iPhone 3.0 Still Causing Wi-Fi Problems?

Back when iPhone 3.0 launched, we heard Wi-Fi was giving problems to some — primarily iPod touch — users. Various network resets or OS restores seem to have quieted that down, but now TUAW is reporting that the newly launched iPhone 3GS might be suffering Wi-Fi troubles as well:

Users note that signal strength can fluctuate between one and full bars even when standing right next to the router or when a computer nearby shows a constant signal. This goes along with a commensurate reduction in speed.

Neither Jeremy nor I have been experiencing this, but if you have, let us know in the comments, along with what type of router you’re running, and what kind of speed/connection quality you’re getting (or not getting, more precisely).

(Wether this is, in fact, a widespread problem and one corrected by iPhone 3.1 we don’t yet).

  1. Rich Says:

My 3g runs fine on WiFi, but my new 3GS is MUCH slower…about half of the 3g when side by side. I get about 650 Kbps on a 3 Mb connection.

  2. Rich Says:

…and I am running OS 3.1 beta. I didnt see an improvement from 3.0 to 3.1.

  3. Ghop Says:

I use an airport extreme, I up graded to a 3gs and gave my 3g to my wife. On the 3gs my wifi fluctuates from the dot to full bars, when the 3g consistently has a full signal strength along with my MacBook pro. I have done rests, configurations and everything else know to do, to know avail. I never had signal problems with the 3g but with the 3gs am lucky if I can get a full signal.

  4. Roberto Says:

I have a netgear wireless n router. With my iPhone 3G the conneftion drops constantly, bars fluctuate and in most cases i cant connect. Before 3.0 i had no problems with wifi. Speed is also down

  5. Justin Says:

When I put 3.0 beta on my 3G I was getting a better signal and seeing a lot more hot spots when sitting right next to my girlfriend on the same 3G but 2.2.1. I also haven’t noticed anything weird with my wifi on 3GS.

  6. freiteez Says:

Just this weekend i noticed i wasnt connecting to my WIFI from my iphone 3g (running 3.0) i thought it was my router because it used to cut out alot but then my gf (who also has a 3g running 3.0) said hers was working perfectly fine. My wifi doesnt work AT ALL on my phone now (yes ive tried resetting the network settings, restoring, restoring from non back up) still doesnt work. I was actually going to go to apple today unless anyone has a fix?

When I say my WIFI doesnt work, it searches for networks and it cant find any at all when it used to come up with 2 or 3. Even in a mall it doesnt show anything.(and the mall usually has about 5 or 6 hot spots)

  7. K1 Says:

My 3GS has recently started forgetting my home WiFi connection. It’s pretty annoying. I haven’t noticed a speed slow down though, but I have noticed the reception jumping from 1 to full, which usually precedes the former issue.

  8. tsuehpsyde Says:

Been noticing the WiFi bars bouncing up and down a lot at home, even when I have a strong signal from the Router.

Phone: iPhone 3GS with 3.0 (obviously) Router: Airport Extreme 802.11n w/ USB Printer attached

I’m 15 feet away from the router and I see signal strength bouncing around. However, for the most part it appears to be working. I’ve mostly ignored it, but all the reports have made me wonder.

  9. Ryan Says:

I’ve experienced this problem since updated my second generation iPod Touch. It’s very strange. I’ll post my router information when I get home.

  10. marlie Says:

I have a 3g, and I’ve noticed in the last couple of weeks that wifi is really slow or doesn’t work for me AT ALL. I have a Netgear router at home, and I have no trouble with my computer on it, but I often have trouble loading pages when I use the wireless network at my office. Sometimes I end up just turning wifi off altogether.

  11. B Says:

I have an original 2G iPhone and have never had any wifi issues until OS 3.0…since then have had daily wifi issues. Unable to connect to network, no wifi signal even when next to Airport Extreme, unable to find wifi network, etc…everything as noted in the other comments.

I am running a full Apple setup here and have never had any previous problems. Please get it together Apple…that HTC Hero is starting to look pretty good.

  12. brewcaster Says:

This could possibly explain what I have experienced:

I like to listen to NPR in the morning. I use the Public Radio Tuner. If I use the wifi, it randomly drops the stream and reconnects, 10 feet from the router. But if I use the 3g modem, it never has to re-buffer. I think there is something to this. Heat?

  13. iRoc Says:

I can atest to loss of wifi strength of on my 3G on 3.0 It’s the sheer fickleness of the signal strength that bothers me.

I do not understand why they would muck around with end users stability if they hadn’t shown consistant improvement on a high volume of test devices. Makes me wonder if Apple sprang for more than one test device. Even a small number of users suffering from this would imply that things should have been left alone for the time being.

  14. Tank Says:

Huh, I just thought my wireless router was having issues. For some reason I didn’t equate it to this. I used to have full wireless anywhere in my house but lately the network doesn’t even show up 75% of the time now. When I do connect it fluctuates constantly between 1 and full bars.

Guess it’s another thing to add to the bug list. I had just been talking about the massive lag that came along with the 3.0 update yesterday.

  15. Jeff Says:

My Netgear router is behind my couch where I set and sometimes I get 1 bar and sometimes it’s full.

I have also noticed that sometimes it find my wireless in a few seconds other times it seems to take FOREVER!

  16. Dragonfly Says:

Yeah, I’ve got exactly the same kinda issue. I’ve got a 3g with a connection to a time machine network (@ 3.5mb), I could be in the room right next to it and the damn thing will drop from 3 bars to 2! To be honest I think that the whole router range by apple are of a very low standard. Even on my MacBook pro the latency is absolutely appalling. Not sure if it’s the software or just really bad hardware, one things for sure apple really need to sort this out.

  17. Amit Says:

I have netgear wireless 624 and iphone wifi goes down continuously and broadband speed is less too happens on both 2g and 3g phones

  18. PC_Rob Says:

Where did he get the DSL Reports speed app? I can;t find it anywhere on the app store. I can find the Speedtest.net app though.

  19. Pat Says:

    No problems here:

iPhone 3G Airport Wireless Router (N) Linksys Access Point Optimum Online Boost (30MB/5MB)

Very fast performance. No signal issues.

  20. Jason Says:

I have a Dell wireless router. I never had problems with wifi until I upgraded my 3G to 3.0 and bought the 3GS. The connection with my 3GS now is highly unstable, regardless of where I am in relation to the router, etc. The connection drops constantly, bars fluctuate and in some cases I cant connect. Sometimes the phone can’t even recognize that there is a wireless signal! This is definitely a 3.0/3GS problem.

  21. Martin Says:

I as well am having 3G S WiFi problems. Oddly, my 3G signal alone is amazing compared to my WiFi home network. My iPhone 2G loads speeds faster than my iPhone 3G S. I haven’t tried connecting to any other networks. I’m hoping it’s not a hardware issue because I still love the 3G S.

  22. Jeff Says:

Yes I have this problem!!!! I can be right next to my router with full bars and next thing I know it’s asking me for my wifi password again! It’s starting to drive me crazy. Seems like if I cancel the login it still connects… iPhone 3GS with a Linksys WRT300N router.

  23. Randy Says:

Yup, same problem as others. With my older iPhone 3G I would get 2-3 “bars” wifi from my room. Now with the 3GS, I get 1-2, if I’m lucky. Some times I don’t get any signal at all.

  24. Jeffrey Hagedon Says:

I also experience wide fluctuation with wifi signal strength using my airport extreme. It seems very random. It disappears and just as suddenly reappears.

  25. Frank t Says:

I have been having problems connecting and staying connected on my new iPhone 3GS and places where I have full bars on my iPod touch v 2.2.1 and MacBook I have had to forget the network on my iPhone and reset the network all together.

  26. Jojo10040 Says:

My iPhone 3Gs shows full bars when connected to the wifi but when I open up safari and go to a site it never loads, it’s like using an itouch without wifi…you can’t view a page…no network

  27. dene Says:

I am getting same problems ,3gs ,bt home hub 2.0

  28. Rich Cassady Says:

Both mine and my wife’s G3’s take about 10-30 seconds to connect to WI-FI every time they go to sleep. I didn’t think anything about it till I went to a friends house and it was constant? Anyone know how to fix this?

  29. macgeek112 Says:

When I am standing about 5 feet away from the router, I can get signal between 1 and 3 bars. Sometimes I also have trouble scanning for wifi networks at all. I switched on the signal strength meter in stead of the three bar and the readings were all over the place, too. It’s not just the bar misreading. I am also having very annoying troubles with Bluetooth pairing. My Phone just exits and enters pairing mode, ignores pairing requests, and won’t connect to anything else. I took me half an hour to pair with my computer.

  30. Joe McG Says:

I’ve noticed the indicator bouncing around when I’m close to my router as well. Also, I was in a hotel when 3.0 first came out and I couldn’t pick up any Wifi networks even though I could see 4 different hotel networks on my PC.

  31. Scott Says:

I’m having the same issues with wifi as everyone else. I upgraded from 2g to the 3gs running OS 3.0 on both. I never had the problem until 3.0 upgrade.

  32. angelsniper45 Says:

I havent been able to see or connect to ANY wifi networks, even public ones, I tried the ohare network and it wouldnt show up, anyone have a fix for this?

  33. Rosylee Says:

I had this problem on 3gs and 3g running 3.0. apple support escalated it and recommend new hardware. New 3gs yesterday. No change. Netgear wireless router. Issue is with all routers. Very frustrating. No help from apple. Google “strange iPhone wifi” and you’ll see apple support forum thread on this. Long list getting longer! Yours in misery R

  34. Allan Says:

I have a touch which I recently upgraded to 3.0 and just bought a 3GS. I find that I can one in each of my hands 15 feet from the router and one can have full bars and the other a dot. 20 seconds later it reverses. Definitely something wrong with the Wifi connection on 3.0. I never had an iPhone before but had the touch for quite a while and never saw it fluctuate so much before the 3.0 upgrade.

  35. Rosylee Says:

And regular phone reception is now worse. Lucky me!

  36. Dean Says:

Yeah, I’ve pretty much given up on using Keynote Remote while teaching class. If would be nice if Keynote/Remote also supported BT.

  37. Tim Fisher Says:

I fluctuate between 1 and full bars all the time. Most of the time it’s fine and full but then all of the sudden it’ll drop to 1 bar and then slowly go back to full bars, all in about 15 seconds… sometimes a bit longer. The whole time I can be standing still next to the router. I’m on a 3GS.

  38. Joe McG Says:

I find it strange that they would mess with Wifi in the software for any reason. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Maybe it’s a power save feature gone haywire. . .

  39. Al Says:

I’ve always been able to stand next to my router and not always have full bars.

  40. Spit Says:

I have the netgear n router and when i got my 3gs i had all the same annoying issues. I have now SOLVED it. Go to this link and put on the latest firmware:

    http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2331

Instantly solved all issues and now works better than my 3g ever did.

  41. sting7k Says:

Hmm, well my Wifi connectivity is fine and doesn’t appear to go up and down. However, since the 3.0 update the speed doesn’t appear to be as good. Things load much faster than 3G still, but I think they were faster. Also using the speedtest.net app and the same testing server on my laptop my iPhone 3G no longer gets anywhere near the speeds it used too. Looking at my history in the app here is what it reports.

    Average speed before 3.0 (down/up) 9Mbps/3Mbps

    Average speed after 3.0 3.5Mbps/2Mbps

Average speed testing with laptop (speedtest.net, same testing server as iPhone 3G) 15Mbps/5Mbps

I have Comcast cable internet and a Netgear router.

  42. sting7k Says:

Oh yea, router is set to ‘g’ only devices.

  43. Shadow Says:

Same problems here with 3g since I updated to 3.0( no problems before) and with my new 3gs, wifi drops constantly on both, poor reception and password incorrect prompts randomly popping up, have tried resets and restore with both and every fix I could find with no avail!

  44. Spit Says:

    Try updating your routers firmware.

  45. DubbDee Says:

I have some issues with wifi on my 3GS. Like an earlier comment, when I was streaming Public Radio Tuner it would drop every few minutes and then reconnect (at which point I would have to go through the intro recording about who sponsors the programming). But I’ve not paid attention fluctuations in the signal strength. One thing that annoys me is the 3G service. I switched from EDGE to 3G earlier today. It connected to 3G, full strength (the tower is across the street). A couple minutes later it was dropped completely from the network. I didn’t move the phone, it was just sitting on my desk. Wouldn’t reconnect until I turned off 3G and back on. Then it was fine. Is this typical of AT&T 3G service? I never had an iPhone 3G so I only had EDGE to work with on my old iPhone classic.

  46. Caballera Says:

I’m experiencing the same issue as K1. Where sometimes my 3GS will drop my home WiFi connection while my laptop and GF are sitting right next to me and they all work. Also sometimes I have to reenter the password. Since this on my home network and at work. Even when I use the correct password it’ll say it’s wrong and I have to keep trying and finally it’ll connect. Doesn’t happen frequently enough to replicate the issue to find out why exactly it is happening.

  47. Caballera Says:

One thing I did notice, if I go into settings and go to Flight mode on and then off, WiFi will then connect again with no problem.

  48. Dan Says:

I had an original iPhone that never had any problems connecting and staying connects to my Linksys WRTGL router. My new 3GS on the other hand often drops to 1 “dot” on the connection icon and also loses thenconnection completely from time to time. My router is 4.5 feet away.

  49. Jeremy Says:

I decided to try this at work with 2 of my co-workers who have a 3GS and a 3G.

The 3GS and 3G both on 3.0 performed nearly identically on both secured and unsecured networks in terms of up, down and latency speeds.

I’m not saying some people don’t have an issue, just that my test showed something quite different than the video.

  50. R1D1 Says:

Using a 3g phone with 3.0 and the original airport router here. WiFi distance has definitely been compromised. I used to connect in my back yard at full strength, a surprisIngly long distance from the router at well over fifty feet. Now I get wild fluctuation, as little as one bar from twenty feet. My MacBook Pro is not affected; it’s clearly a problem with 3.0.

  51. Adam Says:

I haven’t noticed speed issues, but I have had problems with my wireless network being forgotten and having to frequently reenter the password since upgrading to 3.0. I had somewhat similar problems way back on 2.0, but haven’t had any issues since 2.1 was released. I’m using a Belkin router and an Actiontec router.

  52. Srh Says:

Looks like a US thing my 3gs is super fast in the uk and the wifi is full and only drops I am about 20 m away. I use a very old and **** bt router so nothing that would help the phone out?????

  53. bourkee Says:

Same issues here with erratic home wifi connection with my new iphone 3GS . Whats weird is that my old 3G with 3.0 has a perfect signal all over the apt as does my ipod touch, but the 3GS drops down to 1 bar and suffers major speed issues (i turn wifi off as 3G signal is faster with utube etc. !!!)

So after all the troubleshooting (reset network settings , restore 3GS etc.) apple replaced with a new 3GS and I still have the same problem !!!

I have a linksky WRT150N router btw and it kills me that my 1st gen touch aswell as my old 3G get perfect wifi while the 3GS struggles ,,,very frustrating

  54. btar Says:

I have had this issue since i first got an iphone 3g on os 2.0. I currently have a 3GS and am experiencing same issue. my router is a dlink dual band wireless n router. neither apple or dlink have solution. my home signal fluctuates from 1 bar to full signal.

  55. Marshall Says:

i have been complaining about this since day one.

  56. Dave Says:

Same issue here from day one. Also on my 3GS cell reception is awful. I always used to have full power at my house, now I’m lucky if I have 1 or 2 bars.

  57. mobidutch Says:

I had this problem with my 3GS…I actually ended up returning it because of it. WiFi signal would fluctuate wildly, and sometimes drop the connection entirely. Interestingly enough, I have NO such problems with my 3G on OS 3.0.

I am using Asus routers running DD-WRT (build 12360).

  58. Bindu Wavell Says:

Posted this problem on your forums days ago: http://forum.theiphoneblog.com/iphone-forum/173475-iphone-3gs-bugs-issues-3.html#post1493204

  59. XaLKiDEOS Says:

iPhone 2G user here.. My WiFi was working perfectly while in 2.2.1 version (and all the previous versions) but 3 days after I installed 3.0 it started acting weird. Now it doesnt find any network even if I stand next to my router (Speedtouch 780) Downgrading the baseband and Firmware to 1.1.4 fixes the problem but upgrading to 3.0 kills WiFi again…

hopefully apple will fix it in the next upgrade!

  60. Matt Says:

My 3g has had this wifi problem since i upgraded to 3.0. It is very sloooww and sometimes disconnects. Even when standing riGht by the router. Its so annoying!

  61. Dionte Says:

3gs seems faster at everything to me than 3g is

  62. Barbara Says:

Wifi not working at all on 3GS. I had a 3G and it stopped working as well once I upgraded. Now it doesn’t even allow me to join a network. I have a linksys router.

  63. the dude Says:

i am having the exact same problems as freiteez… my phone will not connect to wifi even when right beside the modem… the weird thing is that my old 2g with 3.0 is working fine with the wifi.

  64. the dude Says:

sorry i forgot to mention that my phone is a 3g and my modem is a linksys wireless n..

  65. Owen Says:

I have an iphone 3g… Since upgrading to 3.0 on my iphone the remote application seems to drop connection about every 10 seconds and eventually comes back but it takes 30 seconds or more. With iphone OS 2.2.1 my connection was solid and didn’t drop hardly ever. All I have at home at the moment is my MBP (use a USB broadband wifi modem) and my iphone (use 3g for internet at home) and so I use my MBP and create an adhoc network on airport and connect my iphone to that so I can control itunes using remote. It has never been this unstable.

I have also had the new remote update (1.3) for a few days now and it still doesn’t make it better. After connecting the iphone wifi to my network and opening remote it takes a while to connect to the lib and after a short time it drops out shows this message… “Cannot connect to a local network…. you must connect to a wifi network to control itunes or apple tv” then if i wait it will reconnect and then drop out again for as long as i can be bothered to look at it…. It doesn’t make a difference how far away from the computer i am either… if its 5 inches away it doesn’t change anything.

  66. Owen Says:

The adhoc network on my MBP seems to be much more stable for the iphone 3g if I share my internet through the airport. Weird

  67. Desmond Says:

How long was 3.0 in beta? That’s the funny part.

  68. Roxychicx23 Says:

I had the same issue after upgrading to the iPhone 3gs. I previously had the iPhone 3g. My wifi would constantly drop out. After a network reset things would work fine but when the phone goes into sleep mode the wifi fails to reconnect. I got the phone exchanged for a brand new one but it still had the same issue. Instead of doing steps separately to figure out the problem I just upgraded my routers firmware and then set the wireless mode to b/g only. I have a linksys wrt310n router. So either the n signal or the firmware was the problem. Ever since I made those changes the wifi on the iPhone 3gs works perfect!!!

  69. Rex Says:

I just got the 3gs and my wi-fi connection seems to connect for a split second after entering my password. However, I just gave my wife my old 2g and hers seems to connect just fine even after upgrading to 3.0. My wifi router is a AT&T 2WIRE.

  70. Norbert Says:

I am also having the same problems. I just bought a 3gs as this is my first iPhone. I have noticed that my Wifi goes from full strength to no bars and I’m sitting right next to the router. I’m using a Linksys Cable Gateway router. I had the same problem at my friends house on his network and he is using a Linksys router too. It’s not too often, but it is annoying.

  71. Stanley Says:

Before 3.0 I would always have a constant signal in my office with no problems. After installing 3.0 signal fluctuates from full to one. Also the connection is not stable, constantly connects and disconnects when signal is weak. before 3.0 even with a weak signal my iphone would stay connected to the network.

  72. Lance Says:

My 3GS is having problem on my 802.11 N compatible router. When running on N/G/B (Auto mode), my iPhone will disconnect intermittently. When I stream music or videos on it, it will stop just few minutes after, never able to complete the whole thing. However, if I set my router to run on G only mode, then everything runs smoothly. It seems to me OS 3.0 has compatibility issue.

  73. Ron Jeremy Says:

Ron Jeremy’s wifi is slower on his 3gs than his old 3g also Ron’s signal goes half to full limp while sitting on the can playing poker. Apple needs to fix this issue for Ron with 3.1, Ron’s 3g speed is gobs faster than his wifi…..

  74. lordzod01 Says:

I updated to 3.0 and my 3g is cr@p now. It will not find any any wifi networks and maps is usless as it cann’t determine it’s location. Iv’e made an appointment today for the Genius bar, so we’ll see what they say.

  75. Jezza3110 Says:

I’ve noticed, particularly since 3.0, that my iPod touch has markedly slowed down over wifi connection. On several occasions normally stable programmes have frozen and been kicked to home screen

  76. dreeZruleZ Says:

    cheers all,

I found a solution that worked for me 100% (3G). Factory restore 3.0, activate with valid SIM. Do not (really do not) RESTORE BACKUPS. I have same wifi like 2.2.1

If you jailbreak/unlock use .072 only AFTER you have done the above.

    Hope it helps!

  77. Chris Says:

Since i got my 3gs, i’ve had the same problems reported here. takes a long time to connect to wifi, low bars even when i stand right next to the router (netgear wireless g) overall bad performance.

  78. Michael Says:

My 3g was great with my linksys router. Anywhere in the house I had wifi. Once I downloaded 3.0 the only way I am on wifi is when I’m within 10 feet of so from the router.

Even my 3g signal strength is a bit iffy where before it wasn’t too bad.

I keep beating myself up for downloaded the damn 3.0.

  79. Marianna Says:

Anyone have a fix yet for the wifi problem?

  80. dene Says:

I found that changing the channel number on my bthomehub 2 router solved the 3gs wi-fi problem. After two new iphones and a long time on the phone to apple ,not that they helped ,I had to root around the net to find info, hope this helps someone.

  81. Dan Says:

Purchased my 3GS on opening day. I was all excited about getting some sweet 3G performance. Back at the office my WiFi setup perfectly and same at home. (Linksys WRT600N on dd-wrt). Our CEO picked one up and is fighting tooth & nail to get the wireless going. Sometimes it forgets the SSID; sometimes it won’t accept the PW; standing right at the Linksys getting signal-to-noise ratio half that of mine from a distance of 60+feet away. He gets the same performance from the exact same hardware at his house.

  82. Wifiguy Says:

The Broadcom combo wifi chip in the 3gs sucks. Apple should have kept the Marvell chip to handle wifi.

  83. Rbakfan Says:

My old 2g has this problem. I just basically use it as a touch, with bt off and in airplane mode. I like to use pandora and finetune, and dock it in my Bose soundock, but it won’t keep a connection and sometimes won’t connect. It had this problem before 3.0. My 3g so far hasn’t had this issue. I use a linksts at work and actiontec at home. The symptom are pretty much the same as described by everyone else above.

  84. Larry Eckerling Says:

I’m concerned…I downgraded back to 2.1.1. I’m waiting for them to fix the bug, but all of the apps are getting upgraded for 3.0, and I think that soon 2.1.1 will be obsolete. And I’m hearing that the 3.1 is not fixing this problem. This is a real hassle. Since I need my wi-fi to sync with FM Touch, which is the reason I have the Iphone, I’m worried that they won’t acknowledge or fix this problem.

  85. Jost Diederichs Says:

After upgrading my 3G to 3.0, wifi became flaky: connections become slow, freeze or drop. Indicated signal strength varies from one dot to full while near the router. I used to receive my home wireless 150 feet away from my house (WAP54G Linksys), now it is 50 feet at best. Auto-connect does sometimes not happen (my local attwifi @ starbucks) or only after a minute. Also noticed that entering BlueTooth discovery mode causes wifi to drop.

  86. Robert Hawkes Says:

Hi i am having the same problem. We have 3 iPhones 2 3G and 1 3GS, Router i Belkin Pre N.. Its seems to only since 3.0 came out

  87. dene Says:

Still got 3 solid bars on 3gs,after changing the wi-fi channel number on my router.Happy days

  88. Dave Says:

Same issue. Wavering bars while feet from the router. Net gear dual band. I often can go into settings and reconnect

  89. rossp Says:

My wifi problem is a little different. 3G works great. I can access any websites. But when connected to wifi, I can’t access certain websites. Turn off wifi and bingo – I can get to them again. I can access those same websites through my wifi network using my laptop, so I’m pretty sure the issue is at the iphone level.

  90. Mark Says:

Yes I’m having the same problem. Only get 1 bar when connected to wifi. I sure hope they fixed this with next update.

  91. Mark Says:

Same issue here will not work

  92. Stephen Grant Says:

With my BT Home Hub 2.0 and Iphone 3G S – I was experiencing a low signal even standing next to the hub itself. I changed channel and within 10 seconds I had 3 bars. Great!

  93. W S Says:

I am having the problems at work my 3g or 3gs will not connect so I thought we were having problems with the network at work. When I got home the same problems will not connect. Apple please help!!!!!!

  94. JB Says:

I have an original I Phone and once I updated to 3.0 I immediately lost all wifi. It says I am connected but I get no bars and I can only function on edge. My outer is the 1terabite time capsule and my Macbook works fine off the router. This is a 3.0 issue.

  95. Olavo Moretzsohn Says:

I have lost my WIFI and 3G since I upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.0 ( 20 days ago)…that´s is not compatible with normal iphone life…simple horrible have a iphone whitout Wifi/3G…I hope TIM Brasil change my phone soon..because I have tryed all receipts to solve the problem, but this is impossible…only one exit FW 3.1 !!!! At least, I hope!!!!

  96. Dave Says:

We’ve got two iPhones in our household both 3g One doesn’t recognise any wifi networks anymore :( ( One changes between 1 and 5 bars Tried with different routers but using the dualband aebs at the moment! APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS MESS!!!!!!

  97. yesUdo Says:

I have a 3G and since the OS upgrade, cannot get WIFI to work. Have tried both a network reset and a full restore. No luck.

    Emmett

  98. Mike Says:

My 3G 3.0 first started having problems with connecting to my home and work WiFi. Than since yesterday it does not even detect any wireless networks. Never had similar issues before 3.0 update.

  99. Iain Howe Says:

I upgraded to 3.0 when it first became available (I have the original $600 phone – yeah, i know…sucker!).

Recently, my phone is not recognizing my network password. It recognizes that the network is there but I cannot log on. I have not changed any password settings on the router. Just doesn’t seem to recognize it anymore.

    Strange…

  100. L.W. Brown Says:

Had no problems with 3GS at first, then last week started degrading until WiFi was useless (only 1 bar no matter where). Tried ALL recommended fixes – nada. The store saw the problem & replaced the phone. STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE on the new one!

  101. Ken Says:

Software upgrade to 3.0 was working well for a while. Then suddenly, can’t find any WiFi networks. WiFi finder in Settings won’t find a public network I use at the office, nor my own WPA2 network at home. Tried resetting networks, and even wiping the phone completely.

After several attempts, am headed to Apple Store soon.

  102. Ashok Says:

First gen iPhone updated to OS 3.0. Wifi takes forever to connect – under 2.0 it was almost instant. Signal strength varies somewhat. Used to be able to use netatalk to connect from my Mac. Can’t anymore (though the fantastic cyberduck works).

  103. J.A.Gregory Says:

My first gen iPhone was updated to OS 3.0 Now it either fails to recognize any Wifi signals, even when I’m standing next to the router and my laptop is registering full bars, or it recognizes it for a few seconds then looses it and can’t refind it.

  104. Alan Carter Says:

Same problem with my 3GS. Sitting 5 feet from the router (BT Home Hub 2.0) and 3GS is showing 1 bar. A restart seems to sort things, but only for a few minutes – then the problem’s back.

My old 3G was fine – why have they messed with this? :o (

  105. paanta Says:

Same problem here. 3GS reception on both wifi and cell is HORRIBLE compared to my 3G. I never, ever dropped calls on my old phone, but the new one is doing it several times a day. Wifi in my home is awful (airport extreme base station) on the 3GS but not my wife’s 3G.

It seems weird that such a basic problem would have escaped Apple’s review process.

  106. yesUdo Says:

Still No solution. This is the First Apple product I have been disappointed with.

  107. Ben M Says:

3GS on ASUS Wireless N router. My 3G I used for about 6 weeks and it was rock solid at top speeds (10MB). Anytime I was in my house, it worked perfect – never a single problem.

3GS – drops N constantly and 80% of the time I’m running off 3G instead of wireless. Signal strength varies – and it will drop me and keep asking for the password.

I have now turned off N on my router – and so far so good. Friends with 3GS and B/G routers have not had the same problem.

I suspect it’s the 3GS and wireless N that results in issues.

  108. paul Says:

must be a power saving issue….when my iphone 2G is plugged in i have full wi-fi in my room. as soon as i plug it out the bars bounce around for a while until the edge “E” symbol pops up. it can stuck on this for a few minutes then all of a sudden jump back to full wifi signal. strange!

  109. CALeeIII Says:

My iPhone 3G will also NOT find ANY wi-fi networks. This happened after the last software update. The search spinner will appear for a split second and NO networks will show up. My laptop connects fine.

  110. Christian Says:

    Netgear wireless router

3G works flawless both before and after 3.0. 3GS very weak connection, lots of connection losses, even directly next to router antenna.

    This is VERY frustrating.

  111. Faisal Says:

I havnt been able to connect to the internet with my iphone 3g ever since i upgraded it to firmware 3.0. Please I need answers.

  112. Mavvy Says:

I also have been having Wi-Fi issues with my iPhone 3GS as of lately. Mail takes forever to load, or sometimes doesn’t…the revolving circle above the iPhone just keeps on going. Also, YouTube has been impossible to use, just cannot load videos at all on Wi-Fi. I think it’s time for Apple to address these problems with a new update.

  113. G E M Says:

Have the same problem everyone is talking about. Since the 3.1 “upgrade” the wifi ain’t working good at all. Can’t download the big apps anymore, bummer :( Leys go apple!

  114. Robert Says:

WIFI worked great with my 3G for months, then I upgraded to 3.0 and suddenly it’s pretty much gone! I can occasionally trick it into connecting by constantly refreshing the network page in Settings. On the rare occasions that it notices our wifi network, it will connect (sometimes I have to re-enter the password) then within a few minutes it’s back to 3G. This is while sitting right next to my laptop that shows full 4 or 5 bar signal strength. It’s driving me nuts!!

  115. K Rad Says:

New iphone 3GS user here (my first apple product in 20+ years!). Experiencing same unstable wifi signal sitting right next to a linksys wireless G router. Laptop signal does not vary and is quite strong, but iphone usually shows 1 bar only, and sometimes disconnects totally. Also have rare 3G signal (usually shows Edge) while my old Sony Erickson phone always showed full or near full signal. Very frustrating after this investment.

  116. K Rad Says:

..forgot to add, if I go into Airplane mode while having wifi trouble, and then back to normal, the signal shows full strength again, but weakens again upon use, after a few minutes. GRRR…

  117. Lance Says:

I have a Factory unlocked iPhone 3G. Absolutely no issues proir to upgradgint to OS 3.0. Now the phone just sucks, wifi wont connect at all. Will not even detect the routers in the area! Used to find my router and my next door neighbours router earlier. Anyone know how to restore the baseband of the modem and the software back to 2.0.1?

  118. Mark Says:

I have not had problems with Wifi. In fact the speeds are about the same as my MacBook Pro. I have had problems with the 3G dropping calls after the 3.0 software was installed on my old 3G and of course my new 3GS. I rarely had calls drop when I was home until the 3.0 software. Now it happens about 50% or more of the time.

  119. Mark Says:

    BTW, I have a Linksys N router.

  120. Steve Says:

I’m having the same issue with my Belkin n router. Annoying since the update cost 8 quid!

  121. Jake Says:

I have the original iPhone 3G. I downloaded the 3.0 software update when it was first released, and had no wifi issues for about month afterwards. However, iPhone will no longer connect to wifi for the past week, ‘Unable to join the network’. I’ve tried all the iPhone and wifi resets and have had no such luck. What is happening!?! Please can anyone help me?

  122. sean Says:

my iphone 2g wifi has stopped working.. i have tried everything, restore, dfu restore, upgrade to new 3.0… what the fuckkkkk. any help?

  123. Dustin Says:

I have a 3GS and the last couple days it would connect to my home network but give me an error saying there was no server. After reading the posts I went out and updated my routers firmware. Now it works fine. Thanks!

  124. Maz Says:

End reslut 3gs another apple crapy product I am returning this POS back to them!

  125. Ben Says:

I have had the same problem as everyone here, is there a resolution please? I came to this website looking for a fix but it is just a massive list of people experiencing the same! Does anyone have news on how to overcome this?

  126. pat Says:

Since I installed 3.0 last week on my touch 2G I gor WiFi problems: after waking up, in 50% of the cases, the WiFi connection does not work. Either I have to wait a few minutes or I have to manully renew the lease. And it’s slower than before: network, launch of apps …. Not a real improvememt ….

  127. Cardy Says:

I upgraded my iPod touch 2nd gen to 3.0 & when I did it cannot hold a strong wifi signal even though very close to the router, it did work before but not now. Myself & my gf both bought the iPhone 3gs & are having the same issues with wifi connection. I have done the steps apple recommened but still nothing.. It connects full strength until I start safari, email, or anything that needs the Internet. Please fix this in 3.1 apple!!

  128. Jordan Says:

I got the new 3GS after having had the 2g iphone since its release. I never had a single problem with my 2g and ever since getting the 3gs i cannot ever connect to wifi anywhere. I personally think the problem is related partly to 3GS hardware becoming to hot considering i read a report online saying that a man put his 3GS which wifi was not connecting at all in the freezer for 5-10 minutes. When he took it out he claims the wifi worked perfect until it warmed back up. This could end up being a major blow to apple if the new phone they just sold 100’s of thousands of has faulty hardware because they are definitely liable.

  129. AskSave Says:

I have an Airport Extreme router and two Airport Express units in my apartment. My two MacBooks and Linux box get perfect 100% signal, as does my iPod Touch running 3.0. My 3G iPhone, however, used to work fine on my network but now will not connect (started shortly after 3.0 upgrade), and actually never sees any WiFi networks anymore. I wondered if that module was affected by dropping the phone but after seeing all these posts I think it a soft/firmware problem. Apple please help us!!!

  130. Brian Says:

Fix: Change from DHCP to fixed IP address on your iPhone. Also change channel from Auto to 11 on your router. No wifi issues anymore. Never drops now and I have full strength all the time now!

  131. Dave Swartz Says:

I just upgraded from a 2G to 3GS today. My 2G has always been slower than it should be on my home WiFi: 2M down/420k up. My MacBookPro gets 6M down/430k up (my native DSL speed). My router is a Dlink 615 set for 802.11N (switching to G or B results in slightly faster down link speeds). I visit two other locations using LinkSys 802.11G routers where my 2G gets 6M download speeds. Today when I picked up my 3GS I found that the 3GS got 10M down/ 10M up in the Apple store. At home, my 3GS is getting the same 2M/420k speeds as my 2G. I’m suspicious that there is a critical configuration difference between the router configurations at locations where I get good speed and those where I get bad speed. I’ve also noticed that high latency routes on the internet will get significantly slower speeds both the 2G and 3GS iphones using WiFi. My tests with Atlanta as an end point run at a fairly steady 2M down but the same test with a Fort Lauderdale end point with much higher latency will show an erratic speed of 500 to 600k down. The same tests on my MacBook Pro show 6M down for Atlanta (low latency) and 5M down for Fort Lauderdale. I use the SpeedTest.net app

  132. Ray Says:

Ever since I’ve started using the iphone 3gs, I have noticed that Wifi has been a pain. The phone keeps connecting to wifi then cuts off and goes to 3g. Once I restart the phone, the wifi connection comes back but then disconnects from wifi and I get this pop up asking me to enter my wifi password. I’m not sure if this a 3gs issue or 3.0. Anyone else experiencing this let me know if you know of a fix to this. Thanks

  133. Paul Says:

Me too. Frequent signal strength fluctuations and drops. Sometimes reconnects fast and without prompt, other times asks me to choose my own network. I have to reselect my network maybe 3-4 times per day. Frackin‘ ridiculous.

  134. Chris Says:

Turning off Bluetooth seemed to work for me. It looks like Bluetooth is interferring with wifi.

  135. jose Says:

if you having wifi problems a network reset will fix the problem http://iphon3n3wz.blogspot.com

  136. Chris Says:

Jose, I tried the resetting of network method and it doesn’t work. It only works properly if I turn my bluetooth off. Then it works perfect.

  137. mikesus Says:

Well, I think I have isolated the 3.0 problem. It is with 802.11g If I lock my router to B only, I see full signal, no dropouts. If I set it to b/g or G only, it drops all the time.

  138. KiL Says:

What pisses me off most is that we had EXACTLY the same crappy issue when 10.5 came out first on the Mac. And it was a problem for thousands of users. It took Apple ages to fix it and now I’m getting the same damn nightmare on my iPod touch again. This is just lame.

  139. David Says:

I just updated my 3G software to 3.0, and wireless never connects automatically anymore. It is a much weaker signal after I select a connection manually. Why should iPhone owners have to become network experts to fix this problem caused by a software update. This is a big enough issue for me to switch to a Blackberry!

  140. Encounter Suit Says:

Same Issue. Tried restoring, blowing out network settings, fiddling with my router. I must have tried every viable solution from the Apple message boards. My phone is less than 2 weeks old! Wifi worked fine for a few days after the 3.0 upgrade…then it started get flaky. Now I can’t see any WIFI networks regardless of my proximity and router security and SSID broadcast settings. Even checking the “About” tab in the settings indicates that I have a WIFI MAC address so no dice on that one. This is absolutely unacceptable for a “modern” smartphone. Should have gone with the Google phone instead. If anyone has the same symptoms and has a viable solution please post it ASAP. This is most definitely an Apple problem. Don’t waste your time messing around with your router.

  141. Andres Bolivar Says:

So, here’s something interesting. Linksys WRT54G v4, running latest firmware. Had it transmitting mixed signal of both B- and G-. If I happened to power cycle my new iPhone 3G S, as soon as it would hop back onto the network, it would kill the whole network, router connection, everything. All computers dropped on network, and only way to get it back up was to restart the router. I switched it to G- only and problem seems to be resolved. I have no idea, then again, it’s been a long day in the tech world, so not really thinking. Cheers!

  142. Andres Bolivar Says:

I think I found the answer though. Turn off your B. Only G. Maybe? Again. Long day.

  143. Andres Bolivar Says:

Nevermind. Sorry, y’all. So, I can’t reboot my phone, otherwise it completely jacks my wireless network. I have to unplug it. Resetting it doesn’t even do anything. Whatever. I have a Mac, Dell, Dell, two Airport Express stations, one iPhone 3GS with Remote that I use to control the speakers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  144. Gil Says:

I have the same problem. With 3.0 it didn’t even connected to wi-fi… but it could see the wi-fi network. Today I updated to 3.1 and it miraculous connected. Lasted like 2 minutes. Started to change between 1 and 3 bars and disconnected. HELP!!!

  145. Juan Says:

I have notice that my wireless N Netgear router doesn’t give my iPhone, MacBook Pro, my girl’s Dell Netbook or any other WiFi device a full signal. However, Wireless G router on my girlfriend’s house runs both of our iPhone 3Gs and other WiFi devices perfectly.

I think wireless G is the way to go for me and mine.

  146. Yoni Says:

My 3.0 worked for 2 weeks, since yesterday – doesnt show any wifi networks. even with more advanced apps like wifiTrack etc.

This iPhone is new – apple replaced it, and now it has this problem. Im scared to death that i have to replace it again. I dont live in the us and i have to send it there again.

do u think its hardware? before the problem rose i used the GPS for about an hour – and the iPhone did get a little warm (id say 40-45 celsuis), do u think it melted?

i tried the freezer thing, it worked for less than a second and doesnt work anymore.

    plz calm me down!

  147. Bob Says:

My ATT Uverse works just fine…perhaps withsome reduced signal. HOWEVER, since 3.0 was released I cannot connect to any Starbucks wifi (FOUR DIFFERENT LOCATIONS!). Call to iPhone support was that they had received a number of calls. 3.01 was all security related updates, but tried anyway. Still no connectivity to bucks wifi. It shows connected in the network settings, but the connecting wheel never stops.

  148. David Says:

we have 2 iphones – upgraded one of our phones to 3.0 – unable to see our wireless network at home. phone 2 has old o/s 2.2.1 – wireless network is up and running. same exact phones/network – version 3.0 creates a screen as if “wi-fi” is not at option at all.

  149. J.S. Says:

I was pretty happy for 6 months, I bought a wifi router just for the Iphone! I worked like a champ until 3.0! I noticed right away the wifi was acting weird and now it see’s the connection just fine until I go to use it then after about 15 second delay it switches to 3g! I’m pissed off at apple! I only updated because I want mms, I also love the way AT&T won’t let us use it! This will be my last apple product!

  150. Minh Says:

Hi Well I dont know why but my Ipod Touch 3.0 just recently lost its connection with my wi-fi I can use the internet with computers and stuff like that but it doesnt work with my ipod i can’t seem to connect it back with my Wi-Fi even if i type in the password it says”Unable to Connect With “NAME HERE”.”

  151. J.S. Says:

Update: I was getting ready to back up my phone for an exchange when I decided to try to connect to wifi one more time after 2 weeks without! I unplugged my router, then reset the network on the Iphone, phone restarts, then after about 2 min I plugged the router back in and everything works like it did before! Try it! I did multiple speed tests it works good again! I hope it lasts! So far connected solid for 2 hrs!

  152. JMT Says:

Thanks J.S.! I have been experiencing the same problems on my iTouch since 3.0,a nd your little trick just worked! I hope it sticks, but for now, it seems to be working. Thanks!

  153. Addertay Says:

    I have a 3GS and my wife has a 3G.

First noticed issues with my linksys 54g ( old first gen) and the router had been acting up in general so I tried a linksys wrt610n and my speed seems better.

My biggest issue is connecting to the iTunes store or app store by the iPhone. Both will give a cannot connect to store message randomly over wifi. If I turn off wifi and try again it’s ok ( for a while)

    Very weird. Hope 3.1 helps

  154. Fredrik Malm Says:

I have an iPhone 3G 16 GB that has been working fine since the OS 3.0 update until now. All of a sudden I lost the Wi-Fi connection and I can’t get it back. I have tried everything! The iPhone shows a Wi-Fi MAC-adress under Settings > General > About but it can’t find any networks? When searching for networks it spins for a second and then says that it can’t find any networks. I’ve tried to enter the network manually without luck. My network is unprotected with SSID broadcast turned on! Bluetooth works fine and doesn’t seem to have any impact on the problem. I’ve never experienced any issues before 3.0 A complete factory restore doesn’t solve the problem either : (

  155. gabi Says:

    I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM!!

settings>Wifi then on your home wifi(connection) tap the blue bottum on the right, then tap DNS and enter your routers IP.. find your router/modem IP on

PC Start>network then right click on your router>properties networkdevice just type the IP on Your Iphone/ipod touch

    This worked for me:)!

  156. Steve Says:

My 3g connected on my home wifi the day I brought it home, but since that day I have not been able to get connected to my home wireless router. I’ve even tried to join it direct by inputting Network name and PW….Still nothing…

Am I missing something with this, or ???? Thanks for any ideas.

  157. Nash Says:

gabi got it right!! Full power Wi-Fi from anywhere in my house, and with my cordless phones and bluetooth and microwave all functioning at the sam time. Bravo!

  158. Brian Says:

I have first gen phone and wireless always worked at home. It won’t even find my router anymore. Laptop connects to my router fine with a strong signal.

  159. cjBots Says:

Switching of Bluetooth definitely fixes the problem, but of course then no Bluetooth. Gabi’s sounds better, but I really can’t follow the instructions “home wifi(connection) tap the blue bottum on the right” huh? where? – it’s not at all clear where all these things are.

  160. BigKid Says:

Switching of Bluetooth doesn’t do anything – at least not for me. I never had it on and I do have most of the issues… Have a 3GS and a 3G. Both devices side by side: 3G is faster (regarding throuput) more stable, is able to stream videos when 3GS won’t and in some places the 3GS looses the wifi (or doesn’t find it) where the 3G does…

  161. BigKid Says:

    PS: BOTH devices run OS3.0

  162. Matt Says:

I have a 32gb 3gs. I have a belkin n1 router with 15 Meg Internet. Wifi takes forever to load any video bit places like starbucks I connect fine and fast.

  163. Aaron Says:

Same problem with the 3Gs running 3.01 as everyone else. My router is a linksys wireless G 2.4GHz. Just using 3G until there’s a fix. Please make it happen Apple!!!

  164. Anthony Says:

Same problem as everyone else here with my Iphone 3gs. My router is a speedstream. Wifi flucates. My son’s ipod touch (not updated) has a full strong signal. Help!

  165. Keith Says:

I have an IPHONE 3G and an IPHONE 3GS. My wireless router is a Linksys WGC200. The router has now probles commnunicating with devises connected using ethernet. but when MY 3G phone uses the wirelessnetwork, the phone losses the connection, and the router end up in limbo, causing a router reset. I replaced the router. It still happend, so I now suspect the phone is the issue. Aftyer reading the posts, I see it is the phone!!! Any feedback from apple?

  166. Michael Says:

I had the same problem on iPhone 3GS, 3.0 Jailbroken. Someone in a forum suggested not to use push email or set it to 15 min. I shut it off, restarted the phone and now it’s fine. For how long though….??

  167. Mark whittaker Says:

I’ve been having the same connection problems with my 3g iPhone and went into apple they said they no of no problem. Then went into 02 the same answer but they changed my network data settings then somebody else came in while I was there with the same problem. My iPhone is still not working properly it is better but then again it could not get much worst.

  168. fjafri Says:

I don’t if this applies to the 3G model as well but I have discovered what appears to be a very fundamental design flaw. Ever since I bought the 3GS I noticed that the signal strength fluctuated, frequently fluctuating between a full 5 bars and a 1 bar or nothing. I tried to find the answer to this problem on various forums with some weird explanations like attaching a USB cable or a scotch tape to the sim. Nothing I tried improved this. I noticed that it seems to drop just when you made a call and recovered immediately after the call.

This made me wonder if it had anything to do with how the phone was being held. Some users were saying that two identical units would report different signal strengths at the same location in the same network.

Anyway after a lot of experimenting I discovered that the iPhone 3GS appears to be extremely sensitive to being held on the lower 1/3rd part of the handset. Holding the phone in the top half recovers a full signal within a few seconds (15/20 secs)!!!!

You can try this yourself. Putting the phone down on the table or picking it ensuring the bottom half remains uncovered seems to work. Covering the bottom half starts to drop the signal.

The design flaw is that the receiving antenna should be placed at the top of the phone which is least likely to be covered when held. Either way it’s a flaw that Apple should recognize and fix. Other handhelds don’t seem to suffer from this characteristic.

  169. peadub Says:

I have the original iphone, and also have lost wi-fi. I tried gabi’s solution (aug 12 post) and while my phone does not show the wi-fi bars, it is acting as if it has wi-fi. For example, it used to be very difficult or impossible for me to download youtube videos over the EDGE system, but now I have no problem at all. Can someone explain this. I am on wi-fi or not?

  170. raugarci Says:

After spending all day with a similar problem “disconnecting wifi on my iphone 3G OS 3.0” I think I have a solution. Go to settings, wifi and delete (forget) all other wifi signals that may be interfering with your prefer wifi signal. It worked for me… good luck.

  171. Liam Says:

I was having similar problems with my Time capsule wifi on my iphone 3G since upgrading to 3.0. I have a 20mb cable solid download speed and my iphone always ranged 3-5mb download however after 3.0 I only reached 6-200 kb on wifi after the upgrade while on 3G with wifi off it was getting 2Mb download. My solution came from within the airport settings in the time capsule. In AIRPORT WIRELESS WIRELESS OPTIONS I ticked “Use interference robustness” I can only deduce that the 3.0 firmware is not as good at warding off those neighbouring networks that are growing day by day(I have 10 around me) not to mention bluetooth DECT phones etc.

  172. pacopass Says:

Hello All, I have researching this issue for a while; my wifi reception and my gps go together; when I first got my 3GS it worked fine; few days later the GPS reception went bad and simultaneously the wifi reception. I get wifi signal if I am less tan 10 feet away from my Apple router. I tried all kind of resets, reconfiguration, even firmware restore; nothing helped. When I gave up and forgot about it, the second day it worked like a charm; I got the wifi back and the GPS back. Now that I have been happy for another week using GPS and wifi, I woke up yesterday with no wifi; I jumped ou to check the GPS, the same problem is back; GPS locates me based on GSM antena triangulation with an error of few miles. My guess is the following: If it is a hardware issue, then the more I use my iphone wifi the worst it gets as I noticed the problem after a good day using wifi; I believe the GPS uses the same antenna and that one is getting tired. If it was a software issue, a full restore of the phone should have resolved the problem, or why the hell GPS stops when wifi stops? My post is not helping is finding a solution, but at least it gives another perspective of the problem.

Anyone out there is having simultaneous issues with wifi and GPS?

  173. littlejo Says:

Hi Pacopass, I agree. I was using my iphone 3g extensively before the i lost the ability to connect to wifi networks and get a GPS track on maps.

  174. k Says:

I am using linksys wireless G 2.4GHz and my 3GS works fine all the time. However, at my work, the wireless network connection works UNTIL it gets into sleep mode. Once it goes to sleep mode and comes back from it,wifi does not work at all – it loses connection to router.

  175. Daniel Says:

All of the above issues!!!! I had a 3g and never had a single wifi or network problem… Now I have a 3gs and all of the above issues… I even went to the apple store, got a new 3gs but same issues….

  176. Ryan Says:

I just replaced my phone (3GS) as well after trying seemingly everything else…nothing worked (including getting a replacement). FWIW, my original iPhone works just fine.

  177. Magdy Says:

I had same problem with my 3g os 3.01 , it started after upgrade from os 3.0 which was great , after one hour of upgrade it went out , I tried all ways stated in the net but no way , my case is not gray wifi , everything is normal but no wifi detection at all at home , work and everywhere , my question is is it hardware defect or software ?

  178. Thomas. Says:

I had the symtoms of fluctuating signal when sitting in front of my router and never getting a fast connection, all that seemingly after the last update. Tech support said System Reset which did nothing. I went to my router settings (linksys wrt310r) and changed it from using G and N to N only. After that BOOM, great steady signal and double the speed. Hope this helps!

  179. CTatay Says:

Here is something odd. Nothing but problems with my Linksys and wifi but if I use my mifi I have from Sprint using it’s wifi it works perfect. Why does it hate our home routers so much. I find it odd.

  180. Kzwack Says:

I have a D-Link DI-524 router and have finally fixed the connection to my iphone 3GS. I went into my router settings and turned off wireless security. On my iphone I went to my wireless network settings and picked “Forget this Network”. I then selected my network again and confirmed that a browsing connection was available. Once confirmed I went back into my router settings and turned WPA-TSK back on and set a password. The phone then asked for this password which I entered and it has all been good since.

  181. Solution Says:

This is the solution to the Iphone’s 3G’s that are having problem with the wifi connection.

    1. Do a factory restore and do not back up the iphone. after that do as a new phone not the old one.
    2. Install all the apps all over again even contacts. 3.DO not restore from any back up’s, because if you do all the setting that were on the previous iphone will be overwritten with the new setting so same problem occurs.
  182. Emad Daghreri Says:

Hi Since I upgraded to 3.1 i can not connect at all to my modem “THOMSON TG585″

  183. hypatia Says:

I have a 3g which stopped detecting or connecting to wireless networks (not just mine) after the ‘upgrade to 3.1.

I’ve tried to do a factory restore and not restore a backup – guess what? it still doesn’t work. So I have to set up the phone from scratch for nothing. Not impressed Apple. The ‘expert’ at apple services suggested turning off security on wireless networks. Ironically two more iphones were due to be bought within this household just as the ‘upgrade’ was released. Now both are going for Androids instead. Not that I imagine Apple give a monkey’s.

  184. Patrick Says:

I am having the same problem as everyone else. It all seemed to work until 3.1 came out.

Apple has just got to do something about this. It is maddening. I am now trying to daisy chain an older linksys router to my time capsule just for the iphones to run off of. Problem is now my computers and printers are all screwed up as none are working off the same network connection. Well tonight the battle will continue.

  185. Barry Says:

So I’m not the only one as Apple would like me to believe. My 3G has worked brilliantly for 6 months until upgrading(?) to 3.1 now WIFI is abysmal on both my home and office setup. Apple do not want to admit to there being a problem.

  186. brandon Says:

way to publish an article about a concern that doesn’t apply to you and that you give absolutely no advice for. ******* infuriating.

  187. Tony Says:

Just wanted to tell my experience. Which is as bad as (almost) everyone else’s. I have the 3G version and after installing 3.1 it started telling me the “incorrect password” thingy once a while. It’s driving me nuts! The password definitely is correct and it even allows me to use WiFi for a while until it decides to “forget” it and asks it again… And merry go round…

  188. ndemena Says:

My Iphone connection is off and on. One time I am connected, next time webpages would not load or emails would not download until I turn off the wifi and use the 3G connection. I have learnt that when my pages are not loading, it must be iphone cannot connect to my linksys wrvs4400n router. It is an iphone problem decause I have a laptop downstairs which never lost connection at any time. Could it be an encryption problem? Right now I used the wpa personal, may be a lower encryption.

  189. Fayeed Says:

I have a ntgear router… cant remember the model no., but it works excellent with my laptop even from 2 houses away… my iphone 3g however… seems to lower and then raise the wifi connection speed for some reason… the first time i used it the connection speed was great… i had it for about 2 weeks now and well this happens…

  190. Paul Says:

I have recently had a problem with my iphone, after installing the latest update wifi was removed as an option from my phone. After several attempts at resetting my phone and router I took it back to the shop I bought it from. They couldn’t get it to work work so now it’s on it’s way to Apple land. It had better come back in the same immacculate condition as I sent it in.

  191. Patty Says:

Like everyone I have same issue with no wifi or disconnects all the time after I upgrade to 3.0 and 2.2.1 works perfect, I just upgade my 2G iphone to 3.1.2 and fixs the problem.

  192. David Says:

I just bought a DLink DIR-825 and am running into the periodic “incorrect wifi password” problem. Sometimes it happens repeatedly within a few minutes. Other times will go for several minutes without a problem.

I’ve tried every available permutation of WPA, WPA2, AES and TKIP on the router. Nothing seems to help.

What has worked for me is to use WEP instead, or no encryption.

I can’t tell if this is an Apple problem or DLink problem. I did not have this problem with my old router, a D-Link DI-524.

  193. Mark sussman Says:

I have the same problem with flux in my bars. It is horrible and yea even right next to router. I’m supposed to have 6 MB from AT&T uverse running a cisco ipn4320

Please let me know because it thinking of canceling AT&T if this us it cuz this sucks

  194. Igor Bray Says:

I got my iPhone 3Gs three days ago. Wi-Fi shows a constant strong signal, but does not connect to the internet. I use Apple’s Airport Extreme base station with several macs working perfectly. All the Wi-Fi is listed and is correct.

Also, Bluetooth works for a while and then suddenly stops. I wasted heaps of time and am not happy.

  195. Joe Oberle Says:

Also having the same issue with 3g, I have a netgear rangemax router, I’ll add this as well, when my phone drops the signal, the signal drops off any laptop that is also connected to the wifi. It’s like the iphone is blocking the signals.

  196. Jonathan Says:

Ever since I upgraded to 3.1.2 my iphone 3g will not detect wifi. I’ve tried resetting the settings on my iphone but nothing will work. It’s brand new there shouldn’t be any problems with the iphone’s hardware.

  197. Spin2WinPA Says:

I started having problems after I upgraded to 3.1 or 3.1.2. iPhone 3G kept dropping my home network. All other devices are working fine. iPhone keeps prompting me for my password, then failing to connect.

When I removed the password (Netgear, WPA security), it would continuously connect and drop. I’d get an IP address for a few seconds, then it would disappear.

Bluetooth is working fine, and I can see my MAC address under network settings.

Have only noticed a problem on my home router (sitting right beside it). Will be trying on other public networks soon, but suspect it is the flaky signal strength problem.

  198. laumac816 Says:

Please help me…I don’t know what happened. My iphone 3G just suddenly won’t connect to the internet even if it recognizes my home wifi.(It used to work perfectly whever there’s wifi) I already brought it to Globe Telecom Center (official Philippine Iphone distributor), and it worked there just fine. I really am so frustrated, had the iphone for a year already, and I don’t know if some kind of warranty covers it. I’ve tried everything there is over the web to solve it, still efforts aren’t solving it.

  199. Susan Says:

I too am having this issue, starting today. Nothing has changed so can’t figure why this suddenly happened. I have a 3G that’s about 15 months old, all software is up to date. Network works fine for all our computers except for the 3G today. Now that I think of it, my husband’s 3Gs was doing this earlier in the week, again, out of the blue.

So, why doesn’t Apple have an answer for this if all of us have have this problem, and it appears to have started for some people in July?

  200. David Says:
