The Competition: Sony Ericsson Android UI

More big news for Android — and no, not just HTC finally going 3.5mm with the headphone jacks — but Sony Ericsson’s new “Rachel” Android device and it’s UI.

Hot on the heels of the HTC Hero’s Sense UI, it’s again showing the power and flexibility of Google’s other OS.

Is that model, separating hardware and software development, finally going to pay off in the mobile space? And, ironically, will it be Google rather than Microsoft who realizes it first?

Typo in first paragraph, should be ‘Sony’, not ‘Sonny’.

  2. Dmys Says:

Without any explanation/narratives this actually seemed a bit complicated. I’m sure actually playing with it would be easier but for the iPhone just looking at videos made me realize that the device was easy to use.

  3. Joe McG Says:

These new phones coming out (Rachel, HTC Hero, etc) look really nice. Apple better be shaking in their boots. The 3GS just wasn’t enough.

  4. Drake Says:

I actually like this. It does look a little confusing but I’m sure it wouldn’t take long to get the hang of it. Apple needs to throw in Twitter/Facebook integration into their contact cards. It would make things simple and fun!

  5. tweger01 Says:

Looks really cool, apple wouldn’t make something that cool though.

  6. jonathan Says:

This looks nice but kinda generic, like an OS thrown together for a tv show. The texts on squares, in small white fonts, in the stack view is not ideal.

Anway, just another Android phone. The OS is only so much, it’s about apps, itunes, everything. iPhone still wins.

  7. Kidlex Says:

I’m not sure all of my contacts have professionally lighted and photographed headshots that I can use to put them in my phone. It seems a little tacky to me, but I do like that feature for the artists.

  8. Desmond Says:

You guys are taking the words right out of my mouth. It just really seems to me is complacency. It’s great and all that Apple built a ground up OS for our phone, but honestly it’s not gonna be enough by this time next year. They are definitely going to have to integrate some things into this UI. Especially Facebook and Twitter in some sort of widgets configuration. This iPhone has just entirely too much free space that is not being used to make thing much more simpler. It has some fine points on it’s side but companies are really on their heels. This Andoid UI is looking interesting and I’m honestly paying attention to a few of these devices coming out. It has taken 3 years to implement core basic functionality. This time next year beware Apple. The things that make people ooooh and ahhhh about this phone are becoming a novelty. It needs flexibility touches like yesterday. Yeah it has an app for this and that but that’s the easy way out.

  9. shollomon Says:

If an Android phone can be:

    1) as thin or nearly as thin as an iPhone 2) be 95% as smooth and fluid and seamless in terms of interface/multi-touch stuff. 3) has excellent gmail integration. 4) browser is 95% as good as mobile safari.

I would head toward the open. I have not jailbroken my phone because I depend on it for work and need the warranty intact. Is stinks that I can’t load apps of my choice from vendors of my choice. It also stinks to be locked in to iTunes.

  10. Adam Says:

The day Sony actually makes a handset that operates that smoothly, I’ll be rolling over in my grave.

  11. LSC Says:

Wow, looks great but my concern is how it will actually run on the device.

As an iPhone owner, I’m glad other companies are finally catching up and adding some creativity to the industry.

It is hard to innovate when no one is pushing you.

Apple had better step up its game because the current UI, especially the way apps are handled (all on home screen, no categorization, no easy way to reorganize), is looking kinda old.

  12. The Reptile Says:

So we’re saying that Android is really cool because they can do Cover Flow? I surly wish Apple would come up with something like that because without it they’re screwed. Seriously, do you think that Apple will rest on their laurels while the rest of the world catches up. I’d be more worried if I’m RIM (old OS, dated products and can only BOGO for so long) or Palm (no share, few carriers, least capitalized of the groups). Android will make their mark this fall/winter but then what? It’s WinMo all over again. What’s the differentiation point? How do the Android phone makers achieve pricing power if everyone can has it and it can go on any device?

3.0 is essentially a platform release for Apple. It gets them to the place where they’ve checked off all of the things missing and allows them to go forward with tons of API’s for the things that they want to do next. Remember, last time people doubted Apple they came out with the original iPhone. And speculation back then was that it would look like an iPod with a keypad for dialing numbers. Imagine if we all got what we wanted back then. No thanks. I’ll wait for Apple to bring out what Apple wants instead.

  13. Mike Says:

Hey Rene” can you find out why can’t I copy a picture and paste it in a link bar to uplode it on sites like Twitter where you can have face pics.Or touch on the Browse button and get a picture out of you picture gallary to upload the pic” I’m happy with my 3.0 softwear on my 3G but thats the only feature I would love to have. Apple is always slacking on features” you think you have something but you don’t.

    Please find out for me…..Thanks”

  14. jstrickland Says:

I agree that Apple will need to step up it’s game. I also have no doubts that Apple will, indeed, step up it’s game. As for the video, it was a little too polished. For a while I thought the contacts being displayed were simply albums from artists I had never heard from. The OS does initially look pretty, but there is simply not enough in the video to indicate whether or not it will stack up to the iPhone OS or Palm Pre WebOS.

  15. iDutch Says:

Looks really nice and all, but can anyone pick up the phone and know what to do? I don’t think so. with the iPhone the the UI is in my opinion both nice and easy to use. I mean a 3 year old can figure out what to do with the device in 10 minutes, it’s so easy to use.

  16. Truth Says:

If anyone thinks that Iphone OS 3.0 (or 3.1) is still a great UI in 2009 they better get a reality check. Yes, Apple led the way back in 2007 with it’s revolutionary touch screen design, Ipod integration, and App Store but the times are changing. The other mobile OS are getting better, faster, and more tightly integrated with the “cloud” while Apple pushes out it’s marginal updates that seem to be outdated the day they come out (or even before that…copy and paste I’m looking at you).

There is nothing worst than releasing a highly popular product only to have it stagnate. Let’s look at it for what it is: OS 3.0 is still lacking, and the 3gs is not a real upgrade because going back to the software thing it is not being used to it’s full potential (are they saving this for gaming-I hope not?) Now does this mean that they are going to hurt their sales? No probably not, but it honestly isn’t a good thing for any of us when Apple doesn’t give us 110% and really push the innovation envelope.

Anyway I’m really hoping more people start trying out Android based products. An open platform is good for everyone. Apple still hasn’t given us a real myPhone.

  17. Truth Says:

    @ Desmond

Too bad most of the Apps are just plain **** and you can only open one at a time. And Push Notifications is easily the biggest joke of the year.

  18. Joe McG Says:

I dumped Nokia in 2007, dumped Blackberry in 2008, and will dump Apple for another phone if somebody comes out with one better.

I don’t understand fanboy-ism. I just want the best. At this point, my Apple is starting to brown a little bit . . .

  19. Truth Says:

    @ Joe McG

I completely agree. Why people act like only Apple can make a great phone is beyond me.

  20. Desmond Says:

@ Truth your right brother! When the right Android device comes out and we are still debating this silly stuff and there isn’t any progress it’s a wrap for me. iPod Touch this will become I’m sorry. ATT will allow them to do anything they want. What sucks at this time also is that I believe Apple applies pressure to them with not allowing direct competition with other devices on ATT. It’s as if they’re scared. At least across the pond they can really use what’s under the hood in the 3GS they have the network. Here it’s like having a Corvette with no gas. Maybe it’s just me I don’t know.

  21. Rene Ritchie Says:

@Truth: iPhone still has the best UI in the smartphone space, bar none. Even by 2009, no one has come close to catching up, though some have more sizzle (TouchFlo weather) and some more function (webOS notifications), none are yet as consistent, instinctive, or usable.

iPhone sales bear that out :)

  22. scottb Says:

@ joe (and others) You go ahead and dump the iPhone ’cause it hasn’t updated to an eye-candy interface. In the meantime, I’ll take my sorry-*ss old 3G and keep using the best app store, music store, and compatibility with Exchange. You guys kill me. Apple doesn’t re-invent the wheel every 12 months so you start this typical ****. Then, for those of us not agreeing, we’re “fanboys” Get a grip. Or a life!

  23. stooovie Says:

Anyone can create eye-popping interface. The problem is, what appeals to one person is revolting for another. I would go nuts with this flowing, wildly animated, colourful UI. Apple`s strenght is in perfect balance between looks and function. It appeals to (almost) everyone.

  24. scottb Says:

@ Stoovie: Exactly. Try using that while in a car (as a passenger) or other busy environment. It would make people nauseous. Apple can and WILL improve the iPhone. They don’t sit and wait while others release new things. Part of the reason we’re in the toilet as a society is the need to have everything new every few months. It’s getting ridiculous.

  25. AgBand Says:

    @ scottb:

I disagree. Apple does sit and wait. That is why, in 2009, we are just getting some of these great features like MMS and Copy and Paste. Make no mistake, I am excited about that, but the fact is that while others are playing catch up with Apple in some aspects, Apple is still playing catch in other areas. Apple will continue to release half-*** updates until they are actually challenged(which could be some time), and then we can see how far Apple is willing to go. At some point, the people are going to get fed up and find something better if/when a better option is presented.

  26. Rene Ritchie Says:

Terminal/Command-line hasn’t been updated — really — in decades because it works to such a degree that useless changes would hurt functionality.

Apple only needs to change the iPhone UI if those changes make it better, no if it just appeals to fashionistas.

  27. Truth Says:

    @ Rene Ritchie

You’re an absolute fool. The Iphone does not have the best UI.It may currently have the best user experience: Apps, easy UI, support, Itunes, Ipod integration but it does not have the best UI.

    Why doesn’t it?

Ask yourself what is the function of the lockscreen? To tell you the time in huge font and let you slide a button to unlock it? (yeah that was cool in 2007 but not anymore)

    • Point is it doesn’t do anything is pretty much pointless. Why can’t you just unlock on the homescreen? Why can’t the lockscreen show you information about appointments, weather, emails, text, stock info, etc?

    • Why does the spotlight feature need an entire page just so you can search for an app? Why doesn’t it show recently used apps or most used apps.

    • Why does the user have to tediously organize their apps on unmarked pages just so they can sort games, media, and other apps? What do you do if you have over 100 apps. Oh that’s either right swipe to the spotlight page or hit the mag glass and then TYPE THE NAME OF THE APP AGAIN!

    • Why do you need to have a bunch of pages for every app? Why not a quick app/ most used apps list and a function to view other apps? Why are the apps not the pages themselves (see WebOS).

    • How come when you get a push notification you have to exit the current app and go to the other app that the notification came from just to respond or whatever. WHat if you get a bunch of notifications at the same time. Then what?

    • How come when you receive a text message in an App you have to exit the app then go to the SMS app just to reply

    • How come in Safari if you are browsing the web you have a function to quick scroll to the top but nothing for in between or straight to the bottom? You ever tried scrolling to the bottom of the comments page on the Iphone? It sucks.

    • How come just to change the brightness and or turn off 3g and bluetooth you have to exit an app then go to the settings app then toggle it off. Why can’t you do a gesture and bring up the settings menu or have a quick shortcut on everypage with a link to a pop up toggle menu (think an evolved SBsettings)?

-How come it took 3 generations of Iphones just to get copy and paste?

    • How come we still don’t have flash support even though Safari is supposedly the best mobile browser?

-Is the contacts app not redundant? Why is it there if it is integrated in the Phone app?

I could go on. There are a number of inconsistences and antediluvian features that make the Iphone seem outdated in 2009. Like I said before it may have the best “current” user experience but it does not have the best UI.

  28. iDutch Says:

@truth: In your opinion, who (currently) has the best User Interface?

  29. Joe McG Says:

    @Scottb

Thanks for the name-calling. That really adds to the conversation. That’s what makes you a fanboy.

I believe the iPhone is the best right now; a Jailbroken iPhone that is. That’s why I have it. But I believe Apple is complacent and not doing much to improve it.

However, this HTC Hero coming out looks really sweet. I won’t know for sure until I get one in my hands though.

  30. Mephisto Says:

    @Truth:

So tell us, what UI does everything?

Symbian? No WinMo? No Android? No

Whichever UI you look at it’s lacking features. Sure the iPhone UI isn’t perfect, but having used all the others it’s the one I’d come back.

  31. Joe McG Says:

@ Truth Good, but obvious points, but I know the fanboys are steaming mad right now. You should change your name to “Truth Hurts”

  32. Truth Says:

    @Mephisto

It has nothing to do with what UI does everything and everything to do with missing features that probablw won’t appear until OS 10.0.

Rene said OS 3.0 is superior to other UIs when in reality it is no better than the high end feature phones. Yes, it sales like hotcakes but that has more to do with brand recognition then its UI. Apple could have put a scroll wheel on the iphone and it would still sell millions.

Now if if OS 3.0 is the best thing they could do in terms of ui then they simply quit trying. I listed several improvements that could change how you use an iphone for the better but will we see them? Maybe on the Iphone 6.

  33. Desmond Says:

School them Truth please. This is crazy that they don’t see this.

  34. Truth Says:

    @ iDutch

Right now I would say Sense UI/Android but since I haven’t tested it and only seen vids I will say WebOS is better than OS 3.0. Now I don’t think the Pre is a better phone than the iPhone but WebOS UI is better than OS 3.0. Now when the HTC Hero launches I believe it will have the best UI and hardware combo.

In the end though I think Andoid has the most potential for the development of mobile UIs.

  35. Desmond Says:

I will bet money by 4.0 they will still be incoporating more iTunes implements for your money. Phone enhancements are secondary. Truth has shown you the obvious. Can we get atleast half that in one year? It’s ridiculous that it will take that amount of time but I will say a year or two before I say less than a year.

  36. Ghop Says:

I love my 3gs, I have had all three generations of the phone, bought each one on launch day. With all of that said, I have to agree with @Truth about some of the things he has commented on. The UI feels a little out dated now. Maybe I have come to expect more from Apple when I shouldn’t. Heck, give me an option to add different themes and I will be happy (for a while anyway). Even though I feel that UI is out dated, I am not ready to give up my 3GS. The phone has so much to offer. I am locked into the whole Apple echsystem (2 phones, MacBook pro, airport extreme, iTunes, AppleTv), and what an echosystem it is, there isn’t one better out there.

  37. Truth Says:

    @ Ghop

I agree with you. I am not ready to give up my jailbroken Iphone 3g. I have so many enhancements its crazy. JBing has really extended the iphone quite beautifully. Had I not found out about it I would have bought a feature phone like the Eternity or Impression which do everything (accept GPS) that my Iphone does with the cheaper data plan. But when I see another device that makes my mobile experience easier and more seamless with my other experiences I will quickly let go of my Iphone 3g and never look back.

  38. Ghop Says:

    @ truth

I have to say, the HTC HERO is looking very nice. It’s the only phone that has caught my attention so far. The draw back for me is, if I can’t sync to my Mac Via iTunes, then I don’t see the point. ALL of my music and videos have been purchased from iTunes, I can up load movies to my phone with ease. Being able to purchase music and now videos over my phone is a +. I am with you though the UI needs an overhaul. The best thing Apple has going for them is it’s echosystem. If they didn’t have that, then the iPhone would not have as much consumer penetration that it has. There are so many things Apple could do to enhance it’s UI appearence and they could do it all with an update. I am hoping they do before the next gen. They are wiiling to add silly things like vibrate when shifting or deleting apps, for real, who the he’ll needs that. I feel the UI is so outdated, that I have considered jailbreaking, something I have been dead against in the past.

  39. Joe McG Says:

Just from the tone of these posts I can tell people are growing tired of Apples bull.

  40. Ana Says:

    wow, that’s gorgeous

  41. Mystic Says:

So much astrotufing and trolling going on here these days. Sigh. I’m not going to name names, but I think we all know who they are.

  42. Dexter Says:

It seems as if YourTruth has struck again! Way to go, MisguidedTruth, you sure have stirred the water, especially with hurling insults at Rene. So, UnTruth, does your ranting make you feel like a big man because you’ve shared your laundry list of personal issues with the iPhone that many others don’t have or don’t even realize what’s supposedly “missing” from it? Do you have any more vitriol to spew, TruthAskew?

  43. Truth Says:

    @ Mystic

Since when did criticizing Apple and pointing out it’s flaws been considered trolling. This post talks about the competition. Rene said the Iphone still had the best UI. As a Iphone user I countered his statement with well supported and documented points. When Apple deserves praise I will give it to them but but they haven’t done anything since 2007-2008. I remember them saying nobody need copy and paste or MMS. Yeah okay!!!

@Dexter you are about as fanboy as they come. That “laundry list” isn’t just from my personal knacks against the OS but from many people. Those same people who cried and cried about no MMS, and copy and paste– yeah I was one of them. Where you one of those who said how dare we ask our lord and savior Apple for anything else?

  44. SpiceRak2 Says:

I guess it boils down to “What have you done for me, lately (Apple)?”

Have you noticed that the criticism of technology, no matter how new, untested, and experimental has become much more unforgiving? It’s tough to hear some of the negativity but at the same time, that critical voice from the public will serve to push companies like Apple to only strive for breaking barriers.

The iPhone continues to astound, continues to be the benchmark, and yet…knowing the potential, it still falls short in some areas. Well, there is no perfect phone, but it seems obvious that the public wants better and wants it now.

I must admit that some of the “magic” of the iPhone has begun to fade for me. I am still willing to stay with Apple’s inventions, but it is getting harder to refute some of the points being made regarding the iPhone’s limitations.

The question remains: Is Apple listening? My guess: YES. After 3.0 and the 3G[s], there were just as many critics as fans. This latest release was decidedly different than previous ones and I don’t think Apple nor Steve Jobs wants to endure that again. (Remember the reaction at WWDC2009 from the crowd at certain points…)

One of my biggest concerns with product development at Cupertino is that the focus will be gaming/media. I just want Apple to remember that the iPhone should be a communication tool, first and foremost, IMHO.

  45. ches Says:

And Ericsson is spelled with a double s, not a double c.

  46. Mystic Says:

    @Truth

Nothing wrong with legitimate criticism, but your relentless trolling and the personal insults you have hurled at René and others on this blog (calling them liars and fools) have gone way beyond that.

If the iPhone doesn’t meet your needs, go and buy something else that does and move on.

But, that’s not why you’re here, is it? I’ve been around the block a few times can smell astroturfing, trolling and FUD a mile away. And it reeks to high heaven around here, at the moment.

  47. Visi Says:

I have iphone 3gs but the htc hero caught my attention. So anyone want iphone 3gs unlocked for 650$?!

  48. iPhoneMilk Says:

Nothing to see here folks. He’s just pretty much an idiot.

Troll why don’t you go buy one of those other “better” phones, have fun. Enjoy

/goes back to playing his iPhone games.

  49. Truth Says:

    @Mystic

No the Iphone doesn’t meet my needs that is why I jailbroke it. I would never buy it if I couldn’t jailbreak.

  50. Mephisto Says:

    @Desmond:
I will bet money by 4.0 they will still be incoporating more iTunes implements for your money. Phone enhancements are secondary.
Excellent, that’s all I want, for me the iPhone is a music player with enhancements, nothing more, and that’s what I bought it for.

I wanted a music player that did gapless playback, no other phone I’ve owned (and that’s a lot) has done that, even Nokia’s touted “Music Phone” the 5800, what a joke.

I believe the N97 doesn’t, and I know the Android OS doesn’t either.

It also has the added advantange of being a phone, calendar, games machine, GPS device, internet browser, etc.

They are additional extras to me, as long as it plays music and plays it well then that’s good enough for me. However “Compilations” grouping would be nice… ;-)

  51. Joe McG Says:

    @iPhone Milk

Please read post #27. While I don’t agree with calling Rene a “fool”, everything else in that post is accurate. I don’t agree that Truth is a “troll” because he is stating real shortcomings of the iPhone, even though we could all do without the name calling. A troll would be somebody who posts garbage like “Who cares, the iPhone sucks anyway, get a blackberry” etc.

With that said, I am getting tired of the beatings Rene takes on these comments sections sometimes. I think he’s doing a great job of reporting iPhone news and rumors w/ just enough bias.

  52. iDavey Says:

To people saying it won’t run smoothly…one word: Snapdragon.

To the poster who said seamless Gmail integration: Have you been living under a rock. It’s Android. Google. Duh.

I love the design, UI, and power being packed into this (lets just hope it has the RAM to supplement it).

If this gets pushed out…it will truly be the first Android device that can compete graphically with the iPhone (beyond the Hero and Sense). And it will be the ONLY Android device to not only compete…but crush the iPhone in raw power and speed.

  53. Truth Says:

I apologize Rene Ritchie. I was just being passionate about my feelings toward the Iphone. I had no right to call you a fool. Don’t get me wrong I love the device but Apple in my opinion has quit trying to be the innovator and has pulled a “Nintendo” by continuing with minimal upgrades and many useless features at the expense of features that could really improve our (yes all of us) user experience.

  54. SpiceRak2 Says:

    @ Truth:

“I apologize Rene Ritchie. I was just being passionate about my feelings toward the Iphone. I had no right to call you a fool.”

    Well done.

  55. David Says:

    @mephisto

you KNOW android doesn’t have gap less playback of music? I can only assume you haven’t actually used one … even the slower (sometimes painfully slow due to multitasking) G1 plays music perfectly in the background through hours of tracks while texting, using gmail or exchange, twitter, web browsing and any other app installed. Keep in mind this is all at the same time without any data loss, reloading of web pages or even having to close a single app.

To all those not liking the UI, try using android for a week. Here are some tips …

    • it’s confusing: What you see on the screen are widgets, something no one else has. This means instant access to all app information and push data. They are meant for a quick glance, but if you need to actually search through a huge contact list, email list etc you simply switch to the real app and get the benefits open source offers.

    • it will be slow: read what has been mentioned, snapdragon cpu. The G1 is only slightly slower than the iphone, although more reliable. Snapdragon is twice as fast and it will handle anything android can throw at it.

    • cost: you’re probably right. I expect this to be subsidized to the tune of probably around 300, but certainly far more expensive than the iphone.

    • benefit not mentioned here: sdcard. iPhone users pay another 100 to get another 8/16G of storage. Card storage offers huge flexibility up to a current 32gig for far less. This is not android specific of course, just a personal/professional reason for the iPhone being inadequate.

    • apple will listen: really? I’ll hold back from how I feel about that given the response to Truth, but look at history … no they don’t and won’t. On the iPhone (even jailbroken to a certain extent) you get to do what Apple says, when Apple says, how Apple says. Thats called Jobs Law (read: original mac, NeXT, imac, etc).

    • business use: Yes, google took a hit on this and made a bad call not using its ActiveSync license, but their intent in leaving it open source is to have other companies write better apps for certain functions. I use one called touchdown and it is FAR superior to the iphone.

    • Games: in my opinion Apple currently has android nailed and knocked out. While there are some cool games for android, Apple clearly spent a lot more time focusing on this.

    • Home page UI: Mr Jobs, I respectfully request that you take your “no catagory no folder random placement difficult to use flat and effectively useless” home page design and please find something creative and preferably very uncomfortable to do with it. It’s terrible.

    • Multitasking: No detail really needed here. Apple pulled an epic fail on this one and has no intention of resolving the problem.

    • Another unmentioned topic: the exclusive contract with AT&T is great for AT&T … and thats about where the compliments stop. Nothing more to say there, but my suggestion would be to find a hot spot … any hotspot to get off of AT&T’s 3G network. Starbucks is a nice place and iPhone’s get free access there now.

To all of the iPhone fans (read: NOT fanboy, i don’t mean that) I understand the reliance on the iphone, I really do. I had the first two generations and I enjoyed them, but at some point I need a phone that lets me work AND play and I want to do it seamlessly. iTunes is a good system for what it does, but not if you want more. I don’t like the DRM and I don’t want to pay extra to remove the DRM. I SURE don’t want to scrap all that music to go to android, but luckily I don’t use itunes (which brings up another point, the backup/restore function in iTunes … well done Apple, I do hope someone copies that idea and will make this easier on android). I don’t think anyone on either side of the fence is a fool or blind or lying, but I do think anyone who makes blanket statements without REALLY knowing how the system works is, well, unexperienced.

  56. Gobucks Says:

What iPhone firmware 4.0 needs to do: - use palms webos card multitasking - allow app icons to be live widgets e.g. Weather - keep the bottom dock but use osx style spaces to have different screens with sets of apps and widgets e.g. A games screen - allow user wall paper. I don’t understand why this is such a problem for apple.

Other wise android and webos will be very tempting when my contract is up for renewal.
