Dev Team Pro Tips for iPhone Unlockers

It was just this past Thursday that the Dev Team updated their software unlock, ultrasn0w, to version .09. While this update seems to have eliminated most of the issues some users were experiencing, the Dev Team have been nice enough to post some pro tips for unlocking your iPhone 3G/3GS with ultrasn0w .09. The following are just a few:
- Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you. This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time. Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings. Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.
- T-Mobile in the USA doesn’t use the 3G frequencies that the iPhones support, so turn off 3G in Settings->General->Network. (Some T-Mobile territories gracefully hand down to Edge mode, but most do not).
So there you have it folks, two very important tips for the unlockers of the world. We here at TiPb can not stress exactly how important that first tip really is to “Setup as new iPhone” within iTunes while restoring your device. Not doing so can and will create issues for you somewhere along the way.

Sweet! That may be the answer for me. I have been restoring without setting it up as a new phone. Thanks!

I don’t understand why Microsoft gets slammed repeatedly for software problems but Apple gets a free pass on things like this. There are alot of iPhone users out there who aren’t tech savvy and don’t know anything other than what iTunes tells them (think of our parents, grandparents, etc). I’m sure they are walking around with a phone charger in their pocket because their iPhone kills the battery immediately.
Even MORE ridiculous is the fact that this known problem hasn’t been addressed by Apple at all via a software update.
I’m not a Microsoft fan, or an Apple hater at all. I am just pointing out THIS particular problem. I have been thinking about taking the plunge and getting a Macbook because of all the good things I hear, but am starting to see Apple as slow and unresponsive to issues. Can somebody tell me if it is this bad with their computers?

@Joe You are judging apple because they haven’t “fixed” a problem that is caused by people improperly jailbreaking their device? That is a bit ridiculous.

@Ryan
Nope. Battery issue is a 3.0 problem. Nothing to do with jailbreaking. Do a search for iPhone 3.0 battery issues and take a look.
Thanks for playing

@Ryan it isn’t caused by jailbreaking, it’s caused by updating to 3.0. That said, it isn’t happening to very many people. I’m sure it’s something Apple will address, but it’s still only happening to a small group comparatively.

@Joe, it is not 3.0 related at all. It’s a updating issue. Plain and simple and to solve the issue is to restore as a new iPhone. This has been an issue since 2.0.

This battery issue is a thorn in my side. You shouldn’t have to keep restoring your device as new. There is a battery issue. This phone needs a bigger battery period. Case in point I went to the Apple store to get some other issue dealt with and they replaced the phone but it wasn’t updated to 3.0. I asked why and the tech said they have been having battery management issues on 3.0. He said that I should keep it 2.2.1 until the next update. Houston there is a problem some of you guys really need to stop justifying this ****. They had six months to work these kinks out.

@Jeremy Sikora
That just proves my point even further. The “updating” issue has been a problem for over a year and nothing has been done.
Do you really think the “average” iPhone user checks sites like TiPB everyday to get the latest ways to fix iPhone bugs/problems? I think not. My mother-in-law has an iPhone and doesn’t even know how to change the ringtone. She just does whatever iTunes tells her.

…could this battery issue just be a consequence perhaps more unique to iPhone users. For once there is a phone that consumers love to use…alot! More Internet time, more email, more time listening to music, more watching movies, more Youtube, more gaming time, more texting time, etc. If I use my iPhone for just phone calls and light Internet use, I have no problem getting through the day with about 40% battery left at bedtime. If I play games, watch music videos, listen to music, check out Youtube, make a few tweets, read news on CNN, take a few pictures, make a couple of short videos (3GS), send some emails, and listen to music again, sure I’m about down to 10% or completely down by the late evening. I usually turn off WiFi, and keep the screen brightness down to a minimal but usable level for maximizing battery life. Sure I would love a battery that lasted for days but, given the occasional heavy use, the battery life is not bad. I love my iPhone and use it 300% more that I ever used any cell phone before. Just as a convenience, I have a USB cable for charging at work, a car charger, and a charger at home. I usually only charge my phone overnight, but, if I know I need an extra boost somewhere, I’m covered.

@JAG
I agree partially with your assessment…

Just remember: If you testore, setting it up as a new phone, you will lose your contacts. At least thats what happened to me… Luckly i had saved my contacts by SSHing into the iphone.

Hi Folks, quick question. I originally jailbroke with redsn0w-win_0.7.1 and Vista Ultimate box.
I have not had any issues. Is there any advantage to using the latest .9 version over what I have? ie. am I missing out on something?

ya I agree the battery issues with 3.0 are not good, I hope they improve next firmware

I have been having erratic wifi connection problems on my home network where my 3G and first gen iPod touch get a perfect signal. I am thinking this may be a solution to my problem ( as in set up as a new phone !) Guess I will loose all data in my games and checkbook apps though !

Hey folks. I followed the jailbreak instructions to a t, but when redsn0w tried to reboot my iphone it just froze up and was stuck in the waiting for reboot stage. If this is doing this for you just unplug the iphone from your computer and then plug it in again while that redsn0w screen is open. it should start to reboot then. Worked for me!
