networks must show.
It worked here. At the beginning I had also no networks.

hey, THIS IS URGENT bassically, i jailbroke my Iphone with the 2.2.1 firmware before this, and i had cydia and the app “catergories” which put apps in folders. when i updated to 3.0 firmwarre, it deleted all of the folders and everything in them, and it is not letting me access any of the apps in there, even when i update them via my iphone or sync them directly from the computer. I also put my “settings” app in a folder, and can no longer access it. i tried resetting it to factory settings, but all it did was delte everything but the main apps(i.e safari, youtube etc) but it still hasnt given me my “settings” back, and has now deleted my passcode. Spidermang88 you want iPhone1,13.07A341Restore, iPhone1,23.07A341Restore is for the 3g. Im pretty sure thats what your problem is. I was helping someone jb a 2g and we made the same mistake for about an hour straight. We tried and tried until i finally caught the mistake.

im getting an error note saying is in red letters—your copy of cydia does not know what version it is,its self,running thisissuenormally caused by a corrupted var,lib,dpkg,status file this seems to be caused by asking redsn0w 0.7.x to install both cydia ans icy during jailbrake.thissituationis not readily fixable after the fact,so it is recomended that you restore when you can the icy package in redsn0w 0.8 may fix this as yet not fully understood bug a symple fix is to delay installing icy,,,,,,so what would be the best solution for this,does anyone know …thanks

I was having difficulty getting my 8gig 3g working and I decided to erase the iphone to erase the iphone completely via the general erase all data on the iphone option, and it erased it… But now I get an apple icon with a loading sign frozen on my screen. Itunes does not see my phone, and when I tried using redsnow, it looks like its working but then after it boots down to the apple logo with the frozen loading sign again. Also the battery meter stays at red and the phone will not charge… Did I just brick my phone?! Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks in advance…

I have an iPhone 3G with 3.0 and i have been trying for a few hours now and can not get the phone in to DFU mode i have tried everything, i have followed the instructions to a T. I am running XP and i turn it off get redsnow, ready and then hold the power for 3 seconds and then i press the home button while still holding the power. Then i wait 10 seconds and release the power button just holding the home button, and nothing happens with the iPhone 3G, and redsnow tells me there is no devices in DFU mode, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Folks, please help me I am in big troublle, I jailbraked using the steps mentioned above. My phone went on recovery mode and hence did a Shift + restore and selected the 3.0 IPSW. Once I did that it seems my phone is blocked. I can only see emergency calls page. Please help..

When iphone is jail broken using redsn0w it may not show the Mobile Network. To get the Mobile Network working you need to Unlock the iphone. To unlock the Iphone you need to install ultrasnow – following are the steps. ** I had the same issue which was resolved once I installed ultrasn0w
( For Newbies – details of step 4 – after launching Cydia application go to Manage Tab and click on Sources – select Edit and then Add. prompt with “http://” will appear – add the url(repo666.ultrasn0w.com) given below in step 4 and continue )

try entering the phone DFU mode and then run redsn0w. if it’s not working then restore in iTunes and try again.

Great manual, but what it lacks is the info on how to add the repo666. it took me some simple googling to find out, anyhow;
Under cydia->manage->sources->edit->add. type in the address and you might wanna add a ” / ” in the end of the address just in case.

i opened up redsn0w, browse for the restore, next click cydia i have the option to do both, next i turned my iphone off, put it in DFU mode, next it stopped at rebooting another time it stayed there. tried it 4 times. wat should i do? i have a Iphone 3.0 firmware.

When I try to use Cydia to download the updates or any other item I can an error… Does anyone know why this is happening? I had my iPhone jailbroken before. The last time I did it I only put Cydia on it but this time I put both Icy and Cydia, could that be the problem? Thanks!

Just adding to what samf said. You don’t have to have att sim, you just need to have wifi connection. I connected to my wireless at home with no sim card.

I downloaded RS and the firmware..having the problem of RS not recognizing the firmware. I renamed the extracted file to end in ipsw and still nothing. Using Vista; open the extracted file and clicked on all the files inside and they state nothing with a ipsw is there. Any help?

I must be doing something wrong. I have tried 15 times. I have restored using iTubnes. Using rednsn0w I select the same .ipsw file. I power off get into DFU mode and then get waiting for reboot. I force reboot but just get blank screen. I have 3g, windows xp, and almost given up ! Any ideas/ help ?

Jules, same thing happened to me a couple of times. Started over, when it stuck at “waiting for reboot”, took the cable out of the iphone and back again in 2 secs, then it worked like a charm.

For those of you who got stuck in “waiting for reboot” during redsn0w: I had the same problem yesterday but i finally figured it out. It is because you are using the wrong RECOVERY FILE (huge file that redsn0w asks you to browse in the first page). If you have Iphone 3G your recovery file should be “iPhone1,23.07A341_Restore” and its size should be 235.576KB or 230MB
If you have Iphone first gen, then your recovery file should be “iPhone1,13.07A341_Restore” and its size should be 234.760KB or 229MB
when restore file is wrong iphone has problems rebooting the device.
I hope this helps… It worked for me, its a hassle downloading a 230mb file twice…

Mashad: your phone may have gone into recovery mode. - Go to itunes and see how it reads your iphone. - If it is in recovery mode, please shift and click restore. Browse to the downloaded IPSW file and then click next. let the complete process happen. Once it’s done run redsn0w and jailbreak. you problem should solve
Make sure you go step by step or the phone will be locked and the process will have to be repeated.
Run restore on itunes 8.2 only

I was finally able to re-jailbreak my phone with redsn0w last night.. I was downloading the same stuff I previously downloaded thru Cydia on my 2.2.1 software and when I downloaded Snapture, it froze and restarted, now when I try to access Cydia, it tries to open, but closes right away. Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on?? I hope i don’t have to jailbreak it again and start over!!

I had this same problem for a couple minutes, and I’ve seen it asked countless times… all I did was right click on the firmware file and copy and paste it to my desktop, and then again, (you should have like 3 by now) then when I browsed I seen the third one I copied…worked fine.

I overcame two problems mentioned above: 1) redsn0w was not putting the iPhone 3G into DFU mode and it was because I was using redsn0w version .8 for the 3GS not .72 for the 3G 2) after jailbreaking I “reset All Settings” (to give it to my sister) and I got hung on the Apple Logo with ‘loading cycle’ as Tim did. I had to put the iPhone in recovery mode by pressing the power and home buttons for 30 seconds which reloaded the 3.0 OS and it lived again.

also, i have tmobile and i received this phone yesterday for my birthday and, i have never had AT&T. I have an iPod Touch (new-not older generation) and when i connect to iTunes it asks for a SIM card. I updated to 3.0 and before I did that I could access stuff like Apps and WIFI Internet and now I can’t even get on iTunes to connect it. It works EXCELLENT!!! I unlock my 3G phone in Panama, Republic of Panama, no information losses, After finish I can access all my itunes downloaded aplications and it is working fine after 3 days . Hey guys…. I just got an iPhone from http://www.greatipodexchange.com a 16gb white 3g for about $360.00. I updated it to 3.0 firmware, downloaded the two programs aboved and ran Cydia on the iPhone… however… it is not adding the source into Cydia… Is this because I need to have an AT&T sim card? I have 2nd gen iPhone. When I get to the part where u hold power button in then home button I can’t seem to get it in fdu mode. When I try it turns my phone on for a sec or 2 then shuts off and doesn’t enter fdu mode. I tried over n over just does the samething. Using XP or Vista. you need to open “My Computer”
XP – go to the top menu and slect options > Folder Options
Vista – Top left button that says Organize > Folder and Search Options
In that window you need to click the ” VIEW ” tab on top.
NEED TO SELECT
” SHOW HIDEN FILES AND FOLDERS “
Then unclick the option to ” hide protected operating system files “
Once that’s done click “apply” then ok and exit out of the window.
then go to this dir
users > “USERNAME” > appdata > roaming > apple computer > itunes >
and the folder holding the downloaded file will be there.

Used redsn0w when first came out and ran sweet. but i have just noticed that mms is not working. i am on o2 uk and have sent the text mms to 1010 and received the text back saying that they will let me know when it is working, that was 2 hours ago. I have read the post by JFSakora saying that email needs to be used. does this mean that after the jailbreak mms does not work no matter what? Any advice would be much appreciated, I just want to know if there is a fix or I have to live without. Thanks in advance

I can’t thank you enough! I’m living in Germany and previously unlocked my 2G 1.1.4 OS iPhone using iLiberty (a year ago?) and inserted a T-Mobile/Germany SIM card which worked but didn’t give me all of the iphone functionality (i.e. no Edge network, only wifi for data). I accidentally updated to the 3.0 OS this week which put my phone back into an un-jailbroken/locked status. I followed your instructions to jailbreak and unlock the 2G (now) 3.0 OS iphone using Windows and after much searching for the correct .ipsw file and 3.9/4.6 bootloader binary codes finally got it working! For anyone experiencing RedSn0w reboot problems, use version 0.7.2 rather than 0.8. I tried everything possible with 0.8 with joy but 0.7.2 worked straight away.
You will notice the Unlock checkbox is not present on 0.7.2 but it doesn’t matter, just download Ultrasn0w in Cydia and this will unlock the Iphone.

My problem is the I am installing this jailbreak properly – and ticking the box to add cydia to the installation – but no matter how many times I try and the end of the installation there is no cydia installed.

I still have a message saying no service and I cannot make phonecalls or send text messages or anything like that :S What can I do about this? Please I need help like really really fast. Yep I checked to see if it was on the second page but nothing.
The process seemed to run smoothly and I received all the correct responses from Redsn0w through each stage.
I have tried with 7.1 redsn0w with no luck and no cydia – with 7.2 I get no cydia and when I try to install icy redsn0w crashes – same goes for redsn0w 8.0
My iphone 3g was successfully jailbroken on 2.2.1 (using pwnage) but I just cannot get it to work on 3.0!
I am at a total loss to understand this – I have run the process 4 or 5 times now with no luck each time.

have to do is just update your Cydia ( Full
update ). First,I just update only essential
component and had problem when trying to

I ran the process on Windows Vista, and a 3G iPhone w/3.0 firmware. I held the buttons for the full amount of time prescribed by redsn0w, and Cydia installed flawlessly. I did need to have wifi available to complete the unlock with Cydia, but I have no problems now using T-Mobile. Still a shame that we cannot be on a 3G network with T-Mo.

@max… do you have a sim unlock underneath your original simcard? if so remove it, the same thing happened to me and i removed my second sim and am only using the tmobile sim…

@All those having a reboot issue:
When you get stuck on the waiting to reboot part, just unplug the usb cable and plug it back in. Worked good for me.

Hi after i jail broke my phone, now it does not want to recharge battery. It shows that it is recharging on screen, iphone gets hot but it does not charge more than 20%. Any ideas?

any time you have a program not function properly, RUN IT AS ADMINISTRATOR.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you. I’m on a bit of a learning curve with this all, and frustrated as h%%% after about 6 hours of trying to figure out the jail breaking process. The thing that was holding me back was the absence of a 3.0 iTunes update link – which you thoughtfully provided. Anyone who had already updated to 3.0 before trying this out would have had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to put the 3.0 update into an accessible folder. SO….THANK YOU. Much appreciated.

I’ve followed every step here but I the whole process just keeps getting stuck. In the window it says “Please wait while your device is being jailbroken.” and on the bottom it says “waiting for reboot.” Well I’ve been waiting ….. I let it sit there all night! Hey I Jail broke, and unlocked my Iphone 3g white 16G, downloaded repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ and did everything, however, all I get when I put my T-mobile sim card in is a signal bar in the corner with no carrier. hi all, ive got a jailbroken 3gs 16gig unlocked to any network (done with purplera1n), and all works ok, hundreds of apps etc etc and have no problems, but ive just bought a 3g 16gig and jailbroke it with red snow, and unlocked it with ultrasnow, with 3g turned off and still get the error 0xe8008001 while trying to sync my apps, also ive got a t-mobile sim in it and whill im able to browse the web on it, cant make any calls or texts and will not receive calls, yet if i put the sim in my 3gs it all works perfectly, any ideas??

Guys the same thing is happening with me. I got my phone from USA, I am in India currently. I jailbroke my phone through cydia. I used wifi to install ultrasn0w. I switched off my phone, inserted the sim from India and restarted the phone. Still the same problem searching and then no service. Can anyone please help?

Guys i got a problem, i jailbreaked my iphone and it says no service on the top left. I went to settings>Carriers and then found my carrier but it wont let me access my carrier, it keeps on saying “Network Lost Your Selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in Settings”
How to i Fix this?

I’m having the same problem as many users. I Jailbroke and unlocked my 3G iphone running OS 3.0 inserted my tmobile sim card, and suddenly instead of all bars i’m getting 1 or 2, then the calls are being dropped followed by “searching”…..then “no service”. Every now and then i might get service but for the most part i’m getting no signal. Plz help us. I’ve re-jailbroken and unlocked twice.

I followed these instructions to a t, but when redsn0w tried to reboot my iphone it just froze up and was stuck in the waiting for reboot stage. If this is doing this for you just unplug the iphone from your computer and then plug it in again while that redsn0w waiting for reboot screen is open. it should start to reboot then. Worked for me!

I bought a iphone 8gb on at&t and tried to jailbreak it and everything went smoothly except i installed both cydia and icy and when try to unlock it it would ask for upgrade and says does not recognize the version it was running so i did research and found that i should have installed cydia only but rather then doing it again I tried to clear off setting and packages adn it did and now my iphone does not go forward then apple logo. I have tried to use redsnow again to restore my firmware it does not go forward from downloading your jailbreak data and then after 20 min or so restart and get stuck at apple logo.. need desperate help

worked as a charm. I am new to these things, so I did not know that I had to install the package in Cydia after adding the repository.
Thanks to the iphone dev-team and theiphoneblog for such a great job and clear instructions. Even tethering seems to be enabled but I am roaming internationally so I do not want to try it now!

help please. i’ve jailbroken twice using redsn0w, the first time I installed both Cydia and Icy and had problems with Cydia not knowing what version it was. So I restored my iPhone and jailbroke again, this time only installung Cydia. When I go into Cydia, it says I need to installed updates/upgrades, however when I do this I get a “Cached error”, “bad url saurik”. I can add the source for ultrasn0w, but when I try to install I keep getting an error right at the end. Any ideas?

Just Jailbroke my iPhone 3G, 16GB, ver3.00, for the first time using Redsn0w8-win_.08, only ticked Cydia, using Windows 7. Install was smooth and problem free, about 15 mins.
Works brilliantly. Love all the extra options that are now possible.
Just a work around for a problem I encountered.
Problem: Whenever i would use 3G internet (not WiFi) and try to use an app that requres internet (Safari, weather, etc) it would error saying ‘no internet connection’ or similar depending on the app running.
Fix: enable (make green) BOTH 3G AND edge. I had edge turned off, 3G on, and the internet connection did not work.
If its your first time jailbreaking, just do it. It is definately soooo worth it.
All that happens is the iPhone’s OS is updated & changed. When that has been done you just ‘restore’ your latest backup and all you sms’s, emails, apps, including the stuff saved within apps will be restored. Cant quite remember if songs are restored, but the play lists are still in iTunes, another sync + time & theyre back.
Just do it.

Yesterday I refresh my iphone through jailbreak and it’s done but after that my Card is still not accepting it shows “NO SERVICE” does anyone has idea about this?

Hi guys i really need your advice: i recently borrowed my girlfriends iphone 2G. it was unlocked and jailbroken and running on frameware 2.2. however while using it the screen froze on me, so being a smart *** i decided to restore the phone thinking that might fix the issue. now after restore the phone gives a message saying “NO SIM CARD INSTALLED, Insert a valid SIM with no pinlock to activate IPHONE” now i dont know how to get it working? any advice would be greatly appreciated. initially the phone was jailbroken using Quickfreedom.

to anyone getting stuck at the “waiting to reboot”, check that you have the correct file… in my case, i have a first gen iphone… and the file that comes here is for the 3G.

grrr.. i jailbreaked twice over these two days and my phone got bricked twice! im restoring it again now. is this version trustworthy? i couldnt download any cracked apps and i couldnt restart my iphone. help! i really want to jailbreak again..but if it bricks again im giving up.

After I ran the jailbreak program. To unlock the iphone run Cydia. Its not on the phone. How do I run Cydia? Is it ran from the phone or from the pc while the phone is connected?

I got everything to go smoothly. I downloaded everything, and it had the screen telling me it was being jailbroken. When it was finished, I looked for Cydia and it wasn’t on there. Why is this so? I’ve done everything as follows.

Okay, so I downgraded to 3.0 and got everything installed, jailbroken, and unlocked. Now, it says “Searching…” where it should say T-Mobile. The 3g setting is off, I’ve rebooted, turned it off and on, and uninstalled and installed ultrasnow again. What do I do? Please reply as soon as possible please.

Hi, just purchased an iphone from ebay on firmware 3.0 and is jailbroken which is also pre-installed with a few apps including the ‘Tom Tom’ application. When i sync this phone to my itunes will it erase the apps already stored on the phone and be replaced by any of my previously purchased apps? ideally i want to keep the apps already installed on the phone. so is there also a way to sync my back-up data to the phone without touching the apps at all? I really enjoyed being able to unlock my phone and get everything up and running.
Just one question though. My mate sent me a couple of games to try – they are in ipa format which means that ITunes then tries to install them. But this fails all the time.
Have I missed a trick in jailbreaking my phone?

One question. The beginning of tuttorial states
First and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 3.0 firmware. If you’re not yet running 3.0, update via iTunes.
I have a iPhone 3G still on 2.2.1. I want to skip this step right? Just when I hit restore/update and point to the ipsw file. I don’t want to update now cause it will take me to 3.1.2 correct.

whether this has been answered or not. I jailbroke my iphone 3 months ago with the 3.0 redsnow jailbreak and it worked but it crashed and i re did the jailbreak 1 month ago. since then after the second jailbreak my iphone won’t turn on, won’t charge, won’t connect to itunes or computer, won’t go into DFU mode, and finally the warranty is expired. SO AM I SWREWED OR WHAT THE HELL CAN I DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM!!!

OK this is a little list every1 should know; 1) if using vista 64-bit put it into safe mode hen run redsnow(restart your comp and press F8 until u can choose safe mode) 2) at this point 3.1 can not be unlocked 3)if u need to upgrade to 3.0 from a lower version hold shift and click restore in itunes, then select ur IPSW file. 4)if u cant get into DFU mode its probably because ur iphone is not connected properly. make sure it is before u turn ur iphone off and try not to tangle the cord 5)if redsnow freezes (which it wont in safemode) and ur iphone is stuck at a black screen then Shift+Restore it with itunes again

I am facing the same problem as gesmi, I have jailbreak my iPhone 3G 16GB to 3.0 and everything is working (like youtube, stocks, weather) I even added the resource on cydia and it installed, however, I keep getting the No Service and I can’t make or receive calls!!!!
Any idea guys?

Caleno, Hi, I have been using my unlocked, jail broken IPhone 3G for about 3 months now. I have a T-mobile SIM card in it. However, the home button stops working from time to time. I’ve tried the system reset by pressing down the ON/OFF button and the home button at the same time but it works once in a while. Sometimes the home button works and sometimes it does not. I took the phone to apple retail store but they are not responsible when the Iphone has been modified. Has anyone had this problem yet? Did you find a solution for it? Thanks in advance.

hi.. im in abu dhabi, UAE.. i just unlocked my i phone almost perfect but my problem is.. i cant make an outgoing call and send text messages… but there is a full signal… if i want to make a call, i have to turn on and off airplane mode, go immediatelly to call screen then just before the signal comes back you have to dial whom u want to call… but after that one call, u cant make another call.. anybody can help me? thanks…

Did as explained here.Very easy.The only problem I had was with the sequence needed to press the phone keys…. I have Windows 7 ultimate…64bit…and VMware with XP 32 bit.I unlocked the iphone 3G with VM,it took approx 15 min.It was locked with Airtel…India and after a reboot I tested it with Idea cellular.Network name,signal were displayed correctly,SMS sent and received without any problems.Thanks.

Alright… Here’s my problem… I seem to have jbroken my iphone, but I’m not entirely sure… I bought the phone from my brother’s friend and the only thing I can do is charge it. The only screens that even come up are the apple logo and then a screen with the itunes logo and an arrow pointing to it coming from an Ipod/Iphone charger usb plug… the ONLY other thing that I can bring up is the emergency calls screen… and the “shut down” and “slide for emergency calls” are the only things that seem to do anything. If ANYONE could help, I’d REALLY appreciate itand it’d save me a lot of time and aggrevation… Thanks to anyone that can help.

It just took some persistence.
It crashed like 10 times, rebooted like 15, but in the end, the phone is unlocked and jailbroken.
