Quick App Update: Qik for iPhone… Removes Wi-Fi Restriction?!

Qik [Free - iTunes link] update… removes Wi-Fi-only restriction?! That’s what Jeremy saw when he checked his updates!
For those unfamiliar with Qik, it lets you stream live video over the internet, and archive it via Qik.com. I’ve been playing with the beta for a while.)
Sound off in the comments!

God only knows, A better and more usefull description would be appreciated!

It’s just an update for it’s own app. It takes the wi fi restriction off for the app itself, not for all apps(

:O Oh goodness! AT&T is letting them??? This IS a sign of the apocalypse. What’s next MMS and Tethering?!

But the live stream isn’t working on the Apple store version, right?
August 21st, 2009 at 6:49 pm
For those of you too lazy to do a search, Qik is an app that lets you have a live video stream on their website.

qik service is free and allows you to stream a video live on the internet using your cell phone. i have been using it on my jailbroken iphone and works great. For my understanding the app for not jailbroken iphones won’t allow live streaming. Maybe with the new update it will. let’s see, you guys are better off jailbreaking regardless. More tools and less money to spend or donate to apple. Yes i would love mms to arrive soon too!!!

Install 3Gunrestrictor ($2) from Cydia Store to remove WiFi restrictions from any app you want. This app is awesome!

That’s something interesting! So I guess Apple & ATT allow some apps to bypass the “wi-fi only” restriction? Not fair! Other, better apps deserve the same freedom! Aaaah!

I can use Qik on my iPhone 3g through Cydia. Why can’t there be a Qik version for 3g and not 3gs only through the app store?
August 21st, 2009 at 8:12 pm
@Rob Terry:
Because the App Store is for a non-jailbroken OS, and a non-jailbroken 3G doesn’t have video capabilities.

I believe AT&T TOS refer specifically to redirecting TV, perhaps due to bandwidth. Qik doesn’t redirect TV or use VoIP, so it’s likely closer to the built-in YouTube app, which can access 3G.

@Rene
Then how does MLB At Bat allow streaming over all flavors of cell network? It shows the local broadcast of every game, in other words, it’s explicitly “redirecting TV”.
August 21st, 2009 at 9:16 pm
@Jason I bet ATT is partnered with MLB in some way or they’re getting large sums of money…

Qik use scenario #1:
imagine you are sick and ur buddy has a jailbroken iphone with Qik from Cydia. s/he can stream a lecture to you LIVE while you are at home sick watching the lecture on ur browser. There is a video record of it on the Qik website at the end of the stream.
Now do you see some potential uses of it come September? Now go out there, jailbreak your phone, install the non-neutered Qik and enjoy life without giving Apple a second thought.
ur welcome

It’s probably because this app would primarily only effect the upload speed on network which is less than download.
August 22nd, 2009 at 12:49 am
has anyone figured out how to make videos PRIVATE before they are uploaded to qik?????

take a vid with u iPhone using the app store QIK. Wouldn’t it b nice to b able to view it on u iPhone? This is lame. U, or anyone else, cannot view u QIK vid on an iPhone browser. This is not true of the JB ver of QIK. Have the QIK people basterdized thei vid file format so the iPhone browser will not render?

I have an iPhone 3GS with Qik installed. I can record and upload videos to my Qik profile, but live streaming does not work at all – either over WIFI or 3G.

I’m about to start live streaming and I want to figure out the best portable hardware setup. Will Qik or Stickam work with jailbroken iphone 3g or do i need a netbook?
