iPhone 3.1 Beta 3: Data Tethering Counter [-- Add AT&T Rumor Here!]
WhenWillApple has found another new goodie in the just released iPhone 3.1 Beta 3: Settings > General > Usage now shows Tethering Data alongside the previous Cellular Network Data counter.
Since countries outside the US, and carriers other than AT&T have offered tethering pretty much since the launch of iPhone 3.0, does this new addition, alongside the return of MMS settings in iPhone 3.1 Beta 1 released a month ago, hint that AT&T might finally be getting their iPhone offerings in order?
Insert your AT&T tethering rumor here!

I just wish AT&T would improve thier network. I’m riding down the interstate right now and browsing on a scattered edge network is frustrating. I couldn’t imagine tethering.

I wonder if its going to be even remotely correct? The “cellular network data” section is no where near accurate!

I enjoy/prefer PDAnet…sorry At$T besides this can’t make the final update because I dont want TetherN from AT&T…shouldn’t this feat be a choice added @ the store anyway?

forget “it’s own”, let’s talk about how it’s counting the data PERIOD. Like I download 1.1Gbs of a torrent via my iPhone’s 3G connection, and it doesn’t show it at all in my network data received. Wtf??

I’ve been tethering for almost 2 months now….

MuRdA4freE, are you unlocked or have you found another way to tether? forgive me… im not much of a blogger or a techie….

I think that AT&T asked apple to kill tethering and they said that they wouldn’t spend the extra man hours for nothing after AT&T embarrassed Apple enough during WWDC 2009 when Scott Forestall was desperately trying to keep a straight face when first saying AT&T MMS would be available later in the summer and then completely ignored it saying “Tethering will be available with blah carriers in blah countries.” AT&T not being on the list.
I think AT&T has finally gotten off their lazy asses and given them a date or a timeframe to when MMS AND Tethering will be ready with data plans and such and Apple will introduce this when they do their autumn iPod refresh. That is why MMS has been re-enabled (in the OS not on AT&T’s network) and they have those extra line items for Tethering.
Hey, who knows, maybe it’ll be free. (Yeah right)
This is all speculation of course

This is one of the features for people using a limited bundled data plan.
Hope to hear iPhone 3.1 soon…

@ksanders Activating tethering on your iphone is simple. You don’t have to be unlocked or even jailbroken. Check out how on Cnet. It’s simple. Go here.

Adding to my previous post. This will no doubt be disabled when the official 3.1 is released but for now it works great.

When I bought my iPhone 4 months ago, I asked the sales person if the iPhone did tethering like my AT&T Tilt. He said that AT&T did not support tethering on the iPhone, but in the near future they would. He also said AT&T was going to have a tethering plan for an additional $35 a month on top of the $30 for iPhone data. He said the tethering plan would give you 5GB data transfer a month of tethering and so much for every MB there after.
Really, I don’t know what the big difference if I am browsing a webpage from my phone or from my computer, besides AT&T laughing all the way to the bank.

I’ve been using tethering on my iphone through AT&T for a month now. If AT&T try to charge me for a service they don’t offer then it would be a nice way to get out of their overprice service contract. I mean, At&T is expensive and to believe I cant even get MMS is sad. Even when I was with pathetic nextel if someone send me a picture on my phone I get it instantly. And why pay for tethering when we already have an unlimited data plan.

Oh, I haven’t updated to 3.01 or 3.1. The security flaw doesn’t apply to us because we don’t even have mms
