iPhone 3.1 Bugs: Got Random Freeze or Shut Down?

iphone_reboot

Post one bug, and everyone demands you post another even more frustrating one. Our bad, should have had this up already. Seems iPhone 3.1 users, mostly iPhone 3G users from what we can make out, are experiencing random freezes and complete shutdowns of their iPhones, and nothing, not reboots, not restores are fixing it.

TiPb did hear a few accounts of freezes during the 3.1 beta on all versions of the iPhone, but that’s the point of betas — to identify and fix bugs before the software goes primetime.

Seemingly random, intermittent bugs, however, can be some of the toughest to figure out, especially for users, so if you’re suffering from randomly freezing or shutting-down iPhones, let us know which device, and any pertinent details like clean 3.1 install, restore from backup, etc. and if you’ve stumbled onto any fixes of the more-than-temporary variety, please do share.

  1. Kris Says:

this has happened to me several times over the last week or so. hoping for a fix soon.

  2. Dave Says:

Been experiencing this since 3.1 also. Went to Apple store today and they had me do a restore and clean renew. Still having the same issue.

  3. Clay C Says:

Yeah this has happened to me quite a bit since I upgraded to 3.1 version. I have an iphone 3G.

  4. David Says:

This is happening about three times a day now at random. On the last freeze my phone beeped with new mail while in standby but I could not wake it up. I then called my phone from a land line and it it would just ring on the receavrr but no response from the iPhone. I called apple this morning and they toldme to restore which I have alreAdy done. Speaking with apple so far they have not reconized this as a bug

  5. Jerry Kidd Says:

I have the 3G. Upon upgrade to OS 3.1 battery life (which was never great) took a huf=ge turn for the worse. You could almost watch the indicator go down. Recharging really did not work. In fact the phone got hot during the process.

I tried a backup and reset to factory via iTunes. Then I restored the backup. Same problem.

So, I restored to factory and reinstalled all 120 apps by hand. No more battery issues. In fact, battery life was never this good…unless it is hunting for 3G si signal…then it rapidly goes down.

Today I experienced a totally random shut down while attempting to answer a call. Thought it had bricked. 10 minutes later I was able to restart it and it acted like nothing was wrong. That NEVER happened before 3.1.

At any rate, that’s my experience. Would love to hear yours.

  6. Muero Says:

The only bug I’m experiencing on 3.1 is that I can’t install it! I’ve tried every troubleshooting tip imaginable, but I get errors no matter what(different error numbers each time).

  7. Stan The Man Says:

Safari shutdown several times while I was browsing deviantart.com for images of the warden from Superjail! Boom! closed all pages including this one.

  8. Yam Says:

I have the iPhone 3G. Got random shutdowns too. One experience is when I leave a third party app running and the phone went to sleep/standby mode, and stayed stuck. The only way to wake the phone up is do the complete reboot. Found is also happening while you are switching to another home screen and in the middle of the transition, pressing the sleep/wake button will make the phone stuck in sleep mode.

  9. aj Says:

I have been experiencing freezes and crashes ever since upgrading to the 3.1 OS. Usually my crashes start when I lock my phone or when I got a text or email and wa not able to read it before my phone locks itself. Those are my concerns. At first I thought it was my phone, it’s somewhat of a relief to know it’s the OS hopefully they can fix it.

  10. Benanna Says:

I have an iPhone 3g…about four days after installing 3.1 I went to plug my phone into charge for the night and the screen went black. I couldn’t wake it up or nothing. About five minutes later I was able to restart the phone. Hasn’t happened since then. As a precaution I did a restore on it today and all seems fine. Battery life does seem like it is draining a little faster than 3.0 though. With 3.0 I was randomly losing signal in my home which always has full bars NEVER happened prior to update. This problem seems to have been fixed along with safaris speed. Before it had slowed down to nothing now it is speedy.

  11. CHiRS Says:

Had one random shutdown two days ago. Running 3.1 on a 3G. Nothing since then. Hopefully that was it…but I doubt it. Haven’t noticed a decrease in battery life…

  12. FM Says:

My battery life went from bad to awful after 3.1….so I’m not alone?

  13. Mega Says:

Same problem here, updated to 3.1 in my 3G, freezes randomly, when it freezes, the iphone gets hot, that’s how I note it’s stuck in sleep mode, no incoming calls, just have to reboot. I restored it about 7 or 8 times in DFU, factory defaults, same problem. Before the upgrade, battery was not a real problem, after upgrade, it goes away faster, have to recharge daily. I’m not sure but I noted when the iphone is charging, it doesn’t get stuck. Hope we have a fix soon.

Ipod touch is havint the same problem?

  14. Campbell Says:

    I can’t take screen shots anymore. : / iPhone 3GS 32 GB.

  15. sbi Says:

First freezing was in the first night after the update. Roughly five hours after intall. After that i’ve have had more than two incidents a day. Hardware is 3G 16GB model. My calender, contacts and mail is synced with google. I’m also having mobile.me sync. Some apps have push on. I’ve have had couple incident when third party app running before sleep. There is at least one incident where the incoming call started the incident. My strong believe is that this annoying thing happens when the device is in sleep mode and something happens that would require display to wake to show notifycation or something else. Because it is only 3G issue it might have something to do with lesser memory. In xcode i do not see any crash reports.

  16. Johnathan Says:

I’ve been noticing this happening ever since I updated to 3.1 on my iPhone 3G. I didn’t know anyone else was experiencing the same thing. I hope Apple owns up and fixes this.

  17. Johnathan Says:

And it seems that I can not get it to come back on unless I hold the power and home button until it turns on.

  18. Christopher cox Says:

I have a 3Gs and haven’t experienced a single hangup yet. I absolutely love this thing … Night and day difference over my 3G when it is loaded with stuff. 3.1 update also seems to improve battery life when full time wifi and Bluetooth are used.

  19. Christopher cox Says:

Oh … And I just took a screenshot with my 3Gs. Works like normal.

  20. Chirayu Patel Says:

I have 3GS 32G after the 3.1 upgrade my battery life went from bad to terrible. I did a full factory restore and have turned off push and it seems to be okay now but I did read about a lot of people having battery issues.

  21. jason Says:

my phone shut own and i cant restore it

  22. Joseph Says:

With my iPhone 3gs 3.1 voicemail doesn’t work is anybody else having problems with there Voicmail help please

  23. Jim Says:

Yup had to plug into iTunes to restore thanks apple

  24. Philip S Says:

Just had a random shutdown tonight after updating last night. Really freaked me out. Took about 5 min for the phone to come back on and respond to anything. Glad others are having issues and not just me.

  25. JNHohol Says:

Yeah, I had my 3GS reboot itself today when going from camera zoom to the apple camera. It froze on the shutter, then when I pressed home, it rebooted.

  26. Paul Says:

I had 3 random crashes/freezes within 15 mins of each other. Using iPhone 3G(S). Had to do a reboot

  27. Andrew de Ridder Says:

I have had this issue also. It seems to happen when i toggle the mute/sound switch. The thing just turns black, and will not turn on for a min or so.

  28. DylanB Says:

    No problems here :)

  29. Cjmoore Says:

I had one random shutdown but my recurring intermittent problem is the phone being useless for incoming or outgoing calls. Even with full bars, it doesn’t ring at all when receiving calls and you can’t hear ringing or anything calling out, even though it says it’s calling. This happens for about five to ten minutes and then it’s fine again.

  30. Paul Murley Says:

Yep, random shut-downs. Random times too! iPhone 3G, updated to 3.1 via the usual method. Requires holding the home and on/off button for a while to turn it back on. Mind you I haven’t tried just pressing the power button – it’s only happened twice. I have one other bug and not sure if it’s related to 3.1 – 3G appears to be available but I can’t get internet access unless I go to airplane mode and back. Might just be the carrier though (Voda AU)

  31. icebike Says:

My 3G has shut down, (they are calling this a Coma over on the apple discussions board) at least 5 times since 3.1 was loaded.

    No battery problems.

Only way to recover is hold down the sleep button for a long time (you have to guess, nothing will show on the screen, then the home button for another long time. Rinse, repeat, until Apple shows.

Next time you plug into itunes you will have another crash report on your computer.

  32. Nikgreen Says:

I am getting a total shutdown once or twice a day. Needs a hard reset to reboot the phone. Details: UK user on O2 with iPhone 3G

  33. stattman Says:

So glad it’s not just me. Have 3G version and yesterday phone wouldn’t wake up from standby – just thought battery was flat. Tried hard reset and so on. Eventually rebooted. Strange thing is – plugged it into mac – iphoto responded but the display was still blank. Terrified that the screen had come to end of life – and my warranty has just finished. Almost made me think of conspiracy. If it’s a bug – I reckon it’s something to do with genius – it’s new and who tested it?????

  34. Roger Says:

I have a 3GS. Nothing like that happened, but camera roll shows 9 pictures, even when there’s nothing there. When tehre is, it adds 9 “ghost” pictures to the count…:-(

  35. belv Says:

i took my 3g (that was having random shutdowns after 3.1 update) to the apple store and they replaced my phone with a new one….dont think they know whats going on….new 3g running 3.1 hasnt done it yet

  36. Kael Says:

same prob as jonathon on comment 17 as well as some others… got a 3g iphone and it shuts off randomly (usually now more than once a day) and I have to wait 5/10 then after a lot of fiddling trying with holding down buttons for long times and all it turns back on again. totally irking me and really hoping a fix comes soon.

  37. Jaredkaragen Says:

I am having baseband crashes/reports sent from iTunes, I would first notice by my texts not going through… A reboot fixed it, but annoying. Reverted to 3.0.1, and still get baseband issues but the response of my 3g is alot better overall.

  38. ryan Says:

Im having the same problem. I caught it happening while my phone was closing and i had text still open. 2 times today and once yesterday

  39. Irsyad TM Nazri Says:

Using iPhone 3G… Upgraded to 3.1 one problem.. It freeze alot. And turns back ok.. Its an on-off thing. Hm. Another thing, sometime i could even online for the fact that i service provider signal is DAMM full.. Tried reboot it.. Same thing.. Is this also related to the bug??

  40. Benji Says:

My 3GS didn’t have issues prior to the 3.1 update, and hasn’t had any since. I have noticed the battery life improved, especially in standby mode.

I wonder how many of those posting issues here have previously, or currently, jailbroken their devices? I know several others with 3GS’s and 3G’s — no one has experienced any issued being claimed in the comments here.

  41. icebike Says:

    @Statman:

plugged it into mac – iphoto responded but the display was still blank.

Yeah, me too. My windows machine also saw the device, which I how I knew ti was still working, not powered. off.

And I’ve had the “Slide to unlock” slider refuse to move a couple times, and if I sleep the phone after it refuses, it will almost always go into the black screen coma.

There are over 38 thousand hits and 500 posts about this on Apple’s site, but as usual, not a word from Apple.

  42. Stooovie Says:

Smooth sailing so far. Did a clean restore to 3.1 without any backup (whats the point anyway? Everything’s synced to my Mac, all that gets lost are some saved games and a few texts). Seems smoother (esp. app opening), even though battery drains slightly quicker.

But so far, no complaints. Iphone 3g 8 gb, czech vodafone.

  43. icebike Says:

    @Benji:

From the Apple thread I posted above (#41):

Most users seeing this are 3G, with a few 3GS. Most, like myself, claim to have never jailbroken. Most claim a normal install of the upgrade. Many said they tried every trick, like uninstalling all apps, restoring as a new phone, and nothing helped.

    I hear 3.1.1 calling….

  44. SpiceRak2 Says:

My 2G was experiencing random shut-offs after 3.1 and the battery stopped indicating the correct level. It just stayed at 100% on the indicator, regardless of the actual battery level. I bought a 3Gs shortly thereafter and ran 3.1 on it.

No freezing or crashing on the 3Gs however both phones experience glitches with the iPod controls when viewing video. Once video has started playback, the touchscreen stops functioning until the video is through. The only way to stop a video before playback has finished is to press the home key. This is an intermittent glitch, most notably when using the You Tube app.

  45. AGoglanian Says:

YES! Oh my gosh this problem is so infuriating! It started happening minutes after doing the 3.1 install on release day. I figured it must have been a bad install so I wiped it again and did a second erase and install (no restore, I set it up as a new phone).

That did not solve the problem, I have tried restoring to a backup, restoring with no backup, putting the phone in DFU mode first then restoring, putting the phone in recovery mode then restoring, you name it. I’ve tried it.

It has been happening every day since I installed 3.1, at random times, it is usually 2-3 times per day, but last Sunday it happened SEVEN times to me. I was about ready to throw the phone on the ground and smash it. I called Applecare to see if they would replace the phone, but they told me I’d have to pay the $199 price because I’m out of warranty.

Please Apple, please, please, please fix this problem.

Aside from this stupid issue I have no serious complaints about 3.1, things seem to run quicker for me, and my battery life IS noticeably better than 3.0 or 3.0.1, reception seems no different, but other than that, things are positive.

But ugh. What a nightmare this has been!

    iPhone 3G 16GB / AT&T – California

  46. Natalie Says:

32gb 3GS here. Upgraded to 3.1 last week, had my first crash last night. Crashed when exiting an app and then failed to reboot. Got stuck on the apple logo boot screen. Took about 10 minutes to EVENTUALLY get back to the home screen. Was slightly worried that it was bricked. :-S

  47. bobbyp Says:

this is why we should have the option to downgrade to 3.0 if their are issues…

  48. Mattglg Says:

I was getting 2 or 2 lockups a day requiring a hard reset each time. I have tried restoring from a backup and recovering the iPhone (3G) and setting up again.

I have turned off notifications and have only had 2 lockups since – hoping for a fix soom

  49. James Dempster Says:

My iPhone 3G freezes alot more since OS 3.1 I find it mainly happens using the iPod function of it, specially when I use genius.

  50. Brian Says:

I have the same problem with my 3G, it has happened 4 or 5 times so far. My wife has the 3GS upgraded to 3.1 right after I did my phone and no problems at all. I haven’t figured out what causes the issue yet and I’m considering a restore or possibly a full restore by setting it up as a new phone when I have the time.

  51. David Godfrey Says:

me too 1 day after upgrading to 3.1

  52. Mark Spanner Says:

I have an iPhone 3G – 3 freezes with 3.1. All when phone in standby/lock. All seem to be with apps open either 3rd party or apple.

Had to reset to get phone working each time.

    Phone is not jail broken.

  53. Ivoryplum Says:

iPhone 3G – OS 3.1 Yep, my phone goes into a ‘coma’ a few times a day now. I’ve figured out if I just let it be for 10 minutes it’ll eventually wake up. For a quick fix though, I have to do a hard restart. Apple fix this. Asap. It’s obviously a problem, and I’m somewhat relieved to see others are experiencing it as well.

  54. duk Says:

same here… 3G 8gb never did a jailbreak… since 3.1 random freezes at least a couple of times a day.. with hard restart the only solution.. plus the “slide to unlock” a lot of times is really really slow (a couple of seconds delay after I slide it) which is really terrible when I have to answer a phone call… also, sometimes will not run any apps (third-party at least) – it opens the app for a second and closes.. I guess it’s a memory thing.. but then, 5min later for example (without restart) it opens all apps normally..

come on apple, this is serious now! 3.1.1 ASAP!

  55. stattman Says:

Mayyybe the new OS is soooooo advanced that it’s become self aware and needs to take a nap every now and then?

    What’s that? You want t……

  56. Joe Says:

Just buy a Palm Pre instead less problems and more regular updates. Also does tie you in to a fruit cake of a company who think they know everything

  57. frog Says:

I haven’t had any shutdowns, but my 3GS is lagging and locking up pretty frequently! Ive also got the ’smart playlist’ bug pretty badly, which is very annoying.

Beta3 was extremely buggy, but Apple have somehow managed to not fix the beta bugs – but introduce more!!!

perhaps the beta leaks (on forums such as this…lol), have made Apple a bit nervous; and as a result are seeding less betas to developers, and that’s leading to bugs getting under-reported!

  58. Dragonfly Says:

Very interesting responses, I used to have very similar issues with my iPhone (3G 16GB) even before OS 3.1. It all started when I upgraded to 3.0. You name it I had it, from frozen lock screens, jerky animations and lag to extremely bad battery life (I had to charge the phone twice a day for gooness sake!).

From what I can tell, the whole root of the issue is MEMORY. OS 3.0 and above is simply to big for the iPhone 3G’s hardware to handle, their just simply isn’t enough RAM available for it to cope with push notifications, cut, copy, paste, Genius Mix and all the other features introduced since 3.0. If you have any memory monitoring apps running on your 3g just take a look at the apps running and you’ll notice just how little memory you have available.

The size of the OS has gotten larger and larger with every update and has become too big for the 3G handle. I believe that’s why Apple waited so long to introduce some of the features seen in 3.0 (they knew that an OS the size of 3.0 needed new hardware in order to get the best out of it). And that’s why I upgraded to the 3GS (32GB) because I anticipated issues like the ones mentioned above popping up. Haven’t experienced any issues since, my 3GS is as smooth as silk (well nearly) there seems to be a bug in Genius Mix, when I open the iPod app the artwork seems to be all over the place, with images spilling out of their grid positions. Also it seems to have slowed down the iPod app very slightly.

Other than that it’s all good. Really hope Apple fix these bugs soon, cause believe me, using an iPhone with bugs can be a nightmare.

  59. Tunnelrunner Says:

    @Roger,

My camera roll counter has also been wonky; it adds an extra “one” at all times. Thank God, it’s not just me; I’ve searched all over the Internet, and you’re the only other person I’ve seen that has this (haven’t read every message in this post yet). Other 3.1 bugs I’ve seen: the mail app won’t let you send e-mail from a hotmail account and do not…I REPEAT..Do NOT purposely do a soft or hard reset if you don’t have to (prior to 3.1, I always did a daily soft reset for optimum performance) — this will freeze/brick your phone. I’ve had to do ~5 (?) restores before I figured out that it’s 3.1 that’s causing all these problems.

  60. Tunnelrunner Says:

    BTW, I use a 3G

  61. Ageman Says:

I should mention that I use a 3G as well. I agree with Dragonfly and I too have those same issues with the Genius mixes.

Here’s my whole story on this, I sent it to the TiPb’s contact message page thing:

    Hello dear TiPb’s peeps!

Ok first of all I really wish I could send you guys pictures of what I’ve seen in iTunes 9 and iPhone 3.1 interaction, syncing and so on.

I too have bugs with the new 3.1 update: Podcasts not showing right, YouTube not loading rightly, the preview photo in the camera app not showing the latest photo and Genius mixes sometimes disappear or they wouldn’t display right. That’s about it for me with the iPhone. I haven’t had shut downs or freezes yet though.

iTunes 9 has these issues when trying to sync with the iPhone: When trying to sync my music with iTunes a warning shows up and it says, “The iPhone ‘XXXXXXX’ cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the elected playlist (5.58 GB required, 2.30 GB left)….” (Sometimes it says “not enough free space to hold the entire library.”) This is why a picture should be good lol. Anyway, the so called playlist is just 1 GB! But it says on the warning that I need 5.58 GB available! It doesn’t make sense. Even if I select the option to sync music> entire library it would do the same even if I have checked off 200 songs that I don’t to be synced.

I should say that the first time I did this I chose to Sync entire library but leave unchecked songs. And it worked! But now it gives me that nasty warning.

  62. Anthony Says:

I have an iPhone 3G 16GB and it has completed frozen on me three times in the last three days. It was in sleep mode and when I try and wake it, it fails to respond to anythingl I have to do a hard reset. It’s only started doing this since I installed 3.1

  63. Sam Says:

My iPod 2g freezes when I try to exit out of tabs in safari sometimes

  64. Gregory Foster Says:

I am not having any problems remotely related to these, I’d be curious to know if the majority of these users are jailbroken.

  65. NigelC Says:

My 3g is freezing up at least once a day. No real indication as to why. Standard reset works and rather than restarting the phone it picks up where it left. It seems to also enjoy calling people at random even though locked. The phone is definitely slower loading apps – especially noticeable pulling up text messages. Not sure about battery usage as I am never more than an hour or two from a charger.

  66. Tunnelrunner Says:

    @Gregory,

Not jailbroken and never have been. Having enough stability problems as it is right now…

  67. Ageman Says:

Oh BTW I can’t sync podcasts anymore. It doesn’t want to add new podcasts. This whole iTunes 9 and iPhone 3.1 stuff is getting worst.

  68. OL Says:

iPhone 3G – after 3.1 update it freezes intermittently. Also, iTunes 9 won’t sync some files because I need more space but I actually have much more free space than the files require.

  69. AdamAnt Says:

Shut down three times when in standby and took 10 min to wake up . Poor battery life after 3.1 it was great with 3.0 .

  70. Xan Says:

I have a 3G 16G that has experienced the “coma” at least a dozen times since updating to 3.1. It has been jailbroken several times over several OS upgrades.

At first I only noticed the problem when I plugged it into my aux jack in the car (it was in sleep mode), but since then I’ve noticed it in other situations too, mostly related to sleep mode if I recall correctly.

I’ve also experienced stuttering video on a number of occasions.

Each time this has happened, the only thing that has fixed it was a forced reset (home button + power button).

It’s hard to say about the battery power since mine is near/plugged into a charger most of the day.

  71. -=mirko=- Says:

My 3G locked up on me 3 hours after upgrading to 3.1. It’s happened several times afterward. It may just be coincidence, but it seems to happen when I have used my bluetooth headset. I am able to get the iPhone working again by pressing both the home button and the one at the top of the iPhone for about 15-20 seconds. Then the Apple logo shows up on the screen. If I let it sit overnight after locking up, it appears to completely drain the battery,How about a fix Apple?

  72. Lauren Says:

I have an iPhone 3G and the OS took a couple tries to install, but was working fine until yesterday. I thought I locked my phone but when I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn’t until three minutes later when I restarted it. This happened three times.

  73. Karen Says:

8 GB 3G iPhone and MacBook with iTunes 9.

2 days after installing 3.1 the phone went black. Did a reboot and it came back on, but I could not slide to unlock.

Called iPhone Tech Support and told him I saw all kinds of posts about the problem and he just kept telling me my software was corrupt. Duh. Also, he was telling me how to find my version of iTunes on a PC. Never even asked if I was using Mac or PC.

He wanted me to reset but I needed to take some screen shots to save my Todo list. He told me you couldn’t do screen shots on the iPhone.

Did a reset 2 times and so far no further problems. Thank goodness.

  74. Bob Says:

Have had total shutdown on iPhone Tuch 1st edition since update

  75. PSM Says:

For once I’m glad to be jailbroken and not able to upgrade to the exciting new OS right away. Sounds like this one is better to stay away from. I don’t care what features it has, if it could cause me to lose the use of my phone for five minutes at random times, that’s not a chance I can take.

  76. johaen8 Says:

Count me in. I’ve had my iPhone be completely unresponsive (blank screen) about 5 times since 3.1. I have to do a hard reset in order for it to work again. I haven’t bothered letting it sit to see if it ever comes back.

Also, this past Saturday I had the previously mentioned problem where I have full bars, but yet cannot make or receive any calls. My gf thought my phone was off or something, but it wasn’t. If my phone had rang when she called, maybe I wouldn’t have been late to class. :)

  77. redbeard Says:

I have none of these problems on 3.0.1, and I’m jailbroken.

It’s ironic that jailbroken phones are far more stable than a factory phone, this started with 3.1, it has nothing to do with the jailbreak, this is Apple’s screw up.

  78. Nathan Says:

YES!! My boyfriends 3G crashed just last night!!!!

  79. Ashley Says:

I have a 3g 16GB no jailbreak or unlock & since update to 3.1 I’m having a world of problems… Shutting down at random times(I do think it’s worse when I leave a 3rd party app open & it goes to sleep), battery life has worsened, & I can’t seem to keep a signal. Where I normally have full 3g will just drop to 1 bar of Edge . To top it off at home it’ll just drop WiFi!( I know WiFi is good because laptop still works!)

  80. Karl Says:

After I upgraded from 3.0 to 3.1 my 3G locked up and presing the home key did not help. After 5 minutes it came back to life. Hope they get this fixed quick

  81. Derrick Says:

I have a 3G running 3.1 and yes my phone shuts down at least 1 time a day. I have not found any fix for this. I have to hold down the home key and the lock buttom to restart the phone. Very annoying to say the least. We need a fix soon.

  82. Angel Says:

    32gig iPhone 3GS Firmware 3.1 iTunes 9.0

Has crashed on me several times. A couple of my apps aren’t running well either.

  83. Richard Says:

Same problem here – thought I was the only one! iPhone 3G with 3.1 on O2. I can’t seem to find a pattern to the crash – I’ll try to unlock the phone and find that it’s switched itself off. Have to use the home + lock button to turn back on.

  84. Regg83 Says:

Upgraded to 3.1 and my phone is completely dead. I thought it was just mine until I read this thread. I cannot even get it to restart. If I get it to the home screen after two seconds the “Slide to Close” comes on and wants to shut it down. Basically cannot use it at all. I really hope they fix this quickly. Went to Genius Bar and they $199 for replacement. Not going to work.

  85. Paul Says:

16 GB 3G and yes I’ve gotten the random freeze and shutdown since going to 3.1. I was away on a business trip and the screen shutsdown in the middle of getting directions from google maps, while we were driving.

  86. Jim Says:

iPhone 3G Sometimes it will not come out of sleep mode. I have to do a force shutdown to get it back again. This happens at least once a day for me. Clean install of OS 3.1.

  87. Clegger14 Says:

I am also experiencing a “frozen” slide to open bar. It seems to me that the overall OS is EXTREMELY slow. I hope Apple seeks to justify this; maybe upgrading 3g users to a new 3GS handset should be looked at.

  88. Kelly Says:

I have a 3G and upgraded to the 3.1 software last Thursday. Since then, one thing that is driving me crazy that I haven’t seen anyone else experience is that my ipod won’t play all my songs. I play it on shuffle and it plays then it randomly refuses to play songs. There is no rhyme or reason to what songs it plays and doesn’t, it plays songs I’ve uploaded myself and songs I’ve purchased through itunes and vice versa. Is anyone else experiencing the ipod issue or have any suggestions as to how I can fix it? Other than this, at first every third party app would open and immediately close. I solved this problem by downloading updated versions of the apps. Ever since the upgrade, my phone randomly shuts down several times a day and only reacts to a manual reboot.

  89. Neurobit Says:

No problems here (16GB 3Gs). Also, battery life improved after the 3.1 upgrade.

  90. Joe Says:

Was on a call when a loud low bass fluttering sound started. Couldn’t hangup call. Had to reboot phone to stop the sound. Have also had 3 freezes since 3.1 update. Hope Apple is listening. iPhone 3G 3.1 16 gig.

  91. boseyjones Says:

I’m happy there’s no jailbreak for the 3GS yet. Sounds like upgrading to 3.1 is a mess and the bugs outnumber the gains. I bet the dev team or saurik will have an answer to all these bugs before Apple even acknowledges they exist. I would always be impatiently waiting for the new jailbreak to be released, but this time around I really don’t mind. 3.0 works great, so why break it now?

  92. Anon Says:

Same exact problem. I click Home button once in a while during the day to check what time it is, but sometimes nothing happens when clicked, at first I thought that it just froze, but when I realized that the only way to power it back on was to reset, I noticed that it started happening ever since I have downloaded 3.1 (the day it came out). Many people have the same issue, but I am pretty assured that a fix would be out soon.

  93. Christopher cox Says:

@boseyjones seems to me like most people with problems are using a 3G. I’m on a 3Gs and couldn’t be happier with 3.1. No hangups or freezes.

  94. fastlane Says:

3G Jailbroken 3.0.1 and quite happy, thank you very much.

  95. Desmond Says:

I’m on a 3GS 16G and I’m not having any of these problems knock on wood. I really think it’s bigger than that. It more that Apple thought they could take their sweet time because these other smartphones weren’t creeping on them. Now they are. This is Apples only phone out and these other phone companies have the time to regroup and come out with something much faster. They have been doing phones much longer. I would rather them take their time and get these bugs out before putting out something that obviously has problems. Sorry 3G owners but it seems more problems with them than the 3GS. Its time for them to get this together it’s becoming ridiculous.

  96. Larr Says:

Updated to 3.1 the day it was available and I have had random shutdowns. Send a txt and lock the phone, press the home or power button and it won’t wake up. Re installed about 5 times and still the same problem. Very annoying, much of a pain to deal with. I’m glad TiPb has finaly put this issue up…

  97. David Says:

After installed iphone 3G to OS 3.1, my phone shut down randomly very often, 2 or 3 times a day. Battery life is also shorter than previous version. I missed serveral calls because the phone shut down. Apple tech support is useless when I called. Clean restore but does not help. Time to go for HTC touch pro 2 or pre

  98. Jason Says:

iPhone 3G, have had the phone shut down twice in 2 weeks since upgrading to 3.1 – hadn’t happened before. Wouldn’t come on plugged into wall power or PC via sync cable. Was eventually able to turn on. Both times it happened while in standby with about 50% battery. Overall, battery performance seems better for me with 3.1, though.

  99. Tom Says:

3g. Froze yesterday. Went to black screen while idle. Did hard reset. Ok so far. Hope they fix it fast. Need to have a phone I can depend upon. Might have to wake up my old BB8700. That had a 4 day battery life. Battery on this one is now 45% after 2 hours of use and 3 hours of stand by on 2g.

  100. Damon Says:

I upgraded my 8GB 3G the day the software came out. That night it went into coma mode shortly after it was done. I did the hard reset, it came back to life and a little while later it went out again. The solution for me so far has been to shut off wifi. I’ve done multiple tests and if wifi is on it will die unless it’s plugged in. Turning wifi off has fixed my stability issues and other than that 3.1 has been great. I prefer to use wifi when I can though, due to the flakiness of the AT&T 3G network. When 3G is working it is pretty good but I can often be at 5 bars of 3G signal and get no data service. That’s a network thing though, not a phone thing.

  101. LeRoy Says:

Same as above, though I want to say two issues.

    1. The freezing problem, which is just annoying, though it doesn’t freeze up during a phone call. Well it doesn’t hang up at least for me and I make long phone calls.

    2. The battery life is definitely shorter.

  102. luis Says:

Have an iphone 3gs and a 3g, updated both to 3.1 and the 3G is having these frozen problems, my 3GS works fine….I thought it was only me….hope they fix it soon..

  103. Kent Says:

32GB 3GS here. After the 3.1 update over the weekend, I had two instances where the phone/data stops working. The phone does not freeze, but I can’t make/receive calls nor can I send/receive data. A reboot solves the problem. Had absolutely no problems before the update.

  104. Dragonfly Says:

Like I said earlier in this thread, it’s the hardware. The 3G simply isn’t capable of handling OS’s 3.0 and above. It’s the equivalent of running Windows Vista Premium on a low spec PC, we all know how that turned out.

  105. YD Says:

My 3G 8GB iPhone has been shutting down/crashing on average 3 times a day since the very moment I updated to 3.1. Battery is not as good as before. iPhone is warmer than before.

I cannot trust my iPhone anymore and Apple seems to be doing nothing.

  106. thenk83 Says:

This has happened to me twice in a week so far. I literally set my phone down and hit the power button to close it. Pick it up no more than 2 minutes later and its shutdown. Hafta hold Power button and the Home button. It’s a bummer honestly. My wifes iPhone is freezing a lot and rebooting since 3.1.

  107. karolus_gustavus Says:

I am using 8GB 3G. Once the safari froze but this is not my main issue. The biggest problem I have is that some of the covers in albums list do not show. they show in cover flow mode and when i am playing music. this is only a problem in vertical album list view. Anyone experienced this by any chance?

The battery life is a little bit shorter. I don’t have big change. My 3g and wifi always on

  108. Technoguru Says:

3GS semi-bricked 2x now. Both times, it just restarted after 5-6 minutes.

  109. Jeremy Says:

8GB 3G – I was having no problems with 3.0. It was working really well actually. Immediately after 3.1 update I started having random shut downs/freezes. Sometimes if I wait long enough, it just unfreezes itself. But most of the time I have to do a full reboot and it works again. I read a couple of articles saying it may have something to do with WiFi so I started turning off Wifi. It’s only happened once or twice since I started doing that. Still it’s super frustrating. And I’m mad that Apple has blocked the ability to downgrade back to 3.0. Next time I won’t be so quick to upgrade

  110. J. Danny Says:

This is enough for me to wait for 3.1.1 And I was upgrading today. phew.

  111. Jnuke Says:

I figured this was a 3.1 problem. It never happened before the up-grade. I can get my 3G to lock-up at will. All that I need to do is take it off of the charger (USB or wall) and let if go to sleep. It will not come out of sleep. After a reset it is OK until I charge it again.

  112. ADC Says:

Installed 3.1 last week on my 8GB 3G…since, locks-up 2-3 times a day on a good day – 5-7 on a bad day. Have to do the double-button reboot. Never had this problem until update to 3.1. Surprised no software update yet…WiFi on, but not always connected when this happens

  113. Josel Says:

Thanks, I thought I am alone. After installing 3.1 on my 3G, the phone started to just freeze and shut-down randomly. I thought perhaps it’s one of the apps running but no. I had to call Apple and tell me to do a “hard reset” by turning the phone off, which I obviously do all the time and but the glitch is still persistent.

  114. Andy D Says:

iPhone 3G, OS 3.1 upgraded from 3.1b3. Had this problem when I first installed the beta, and it keeps happening. Seems to happen sometimes when I get text messages, but just now I was talking on the phone, got a dropped signal, then the phone went to sleep and is apparently off. I plug it into iTunes and XCode and never see a crash report. Gotta try to restart it now.

  115. Maria Says:

I have never had my phone freeze. I installed software 3.1 now it freezes all time. I thought maybe my phone was broken but now I can see it is the software update. I hope they fix this. I also use my phone as a alarm it use to be very realiable now I cant trust it and I have to use another alarm. :(

  116. Dave Says:

Yes , my iPhone 3G randomly shutsdown , freezes . More shutdowns then freezes . This is bad on apples part, when it shutdown for no reason i had my wife call me and it was in fact shutdown and the call did not wake it . This is crazy of all things an update that makes the iPHONE not take calls bc it randomly shuts off. Unacceptable and this should be a seriouse run to fix it situation . if my wife needs me my iPHONE better not be shut off without me knowing . it’s not only a annoying bug but in an emergancy I can’t wait 5 mins for my iPhone to boot up because apple is sitting back and ot sling anything about this bug. After 2 years This one really makes no sense . Should be fixed right away — this makes apple look like Microsoft .

  117. BK Says:

Add me to the list…My 3G after updating also has 1.) Frozen and 2.) randomly restarted….ughhhhh….fix please!

  118. Chino Says:

I have 3G, freezes a few times since 3.1 install. Also, an annoying thing since then was my yahoo mails…after I read or delete a mail, it sometimes re-appear as new.

  119. Adam Says:

I have had no issues with freezing or having to reboot.

  120. Sting7k Says:

Wow glad I’m not the only one going crazy from this problem. Have the 3G and it happens all the time, even if I just check the time and don’t unlock the next time I go to use the iPhone it has been dead; reboot required. I’ve restores as new and not run any 3rd party apps for 2 days and it still happens. It is the 3.1 update for sure.

  121. Ijosito Says:

I had the shutting down problem, as well as a problem with the phone switching back and forth from the E to 3G network over and over with the phone not moving, this is at home where I have never seen the E network symbol for as long as I have had my 3G. Another problem I was experiencing was loss of carrier signal it just fluctuated up and down all day long after the upgrade. What I did was this I did a complete clean restore of 3.1 no backup (most of mine had jailbreak info in them) after restore did a sync to update all contacts and info. After I did the restore I have had full 5 bars with carrier signal 98 percent of the time no shutdowns and so far only the 3G network symbol. I did all this last night around 7 so let’s see if it’s a permanent fix so far so good.

  122. Michael Says:

Same problem here, but only on the 3G. Installed 3.1 and now it goes into a coma 3-4 times per day. Tried every idea I could to no avail. Finally downgraded OS back to 3.0.1 and haven’t had a single problem since. However, I upgraded my OS on the 3GS to 3.1 and have no such issues at all on it. Seems as though it is hardware related since it rarely, if ever, happens to anyone on the 3GS.

  123. fassy Says:

Similar symptoms as everybody else here since upgrading to 3.1. The phone will sometimes be not wakable from locked until, and sometimes an application (typically Safari) will hang. In both cases, a force reboot is required. I also have had calls/texts/push notifications not come for hours, and then flood me upon a (hard or soft) reboot.

  124. Greg Says:

Same here. Mine crashes about once a day. No pattern or recipe that I can identify. I’ve also had the Mail app die on me quite a few times since installing 3.1.

I’m holding off on updating my wife’s phone until we see a fix for this.

  125. jmhenry5150 Says:

    Add me to the list!

3.1 upgrade to my 3g 16 gb and now I get 4-5 random lock ups a day.

  126. Paul Says:

I have an iPhone 3G and since 3.1 it randomly shuts down about twice a day.

I do a hard reset by holding the power and center buttons and it reboots.

  127. Gaurav Says:

This has been frustrating me as well. It seemed like maybe it had to do with the mute switch but I’m not sure. It just happend right now and i noticed my iPhone was warm, as if it had been using up a lot of battery. It’s been happening since I did the upgrade (happened within minutes after i first upgraded).

  128. Roger Says:

EVer since update to 3.1, I have maybe half a dozen times a day a complete apparent lockup. iphone will not wake up. If I wait long enough, then I can press power button or home button to wake up.

  129. Omar Says:

    No problems here.

  130. noname Says:

Apple get your S*** together this is getting old every release of os or software theres a problem. Dont make me switch to Microsoft everything…… you monkeys

  131. jbkilluh Says:

no random freezes that ive noticed, but my iphone has shut down atleast 3 times since ive updated.. i thought it was just my phone at first, but im glad to hear its not just my problem, which means apple will probably have an update out soon enough to fix it (maybe along with the Sept 25th MMS drop date)

  132. Michael Says:

Happens to me about twice a day. Usually upon performing a hard reset and typing in my passcode, I get an instant email. It may be a coincidence, or perhaps MobileMe/Mail related. I have a 16GB 3G with 3.1 installed.

  133. Karen Says:

I know this is probably a dumb question, but how do you revert to 3.0.1 ?

  134. Derek Says:

This has been happening to since I updated to 3.1. All I have to do is reset my phone and everything seems fine but it will shut down multiple times through out the day.

  135. Emmanuel Lemire Says:

I was listening to my music and my iPhone 3GS running 3.1 just randomly shut down

  136. Titu Bhowmick Says:

I have been having intermittent shutdown problem 3 times a day. How can I got back to the previous version?

  137. Nate Says:

Same issues here. I believe I updated to 3.1 on Sunday and since then, I’ve had to somehow get the phone to reboot anywhere between 3-5 times. It seems like at least once a day and it has to be a 3.1-related issue. It certainly never happened before. This is kind of reminding me of my old Blackberry Curve… come on Apple – get it together… I love my phone, but I use it as a work phone, so it needs to function 100% of the time, not 99.9%.

  138. Titu Bhowmick Says:

More precisely, it would not wake up from standby. I have a 3G.

  139. Brandon Says:

I’m definitely getting random freezes and it won’t wake up from standby for periods of time that range from a few seconds to an hour or so. I’ve been able to wake it up by calling it, once or twice though.

Battery life is shorter too. I’m really regreting going to 3.1 so far.

  140. ml Says:

3g here. Updated earlier this week. Battery seems to drain a bit faster but not too noticeable. Only had one freeze where the home button would not turn on the screen. After several minutes of holding down the home button and/or the power button, the phone came back without a reboot.

  141. Anagram4wander Says:

Like most – I thought it was due to my phone abuse… I had some shutdowns on 3.0 but now on 3.1 it’s happening a lot.. 3g 16gb model.

  142. Waldemar L. Says:

My iphone 3G freezes randomly about 2 times a day since OS 3.1. It reboots (without PIN request) when pressing on/off and home botton for 15 seconds or by random too. Horror!!! APPLE PLEASE DO FIX THIS ******* BUG!!! I was in the Apple store in Zuerich and they didn’t know about this problem, but the other customers did. Kind regards!

  143. Gianmarco Says:

my iphone 3g shuts down randomly. to power it I need to hold for few seconds home and sleep buttons :( No solve with reset and backup restore

  144. Grimm Says:

Same deal… 3G user. Experienced numerous shutdowns and comas every day since the update. This is unacceptable software behavior. I simply cannot have a phone that I can’t trust and depend on. This has cost me to lost money and customers from my business. I’ve never jailbroken the phone, haven’t even downloaded any apps at all. This is bulls*it. Smells like the beginning of a class action law suit…

  145. icebike Says:

    @Karen:

I know this is probably a dumb question, but how do you revert to 3.0.1 ?

It is possible, but its not pretty. http://jaxov.com/2009/09/revert-back-from-iphone-firmware-3-1-to-firmware-3-0-1/

The above reversion leaves you running the 3.1 baseband and the 3.0 (or 3.0.1) OS, but it solves the coma problem.

If you can suffer thru the coma syndrome for a while, I would expect that a fix will be coming from Apple in a few weeks. I’d be tempted to live with it for the duration.

You can hurry that along by sending links to this story and the Apple discussions thread to the Mainstream Press.

  146. Rayne of Terror Says:

3G user, never had a problem with the phone until 3.1. My problem is different, when I drive to a new geographic area I have no service until I reboot the phone. My screen may say full bars and 3G but I cannot send or recieve texts, calls, or connect to the internet. I generally change geographic areas 2 or 3 times a day and this is a major hassle.

  147. Bill Says:

Well thank god for jailbreaking. I have been waiting to upgrade to 3.1, only because my 3GS is jailbroken. Otherwise I’d have upgraded already. Now I’m glad to have something holding me back from jumping in too soon on these upgrades. I’ll sit tight until 3.1.1, and redsn0w.

  148. xray Says:

Same problems with 3.1 freezes here to… :-/

  149. Lee Govatos Says:

On the first charge after the 3.1 update, my iPhone got Really Hot, more so than I’ve ever noticed before. The first shutdown came about 10 minutes later, and nothing would make it come on for nearly an hour. Since then, I’ve had a daily shutdown, but it reboots if I hold both buttons down to reset. Very frustrating, as I don’t do anything in particular to shut it off. I never had this problem once before 3.1.

  150. Chris Says:

My 3GS after 3.1 randomly started freezing up to the point I have to restart the whole phone to get it to work again. Ive had dropped calls since I bought the phone so I took it in and got a new phone last night and today once again, FREEZE crash restart. So its not just limited to 3G phones. Now my 2G phone works no problem on it, but today its screen decided to die in once place toward the top. So now I cant email as the touch area for the To: is no longer responsive yet the rest of the screen works fine.

  151. Dan G Says:

Since updating to 3.1, I have been experiencing the same issues, the phone goes to sleep mode and will not wake up from it. My girlfriends iPhone is also having the same issues.

  152. Bin75 Says:

I have the same problem and it is so infuriating! Can have full bars and not be able to make a call or get calls. Also no texts, no VVM, data. Only way to “fix” it is reboot. I have to reboot almost everytime I go to use the phone. Many times a day ever since upgrading to 3.1. I have missed dozens of calls and only get the messages after a reboot. Unacceptable! Apple has really screwed us by not only releasing this but not allowing us to downgrade to the previous version. Atleast that way we could have a usefull device. Come on apple, fix this!

  153. racemase Says:

Same here. Random lock ups. Esp. when going into standby while third party apps are running. Battery life is horrible. iPhone 3G with 3.1

  154. Adam Says:

Has happened to me almost daily since 3.1. Never happened before. Keeps happening to me at the worst possible times.

  155. Frank M. Says:

I have a 8gb 3g. Since upgrading to OS 3.1, I haven’t experienced any freezes where I had to reboot, but a really bad lag (4-5 seconds) after pressing the home button to wake it or sliding to unlock it. Also, very laggy when trying to open apps or making a selection with the touch screen. It does seem like a memory issue, which Dragonfly posited earlier.

One thing that seems to have helped was turning off notifications. Plus, it doesn’t seem to like it if the phone goes to sleep with an app running. I try to hit the home button before turning it off.

  156. Rick L. Says:

I have also had this issue. I am glad to read that it is a software issue and not because I dropped it the other day. Mine turns off about twice a day and I have to reboot! Hopefully a fix will come soon! I have also noticed my battery life has not been as good.

  157. JIm Says:

I have a 3g 16GB running 3.1, and it has been randomly been shutting down completely. I have to hold down the Power Button and Home Button simultaneously to get the phone to restart, once the Apple symbol appears on my screen, I release both buttons and it boots up fine (until the next crash). Only been happening since my 3.1 upgrade, never happened before…

  158. Watcher Says:

This is why I NEVER update immediately! I always wait about a week and see what everyone else is experiencing and dive in if it’s cool. But seeing that there are widespread problems with OS 3.1, I’ll be sticking to OS 3.0 and my MMS which I’ve had working since April! ;)

  159. P Says:

iphone 3G, upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.1 Random shutdown and battery drain.

  160. Icebike Says:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/09/17/iphoneupdateproblems/

Finally. Some press on this issue. Maybe the register will embarrass the US press into covering this issue!

  161. icebike Says:

Drat. Underscores strike again the link for the above is: http://tinyurl.com/n5y3d2

  162. Tony Elmer Says:

Today I experienced a totally random shut down. Thought it had bricked. 20 minutes later I was able to restart it and it acted like nothing was wrong. That NEVER happened before 3.1.

  163. Louie Says:

I’ve had the iPhone for two weeks. Worked fine for about three days, then it started to randomly shut off. I have a pregnant wife who’s 8 months at home so I cannot afford to miss her calls when it’s time. Happened 5 times last week. Took it to the Apple store last Saturday and they uploaded clean software. Since then it not only keeps shutting down, when I open up the iPod, it shows that I have no songs or videos, yet when I go to the “About” section it shows that most of my memory is taken. I’m VERY disappointed with this POS. Today I put my SIM card back on my BlackBerry (and I realized how much I missed my CrackBerry) and this iPhone is going back!

  164. bboy Says:

my says called failed everytime :(

  165. John Machado Says:

I have 3gs 16gig with 3.1. A few times a day if I try to make a call it will show making a call but never dials. So I have to shut it down then back on and then it will dial. So frustrating. Internet is the same issue. It starts browser but never loads a page. If i restart the phone it will then procede normally.

  166. Chris Says:

I have had to restore twice as a result of my 16GB 3G freezing up, shutting down and not turning back on. I’m glad this isn’t just me having an issue, hopefully it will be corrected soon.

  167. Visi Says:

Iphone 3g 16gb. Freezing and is very very hot.

  168. joe Says:

iphone 3g. After 3.1 update many random crashes a day. After restore I realize the only date I could restore was a year ago. the other files are un openable. Still crashes many times a day. I noticed when screen was blacked out I could take pictures or at least hear the camera shutter but not every time. I made the double tap go to favorites instead of camera to see if that helped .. still crashes but I cant hear the shutter. hard resetting like 4 to 6 times day. lost a year of voice notes and music ideas.

  169. Nick Says:

No freezing or random shutdowns. But as soon as I upgraded I started losing carrier signal even though I had 5 bars. Outgoing calls would wait 3 minutes trying to connect then call would cancel. Only way to fix it was to restart the phone. Apple Support told me to get AT&T to replace the SIM card and this seems to have worked (over 24 hours without recurrence).

I am experiencing some failed calls. Also I charged the phone for over 2 hours and the phone showed the battery only 2/3 charged. But after a restart battery meter went to 100%.

    iPhone 3G / 16mb / AT&T / Not jailbroken

  170. joepeartree Says:

Had this happen to me for the first time today. iPhone 3G 16GB. Was running the StockWatch app when the screen blanked and clicking the off/on button had no effect. Luckily, was able to get it back to life by power cycling (power + home buttons), though it only worked after I tried that after about 2 minutes of waiting.

I have about 160 apps installed.

I think I might need to start taking the advice of those who have posted above and start treating each software update like all other operating systems and wait a week or so before updating to see if anyone is having any issues. Previous to this the software updates have been fine.

  171. Steve Says:

My 3G has been unstable and freezes at least 3 times per day now since upgrading to 3.1. I never want to hear any Apple fan boys complain about Windows crashes anymore. I promise you my Windows 7 laptop is waaaaaaaaaaay more stable than my phone is now!!!!

  172. Plate58 Says:

Yes I am also going through all of the above. I called AT&T support and they are totally clueless. I’m stupid for even thinking they might have a idea of whats going on with 3.1 issues. Good way to waste 30 minutes, next time I’ll just bang my head against the wall.

  173. Smitrock Says:

iPhone 3GS won’t wake from sleep…appears to be related to camera…a few times after using camera once going to sleep phone will not wake up….have to restart by holding the sleep/wake button and the home button together. At times the camera is unavailable until a restart as well…..very frustrating…anyone else with same issue?????

  174. Joe McG Says:

Wow! This problem is obviously really widespread. I have a 3gs and have had no problems, other than I can no longer find where to turn off shuffle mode.

  175. Craig Says:

Happening to my wife’s 3G 8GB. Seems to be completely random happening during no particular operation. We have since restored the software but did also restore from a previous backup. Don’t know if it has solved the problem yet.

  176. sarah Says:

Also seeing this since 3.1 update on 3G. Have to reset to get it to wake up.

  177. Hakala Says:

Had this problem once so far and it was kid of weird. BAM! shutdown. In the middle of a game. And then BAM! I turned my 3G back on and it didn’t happen again…. BAM!

  178. MgreerNZ Says:

A one owner, in as-new condition 16GB 3G iPhone and until attempting the 3.1 firmware upgrade, it used to work perfectly. It’s now a brick, stuck in “recovery mode”. Apple Support Centre staff have been of no help. Technical advisory docs TS1275, HT1808, HT1224 and HT1766 have all been thoroughly tried. The restore-from-recovery-mode has been attempted 5 times from 3 different computers (two iMacs and one Windows). The iPhone has now been sent for “repair” to the NZ agent, who has confirmed the phone cannot be repaired. Now we’re waiting forever for Apple NZ to make a decision about what should be done, because the iPhone is unfortunately 66 days out of warranty. Not a good look Mr Jobs – particularly that it turned into a brick only after following YOUR technical advisory that the iPhone should be upgraded to v3.1 !!!!

  179. Hakala Says:

Lol meant to say “kind of weird” and btw, it was in total randomness that this occured. I have tried setting up the same situation with all the same variables but no same outcome has occured. Could this possibly be a PNS bug? Maybe two or three push notifications arriving at the exact same time and cause mondo problemō in da iPhone??? Who knows…. Apple! BAM!

  180. Stephen Says:

Me too. 3G. No clean install. Doesn’t happen when actively using it. It goes to sleep and doesn’t wake up. I’m pretty sure it’s not a shutdown (turning it on doesn’t work, must hard reset).

  181. andre Says:

I have and Iphone 3G black my phone also shutsdown but I cant get it to boot up without pressing both buttons thus resetting the phone. I noticed this too since upgrading to 3.1. Looking forward to a fix soon too. Wish I could go back to 3.0

Ive tried restoring phone to new state and a saved state only worked for 24 hrs then back to problems.

First Issues Ive had since I bought the phone hope this is not an indicator of things to come….

  182. Jay Says:

WOW I was gonna upgrade tomorrow lol not anymore!!!

  183. David Says:

    Confirmed here.

  184. Icebike Says:

    Just happened to me again!

Since I was busy, I just put it down and walked away. Ten minutes later I picked it up and tapped the sleep switch and it came up normally!?!?

So next time this happens to you, just give it 10 or 15 minutes and see if it recovers.

  185. Will Says:

this just happened to me! i was looking to see if its common

  186. Colin Says:

My 3G has been freezing and locking up and all around actiung strange since 3.1. Flick scrolling through podcasts isn’t smooth anymore and podcasts appear out of order often.

The other day I thought it bricked or about ten or fifteen minutes then it just came back on.

  187. Chad P Says:

Geez that was alot of scrolling… Anyway, eveytime I open the app store I have to log in. I didn’t have to do that before upgrading to 3.1. Is it something I’m doing wrong or a bug? I’ve logged out and logged back in already.

  188. Sloandrew Says:

Been experiencing frequent moments when the phone is unresponsive once sleep mode has been activated. This takes 2 minutes until the phone becomes responsive.

One time it woke up and every time I pressed either the power or home button it would take a screen shot of the iphone. Any fixes to this yet?

  189. bb Says:

freezes when trys to sync itunes 9 with iphone 3.1 have 3Gs. spent 3 plus hours at genius bar. seems to be ipone 3.1 and not itunes 9. People at apple store have no idea how to fix

  190. Allan Says:

OMFG!!!. – Was thinking of upgrading this weekend. Won’t now. Thanks for the warning.

  191. Beth Says:

Yep, same here. 16GB 3G. Loses coverage constantly, reboots at random, and today showed a nifty terminal-esque screen complaining about a kernel panic, yay! DFU and a fresh reset later, I tried using web apps and NO third party apps, but made NO difference. I was running the betas and noticed the same issues… I was eagerly awaiting the “stable” update in anticipation that this would be fixed, but to no avail.

And I’m amazed safari hasn’t crashed during the posting of this comment considering it crashed 5 times just through the process of reading the other 190 comments.

Between Apple and AT&T, I’m really wishing I just stayed with Sprint and my broken HTC Mogul :(

  192. Michael Says:

Same problems as everyone els on my 3G. Turned off the Safari anti-fraud preference and – fixed. At least for now. Probably worth trying since it is so easy. My phone was nearly completely frozen and barely got to the preferenace settings. Rebooted. Like new.

  193. Montyfood Says:

3.1 had been generally okay for me since install. Still had some of the UI glitchiness of 3.0 but I’d learned to live with that. Also had some issues with signal reception at home which has previously always been strong.

But this morning SMS sending kept failing. I shutdown and on reboot it just got stuck on the Apple logo. Had to hold down Home and Power button to re-reboot. Now seems okay again.

    (3G 8gb on O2 UK)

  194. Keithw Says:

Have a 8 MB 3G NOT jailbroken, and since installing 3.1 my phone has twice gone into this “coma” state. Just like everyone else, I can wake it up by holding down the power button and the home button at the same time – but I’ve got to hold it for quite a long time before I’ll see the Apple. Once rebooted the phone works like nothing ever happened to it. I am sure Apple will have a fix for this shortly. My other concern is that this might be coming from downloading and installing the AT&T 5.1 config file so I can get MMS working early. When I first installed the 3.1 it came with the AT&T 5.0 settings. I found the link to install the 5.1 from a blog post here several days ago – since installing the 5.1 and getting MMS that’s when these random shut downs have occured.

  195. Nick Says:

Same problem as that. Brand new out of the box, upgraded to 3.1 as part of the activation, did a sync with iTunes 9 on a mac book pro (new version) and the phone died after some random usage. Tried restoring it from a backup and it happened again. Tried restoring it as a new phone, same problem, just shuts down. Contacted Apple support (they never heard of it) so am sending the phone back. Just hope the new one comes with OS 3.0. Will not be upgrading until 3.1 is patched.

  196. Manolo Says:

Have a 3GS. It freezes when locked. Hold down the power button and voila. Still annoying, though.

  197. Sonya Says:

My apps don’t start after a 3.1 upgrade. All default apps work, but when I try to run an installed app (any of them) they start for 2 sec and then I get dumped back to home screen. Also experience the random shutdown once.

  198. Paul Says:

    Me, too: random shutdowns.

  199. Isaac Says:

Since upgrading to 3.1, I’ve had a few crashes, but the most infuriating bug I’ve encountered is the schizophrenic shuffle. Shuffle decides to randomly turn off 5-10 times a day. One minute the songs are playing randomly, the next they are playing in sequential order.

  200. Bin75 Says:

Still no word from apple? Unbelievable!

  201. Lewis Says:

I have a 3G and the phone freezes 5 times a day since upgrading to 3.1 The only way I can prevent it is by turning off the auto lock. This of course drains the battery even more!

  202. Andrew Says:

Same issue, iPhone 3G 16GB. Updated to 3.1 using iTunes 9 and now my phone crashes constantly and have to hard reboot to get it to run again. Seems like it may be having troubles reading the battery level. It’ll say it’s fully dead, then I do the hard reboot, put it on the charger and a few minutes later says it’s fully charged.

I’m a huge fan of Apple’s products, but this seems like a very Microsoft style screwup. This is so bad I’m actually reconsidering buying another iPhone and switching to the Palm Pre instead for my next phone.

  203. Andrew Says:

P.s. my iPhone crashed the other night and because my alarm didn’t go off, I missed an MRI (in Canada, you miss one, you wait another 4 months).

I should have taken more precautions, but nonetheless, a software update shouldn’t take something I used to be able to rely upon 100% and turn it into a useless POS.

  204. bb Says:

Since 3.1 update. Push email comes through even when set to manual and “Fetch New Data” is off and the email app is not open. Weird!!!!

    iPhone 3Gs

  205. Miguel Machado Says:

Happening to me either. Since I updated to 3.1, my 3g, didn’t wake and i need to restart :( . I hope that apple are working in this bug…

  206. Flashy Says:

Same here, any idea of a fix date???

  207. Johnathan Long Says:

Mine iPhone 3G has been doing the same thing since the upgrade to 3.1 … took it to the apple store & they basically refused to acknowledge a problem & refused to exchange even for a refurb because mine is out of warranty period(less than 2 months).

  208. Flashy Says:

Come on apple fix this problem for us. 6 freezes tonight!!!

  209. the real truth Says:

An honest question: how is it that these people put the same update onto the same device that i have and ive had not a hint of a problem on neither my or my wifes phone….im not trying to be a jerk here just asking…..

  210. Laurent Says:

Wow sucks you guys have to deal with all that. Can’t you just go back to 3.01?

  211. Palconi Says:

8gb 3G, never jailbroken. Have been dealing with multiple freezes a day! All started with 3.1 and iTunes 9. Time to go back to the blackberry till this gets fixed…

  212. Sasha Says:

My iPhone 3G (ver. 3.1) Freezes, drops calls and randomly shuts down (not restarting), but completely shuts down. Can’t beleive that Apple released this update without testing it…

  213. Hesham Says:

Same problem here…. GOD… Blackout in sleep mode, no wakeup from black screen & people call me saying that am not answering while I have nothing on iPhone. This is since upgrading to 3.1 :-( Please Steve Jobs… Not this way

  214. James Says:

16GB 3G, never jailbroken. I updated it last friday using itunes 9. I am now getting the random freezes/shut downs! it only happend 2 times so far. This is very bad for Apple. The FCC (US)needs to check OS updates on cell phones devices, that goes for even MS moble, before they are released to the public. Because now if someone has a life or death emergancy and the phone does not respond because of a lagit OS update.

  215. Scott Says:

Same here. 3g 16gb, never jailbroken. Started freezing when sleeping. Holding down both buttons yields a reboot and everything acts fine.

Does seem like this could have been caught in Q/A testing.

  216. sean Says:

i started having the problem after i updated from 3.1. i restored my iphone 3g and it worked fine for a bit…but now the problem is back again. way to go apple.

  217. Tom Says:

Went to Apple store last night in CA. Have been having serious batterylife issues for a week

Diagnosis was bad battery. Gave me a shiny 3g. Went to sync it and could not without doing the upgrade. So far so good. Twice the life I had and still at 50%. No freezes yet.

The Genius hadn’t heard of any freezing issues. At least that’s what he said.

  218. awr Says:

4-5x per day non-responsive; won’t let me slide to answer a call, won’t bring up shutdown when holding the sleep button, randomly restarts, locks up in any program.

I was having slow response (like won’t slide to answer) with 3.01, and probably even 3.0, but not the freezes, locks, restarts.

  219. FLASHY Says:

The genius’ are told to pretend they know nothing about it other wise they would be relacing hundreds and thousands of phones every day. They are told to let it lye for a few days until the update comes out and away we go again. saves apple millions in replacement phones.

  220. Adam Says:

I’ve had my iphone 3G for less than three weeks, and since upgrading to 3.1 about a week ago, I’ve had it freeze on me about 6 times. I’m really getting over having to reset it all the time

  221. Jerome Says:

Having 3g 16gb. Worked great with 2.x firmware. Upgraded to 3.0 and it was noticably slower with some hangs of 1-2 seconds. Upgraded to 3.1 and got slightly faster leas hangs of few seconds BUT the phone hange in that coma state people described. About 1 to 2 times a day. Have to reset it every time. Putting phone in 2g resolved the coma state issue (ne’er happened anymore). Looking forward for a fix…

  222. Bin75 Says:

I am getting SICK of this POS and am really regretting the decision to switch AT&T and iPhone! The arrogance of apply by not even mentioning that they are working on it. By simply allowing a way to simply roll back to 3.0.1 whe they work it out would make a lot of people happy at this point. Come on apple, you dissapoint me!

  223. William Anderson Says:

I am now on my new iPhone 3G 16 GB because this was my 4th complaint on the same phone. (inability to switch networks, Safari constantly closing me, USB port won’t connect to PC or Mac) and now the never ending push notification shutdowns. I pressed the support man to tell me why this was happening and he told me that this update causes a problem with the built In sudden motion sensor. It incorrectly receives info that it is falling putting it In unresponsive mode. I got a new one, that kindly was only updated to 3.0 and it is still working fine. Bottom line, press the guy on the phone or at the Apple Store.

  224. Lucas Axelrud Says:

I´ve got the same problem: 3G shutting down after installing OS 3.1. The only way turning it on again is to press the two buttons for a while. This really sucks!!!

  225. Stephen Says:

Freezes, jams, slow, battery drian, half my SOS won’t run……the pain! Please fizz!

  226. Vincent Says:

iPhone 3G 16GB – experienced fast draining battery after 3.1 upgrade and much slower performance in many apps, when switching between them and waiting for keyboard to appear… worse than beta, experience is very un-apple to me!

  227. Erik Says:

3G user, upgraded to 3.1 thursday. Experienced my first freeze thursday afternoon. I thought it was bricked, had to do a reset by pressing home and the power button. I’ve had 2 more freezes in two days. They have always occured while I have my headphones connected and using the ipod functions.

  228. Dean Loh Says:

Using 3G, updated to 3.1 when it first came available. Based on my observation, the freeze happened when new email notification came in while the phone was on standby mode. I disabled fetch mail, left the phone on standby for a while and I have no problem waking it up again. Will continue to observe if this solves the issue (for now that is!)

  229. eric Says:

my experience is slightly different. i installed 3.1 and everything seemed to be ok. now, however, my phone will randomly not get any messages (text or voice) (my friends have to call my land line to tell me they’ve been calling me). also, the phone randomly won’t connect to internet or send messages (which is always my signal that i need to reboot the phone). i do this, and suddenly get like 20 texts or 20 vm’s. it’s annoying. finally, if i try to turn the phone off, the screen goes black, appears to be off, but then randomly comes up with my standby screen for a second or two. it’s weird- like a random power surge after the phone turns off. not sure what the heck is going on. i have an 8GB 3G phone, not yet a year old either.

  230. JX Says:

I have a 3gs, and ever since the 3.1 upgrade, it would randomly drop out of network, but with a full reception bar and the “3G” flag on. It would stop receiving any calls or messages without realizing it at all until I try to make a call myself.

Today my wife and daughter were locked out for two hours because they couldn’t reach me and I didn’t know my phone was dead.

I don’t think Apple realizes how serious this problem is. Maybe they will find out from a class action law suit.

  231. budi tjahyadi Says:

I try to update my iphone with OS 3.1 but i get trouble with my Iphone. it never used anymore and only on display show plug into the itunes.. and my iphone can’t detect on my computer because No Driver mobile device can install succesfully. Pls help me what can I do to fixed my iphone normally again? TQ GBU my email address: buditjahyadi@yahoo.co.id

  232. Flashy Says:

Ok people call 02 claim your consumer rights and I have a brand new iPhone coming Tuesday. They pretend not to know about the problem but claim the sales of goods act and the spill the beans. Don’t give in and you too with have a new phone ***

  233. Bin75 Says:

I never thought I would say this, but I definitely support legal action against apple for this one. Mainly because of the lack of aknowledgement of the issue and how serious it is for those of us that depend on our phones. Think about it, some people have serious medical conditions or terminally ill family members. Communication is essential in some cases. This needs to be addressed.

  234. Kevin T Says:

My iPhone 3G has been freezing and/or shutting off at random ever since 3.1

It sometimes it just turns off, other times the screen goes blank and after 10-30 minutes when it finally responds, it has to locate a signal again.

    Really Apple?

  235. Andres Says:

AT&T; Austin, TX. Hi, have experienced same issues on 32GB 3GS and 8GB 3G after updating to 3.1. Random shut downs. Lock ups. Freezing during web browsing, constant crashes in 3rd party apps. 3GS shut down and was unresponsive for 20 minutes after update. Soft or Hard resets did not work. 3G just locked up on home screen and was unresponsive to all touhes until soft resetting. Obviously, this is a big problem, Apple. Seems like one user in Europe experienced the same, but I’m also noticing that almost all posts are from 3GS and 3G users in the U.S. This means that it probably has something to do with the MMS capabilities that only those phones will have on the 25th. Interestingly enough, it seems that text messages, or emails, or calls, seem to excerbate the issue. Apple will not own up to it. Better fe fixed with the new update on the 25th, which will not be delivered OTA. We will all have to plug our phones back in and download the software, install it, and then Apple will verify the installation. All in all, wasting even more of my time to transfer all my 27GB of data back to my 32GB 3GS. Bravo, Apple and AT&T. Gosh, the FCC should really step in. Make your millions. Sell more. Decrease the quality. Sad, Apple used to sell products that just worked.

    Cheers!

  236. Chris from Colorado Says:

iPhone has been freezing ever since 3.1. It’ll be working fine and then when I go to turn it back on I find that it has been automatically shutoff or frozen. What the F Apple…. Thanks for the update that seemingly did nothing but screw my phone up.

  237. Ron P Says:

Same problem here and no solution but to reboot everytime, many times per day. This is becoming more than just an inconvenience. With full bars I will have no service of any kind. Has Apple mentioned that there is even a problem or are they playing dumb? There should be a button to go back to the previous working version and I think everyone would be less frustrated. For some people missing calls = losing money! This is ridiculous, I should have stayed with Sprint. The phones were nothing to brag about but they did serve the purpose, that is making and receiving calls. Apple needs to get their act together.

  238. dan Says:

I have an iphone 3G , 3.01 update. I never had issues till 3.01. I have 126 mb free and have tried removing content before with out success (so i put it back on)-and the same issue.

My phone will freeze at random times, I’ll get off the phone, put it in my pocket then go do pull it out again and it’s frozen! I am trying to do a restore but it can’t even get it synced. I am using an iMac with 10.6.1 with a 2 ghz intel – 4 gig memory – 1tb hard drive.

I really don’t know what the issue is…

  239. eric Says:

i have an iphone 3gs 16gb…never had problems until update for the 3.1 beta…my phone is bricked, try downgrading and wont work, im screwed unless i get a new phone or apple fixes it

  240. mel Says:

I too have the same problem 3g and 3.1. Recently upgraded to new itunes phone was stuck in restore modes then emergency call mode. Had to reactivate phone completely. Since restore of phone I have had random shutdowns. The phone will stay on the black screen for about 5-10 mins. Sometimes charging the phone helps other times I have to wait until it feels ready to turn on. Hopefully a fix will come soon.

  241. justin Says:

16G 3G same **** here.. freezes!!! 3.1. This is annoying.

  242. Tanya Says:

Me too. Ugh. 3g running 3.0.1 of course. Anyone?!

  243. Les Says:

New Iphone 32 gs No reason battery full went completely black for 4 hours held down both power buttons and then in 10 seconds came back to life.

  244. Ll Says:

iPhone 3g 16 gig never jailbroken. Random shutdowns (2-3 a day) since 3.1 upgrade. hard reset works bur annoying as heck. What is the word from apple?

  245. coolvic Says:

I tried the rollback process that icebike posted. It worked for me and wasn’t that hard to do. I will definitely keep it at 3.0.1 until Apple releases a new working update.

  246. Dolita Says:

iPhone 3G 16gb and I’ve had numerous random shutdowns since I upgraded to 3.1

I did a restore from backup when updating to 3.1 and because of the problem, I tried to do a complete restore by going to ‘Recovery mode’, but it didn’t solve the issue either.

  247. CoolJoe Says:

I have a 3GS and that happened to me when I took a video and i went to view it. I tried to view it in landscape but it wouldn’t so I just tried to play the video and it wouldn’t register my touch and then shut itself down. It must have started during the video because the video is now corrupted and I cannot view it

  248. Shorton Says:

Wife and I both have iPhone 3G. Both updated to 3.1 on Wednesday. Neither jailbroken. Both phones experiencing random death, usually preceeded by the phone becoming very HOT. Battery life going down rapidly as well. Phones are used mainly for business. APPLE YOU ARE COSTING ME MONEY!

  249. Chris Says:

I have had the iphone 3G for a little over a month. Updated to 3.1. Saturday my phone went blank and had to be reset. It came back and so far has been ok. I also noticed my battery draining faster since 3.1.

  250. Dave Says:

After I installed 3.1 my iPhone 3G became completely unreliable. Within two days I had 13 random shutdowns, only fixed by a hard reset. The battery life was also all over the place. I got so fed up with not knowing if it was going to work or not I found a way to downgrade back to 3.0.1. Now it works great with no problems. I’ll be waiting until apple fixes this before I load another update. For all those who want to do the same go here and follow the instructions. http://jaxov.com/2009/09/revert-back-from-iphone-firmware-3-1-to-firmware-3-0-1/

  251. Travis Says:

Yep, no freezing, but definetly shut downs and terrible battery life since 3.1

    I am on a Iphone 3g

    Please fix this Apple.

  252. Jim Jilla Says:

My Iphone 3G started rebooting when the autolock kicked in and it could not fully boot up to fully active status. It would reboot (like a hard reboot), it would be completely off for a second, try to boot back up, I’d see the white Apple logo, then it would boot off again and start the cycle all over. It would never get past the white Apple logo unless I plugged it into itunes or my car charger. It would go through this cycle all night and the battery would be less than 20% in the morning but no home screen. THEN I upgraded to 3.1 and no improvement. THEN I restored back to factory and no improvement. If I put my autolock and passcode on “never”, it would not reboot on it’s own, but the battery ran out VERY fast. It stopped doing this reboot/cycling on Friday night and has been ok since then. This happened before, but only for 24hrs about 4 months ago, and 3 months before that. Unexplained.

  253. Suzanne Says:

    Ditto for my 3G. =(

  254. miked Says:

Freezing and shutdown on my 3G after getting the 3.1. Hurry up and fix it Apple. I’m tire of re-syncing my iPhone to get all my apps to work again.

  255. davez Says:

I have a 3GS and am getting all sorts of random freezes and shotdowns. Once today the phone went into the Apple mode restart -all by itself! strange. The other thing that is annoying is that on Friday, I thought the phone was working fine. I had 5 bars and 3G coverage signals all day, but strangely no calls were coming in. I didn’t realize there was a problem until my wife emailed me and wondered why I wasn’t picking up the phone. I reset the phone and bam! all of a sudden I had 3 voicemails and missed calls. Now I get this signal drop coverage all the time, in places where this never happened before. Should I replace the sim card at AT&T?

  256. Matt C Says:

Once I upgraded to 3.1 on my 3G, my phone will randomly freeze and I can’t wake it When this happens I can’t receive calls/txts. This is happening anywhere from 3-10 times a day. I’ve tried to keep track of if I’m doing a particular thing every time this happens, but so far it looks to be completely random. Only way to fix the freeze is to do the power button & home key hard reset. Very annoying, I hope it gets fixed.

  257. Ryan Says:

Since upgrading to 3.1, my phone is going black screen/unresponsive about 5 times a day. This SUCKS!!! It seems to happen right after I send or receive a text about 30% of the time. It also seems to happen when an app is open and the phone goes to sleep. It just does not wake up. In both these scenarios, I must hold down both buttons to force reboot. 5 TIMES A DAY. I have already tried restoring to default and then restoring from backup. It didn’t solve the problem. Wish there was a way to go back to 3.0 when things were dandy. iphone 3G 16GB.

  258. racemase Says:

Strange, I read somewhere that uninstalling AppSniper might help. I did this and other random stuff and suddenly I had a working iPhone again. But yesterday I’ve installed Monkey Island and other apps and now the freezing is back. Is worse when I put my iPhone to sleep while third party apps are running but it this morning it crashed while in the home screen with display off just pausing music via remote. Maybe the file system is corrupt and the OS hangs when there are too many small files on the phone?! It is really sooooooo annoying! ;-(

  259. Lee Says:

My wifes 3G is having the random shutdown problem after upgrading to 3.1, happens 3-4 times a week. My 3G is having absolutely no problems – both phones were upgraded one after the other and both are linked to the same iTunes account.

  260. Simon Says:

My 3g just isn’t the phone it used to be since updating to 3.1, freezes all the time but the most anoying is he unlock screen becomes unusable for a good 5 seconds before it allows me to unlock.

Hopefully they can un-break everything in 3.2!

  261. jez bennett Says:

I have had that problem; went to an apple store yesterday and the genius plugged it in and looked at a log. said there wasn’t much surprising that the log file showed but he gave me a new iPhone. My guess is that the problem is quite widespread but they don’t yet know why.

  262. Chris Says:

I have a 16gb 3G and it worked fine up until I installed 3.1. I loved the 3.0 update. My iPhone has been freezing and shutting down atleast 3-4 times daily and this morning it did it 5 times and every time it requires a hard reset but usually doesn’t come back on during a usual hard reset. I have to hold it some times for 20 seconds to get it to restart. 80% of the freezes have occurred when using safari or app and goes to sleep mode through auto lock. I have tried multiple resets and restores to no luck. I’m getting very irritated at apple for not owning up to this. Hopefully they will have an update soon!!

  263. mac Says:

i have experienced screen blackouts and iphone suddenly turns off. 2 different cases that have totaled about 5 or 6 times AFTER 3.1. Did not experience this before.

    i have iphone 3G 8gb. firmware 3.1 iTunes 9.0

i have lost track of what methods worked that normalize my iphone. but surely reset works. thats holding power button and home button at the same time “restarts” and works fine after that.

but still annoying coz it happnes randomly.

hope apple see’s this and acknowledges and fix it!

not sure if this is an issue when battery is about to reach critical level though.

  264. Weezil Says:

Both my 3G and 3GS froze this weekend. Holding down the Power and home button at the same time for 30 seconds seemed to recover and reboot the phones for me. Also had the battery charge indicator not display full charge on my 3G, a reboot corrected this. I was correct it seems in assuming it was a 3.1 bug.

  265. Chris Says:

I have experienced this multiple times. It never happened before 3.1 and I have a 3g. Sometimes when I finally get it to come back, on my home screen it will show what looks like a volume control and even snap a picture sometimes. Very frustrating.

  266. Andreas Says:

This is a BIG problem. My 3GS have rebooted randomly several times a day. Today, it even rebooted in a phonecall. Use about 10 minutes to come up again!!!!!!!! Where are you Apple?! ANGRY! At least you could admit there is a problem and tell us that you are working on a fix!!!

  267. JHass Says:

Same problem here on my 3G. Complete reinstall twice, got a little bit better, but shut downs occur around 3-10 times per day. Often, will take a full 3 minutes to respond to anything. Very annoying, seems to happen mostly when my phone is in my pocket. Also, my battery life sux! Maybe the lock is not completely shutting off the screen’s touch sensors and overloading system and draining battery? Just a guess.

  268. Steve Says:

Me too… this is an annoying bug. The phone is freezed, black screen but if you receive a call, it sounds as free to the caller. I hope on a fix soon because it’s really a big big problem.

  269. Mark Mondol Says:

My wife has a 3G that shows “bars” but will not make or receive phone calls. Restore and it works for awhile then it stops working again.

Problem appeared after Apple gave me a new phone, under warrantee , when my old phone wouldn’t do bluetooth sync. This, unfortunately, happened after the 3.1 release so the new phone had 3.1.

  270. Bruce M Says:

I have called Apple support and done all of the things that they told me to do and nothing has worked. If I didn’t have other family members on my plan, I would move to another carrier and turn my iphone into ipod touch. If your phone doesn’t work, what good is it? Is Apple going to even acknowledge that there is a problem. Their lack of response is very ATT, Verizon like.

  271. Andy Says:

I’ve had it happen several times since upgrading. I think every single time it’s been when the phone was sitting unused (locked) and when I went back to it and pressed the Home button it wouldn’t come back up. I’m able to get it restarted with a seemingly random combination of holding the Home and Power buttons for a long time. I’m pretty sure I haven’t had any times where it went into this “coma” while I was using it.

Have a 3G 16 GB and it was on 3.0.1. My upgrade to 3.1 failed the first time and thankfully I had just done a sync: did a restore to that backup and then the upgrade went ok. I was having some battery life issues and some of the heat problem since going to 3.0.1 (before 3.1) but battery life seems much better w/ 3.1 for me and the heat problem is much less frequent and not as hot (so far).

I’ve had a few app crashes but not sure any worse than before 3.1.

Lewis’ mention of turning off auto lock and one of the Chris’ mention of “80% of the freezes have occurred when using safari or app and goes to sleep mode through auto lock” sounds like a good lead. I normally leave mine at one of the app pages when it auto locks (not inside an app) or I push the power button to force a lock. I’ll watch these 2 factors for a couple days.

Hope Apple is watching this thread.

  272. Inna Says:

IPhone 3G started locking up after 3.1 install. I did a clean install, reloaded all the music and apps by hand (not a restore). Now it mostly locks up when a podcast ends, or I stop the music using the bump on Apple headset. Truly random lock up happened only a few times after the reinstall.

The battery life is a little worse.

  273. Jeff Says:

I have an iPhone 3G, and upgraded to the 3.1 software and have experiencing the screen blackouts. I notice that usually it comes back on in about 5 minutes. The iPod playing is always playing. I usually try to restart it and it works intermittently when doing so.

  274. Rafa Says:

My 3G iphone started freezing after a few minutes after updating to 3.1 – spanish. It happens almost every day. Only rebooting solves it but it will happen again tomorrow. Sometimes, it happens when I pause the music with the earphone button. When I press again, it is blocked.

  275. Rafa Says:

I wrote also post 274 but I didn’t write that now, with 3.1, my battery life is very, very short.

    Thank you all.

    Rafa

  276. Damon Says:

My iPhone 3g was purchased in mid July began to freeze shortly after my first update was 3.0. Back when I got it it it only froze up about once a week or so, now however, with the update of 3.1 it freezes up anywhere from 10-20 times a day. I do try and keep as few messages and recent calls and apps as I can but it doesn’t seem to help.

  277. Fernando Says:

Iphone 3G 16gb freezing on stand by, impossible to wake up. When freeze no call receiving, black screen. Maybe something related to any aplication trying to actualize and consuming all the system resources, whenever it freezes you notice intensive comunication (noticed by the interference in sound equipment near)anda also heating. Sometimes after a few minutes it come back to normal. But when you wake it, shows no operator signal, comming back in a few seconds Begined after 3.1 upgrade. In the days that it don`t freezes battery life is much longer. When you remove clena and re-insert the SIM card it stays 2 or 3 days without freezing. Tryed to blanc reinstall the system (not restored) no sucess.

  278. John Says:

I have a iPhone 3G, and ever since the 3.1 upgrade I have to constantly reset it to turn back on. Also, the phone gets extremely hot and is slower than the original 3.0.

  279. Brian Says:

iPhone 3G 16GB – having numerous random freezes just as described in posts above. I don’t know if it is logging keypresses while it is locked up, but several times it has taken a screen shot as soon as it wakes up. Tried resetting phone to factory settings and then restoring from backup, but that did not fix the problem. Also had problem where incorrect album art was mapped to the wrong songs, just removed and re-added all music to fix that one. Some apps also not working properly now, like ESPN Scorecenter, which was working fine several days into install, but as of yesterday no longer works. Thanks Apple.

  280. Jeff Says:

I’m finding very similar issues. The iPhone 3G with 3.1 OS won’t wake from sleep mode. About 3 – 4 times per day. Happens when I put it into sleep both when in a program and when at the main desktop screen. A completely new issue since loading 3.1. The only way out is a complete reboot each time.

  281. Kelsey Says:

This has happened to me at least once a day since i upgraded to 3.1. I have a iPhone 3G and i went to the Apple store twice and nothing seems to fix it! starting a day ago ive also had problems with two of my apps..like the maps app and facebook. I hope they come out with something soon…its very aggrivating!

  282. Nathan Says:

I upgraded to 3.1 as soon as it was available. Today was the first day I had the freeze on what appeared to be off condition. It has happened 3 times today and I can’t seem to figure out the button combo to turn it on. It almost seems as though it has less to do with the button combo than it does with how long I screw around holding them all down…. AAAARRRRGGGG!!!!

  283. Dustin Says:

8Gb Iphone 3g will randomly shut off 3-4 times throughout the day since updated, also texts won’t fully send, they just stop and give me the little red exclamation point sign.

  284. Juan Says:

I have a iPhone 3G and since the new 3.1 update, it’s a piece of **** now! It freezes at least 5 times a day and sometimes I have to reboot completely just to get it working again… WTF IS APPLE DOING TO FIX THIS!!!!!!!!!??????????????????

  285. Adam Deacock Says:

I have the coma problem with my 16Gb 3G too. It was orginally several times a day and now seems only to happen once a day (could be random variation though). I wonder whether this imnproved with update of several apps. Have left feedback with Apple.

  286. karl Says:

both my wife and i have 3g’s (8gb) and are also suffering from this problem, several times a day.

she thought there was something wrong with hers, but since mine is doing it too….

  287. john Says:

My 3g has randomly shutdown about 7 times over the past week and a half. The worst part is that when I do a hard reset and it comes back up I will suddenly receive texts and voicemails that were sent hours before.

In addition I am completely missing phone calls, people have told me they had been trying to reach me numerous times but my phone never rang or registered a missed call.

Restarting my phone is annoying but i can deal with it, but what is unacceptable is for the phone to be not able to receive calls for hours at a time.

  288. Katie Says:

I have the exact same problem:

“My 3g has randomly shutdown about 7 times over the past week and a half. The worst part is that when I do a hard reset and it comes back up I will suddenly receive texts and voicemails that were sent hours before. In addition I am completely missing phone calls, people have told me they had been trying to reach me numerous times but my phone never rang or registered a missed call. Restarting my phone is annoying but i can deal with it, but what is unacceptable is for the phone to be not able to receive calls for hours at a time.”

  289. Ricardo Says:

My phone goes black and can not be woken up, now it woke up but make a camera noise when i press the home button like I am taking a picture….when I am not. I need to go back to OS 3.0. I have the 2nd generation iphone

  290. Andy Says:

@Brian: ESPN Scorecenter quit working for me too. Not sure if mine worked after the update to 3.1 like you say yours did. I hadn’t checked it for a week or so until this weekend.

  291. Bingo Says:

Add me to the list with a 3G that I upgrade to 3.1 and have the above symptoms with an unlockable freeze at lest twice a day since 3.1. Every effort to unfreeze fails until I begin to charge after usually after 10 min the Apple sign comes on and shortly thereafter I can unlock. What a PITA!

  292. n/a Says:

mine too, does the same damn thing.. i’ll go to take my phone out of my pocket and look at the time real quick but nothing happens.. it just stays in sleep mode unresponsive. I then reset it, and finally get it working but when i put it in sleep mode again and take it out of my pocket say 10 minutes later, it does the same thing again. this has happened to me at least 50 times a day. it has gotten somewhat better, now only 10-20 times a day… please apple fix this issue asap!!!

  293. josh Says:

Happens to my phone 2 or 3 times a day. Never happened before 3.1.

  294. Dutch Says:

I am having the same issue on my 3g and the first gen iphone since the 3.1 update. I hope Apple gets a fix soon.

  295. Todd Says:

16 GB iPhone 3G w/ 3.1 – getting the random shutdown about once a day.

Unrelated but equally irritating is the problem with phone running hot and losing battery – tracked that down to maybe having an email stuck in my “send” box for my Exchange account. I deleted and readded that email account and it seems to have solved that problem.

  296. RonaldR Says:

I have the same issues too! iPhone 3G 8Gb. Restore is useless. Maybe a clean install, but then again: who wants to do that if it is not for sure that the problem is gone afterwards?! Not really keen on re-configuring my emails and phone (again!) Hope this is recognized as a bug and that there will be a fix shortly!

  297. Michael Says:

    iPhone 3G w/ 3.1 software – same problem. Was jailbroken a long time ago w/ 2.0 software.

  298. Michael Says:

    3G 16GB 3.1

Happens at least once a day for no appearent reason.

  299. Matteus Says:

My phone is just gone coo-coo, have the same problems with random shutdowns, but now every 15 min i get the sms ringtone, without acctually gettig an text message… really Poltergeist´y

  300. Uzb3k Says:

Same here, iPhone 3g 16gb, 3.1 firmware, started shutting down randomly, happened twice today. Really annoying, doesn’t turn on unless you hold both buttons for 10 seconds

  301. STL BOB Says:

DOES APPLE EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THIS IS A PROBLEM?????? MY SON IS ABOUT TO UPGRADE FROM A 3G TO A 3GS AND IS NOW LOOKING AT A BLACKBERRY – WE HAVE 2 3G PHONES, BOTH WITH THE LOCK UP PROBLEM – MY 3GS IS FINE

  302. Tcyulfa Says:

iPhone 3g 16GB 3.1 firmware. No jailbreak. Usually freezes once a day.

  303. Nick Says:

sent a text locked iphone went to go look at an app about 3 sec after locking iphone saw a flash double clicked home button hoping to get the slide to unlock then blacked out no response for anything, turn off, turn on, plug in no response for anything iphone 3g 3.1 first time happening today happend twice in 3 hours

  304. Nick Says:

i read what uzb3k said held for ten seconds turned it back on thx

  305. Joker123 Says:

just spoke to applecare. They do not acknoledge a software issure. Told me it was 100% a hardware issure and they are going to have me send it back for repair. I know it is not a hardware issure, 3 others in the office are having the same problem since the update. Guess everyone with a 3g is going to have to send it in for repair

  306. Chino Romero Says:

First gen iPod touch 32 GB. After the upgrade, crashes every day and battery dead after 10 minutes of use (game, web browsing, e-mail reading) When I reset and turn on again the date and hour ar gone, and the battery is gone, then it shuts down again. After 5 or 6 hours reports batery half full.

  307. Justyn Smith Says:

iPhone 3G – Install of 3.1 / restore previous backup.

    Random freezes (comatose).

  308. Lisa Mason Says:

My iphone totally shuts down since the 3.1 update. I have to do a reset by holding the power button and menu key. to get it to power back on.

  309. Andy Says:

(271 Andy) I turned off auto lock (and have been careful to put it to sleep after each time I use it) to see if going to sleep via auto lock was causing it but it still went into a coma today. I had put it to sleep after using it and went back to use it and found it comatose (which through the usual looong restart it came back again). So auto lock might cause it sometimes but it is not the only way it happens.

Didn’t have this (the coma thing) at all before 3.1. Battery life is getting worse again too (which is did have some, if not all, of the time on 3.0.1) Arrrgh. No jailbreak, no unlocking, just legit stuff. Seems the type and severity of problems going to 3.0 then to 3.0.1 and then to 3.1 have gotten progressively worse. SO much for the Apple image of clean well prepared products before release.

As an IT guy at a small company with a bunch of company bought iPhones with people who depend on them for phone and email all day and they come to us when things go bad on the iPhone, I’m just waiting for the ones who went ahead with the update to start complaining. We told them to wait but as a guinea pig I’m ticked off and some went ahead despite our warning so it’s only a matter of time. As much as I like the iPhone I’m thinking more and more it’s ‘not ready for the enterprise’… Where to next? Crackberry, Palm? Android doesn’t seem ready for enterprise but hopefully will get there.

I’m spoiled by what the iPhone can be but I’m pissed at what it turns out to be all too often. It’s only as good as it’s worst day.

  310. chris Says:

I have an iphone 3G which I upgraded yesterday to firmware 3.1. The phone has stopped working 3 times. The only way I can make a call is to shutdown the phone and restart. I will try to restore but according to other posts this does not help!

  311. Stef Says:

My iphone screen went blank but was still making noises in the background like someone above and I was told to hold the home button and the off button at the sametime and this re-boots your iphone – it WORKED but its happened again but only its not re-booting after I’ve held down home & off for over 10sec and there are no noises in the background – apple should have sorted these glitches out before putting into mass production

  312. Jarod Says:

I updated to the 3.1 software on my 3G and have been experiencing random shutdowns as well. Hopefully apple will identify this and fix soon…its rather frustrating to keep rebooting. At the same time it is a relief to see its just not my phone, I thought I might have water damage or something more sinister wrong with my phone.

  313. SouthC Says:

Yep, same here. Only seems to lock up when it’s gone to sleep. Never while I’m actually using the device.

  314. BritW Says:

I have the iphone 3g s Downloaded the 3.1 software update. Since then I’ve had numerous problems: When I open mail- I can see my new messages/messages- but once I try and click on one to view- mail shuts down immediately. Sometimes this shutdown just goes right to the homescreen and other times it shuts the phone down completely. I’ve also had the same problem with many of my applications.

Also- phone’s been randomly freezing/shutting down. Sometimes in the middle of a call- other times just while I’m listening to music.

I’ve tried to reboot several times with no results. Did a restore 2 days ago- and the problems seemed to be gone- but only for a few hours. Now the problems seem like they are even worse.

Getting so frustrated- especially because I use my iphone for work purposes. Anxiously awaiting a bug fix update from apple.

  315. Ryan Says:

I have a white 16gb 3G running 3.1 and mine as gone dead on me twice when trying to wake from sleep. The only way to wake it back up is to hold the home and power key at the same time. Never had this problem before 3.1.

  316. Shari Says:

I have the 3G 8gb and am experiencing all of the common problems listed above. VERY frustrating! I use my iphone as my personal and business phone so I am on it MANY MANY hours a day and it goes into the Black Coma at least 15+ times a day for me. It does come back in about 10 minutes. It is “somewhat” comforting to know it’s not just me – but I sure hope Apple owns up to it and fixes this issue SOON!!

  317. Jon Says:

I have a 8GB 3G on 3.1 and it started doing this within the past week or so. It didn’t seem to start immediately after going to 3.1. I’m not sure what triggers it but occassionally it seems like it shuts down completely and holding the power and home buttons doesn’t do anything. In about 10 minutes, I see the lovely white apple telling me it’s done napping and it’s back to work. Luckily this hasn’t happened when I really need something on the phone so I’m not being too critical about it yet.

  318. Jason P Says:

Yes…count me in as well. Iphone 3G 16gig, OS 3.1. Happens about 3 times a day!

  319. Cfreak Says:

Happening here too. Iphone 3G 8GB… upgraded to 3.1 and it was fine for a week. Now I get a freeze and a shutoff after almost every call. I’m going to the Apple store after work today. Doesn’t sound like they are going to be able to do much about it. I’ve already reloaded to factory defaults.

I thought about seeing if they’d give me a whole new phone since I’ve had other issues with this one (I have Apple Care) but doesn’t sound like that’s going to help. Anyone have this issue with a brand new phone?

  320. Nathan Allen Says:

I am having this issue. Waited to upgrade till last week because I didn’t want to lose the tethering hack. I wanted to use the app rearranger in iTunes so I went ahead and did the upgrade. Ever since then my phone has shut down / froze multiple times a day.

  321. Christian French Says:

The same problem as most people here, althouhg mine manifests itself by not allowing me to unlock the phone, the swipe to unlock bar comes up but will not move or allow me to unlock.Tha, and freezing a lot.

SORT IT OUT APPLE, YOU’RE WORSE THAN MICROSOFT RECENTLY

  322. Erin Says:

I had three freezes on my iPhone 3g after downloading the 3.1 software. no reason for it, just random. I held down the home button and lock buttons together for about a minute and it restarted it.

  323. Graham Says:

    Same as Erin above me.

What does it say, that I’m number 323 for a post only a few days old?

    Sad.

  324. Kary Says:

I have an older 3G iPhone with the 3S software upgrade. I experienced a shutdown this evening while driving and the phone was not being used. As others have stated, I couldn’t get the phone to turn on. Finally when I got home, I connected it to my computer. I heard sounds coming from the phone as if it were taking pictures. Finally, after about 3 or 4 minutes, the phone magically rebooted and is currently fine. However, I know I’m only hours or days away from a recurrence. Hopefully they’ll fix soon!

  325. Dustin Says:

I am having similar problems. I have a 3G with 3.1 software. Today alone I have had 1 each of a freeze and lockup. This is the 3rd and 4th time these have happened in the last week.

  326. Scott Says:

Mr. Jobs, I suggest you fire yourself immediately and replace yourself with someone who knows how to regression test his company’s software before doing a general release! Seriously, the dude/dudette that you hired to manage this release needs to look for a job outside the technology world.

  327. Scott Says:

By the way, has Apple said ANYTHING about this error and when they expect it to be resolved?

  328. Nathan Duvall Says:

Ditto here. 16gb 3g iPhone that randomly goes black and cannot wake unless I force a hard reboot. Happens at least 3x a day now, very frustrating.

I actually sent mine into Apple thinking it was the phone (before I saw this post) and now the new phone is doing this as well… common denominator? The 3.1 upgrade. I never had this problem on any of my precious iPhones before 3.1. Quick Apple, give us a fix!!!

  329. Jim Hawley Says:

I have a 16gb 3G and just had the same problem. Was looking at a text message one minute, the next my phone was black. Would not turn on and no charge indicator when plugged in. It already had a full charge anyway. I finally found a post that said to toggle the mute switch twice and then hold the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears. That worked for now.

I had just upgraded to 3.1OS from 3.0 over the weekend to try and fix a similar problem. Over the weekend my phone decided to just start rebooting every 5 or 10 minutes. Nice.

  330. Benson Says:

My 32GB 3GS just blacked out and has the v3.1 OS which I upraded just last week. This never happened to me before when I was on 3.0. Is there a more reliable fix to this bug?

  331. Mike Schenck Says:

3G iPhone (8Gigs) purchased in June. Got the 3.1 update the day it was released. Seemed fine for a while, but at least once in each of the last 7 days the phone has failed to respond to either the top button, or the home button after I’ve locked it. Only holding both buttons to reboot the phone wakes it up. Some of the days I’ve had two or more episodes.

I spoke with two friends with 3G iPhones tonight. On who applied the 3.1 update and one who hadn’t. Should be no surprise the friend with the update has been having the same issues as me, and the one without the update has been fine.

  332. Ratul Das Says:

My iphone getsfrozen and when I ask itunes to restre it.it tells me that I have to updte it.I dont want to update my iphone i just want to rstore it,

  333. Carl Says:

    16gb iPhone 3G UK on O2.

my phone has also been randomly shutting down as well. Usually after receiving a text when the screen goes blank after the alert goes (if i dont get it in time).

Battery life also seems a bit worse than before. Had one instance of the phone not charging when plugged in.

no problems at all prior to 3.1

  334. Jason Says:

iphone 3G 16GB — recent installation of 3.1 but no problem for a few days, and in the last 24 hours it has ‘crashed’ 6 times. Usually it is in sleep mode for a short time and works fine, but after an hour or so, it won’t come out of the mode. In fact, I have to reset by pushing both buttons simultaneously to get it to reboot. Then it works for a short time again.

  335. Erich Says:

iPhone 3G 16GB, installed 3.1 and began to have the problem where I couldn’t get the phone to wake up after going into standby. Only way to get it back on is to reset the phone with power and home key. this also adds to the very poor battery life as of 3.1 It’s full chareged at 8:00AM and by 1:00PM is dying – phone is just sitting on my desk and gets the occassional call and quick internet browse. I charge it back up at the office and it will need another charge by 9:00PM almost completely dead – 10% warning and beyond. Phone also freezes when I try to slide to answer a call – can’t answer! Have to press the home key to make the slide action respond again. What is going on?! Phone was EXCELLENT during 3.0 and 3.0.1

  336. Joe Says:

Yep, this has been happening to me as well. Seemingly random shutoffs since upgrading to 3.1 . At first like everyone else I thought it was a button on my phone dying, but I guess I am happy to hear it is just a major PITA bug. Fix it soon please!!!!

    fyi- 3g 16gb, standard upgrade

  337. Jack h Says:

Since 3.1 upgrade my 3G phone has frozen in sleep mode several times. Each time the phone has been unresponsive for about 5 minutes, then it decides to wake up. Once this happened when I had to make a critical call. I wanted to toss the phone on the ground I was so frustrated. At the end of the day, it’s supposed to work as a phone — forget all of the programs. When it doesn’t even work as a phone, what good is it? I need a reliable phone, so I’m currently shopping for a “dumb” phone that actually works.

  338. Waynegrape Says:

I have a 2G, unlocked and jailbroken, which was rock solid under 2.2. Now with 3.1 the battery life has been HALVED and Mail.app crashes constantly.

I have not experienced other problems. Things were slow until I cleared the Safari cache with SBSettings.

  339. Nathan Says:

iPhone 3G 8GB, installed 3.1 and began to suddenly power off. Could only get phone to power back on by holding down the power and home key for 10 seconds. Has happened about every other day since the 3.1 upgrade.

  340. DGH Says:

Same as everyone else. 3.1 upgrade yesterday and today shut down randomly during when closing a game app. Would not restart until I received a text about 20 minutes later….as if it never shut down!

  341. Paul Says:

I upgraded to 3.1 on 9/21. Got the no no phone/text thing for the 1st time today. The phone still worked, I was using iPod off and on all morning. Tried to make a call at 2:30pm. It let me go into contacts and make the call but would not actually dial the number. Turning off and on pulled in a bunch of VM, texts, & emails. The earliest one from 10:30am, so it was without a phone connection for 4 hours. Refurbed iPhone 3G, 16GB, never jailbroken.

  342. Jess Says:

Yeah I updated my iPhone 3G to 3.1. First day it was fine, till the next morning. I listened to my music all morning long and it wasnt till the afternoon that I noticed my battery was still full (when i listen to it all morning usually it goes down a little) and i had full bars(I rarley ever get full bars when i’m at home). So I turned it off and right away it went back on and off again by itself. When i turned it back on my battery was less than half and my phone exploded with texts, voicemails and email. I took it to the apple store and they said their was nothing wrong but they still gave me a refurbished one. I updated my new (refurbished) phone (like an idiot) and i’m still having the same problems. This is NOT COOL!!

  343. Alexia Says:

iPhone 3G, 8GB upgraded to 3.1 on 9/18 and phone completely shut down. I had to restore about 5 times and after 7 hours the phone came back to life. The next day, I could’nt make any phone calls. Since 9/22, my phone will not even start, and freezes on apple logo. If I’m lucky, the phone freezes on the slide to unlock screen. If I’m extremely lucky, the phone works for about 5 minutes and freezes again. I have restored the phone numerous times and it does not help. When plugging it into the computer I noticed that it gets worse. If anyone has any idea on how to fix this, please let me know !!

  344. Daniel Says:

I have to say, it’s quite funny to see iPhone users experiencing the same things that plague windows mobile users (although you can bet the apple fan boys will be able to come up with a million reasons under the sun why its justified).

However its slightly less funnier because I have an iPhone myself and am getting 3-4 freezes a week :( . This is why I stopped using windows mobile dammit!

  345. Ladislav Soukup Says:

The same problem… iPhone 3G 16GB. iPhone is freezing randomly… most of the freezes was when switching from one WiFi AP to another as I moving on the street (every day on my way home). But sometimes it also freezes when downloading emails and I manually lock it with sleep button.

BTW: did you noticed, that when the iPhone is frozen it can “receive” calls and SMS? ok, not receive, but it seems (to the caller) like you are not answering. BUT the biggest problem is, that after reboot, these calls are NOT in call history and SMS are NOT in messages app! But sender will receive “successfully delivered notification” (if his phone supports it – so he/she must not have iPhone). And this is worst – You may miss call or SMS and you don’t know about it!

Personally, I did downgrade back to 3.0.1… I used this guide: http://www.redmondpie.com/downgrade-iphone-3.1-to-3.0.1/

  346. Mikegar Says:

I’m running 3.1 on my 3G, and I get random shut downs. Did a backup restore, reinstalled 3.1, still no luck.

  347. sam Says:

3.1 on my 16g 3g random shut off on it’s own.

  348. Bin75 Says:

I am getting to the point where just the sight of that GD apple pisses me off from so much rebooting. I hate apple for this, I have missed so many business calls, people ask “what kind of phone do you have?” I used to be proud to say iPhone. Have to go to the drug store to buy a prepaid disposable phone with monochrome display- laugh but it makes and receives calls!

  349. Dan Says:

Installed 3.1 day after it was released and have experienced two random shutdowns so far. Had to do a reset to get it going again. Never had this probablem before installin 3.1

  350. Cameron Says:

16GB 3G with 3.1. Same problem. Headed to Apple store tomorrow.

  351. Viv Says:

My iPhone 3G has been having random shutdowns after the 3.1 update also. It was happening once every other day, but today I’ve had 2 shutdowns (the second time was right after I had just finished recharging it). The only way to start it up again is to do a hard reset. I have never had any problems prior to the 3.1 update. All the shutdowns began the day after I updated.

  352. kevork Says:

my fone turns off about every 5 minutes im so pissed

  353. Morbid Fellow Says:

Same thing here with Phone 3G, those random shutdowns started right after update to 3.1 , after that it has happen sometimes several times a day, sometimes few days without freeze… im dissappointed to Apples slow reaction to thiskind of critical bug. Think I’m gonna get my old Nokia back from trashcan….

  354. Jim Says:

Same problem with 3G 8GB. Locks up and I have to reboot 3 or 4 times every day. Each day gets worse instead of better.

  355. Brett Egusa Says:

I have a 3gs 32gb iphone. I upgraded to 3.1 last weekend and did not have any issues until yesterday. Now when I pull up my email it will try and connect then crash. I deleted the email acct and added it back but it did not help. battery life seems to have gotten worse as well.

  356. Dan Says:

Same thing here – resetting twice a day.

    -Dan

  357. Chris Says:

Having all the same issues. Will the new update that is scheduled for today clean some of this mess up?

  358. Jeff Says:

Same problem – 3G, never jailbroken, upgraded to 3.1 and the phone started doing the coma thing about once a day. The only way to get it to turn on is to hold down the power and home keys for a while. I’ve noticed that the phone is really warm when this happens – much warmer than I ever felt it before the upgrade.

  359. Bradley Says:

3G, never jailbroken, same as most, if not everyone, talking. Mine has just done this in the last little bit, so I’m guessing the 3.1 upgrade did it. It randomly shuts down out of nowhere.

  360. Lucas Axel Says:

I´ve just discovered that the 3.1 update has setted all my 5 e-mails accounts to automatic push. I changed this setting to manual and my battery life improved a lot. I have not noticed any crash since then. Is this the magic solution for our troubles???

  361. mistshoo Says:

Quotting “3D’s method” to resolve the problem

“I was having these problems but I seemed to have fixed them.

Try the following: * Power off the iPhone as normal * Remove the SIM card * Power on the iPhone * Use the phone (unlock it, faff about for a bit with it saying ‘No SIM’) * Power off the iPhone as normal * Re-insert the SIM * Power on the iPhone * See what happens.

Hope this helps people – it’s working really smoothly for me since I did this.”

  362. wcferr01 Says:

After installing 3.1 on 3G, my phone crashes almost every time it goes to sleep. Comes back to life after 5 minutes or so and is fine until it goes back to sleep. Super frustrating.

  363. Matt Says:

same thing here. iphone 3g white 16gb. does it to me after restore from back up, clean restore, even a swap. i am also getting the shutdowns and additionally the super hot battery

  364. lmicky Says:

This is so annoying and frustrating. It always crashes when I really need it

  365. petepark Says:

I visited Genius Bar two times for this reason. At the first time, the staff said that the system would be jammed and it would be ok after reseting and then she reset to the factory default with 3.1. I restored my data from iTunes, but there had frozen several times per day.

I visited Genius Bar again, and another staff reset it again as a factory default, and she recommended me not to restore from the old data but install apps and sync data as a new phone. Unfortunately, when I came back home, just 30min after, my iPhone was frozen again though any application or data was not installed and syncronized.

This problem must be not from the compatibility with other application, but from the operating system 3.1.

I’ll visit Genius Bar again this Sunday.

    My iPhone spec.: 3G 16G

  366. PamelaD Says:

Mine started sticking in sleep mode a few days ago. It just started up for some reason. Happened like 4 times now, scared me lol. I haven’t tried a restore or anything as of yet.

  367. Chanie Says:

I have a 3G, and my phone recently began to just shut off randomly, usually while texting. Ironically it usually happens when I really NEED something someone is emailing or texting me. I’ve discovered that holding down the power and home buttons as if to take a screencap turns it back on, but that doesn’t always work and this is very frustrating. I didn’t initially connect it to the software update and not that I’m happy that so many people are having issues but I’m glad it’s not just me! I thought I did something really awful to my phone!

My 3G 16GB shut down within 5 mins after the update. When it turned back on it kept taking snapshots of my screeen. Well it turned off a 3rd time and I can’t seem to get it back on. I’m Seriously going to smash this phone. GRRRRR!!!

  370. Brittany Says:

My iphone has been randomly freezing since that update as well!!! I thought it was my phone, but now that I see others are having this problem- it needs to be fixed!

  371. Russ Says:

I have the 3g and after updating to 3.1 my phone goes to sleep and cannot be awakened without a hard reboot at least 4 times a day. When this coma occurs it starts the drain on the battery. As long as I keep the phone awake the battery life is fine. When I realize the phone is locked up and do a hard reboot it comes back on with significantly less charge left.

  372. Martin Says:

I get the coma about 2-3 times a day.

The phone will be in standby, when I click it to use it nothing happens. Switching between silent/ringer – nothing happens. I tried calling the phone from house phone – I can hear the it is connecting on the house phone but the iPhone makes no sound or displays no image. Connecting it to MBP running iTunes 9.0.1 while it is in coma has no effect. Nothing on iPhone, looks like no device is connected on MBP.

    PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!!

  373. Luther Blissett Says:

I also had this problem quite often after updating my iPhone 3g firmware to 3.1. I read somewhere the suggestion that this problem might be related to the Notifications feature. I turned Notifications off altogether (in the Settings panel) and haven’t had the coma reoccur since then (no comas for about 3 days, where I was getting about 3 a day before). Not sure if this is just a coincidence, but you might want to try it.

  374. Jay-R Says:

Mine has been doing this for the past 3 days now after updating to 3.1 on Monday. It’s really frustrating, seeing as how restoring the phone doesn’t work, I won’t even bother doing it. I hope Apple fixes this soon! Oh and another thing that happens is that my text messages do not get through, it’ll tell that it has been sent but when I ask the person if they got it, nothing…

I’ve got a feeling that the bug may have something to do with ‘Push’, the reason being is that whenever my phone shuts off randomly, after I reboot I all of a sudden get e-mails. That’s my observation..

  375. pkillian Says:

Seriously, try this.. you have nothing to loose:

Power off Remove the sim Power on Try to make a call (get the No Sim failure message) Power off Insert Sim Power on

See if your problem is solved. It worked for me. No more coma and I’ll be damned if the phone doesn’t seem to run a little faster. (could just be me)

  376. Max Says:

@pkillian tried the SIM remove/reset call etc.. And didn’t work for me.

I have a 16GB 3GS and have been restarting almost 8 times per day. Got the phone brand new with 3.1 installed and have tried a restore and other suggested fixes all to no avail.

  377. Mortimer Says:

Ever since adding picture/video SMS, my 16GB 3G won’t launch the iPod app. It crashes every time. The extraordinarily long reboot after the upgrade scared me, ant it now seems I may have had very good reason to be.

  378. Noah Says:

Ever since 3.1 update to my 3g, happens multiple times daily

  379. JZ Says:

Have a 3G and since updating to 3.1 phone freezes more and more enough (3 times today!) – mainly occurs when phone is locked & then just never responded again. Battery is now burning through quick as hell…

Thinking about restoring…but hoping Apple will fix shortly.

  380. Matatouille Says:

I have a 3G & also having random shutdowns 3-4 times a day. I see people are having problems with battery life too, but so far mine hasn’t changed. Let’s hope Apple hurrys w/a fix ASAP

  381. Jo Santana Says:

It’s incredible Apple didn’t release a fix for that yet. I believe that this should be one of the most popular topics of this blog. I hope Apple do something soon ’bout it. It’s really annoying…

It’s so weird to see Apple releasing a product with so much problems, just like iTunes 9, that received an update days ago to fix a big list of problems.

  382. Ralph Says:

Having same issue with 3.1 and iPhone 3G (not S), but only in last few days, since installing updated iTunes 9.0.1.8.

    1) go to check iphone and it doesn’t respond 2) try to call iphone and it doesn’t respond to calls either, so for all intents it appears to have switched itslef off 3) Plugging into power doesn’t help 4) Holding Home button doesn’t help 5) Holding power button doesn’t respond 6) Can reset by holding both buttons at once 7) Plugging into PC seems to bring it back to life without manually resetting

  383. Ralph Says:

Another issue, which may be totally unrelated to the above, but has also only occurred since updating iTunes to 9.0.1.8, so… Genius no longer works in iTunes, even after updating Genius. Luckliy it still works directly from the iPhone though.

  384. Rachel Says:

I have a 3G and I’m having the same issue, 2-3 times a day. I will go to use my phone and it won’t turn on, and I have to do a hard restart. My husband has a 3GS and hasn’t had any problems. Sooo annoying! Someone please let me know if there is a fix for this.

  385. Mike Says:

This is total BS. Apple needs to fix this problem now. My Iphone 3G comas a couple times every day. FIX THIS NOW Apple or customers will start going to Google Phone fast.

  386. Barry Says:

My 8gb 3G iPhone has been freezing up 2-3 times per day since updating to 3.1. The battery life has been horrible and after speaking to Apple they told me they’d send me a replace phone or I can go to an Apple store to get a replacement. Each person I spoke with said they’d never heard of this happening…

  387. Michael* Says:

Updating to iPhone 3g 8GB OS 3.1 i’ve began to have even more sudden frezes of the phone since 3.0. And also safari just stops working and doesn’t respond like it’s corrupt. Should I go back to the phone company and ask for a new phone?

Or should I just restore it back to 3.0. Do The problems vanish?

    Pls respond. Thanks.

  388. George Says:

Well since the 3.1 update windows xp won’t recognise my iPhone 16gig 3g when I plug it in it freezes vibrates then crashes have restored 3 times to no avail I hope apple gets their head out of their back side and fixes this soon.

  389. Terry Says:

I’d been holding off on upgrading to 3.1–although not because of any bugs that I knew of–until yesterday, when I got a text from ATT saying that MMS was finally available, but I’d need to upgrade to 3.1 first.

So I did, and surprisingly the upgrade went quite smoothly–even fast! But probably not more than a couple hours after that, the phone PERMANENTLY shut down! And I haven’t been able to get it working since!

Ever since OS 3.0, the upgrade path has been a very rocky one for me. And just when I thought they’d figured things out, this happens! WTF??

  390. Flo Says:

Since updating my ipod 3G has crashed and needed to be reset twice. Both times the phone was in standby mode and than just died.

I never had this problem prior to the update and this last time I was almost late to work since I use my phone as an alarm. Also, at first the phone would not even recognize a hard reset while plugged into itunes.

This sucks – needs to be fixed.

  391. Mitch Says:

I have a 3G and am having the phone lockup also. Any body have a fix?

  392. Threster Says:

    same problem, random shutdowns

  393. Mike Says:

I have a 3G 8gb and just installed the new update and am getting random freezes as well. the phone will go into sleep/standby mode and then lock up and stay in that mode. neither button gets it to turn back on so i have to do a reset to get the phone back on. this has happened about 15 times in the past 24 hours.

  394. tom Says:

I updated my iphone 3gs from software version 3.0.1 to 3.1 and a week later my iphone suddenly shutdown after i pressed the sleep button. 2 day after that my iphone still wont reboot or turn back on. itunes wont even recognize it. I went to apple, and they told me to try restoring it, but as my iphone can no longer be recognized by itunes i cannot do that. Apple will help me no longer. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

  395. Ben Says:

Yep me too… since 3.1 on my 3G. I have had random shutdowns. First was yesterday. Pulled out my phone to use it was completely black no response…. it felt warm to the touch too which was unusual. I then tried to wake it up and no luck. I had to do the 2 button reset and then it started up. But my battery showed it was almost empty. This was strange because it normally shows near full. Then today I had the same problem. brought it out to check the web but black screen no response. Had to reset it again… hope this isn’t a new ‘feature’ apple doesn’t want to fix…

  396. Johan Says:

This happens to me a couple of times every day since the upgrade to os 3.1 (with my 3G). At first I thought the phone was shutting itself down since the screen turned blank and pushing the buttons had no effect. However, I have come to realize that the phone only hangs for a few minutes. If I wait 3-4 minutes, I can press a button and the phone comes back from standby as normal. At first I thought it was related to the new push notification system, so I turned it off (Fring was the only app that seemed to be using it), but no effect. This is pretty frustrating and completely unexpected from Apple, IMO.

  397. Marcia D Says:

Yes. 3G 16G White, would freeze up. Even though it would do it rather often, but it would unfreeze by itself in a matter of seconds so I was able to deal with it and not complain too much. However, this new update did a real number on my iPhone with podcasts and the music. Podcasts were downloading out of order and would suddenly “fast-forward” so everything would sound like Alvin & Chipmonks. There would be nothing-absolutely nothing-I could do to fix it. Music played well for about 20 minutes and then start stuttering between starts/stops every 5-10 seconds. Again, there is absolutely nothing, not one darn thing I could do to fix: turn off/on, reboot, restore, etc. Once it started doing that, I would have to put it down and walk away. Tonight, I finally had enough and restored to factory settings and then used an older back-up from late July for the restoration. The music seems to be working fine, now. I’ve had it on for almost 45 minutes and its fine. Haven’t tried the podcasts but I didn’t have any trouble till mid-Sep so I think it should be okay. Won’t trust the upgrades till I hear/read that these things have been fixed.

  398. AL Says:

I’m having the same issue with my 16GB White 3G. Oddly enough, using the jailbroken 3.1 has been working better than the original. I seem to run into issues after installing winterboard though. So my advice is to try jailbreaking your phone with 3.1 and DON’t install winterboard. My phone has been working for about 5 hours or so.

  399. iphone user Says:

I have an iphone 3g running 3.1, black, 8g, and ever since updating to the latest O/S in order to get the picture messaging, my phone has locked up like a dead-brick twice.

The only solution has been to hold the top button and the circle-button together for 5-6 seconds, to get it to reset. It is otherwise non-responsive.

While the reset has been successful both times, the fact that it has happened 2x in 3 days, and never happened prior to software update, has me concerned.

Hopefully apple issues a fix for this problem, as it seems widespread, and definitely tied to the 3.1 version and the 3G hardware.

  400. Ryan Says:

I have an iPhone 3G 8 GB Black and I upgraded to 3.1 from 3.0.1 on 9/26 and so far I’ve frozen twice. The only way to get it back is through a hard reset.

  401. r-man Says:

I have 8gig 3g iphone that ever since 3.1 upgrade is acting up, first of all battery life went down the drain since upgrade and where it use to last me on average between 24-36 hours with one charge now it is more like 10-12 hours. Also every day or two it will completely lockup and get hot, no button sequence can bring it back up, but after left alone for 1-2 hours(until it gets cool on touch) and then plug in the wall charger it will start charging but battery is completely drained even know sometimes it was less than two hours after fully charged. At first I was thinking it maybe bad battery but after reading all this I am not sure anymore. Anyway, now I have my wife’s old Nokia flip phone fully charged and in my laptop case so when iphone goes completely berserk I just switch the sim card. Done it this morning again….uuughhhrrrrr… Apple needs to get another update to fix this update FAST!!!!

  402. brooks Says:

My 8g 3G ran perfectly until 3.1. Crash Crash Crash!

I received a brand-new iPhone3G from an Atlanta area Apple store today. After speaking with Support over the phone yesterday – they decided that I had a “hardware issue”. With a little nudging, I was able to get the Genius to admit that 3G phones have a temp sensor that can read faulty with the 3.1 update. Hence all the crashing…

Not sure if I should be upset or just laugh… but either way I have a pristine new iPhone (joy)

FYI – the “new” phone came with 3.0.1 – lol.

  403. Gary Says:

I installed 3.1 two weeks ago. Since then I have random shutdowns almost every day. Eventually the phone would come back on, but not because anything I did to it. This morning it shutdown and is still shutdown after an hour. Also, I have to recharge the battery 2 times a day since installing 3.1

  404. Jim Jilla Says:

I posted a few days back (above) with serious problems. They actually got worse toward the end of last week. HOWEVER, I have had no problems for the last 24hrs (knock on wood).

Has anyone else seen improvement in the problems/performance of their iphone?

  405. amarfresh Says:

lots of freezing with black screen for me. especially after losing signal. ever since 3.1.

  406. Willid Says:

Ok well I was having the same coma problem but I turned off notifcations and well have not had one in a few days and battery is been better well that’s me hope it helps helped me and a couple friend with same thing post and see if itworks for you guys as well

  407. TonyStark1914 Says:

Yup it happens to me whenever i have an app running while the phone goes idle. This is both with and without the JB 3.1 (yes – ahem – you CAN JB 3.1 and it works quite nicely other than this damn problem). I tried it both ways – same issue. Glad its not just me!

  408. Drew Says:

jailbroken 8GB iphone 3G 3.1 , today i have had the freezing with black screen twice. really annoying , hope for a fix soon !

  409. TonyStark1914 Says:

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I just saw this on another BLOG. I did it and it SEEMS to work. I let the phone go to “sleep” while using a 3rd party app and it actually DID NOT FREEZE!! I only did it twice . . but good luck people . . .

  410. Legend Says:

This has happened to me twice since upgrading to 3.1 on my iPhone 3G. I hope they fix this soon.

  411. JackBlue Says:

My iphone 3G keeps freezing up after 3.1 update, sometimes i hear it make a sound as the e-mail came in and it would not wake up to view it. It does it at least once in a day sometimes 3 to 4 times…..soooo annoying…this really remids me of my old compaq laptop that i used to have

  412. Kevin Ross Says:

Same issue here freezing 3 to 4 times a day I am missing calls and people are getting message only. Have to do a force restart. I did a clean install of 3.1 and reset it up as if it was new still same problem!!

  413. Delmaurio Walker Says:

I am sick of this. Since updating my iphone 3G to 3.1 on the day of it’s release The phone locks up and freezes on average 10+ times a day and remains unresponsive about 3-5 minutes. Apple needs to fix this immediately. Another side effect of 3.1 is my battery life has dramatically suffered.

  414. tboneh08 Says:

Me and my Girlfriend both have the iPhone 3G and since updating to 3.1 it’s been a nightmare! The phones randomly freeze up, or completely shut off without notice. I have a White 16GB and I can’t load any Apps at all, except the ones that came with the phone (Phone, Messages, Mail, iPod, Cal, etc.). Her phone got stuck the other day and every time she’d press a button (home or sleep/wake) it would take a screenshot. I really hope they get this straightened out quick!

  415. AL Says:

Okay my phone started freezing again. The only thing I could gather from the apple forums is to turn wifi off. Has anyone tried this? I’ve been doing for the day and it seems to be working… but I always speak too soon. =T

  416. Riley Says:

woo. I am really glad im not the only one experiencingthis problem. It shuts down on me and i just have to push the home and sleep button at the same time. And a couple times i will restart it and it does nothing. just stays black. hopefully going to apple store this weekend to get a solution. until then ill have to blow the dust off my old razr.

  417. Rose Says:

I have the iPhone 3G and it’s been interesting reading some of these comments. My phone blacked out tonight and after a hard reset (pressing the sleep/wake and home button at the same time), it solved the problem. I got this phone back in May because of a software defect on my first iPhone and used to have issues with the old phone blacking out sometimes, but plugging it into the charger would fix it. Tried it with this one when it happened tonight, but it didn’t work so I temporarily freaked until I did the hard reset. I will definitely be writing Apple about this.

My battery life has been worse since the 3.1 update as well; sometimes it’s fine on juice, or so it would seem, and then boom! no battery life left. What’s the point of doing a beta if you don’t fix the bugs before you release it?!?!?

  418. Chris Says:

Same problems as everyone else with a 3G. Sad to see 400+ posts with no comment on a fix thus far.

  419. Ryan Syed Says:

Alright, I Dont know If anyone has tried this or not but I’m so fed up with it that I’m about to Jail Break my Iphone 3g atleast it wont drop calls and i’ll get my calls and texts

  420. Laurel Says:

Same here. I have a 3G, did the update yesterday, and this morning my phone started not waking up after being in sleep mode. The only thing I’ve been able to do to get the phone to come back on is reboot (home plus power button). Very annoying. Also, my service has been fluctuating ridiculously, and I frequently get the “searching…” instead of bars of signal, which it never did before. So that’s new. Does Apple read this? They should.

  421. Alex Nava Says:

Same problem here. My iPhone 3G (8GB) after 3.1 update started freezing randomly up to 4 5 times a day…no way to have it start again…just wait..once more than half hour…I think I’ll go back to Nokia and Symbian…

  422. Jeff Says:

Same problem here as everyone. New 3G 8 for a week…worked perfectly until the 3.1 “downgrade.” Shutdown 5 times in an hour yesterday for no reason. Hard reset works but is costing me time and money. Come on Apple, either fix this or let us go back to OS 3!!

  423. Jordan Says:

Nothing to add except ‘Me too!’. I suppose there is nothing to do but wait patiently for the next software downgrade and hope that fixes it.

  424. Anya Says:

Yep, me too, it now won’t open iPod – it just throws me out time and time again. Also phone is just a lot slower and less responsive on keyboard / etc. Very annoying indeed!

  425. Joe R Says:

See this is a big problem. 3G 16gig never had this problem until the 3.1 installed. So far, hard reset works; haven’t reinstalled. Frustrating!

  426. Preston Says:

iPhone 3G 16GB was working fine for about two or three hours, then i had to reset it. After i reset it, it wouldn’t read the SIM card anymore!

  427. Tyler Says:

Same problem. Iphone 3G 8GB will randomly shut down. happened for the first time yesterday. Three times now since the update for pic messaging. Apple, where are you?!!! Are you even working on a fix? This is a HUGE inconvenience.

  428. Chalam Says:

Just wanted to add myself to the long list of sufferers. My phone went to “Coma” about 10 times since 3.1 update. 3G, 8Gb, AT&T. Thinking of terminating contract.

  429. Brady Says:

Okay I was just at the apple store and they said Apple IS currently working on a fix. The issues I am having are all the same as yours (phone shutting down, no signal all of a sudden, search never completing in App Store, iTunes, YouTube, etc, along with other strange problems) and at this point, all we can do is do a complete restore of our iPhones, continue to restart them if the problems persist, and then wait for a solution

  430. JasonHears Says:

I have an 8Gb 3G. Upgraded to 3.1 and the new carrier setup for MMS. Black screen freezes started later that day. The first time, my phone was frozen for about 10 minutes. Then it woke up from its coma and 3 txt messages came in at once. The texts were timestamped correctly, which was weird.

I’ve had it freeze multiple times, and have had it both come back after a few minutes, as well as have to reboot the phone manually. This is getting to be really frustrating!

  431. Jeff Jarvis Says:

Did Apple give any timeframe on how long the “fix” will take to get to everybody?

  432. craig Says:

me too – iphone freezes up and requires hard reset about every other day for past 3-4 weeks. genius bar said it was a software issue and reinstalled 3.1 about 2 weeks ago. no help.

as VERIZON puts it, my iphone too often is in “paperweight mode”.

Apple – HELP, otherwise Verizon will….

  433. rikdaddy Says:

Mine has been buggy since the upgrade to 3.1 software. It blacks out randomly with no way to turn it back on except to reset the phone. Before, my phone would black out and would turn back on if I got a text message or plugged it into a power source. Not this new black out. I took it to the Apple store and they gave me another 3G, but it’s doing the same thing. I started from scratch with this one too. Sometimes it will be on, but nothing works so I have to shut it down and restart. Often times it will get stuck on a certain screen and whether I press the top or bottom button, it just keeps taking screen captures and nothing else. Very frustrating.

  434. Matt Says:

Happens to me ALL THE TIME! Today I counted 8 times!! each time either requires a hard reset, or to wait about 10 minutes for it to wake up, and even then there’s no guarantee. I’ve done a full restore twice to no avail. I’ve been running 3.1 since the day it was launched and I had zero problems before then, and nothing but problems after. I’m running a 16GB 3G and have never been frustrated with it until this update. I’ve never done anything like try to jailbreak it, but since this, I’ve very seriously reconsidered. FIX THIS NOW! CRITICAL.

  435. James Says:

i had the random shut down problem. finally i gave in and went back to OS 3.01 and no problems since. the annoying thing was having to reconfigure all personal settings and i lost my pictures. would have been easier if apple offered the backward install. instead i had to read the jailbreak boards to figure out how to go backwards.

  436. Barbara Says:

My iPhone 3G also has had black outs since the 3.1 upgrade, this time it won’t wake up. Went to Apple store, they can’t see me until tomorrow, Apple guy said it might have gotten wet, or dropped, said there was nothing wrong with the 3.1 upgrade. I am not amused.

  437. Jacob Says:

Yeah, I have been having random freezes too since I upgraded to OS 3.1. And oddly, they all happened around six o clock. My phone either goes black or freezes at the last screen. Then it gets warm. So, I have to wait till the battery dies, then I can recharge it and use it till it freezes again. So annoying! I’m taking it in to Apple to tomorrow.

  438. Guill Says:

I get the freeze/lock up problem several times a day since the 3.1 upgrade. Can we go back to the previous OS? Problem is you miss a lot of calls because when it locks up you don’t notice till you have to use the phone.

  439. Snapperhead Says:

Same problem. 16gig 3G. Locks up, battery life bad all after 3.1 update. Let’s fix it apple.

  440. woodsnwind Says:

Coma Mode, how great a description is that. Only works with life support. phone will freeze if not connected to computer. ignores home button, ignores reboot, ignores sleep time setting. battery seems fine, but can’t get calls unless plugged into computer. tossed and reloaded itunes 9. been broken for the most part since update. i can’t afford MMS, so this is a real pisser.

  441. James Says:

My wife and I are havein the same freakin problem! Someone that is smarter than me needs to forward this link to Apple…

  442. Kellygeorge Says:

Same here. Hopefully a fix comes around soon.

  443. Scott Says:

My 3G has been going coma since 3.1 update. Holding the home and lock buttons gets it back up. My wife just updated her 3G to 3.1 and now has the same problem. Sucks.

  444. Anthony Says:

My iphone is randomly shutting down ever since the 3.1 update. This is BULL!

  445. roger Says:

Random coma mode. iphone will not wake up. If I wait 5-10 minutes, it will wake up. Force restart is the only other options.

    Fix it apple!!

  446. Iain Says:

My iPhone locks up whenever I select the camera. Hard reset gets the phone going again.

  447. Josh Says:

Count me in on this. My phone is locking up several times a day. It would sometimes not receive calls too. I had friends who told me that they called me six times, but my phone never rang once. It isn’t until I restart my phone that all my voicemails and notifications come flooding into my phone. My phone was perfectly fine before this update so I know it isn’t a hardware problem.

  448. Joyce Says:

Well, my phone froze or something halfway through the update. It never finished. I tried again and this time it told me I HAD TO RESTORE IT. Well of course that didn’t work. I tried 3 computers with same error “Can’t restore Iphone code 13″. I finally gave up and called apple, I am still under warranty so they are going to fix it or send me another phone. If they send you and new one before you send them your old one, then they have to put a hold on your credit card for the price of the phone. They will release the hold after they get your old phone. I opt out of that and went the long route and send mine in first and wait for them to send it back to me. I hate this new update bug.

  449. donkey Says:

My phone has the same problem, does anyone here downgrade the firmware back to 3.0.1 and the problem goes away? I am thinking of downgrade mine to 3.0.1 to see if it is solved.

  450. Katie Says:

I’m having this same problem. Is there any way to fix it? It’s only seen since I did the update.

  451. Greg Says:

Apple did rewrite the firmware for the iPhone’s 3G chipset. This should enable Iphone using multible 3G bands. Sadly its somehow causing the freezing and especially the phone troubles users are having after updating to 3.1. Maybe they wont admit for a few more days before a new update release. If you still use the 3.0.1… Keep it! If you have updated to 3.1 turn off the 3G service and you’ll fine. Sure you will be left with edge and wifi service only but no more missing calls, shut downs and even better battery life you’ll get in trade… and wait for the fix.

  452. btate Says:

Chalk another one up in the loss column. My wife and I both have iPhones. I have a 3gs and have had no issues, hers is the 3g (black 8gb) and it’s shut down on her about 3 times now since updating on last Friday. She doesn’t sync very often but in anticipation of MMS we went ahead and updated her (i updated mine the day of the 3.1 release.. and again.. have had no shut down issues).

  453. Alexei Says:

Horrible problems with Iphone. Goes to blank black screen once or twice every day, have to hard reset each time. Apps constantly crashing or flat out refusing to run. Lose 3G internet connection constantly, despite having full bars and 3G displayed. Did a full restore to no avail. So pissed i’ve been paying $100 a month for over a year for such horrible service.

    3.1 3G 16GB user from NYC

  454. Arman Says:

Same problem here. Very annoying. Apple has to see the problem after so many people having the same issue…

  455. Franchi Says:

same issue here. Apple is just killing itself with this. How a company can be proud of a device with so many issues? I’ve been a firm defender of apple till now.

    3.13G 16GB user from Spain

  456. Jose Says:

i installed 3.1 yesterday on iphone 3g. it died today, nothing can wake it up. looking for a hammer to destroy it right now, will definitely enjoy seeing iphone pieces flying all over. :)

  457. Vince Says:

Same thing. I am on swap out #4 now. No one at the genius bar acted like they knew what I was talking about.

  458. Steve E Miller Says:

My 16gb 3G randomly shuts off too, ever since 3.1 Very annoying.

  459. Madhav Says:

Its really frustating… my iphone 3G sleeps & goes black randomly , 3-4 times a day..this is happening since i upgraded to OS 3.1. please help if anyone has clue.

  460. Will Says:

I have an iphone 3g and im on the 3.1 software. Ever since ive been running that software, my phone on average 1 or 2 times a day, will randomly shut down for approximently 5-10 minutes. While this happens i am not able to turn on or off the phone along with light up the screen by hitting any of the buttons. When my phone turns back on, it usually shows the normal start up screen with the white apple and black backround, or it will go back to the last screen on was on before it shut off. When it goes back to the last displayed screen it will take about 50 pictures of that frozen screen and then just stop and work normally again. I called apple and they suggested to restore its original settings and redownload 3.1. From what ive read it doesnt seem to help the situation. The only solution of now is to swap iphones or wait for a bug fix.

  461. Eric Says:

This is happening to me as well. About 3 times a day now. Annoying!

  462. pc Says:

i have a 16gb iphone 3g. since downloading 3.1 on sunday, it has shut off randomly 5 times. the last time was about 5 hours ago and i still have not been able to get it to turn back on.

  463. Mark Says:

Just got an email from apple…submitted bug report on the random freezes.. they finally responded that this is now a known problem and might report is being merged with others and apple engineers are looking into correcting the problem…

  464. Marissa Greenlar Says:

iPhone 3G, downloaded 3.1 on Sunday- my phone has since frozen over 6 times. Each time, when frozen it will not “wake” back up for at least 3-5minutes. When it does (only when prompted by continuous hitting of both power and home button)it will take at least 4 or 5 screen shots of the frozen screen. Eventually it lets me power it off and reboot. I have pictures of it frozen on the lock screen, on twitter, and on my recent call list (if that helps).

  465. tj Says:

Yep. 3G 16gb. Happened 3 or 4 times since update. It just shuts off out of the blue and becomes unresponsive for a minute or two. Eventually I can get the phone to reboot.

    3.11 asap?

  466. winmo Says:

    GET A WINDOWS PHONE!

    just kidding.

    not really… HTC LEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  467. Buck Says:

Chalk up another one….1-2 hours after 3G 16gb 3.1 upgrade same blackout occurring everyday at least twice or 3x and just as everyone describes…I’m smelling something and it stinks! (class action – people in numbers are frightening) Apple better get their act together fast and have a fix fast…they also better own up to the error.

  468. Scott Says:

Had my one year old 16gb 3g replaced by Apple for a hardware problem two days before 3.1 came out. In the year I had it I only had to reset it once or twice. Brand new phone, updated to 3.1. Battery life now is horrible and has frozen 10-15 times. Returned to the Not-So-Genius bar and the diagnostics had not recorded ANY of the lockups. Step-up any day Apple.

  469. Dom Says:

    hey all,

same problem here, my iphone freezes randomly after update.

  470. Ronnie Says:

Mine has been freezing up over the last couple days. Only after I am finished texting and return to my home screen. Then it freezes. Think it’s related to the recent mms update.

Love the ability to send photo through text but would rather not have the feature if it makes the phone freeze. It’s frozen now and cant get it to un-freeze. Might have to restore it.

  471. Jeff Says:

I gave up. After numerous “comas” and loss of productivity, I went to AT&T and demanded a new phone (under warranty). Was sent to the Apple store and the phone was replaced. This one came with 3.1 on it, so we will see what happens. So many problems from Apple, you have to wonder why they just won’t admit and error and fix it!! Guy at the Apple store said the correct fix is to go into DFU mode. I opted out for a new phone. Sick of messing with it.

  472. Leslie Says:

I own 2x iPhone 3G’s and I have upgraded both units to OS 3.1. (SUPER BIG MISTAKE)

The one phone I use for work (in that I am on it 24/7/365) and the WiFi has stopped working (dose not authenticate to AP – and yes I did re-flash AP)Battery Life *** and has even switched off a few times (Hard reboot needed) – I did a Factory reset and re-flashed unit. And NO IT STILL ***…

The 2nd phone my wife uses (in that it makes calls every now and again) the WiFi works, it has not rebooted itself and the Battery Life looks to be ok…

NOW WHAT THE F… IS GOING ON WITH THE SOFTWARE… NOTE: Both iPhone are 3G/16Gb units.

APPLE PLEASE REPLACE OS 3.1 GIVE US 3.X (BUGFIX-MAX) ;-)

  473. Jim Says:

I own an iPhone 3G 16 Gb. Never had this problem until I upgraded to 3.1. Now it randomly freezes when in power save mode w/no visible screen. I think it happens more often if I shut the display off with the power button. Requires a hard reset which actually sounds like it’s shutting off the unit (with headphones I can hear a pop) and then it will power on with the next try. Seems to be a problem re-lighting the display.

  474. Greg Says:

3G updated to 3.1 phone freezes randomly and will brick for a few minutes until coming back to life. Worse, i’ll notice a lack of activity for a few hours. I reboot to find i’ve missed a dozen text and email message and who knows if any calls.

  475. Steph Says:

    Coma and very very sluggish

  476. Maha Says:

    @Dragonfly post #104

The 3.1 update was a simple carrier setting which didn’t involve installing additional software. The 3.0 update works almost perfectly on the 3G but ever since the 3G had picture messaging enabled it hasn’t worked. The hardware handled the software just fine before 3.1

    iPhone 3G 8GB

  477. Tim Says:

3G 16gb. Locked a few hours after 3.1 update. Has locked once or twice a day ever since. Just found it locked ready to burn a hole in my hand it was so hot. Battery depleted. WTF?!

  478. Jim P Says:

I went through these random lockups fro 3 months and tried all of the suggestions in the hope that it was a “fixable” software problem. I finally made an appointment at an Apple store genius bar, explained that I was having these issues, and was given an exchange unit without even turning on my old unit. The problem, finally, has gone away.

This appears to be a hardware issue and not a software one. My family bought four 3GS’s at the same time and mine was the only one with the glitch. The good news is that an exchange takes ten minutes… with “Mobile Me” I had all of my contacts and calender back in another 5, and my next “sync” at home restored everything except “ereader”.

  479. leo Says:

Hi. I might be the only one here a bit relieved after reading that im not the only one with the problem. I bought my iphone a week ago, the next day I dropped it shiat! I was so sad because just after I picked it up I tried to unlock it and it was laggy as hell. I have tried everything turning it off, reseting etc and the same thing keeps happening.. Its only laggy when I dont use it for a while, turn it off good, 1 hr later again. So, after reading this I know that the problem was not that I dropped it but the 3.1 update. Its only a great coincidence that only after I dropped it I started noticing that. I hope there is a fix soon! btw Is there a way to go back to the 3.0 version without unlocking? Any of you guys feel like that happens only when getting out, walking a bit and let some time pass by?

  480. leo Says:

btw mine has never shut down. Only laggy when unlocking and after that I have laggy access to applications and when switching through my apps’ pages

  481. leo Says:

JimP I think you are wrong. Isn’t it an extreme rare coincidence that there are 500 people who have had the exact same problem ONLY AFTER updating to 3.1? It is obvious that the problem is in the software and not the hardware. Before this, I don’t doubt there were some lemons out there, like yours, that presented similar problems independently of the software.

  482. Gerry Says:

Since 3.1 I have had nothing but problems, iPhone 3G Rogers service. Freezing, not receiving calls, and the latest scenario, it just started vibrating, hard reboot would not stop, I need to push menu button and shut down button for about 15 sec before I could shut down and restart. Apple better fix this soon or they may loose me as a customer, I cannot afford such poor reliability.

  483. yuenski Says:

hey same here i actually went to the apple store yesturday and they restored my phone as a new phone and still freezes like when i put it to sleep it usually goes dead

  484. benny Says:

agreed to all of you guys man! iphone is a good phone but it always have problems with the freezing problem !!1 kind of drives me insane like everyday i have to restart like more than 10 times

  485. Pedro Vera Says:

I am getting random freezes on my iPhone 3G on a daily basis, very annoying when I rely on it as my wake up alarm. Battery life is simply horrible, and this is a phone I barely use. How is it possible that I average less than a short call per day, and 40 minutes listening to music while I fall asleep and it eats the battery every day?

  486. leo Says:

it looks like turning off 3g and push and notifications will solve the problem temporarily. Its been 5 hours since I did that and no problems so far. Try it and tell me if it works. If it is as easy as that, Apple’s customer service sucks . Why can’t they tell everyone through itunes or through the webpage this solution while they send the new patch? F..k them

  487. leo Says:

also turn of wifi when you are not using it, specially if you go out. Maybe we can experiment and discard some of this solutions to see what’s the exact problem? Is it 3g? or is it wifi? Share please!

  488. Blue Says:

Two months and two phones later–still the same problems…battery drain, overheating, and random freezes. I thought I was getting an apple, and instead I got a lemon.

  489. Ezra Says:

Ever since I’ve updated to 3.1 i’ve been getting the same issues as many others. The phone would just lock on a blank screen. Many times its after i turn the screen off or when it sleeps. When I try to wake it, it stays black and freezes. At one point I took it to the gym to listen to music while I workout. It froze again on me so I rebooted it by holding the home key and power. Once the Apple logo came up it stayed there, it didnt load up completely. My phone was literally stuck like that for 2 hours. I finally was able to reset it to factory settings and restore it. However it still locks up on the black screen. So far its happened about 6 x’s in one day. I’m hoping Apple gets word of this and comes up with a fix for it. Its a major pain.

  490. Dean Atkinson Says:

White 16 Gig Iphone 3G working perfectly until 3.1 upgrade. Then at least 3 times a day the phone will refuse to come out of sleep and a two (Home/On) button restart is needed, the phone will not start from just the ‘ON’ button. MAJOR PAIN indeed, Apple should treat this as a PRIORITY FIX.

  491. ridA-X Says:

3GS 32GB and the display is not responding serals times. The Buttons works perfect but sometimes when i get a call or i play games the display does not response. Then I press the power button so that the device locks an then i must unlock it and the display response…

  492. ridA-X Says:

    SUPPLEMENT:

I Have no other Problems not Auto Reboot or other Problems The F**KING Display only freezes sometimes it works after 5 seconds sometimes 1-2 minutes…

  493. Mel64 Says:

I have a 3G about 16 months old. I have only had the “not waking up” problem once about three weeks ago and twice yesterday. I couldn’t reboot but I only had to wait a few minutes and it came back on where I left it, like nothing had happened. Tonight the screen came on when a call came in and I could slide to answer but the slider stuck in the right side position and could not answer the phone.

  494. psandak Says:

I am also having the 3.1 freezing issue. It happens most often when I either connect or disconnect headphones/earbuds (I use the Apple iPhone earbuds and noise reduction headphone), but it has happened to me three times in the last two hours while using the NPR app over my office WiFi. (NOTE: office wifi does have multiple access points and I lose the NPR signal when I move from one access point to another.

I have also had the freezing issue crop up when I press the power button on top of the iPhone and do not do anything else; the screen turns on, the power save timer times out and the screen turns off again and then it freezes.

  495. Firestorm Says:

we had some problems with the 3gs – not sure if someone already posted a solution like this, but here ya go: http://www.firestormcs.com/technology/itunes-9-and-my-iphone/

  496. Melissa Says:

This has happened to me too. Only after the last update. All I can do is hold the home and shut down button until it resets. It’s completely frustrating!

  497. Jeryl Says:

Since I updated to 3.1, every few days, my phone will not dial out and will not recv calls unless I reboot. Today it happened twice. I have experienced the same thing with emails as well.

Why is taking Apple so long to fix our problems?

  498. Donkey Says:

I don’t know if I had fixed my iphone coma problem but for the pass 3 days it did not go to a coma mode anymore which it did many time prior to the fix. Here is what I did: 1. Using Itune to restore my iphone to the original stage just like I first bought it from the store. (problem still exist if you do a complete fully restore) No apps, music, photo, or email restored. 2. Manually sync apps. 3. Manually sync music. 4. Manually sync photo. 5. Re-setting my wifi 6. MANUALLY setting my emails.

I have the iphone 3G 8GB, not too sure if this fixed the problem 100% but so far so good. My phone has not complain once yet. maybe I lucked out.

  499. Tonie Putter Says:

iPhone 3G freezing after 3.1 update: happens regularly, and invariably seems to involve the camera in my case. That is, when I do get it ‘back’ this is often accompanied by a camera shutter sound; sometimes a small black rectangle in bottom left corner, but every time the post-freeze recovery leaves me with all my pictures erased.

The most frustrating aspect of all this is Apple’s Spinx-like silence and their complete inaccessibility for any form of “support” (Sic!).

After 30 years of loyalty to Apple products, it still amazes me how we faithfuls forgive the company…

  500. Josh Says:

Same 3.1 issue here. My Windows phone never had this problem. Steve Jobs is a ****.

  501. Pat Says:

I just updated my iphone to 3.1 and 5.5 with carrier and my phone totally died, comatose, unresponsive. I read the information posted here by others, which was very helpful. I held down the sleep mode button for at least 3 minutes then connected to my apple computer and the itunes-connection display appeared and I had to restore to factory settings, then resync and retrieve all of my information. i recharged the phone and had some minor problems this morning with it shutting down randomly but now seems ok. Every time I update my phone, it freezes and I need to restore to factory settings, then update the iphone with my information…takes about 3 hours, getting to be a pro. Ready to visit apple store and get a new phone.

  502. Bassem Says:

I have an Iphone 3g 16gb and my wife has the 8gb. ever since 3.1 I am having a problem on both phones where they intermittently stop receiving or making calls without showing any sign or freezing. I’ll notice when I go to make a call to anyone and it just says calling… but never rings. I then reboot my phone and am able to make calls again. when this happens, the phone isn’t actually frozen, I’m able to use apps, surf internet, check emails, just can’t successfully place a call. It seems to be happening more and more frequently.

  503. Carlui Says:

THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!!! I hate the fact that I live day in and day out relying on my iPhone 3G – notes, emails, contacts, GPS, .mac connection UGH!!! All critical for me to conduct business efficiently. 3.1 update has brought me nothing but chaos!!! This is absurd!!!! Can’t believe the 10 mile scroll I had to go through to get to bottom of this page—so many people experiencing the same issues-shut downs, inoperable for 5-15 minutes, phone not ringing during incoming call(had my husband call me one instance to see if that worked) sometimes after hard shutdown and sudden revival, pressing the home button goes crazy taking pictures of screen!?!? APPLE HELP US ALL!!!!!! It’s been going on since 9/16/2009 for some people, I sadly updated my phone on 9/26 and since then it’s been a major bummer. I’ve been forced to conduct work from home when most needed to be mobile.

  504. orcapod Says:

I have the iPhone 3G 8G and I am also experiencing this problem. About three times a day my iPhone will randomly shut down and go black, and the only way to revive it is the hold both reset buttons for 10 seconds or more. Sometimes this doesn’t even work… all you can do is wait a few minutes and try again.

VERY FRUSTRATING! Com’on Apple, hop on this.

  505. Jeff Jarvis Says:

Anyone who is still under warranty I would highly suggest go to an Apple Store and demand a new phone that already has 3.1 preinstalled on it. That is the only way you will correct it. 3.1 “downgrade” through itunes messed up the hardware.

  506. Jenn Says:

Yes these problems just have started since installing 3.1 on my iphone 3G, 16GB. First time I tried updating got an error in itunes and shut down. Got it installed last week and ever since have been getting the blackouts at least once a day. I’ve noticed the black outs mostly after I’ve replied to a text and waiting for a response. I get the ding with the response then “black out”. If I just wait it out, without touching home button or slee/wake button to reset, it will come back on. When I hold the wake/sleep button and home button it sometimes comes back on doing screen shots and seems to be stuck in camera mode. Hopefully they will straighten this bug out ASAP!

  507. min Says:

3g. locks up once 3.1 was installed. I have to hard reboot. Did it 3 times today (it’s only 4pm)…

  508. Aneleatic Says:

Same as everyone else. Numerous freezes throughout the day since 3.1. Fix it!

  509. Pat Says:

I forgot to mention that after installing 3.1, I also experienced blackouts. Then I would press the home button and the camera would take pictures of the desktop. Then finally the phone totally died. Since I restored everything, it has been fine all day with no major problems. The only problem that I still have is with some of my apps I reinstalled. They are not working so I need to reinstall them again. I decided the next time they have an update, I’m bringing the iphone to the apple store and they can update for me and see what I go through each and every time.. I love the phone but this is such a convenience, especially for my business.

  510. S.L. Says:

I got the same random shutdown and battery problems after upgrading to 3.1 on my 8GB 3G. However, the problems seem to be gone after I turn off the bluetooth. I haven’t had a shutdown in 24 hours and battery life is much better.

  511. suresh dahal Says:

Please ! anyone solve my Problem I have an iphone 2g. Last night I was able to upgrade to 3.1 (custom firmware) after that i reboot my device all my previous app got installed. After that i installed activatemms2g and after the installation finished; it asked me to reboot. I rebooted, but it stuck in the boot screen nothing happens. I have windows vista on my PC , Please help. My email : suresh_dahal12@yahoo.com

  512. Eduardus PT Says:

Hi Suresh dahal… I Had the same problem… place the phone in dfu mode conect it to itunes and restore the software!

  513. Eduardus PT Says:

I also have a 3g iphone… And the problems reported here happen to me also, blcoked iphone, black screen the works! With my 2g nothing happened even after upgraded to 3.1! Beawere of the actobatemms2g… it locks the phone! If such happens in the 2g… simply place the phone in dfu mode (press power and cancel button for 10 sec, release power keeping cancel button pushed for 10 sec and then release it). The conect it and restore it with itunes…

  514. bunkerbob Says:

after 3.1 upgrade of 3GS phone, outgoing calls fail, incoming calls go to voice mail, text messages don’t go in either direction, despite display showing 5 bars and “3G” indicator. Sometimes a reboot or reseating SIM card will get things working briefly, but not for long. Have tried all the usual resets, restores, upgrading iTunes, etc… with no change. Went to AT&T store yesterday, and they were definitely aware of the problem and suggested as a temporary workaround switching the 3G mode off. That solved the problem instantly, and phone has worked fine for 24 hours with 3G disabled. AT&T rep suggested I take phone to Apple store 30 miles away for a real fix, but based on this discussion board I’m going to hold off on doing that until I see people posting that the Genius’s have figured this out.

  515. Jarod Says:

Ever since updating to 3.1 my girlfriend gets similar issues as other people. Go to wake up the phone and nothing happens. Restart it and… starts fine (usually). The difference is that it seems to happen much more than 2-3 times a day. More like 20-30. Although she probably uses it for texting more than the average person. This all started when I gave here my phone after I updated to the 3GS. I haven’t had any problems with mine doing this.

Hopefully they will come out with something soon to fix the issue.

  516. leo Says:

Listen I found a temporal solution. Turn off WIFI and you wont have any of those problems. 3G on , off has nothing to do. Everytime I turn on WIFI to check something it starts lagging. Someon else do it and tell me if its good for you too. I know it sucks not having wifi but at least you can use the phone and 3g internet

  517. Andrew Says:

    Im having same problem!!!

  518. O'Neal Elliott Says:

I have the iPhone 3g and all was fine after upgrading to 3.1 from 3.0 for a couple of weeks but yesterday and today (about this same time) my phone gets warm to the touch and does not respond to shutdown/power on. It seemed to me as though some process was running that made it warm but did not allow interruptions so I couldn’t wake it from the process. Yesterday it took a few hours of trying to force a shutdown before it actually responded, today it responded rather quickly but I think I caught it not to far in to this blackout mode it got in to. Up until the 3.1 update I did not have anything like this happen.

  519. bunkerbob Says:

re: Leo’s “Turn off WIFI and you wont have any of those problems. 3G on , off has nothing to do”. I tested that a few times, and in my case anyway, changing the Wifi setting didn’t do anything. Only turning off 3G worked.

  520. Ryan Says:

I have had my iphone for a few months and then just the other day i dropped it, but it wasnt hard and it didnt crack or even scratch the screen but when i tried turning it on the screen goes white, the hard reset (which is holding the sleep and home button for 10 seconds) worked temporarily but when i try lock my iphone by hitting the button on the top it turns the iphone off. WTF do i do. please help

  521. Mario Ortiz Says:

I never have wifi on and I still have issues with unexpected shutdowns. This sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

  522. Mario Ortiz Says:

    iphone 3g 8gig

  523. John Says:

Factory unlocked 16GB 3G v 3.1 Not jailbroken..I was playing music and after the song finished, the phone went into “coma” so I had to reset it. Also an issue since the 3.0 update which is “No Service” issue (though after a restart it gets full signal) and huge number of undeceived calls even though the phone would show full signal when others are trying to call me and fail. Hope the Calls issue is resolved soon.

  524. Eduardus PT Says:

well…. Sometimes my 3g locks… but since i turned off wifi,3g and autolock… it stoped! Anyway,,, I have an iphone with no wifi, 3g the works… APPLE SUCKS!

  525. Eugenia Says:

Mine keeps locking too. I have version 3.0.1. I was refusing to upgrade to 3.1 because I heard about the freezes and shut-downs… but I have the same problem (3 bad freezes in the last month). I was JUST trying to take a photo while on a call and it froze on the camera screen. I shut it down but when I restarted it it became totally sluggish… I would touch something and it´d take a couple minutes to respond. Very frustrating. And I still have 22 months on the contract!!!

  526. lilyonna Says:

I can not leave a website that I pulled up after a freeze and no matter what button I push it will not change….this will hopefully be corrected.

  527. AJB Says:

iphone 3G 8gb model. no problem prior to 3.1 battery life remains the same as prior. maybe even better. similar issues with freezing on the lock screen. typically home+hold reset works. haven’t restored to factory settings because that’s a bull**** excuse. screen froze on me once, when i finally got it to unfreeze without a reboot, pressing either the home or the hold button caused it to take a screen shot. neither button was physically sticking, but obviously 3.1 was not beta tested enough with the physical 3G model because this is a joke.

  528. Sean Says:

Since upgrading to the MMS software (3.1.1?) my iPhone is freezing about once a day while locked, and I can’t wake it up. The only thing I can do is hold the buttons down until it restarts. Also, since the update, my battery seems like it is draining like CRAZY! What gives?

  529. Lindsey Says:

It has shut off completely on me 3 times today and wouldn’t turn back on without a full reset. I’ve only owned my 3G about a week and a half. So frustrated!

  530. MichaelR Says:

Sometimes it goes a day without shutting-off; then it will shut-off 3 or 4 times in the same hour. Horribly frustrated right now. I loved the iphone b/c it DID NOT shut down or reset randomly (like my blackberry Bold)! Now I’m in the same situation. Very irritating.

  531. Chaz Says:

8gb iPhone 3g worked fine untill update, now it turns off when I put it on standby, as soon as you hit the top buttonits as if you unplug the battery, I also had problems updating it, it failed the update, sending my phone into recovery mode or some bs, it had a screen that told me to connect it to iTunes, all iTunes did was say” iTunes has discovered an iPhone in recovery mode, you must restore it before continuing” too bad everytime I tried to restore it, the restore failed, I tried 50 times no joke , then the next day it just worked… What a pos, they better fix this soon, cuz my phone turns off like 3 times a day minimum, I might expect that from a cheap samsung or somthing, but not an iPhone that I pay out the *** for

  532. Carlos Gandini Says:

IPhone 3G 16Gb – Same problem. Many times during the day have to restart my iphone…

  533. Greg B Says:

I read the discussion boards after my phone starting locking up. Yes I am on OS 3.1.1 – I live outside an area with 3G so I have had it turned off. I have some push applications. Have not turned them off yet, I tried the least intrusive fix I found. I turned Auto-Lock off yesterday. I did all the things I did Friday, which caused the phone to be hard re-booted 10-15 times. I have not had it lock up at all.

On another note, my WiFI appears to have a time to live of 30 minutes. Then I have to renew the lease. This is really annoying when scrolling through a message board.

  534. John B. Says:

Guys, listen, turn off Bluetooth if you have the random shutdown problem.

  535. iphoneness Says:

for me its that my phone turns off then only tunrs on when i plug it into a computer, but now it wont turn on even then… >.< im thinking off switching phones since its happend so many times

  536. Frank C Says:

I phone 3g 16gig. same problem as everyone else. have to do hard reset 10+ times a day. went to apple store. tech said he has heard of the problem before, then proceeds to tell me i have water damage and that’s why it keeps shutting down. he said he has heard of the problem before and “don’t believe the posts on the internet, that’s why its called the UNOFFICIAL webblog.” i proceeded to ask for manager. manager says its water damage and she never heard of anyone having same problem. tech now says he never said he heard of the same problem. i asked them to at least acknowledge there is a problem. they wouldn’t and proceeded to throw me out of the store!!! APPLE READ THIS!!! YOUR LOSING CUSTOMERS AND YOUR NOT HOLDING UP TO YOUR REPUTATION OF BUILDING THE RIGHT PRODUCT THE FIRST TIME AROUND!! I guess it doesn’t matter that I have spent over $4,000 in apple products. VERY DISSATISFIED!! I use this phone for the “portfolio live” app, which assists in my day trading. I need this!! Please fix!!

  537. Frank C Says:

…by the way, i treat my iphone like a small child…no water damage…I called them liars and the tech couldn’t even admit he told me earlier about the problem with other people too. Apparently Apple has even told their managers not to acknowledge the issue. CRAZY!!

  538. Michael K Says:

I have 2G and the freezes and lock-ups are killing me!! WHERE’S THE FIX?!!

  539. Roy B Says:

Same problem, random shutdowns. Only thing that works is home button plus power button, hold for 10 seconds or more soemtimes, wait 2 minutes for phone to reboot/reset and everything works again. My battery bar is also doing wierd things, its not moving after i reset the phone and charge to full, it stays full charged and I dont know when Im running out of power. Hope they make an update.

  540. John D Says:

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH ROY B!! The 10 second power+home thing works like a charm.

  541. kathy K Says:

Ever since I updated to 3.1 have had problems making and receiving calls. Phone shows a call being placed , says its “ringing” , screen gets darker and nothing happens. The receiver does not receive the signal but my phone registers it as a placed call. Only way to make a call is to then completely power down and restart the phone. Also text messages are taking aprox 6 hours to be sent if they do make it. My calendar no longer syncs either. My phone was never jail broken, its pure apple. All my family we have 4 new Iphones are also having same problems ever since we upgraded, no problems previous 3 months of ownership.

  542. Laura Says:

My husband and I both got the 3G on the same day and for some reason, mine seems to have these problems as well. I don’t remember when the sudden shut downs started happening though…before or after the 3.1 upgrade. He doesn’t have any problems, but mine does weird things. For example, I plugged it in to charge last night and when I unplugged it this morning, it had shut down during the night. I haven’t had it shut down while receiving a phone call yet, but texting, yes, doing mail, yes, and using safari, yes. And sometimes I’ll pull it out of it’s holster to make a call and it is shut down. The only way I can get it turned back on is to do a reboot! It is really pissing me off. Apple needs to fix this issue. I love my iphone–except for this (and the fact that you can’t send an email to a group in your contacts without having to put each address in individually)

  543. John Says:

Hold off on the 3.1.1 if at all possible. There is a serious issue found on this release with Voice Mail and apparently the only fix is to replace with a completely new phone! Visual VM gets screwed up to the point that you don’t even know if people leave you VM’s. It messes the phone up so bad that the phone’s visual VM cannot be fixed ultimately requiring you to replace the phone. I have several colleagues of mine who have already had to do this.

  544. Michelle Says:

I have a 3G and I have had my phone has been randomly shutting down since Friday…2-3 times a day. When it shuts down, the phone gets really hot. When I restart, it acts as though nothing was wrong. Very annoying. I upgraded to the 3.1 version 2 weeks ago. I have a phone case. Not sure if that info helps but since it got really hot when it shuts down, i remove the case for a bit to help it cool down.

  545. Andrew Says:

The random blackout has been happening with my 3G also. It is very frustrating not only for me, but for the people who are trying to call me, leaving voicemails that I don’t see until the phone is restarted with the home+power sequence, etc. Hope this gets fixed ASAP!

  546. Misty Says:

Same here, except my phone went black for over 6 hours last night. Then all of a sudden it started dinging like I was getting texts like crazy. Screen is still black. When ppl call or text it will ring and ding, but my screen is completely black. It acts like it is just unplugged from the rest of the phone or something. I have an appointment with Apple today to take it in. I have tried soft reset and reset through iTunes. Can’t think of anything else to do. VERY FRUSTRATING!!

  547. Nieko Says:

Had the same problem with my phone going to sleep and then not being able to recover.. Had to constantly check my phone to see if it was still on, very annoying and I missed a lot of important calls because of it. Only way for me to recover from this was to Force restart (hold HOME+Power button for 10 seconds). I’ve turned OFF WIFI AND BLUE TOOTH and have had no more problems for the last 3 days. Seems to be a temporary fix. Hope this helps..

  548. Louie Says:

Having problem with my iPhone 3Gs 16 GB the Home Screen icons are displaying twice their normal size – I need help on how to reduce them back to size.

  549. HScott Says:

Since upgrade, phone shuts off 6 times a day or more. Did restore to factory settings, still happened. Went to Apple store, got a new phone. Still happening. Won’t power back on normally, have to hard reset it AND it takes about a minute to power back on.

  550. Twizler Says:

This just happened to me. I was using it, put it down for about 30 seconds, picked it up, and pressing any buttons didn’t bring the screen back. Turning vibrate on and off made no vibrate-notification, holding the sleep button did nothing, and neither did plugging it in. after about 2 minutes of having my iPhone 3G plugged in, I started holding the sleep button (longer than usual to make it turn on). Then I saw a white screen for about 2 seconds, and then it took me to the lock screen. No Apple logo or anything. Just the lock screen.

  551. CBramucci Says:

This has plagued me with my 2g since I got it, but after upgrading to 3.1, it started happening almost constantly. Did the clean and restore, removed a bunch of apps to no availe. Here is what worked for me: I set Auto-lock (in General Settings) to NEVER! Rough on battery life, but as long as I don’t let it go to sleep it seems to be holding up.

  552. Kirstin Says:

Same, same, more of the same. Have 3G. Goes black with no warning. Sometimes for an hour or more. Hard reset sometimes starts it, sometimes doesn’t. Hope they get a fix soon!

  553. Rick Says:

Wife and I both have 3G phones she purchased hers about 9 months ago I purchased mine about 6 months ago. We were both doing okay with the phones until 3.1 update was completed. Since then both of our phones randomly would stop receiving calls and/or we couldn’t make any outgoing calls. We went to the Apple Store yesterday and Apple replaced both phones saying that we may even have the same problem with the replacements. If that happened we would have to revert to the “Edge” network until a new firmware was released. My wife had problems with her new phone within 10 minutes of leaving the store but now it seems that it is working okay for now. Unfortunately I can’t get my wifi connection to work correctly – to put it bluntly this sucks. We have no home phone so we both rely on our Iphones.

  554. Matt Says:

Same thing has happened to my 3G phone. Took it to the Apple Store and they replaced the phone but the new one is doing it too. The guy at the Apple Store said it is a software issue and Apple is working on it. Hope it is soon.

  555. Rickstir66 Says:

just to throw my hat in the ring….3g iphone with 3.1. After i upgraded to 3,1 my trusty iphone started freezing randomly….very frustrated never had issues before with my iphone

  556. Steve Johnson Says:

Me thinks several MicroSoft developers have gone over to Apple and have written iPhone 3.1. Sure behaves like their work.

  557. Lee Says:

Grrrrr, seems there is alot of people having this problem then! My phone freezes around 8 times everyday. Had an iphone since day one and never had an issue. Real let down…

  558. Dustin Says:

3G iPhone 16gb w/ 3.1 software. I cannot get into the iPod function at all every time I try, it just loads into iPod for 2-3 seconds and then just shoots me back to the home screen. Grr…

  559. Arthur Wyatt Says:

SG iPhone 16GB, OS 3.1 – I’ve been having the freezing problem for a while now, with switching off and then on sometimes helping. Now it’s frozen during a shutdown, displaying the apple logo, and is completely nonresponsive. I’m currently waiting for the battery to run out.

If it comes back I’ll try the reset and running without any apps.

  560. leo Says:

YEEEEEEEEEES! My iphone is cureeeeed!!! I read it 1000 times but I never did it. I went to apple store they told me to restore it BUT manually sync everything. No problems in 3 days since that.:)

  561. King pi Says:

My phone happens to freeze few days after upgrade to 3.1. If it happens, I can wake it up unless i plug it to my pc or press both power and home button for 10s. Charging by charger doesn’t work. I guess itunes or sync helps to wake it up. Freezing is not obviously at the beginning but it does 2~3 times a day now. It is so annoying. Restore doesn’t help neither:(

  562. DRL Granite Bay Says:

All the same freezing symptoms. Sometimes when it freezes, when it comes back I have a photo of the wallpaper with the time and the volume bar for iTunes (like what you see when you double click the Home button). It even took one shot of the IM screen when it was halfway through going from portrait to landscape mode.

I suspect it’s all tied up in the IM and photo upgrade. Already did the clean erase and reinstall. Problem was back in two days.

  563. Xyverz Says:

Yeah, my phone will freeze and get warm. When I use the home or power button, nothing appears to happen, and this requires a reboot (holding down power + home until the apple logo shows up again) before I can use it again. I’ve had this happen several times and it’s starting to happen more frequently. I’m up to 2-3 times a week now. I’ve noticed that when this happens, my battery life decreases dramatically. (It just happened this evening – went in for a 3-hr class with a full battery, when I came out, the battery was at 40% after the reboot.)

  564. Casey Says:

iPhone 3G – 16GB; only started freezing AFTER the 3.1 update. Usually when the iphone is left to lock. Just now it froze after I left a texting conversation open (possibly cause of issue as the software is not yet used to MMS?).

Requires hard reset (power button+home button for 20 secs).

I do have left over jailbroken information on my phone, perhaps causing issues with the hdd and the OS?

    Just throwing that out there.

  565. Derek Says:

I have a 3GS that has been randomly powering off or restarting since updating to 3.1. My phone is not jailbroken and has no software on it that hasn’t come direct from the iTunes store.

  566. Peter Says:

I’m experiencing exactly the same. I hadn’t linked it to the software update until reading this blog, but it makes sense now. My iPhone 3G freezes at least 2 or 3 times a day now, and only a reboot will bring it back. I did a full restore yesterday but it hasn’t helped. I had been very happy with my iPhone up until now. Hope Apple acknowledges and fixes this really soon.

  567. Heloim Says:

My 3gs randomly freezes when I am watching a movie. The audio keeps going. Then the image catches up to the audio again. Very annoying because I miss a good 10 seconds of whatever I am watching. When I rewind, it freezes in the exact same spot. This happens with eery movie and every show I watch.

  568. Douglas Says:

    Apparent Workaround

For those of us who need a working phone, the following seems to have provided that for me. (3G, 8GB, 3.1)…

I was having the same issues above, including the AWOL phone service, which was the most damaging to my work and personal life…so I decided to try the various things listed above.

    1. Turned off WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth and Location Services.
    2. Turned off Notifications.
    3. Under email, turned Push off, set Fetch to Manual, and hiding at the bottom there is an Advanced item that I went into and set to Manual as well.
    4. Then I powered the phone down (Home and Power 10 seconds, slide to off)…removed my SIM…Powered back on without sim…”messed around for awhile”…powered off…put the sim in…and powered it back on. (Sounds like superstition, but couldn’t hurt).
    5. I did not do a reset to factory and restore and reinstall.

Bottom line is that my iPhone has worked without a black screen, without a battery-drain, and most of all without the phone going AWOL for 5 days now.

I have used phone, text, a small bit of Safari, the camera, the weather app, and my daughter has played doodle-jump and ipets…all without bad consequences. (ipets, in particular used to completely drain the battery in about 45 minutes).

Obviously this is overkill, but I don’t have time right now to go back and try turning things on to see which actions were the most important. Just thought I would pass on the fact that I seem to have gotten phone reliability to tide me over until apple has a fix.

  569. David Says:

Same as many others. After installing 3.1, my iPhone will refuse to awake after i’ve put it to sleep. The only that will wake it is a reboot. Happens on average 1-2 times per day. Very frustrating.

  570. Bill Says:

My problem is similar to most posts. I have an iphone 3G 8GB Ver 3.1 and my wife has the identical iphone with ver 3.1 also installed as well as identical apps. I installed Ver 3.1 to both mine and my wife’s iphone minutes apart. Now I am also having random shutdowns from sleep mode….Can’t wake it up unless I do a hard reboot. Happened to me about 5 times in the last week or so. I reset all my settings..didn’t work. Did not do a factory restore and now reading your posts am reluctant to do so as I am not convinced it will fix the issue. I am however not sure it is related to Ver 3.1 as my wife’s phone has been working perfectly with ver 3.1 installed. Could be hardware related as my wife’s phone is a newer model than mine. Hope apple gets this annoying bug sorted out soon.

  571. Nick Says:

Same thing happening to me. Never had a problem before 3.1 and the picture messaging update. Now the phone basically turns off several times a day and only responds to a hard reset. I hope apple is reading this blog!!

  572. Ronnie Says:

I have the 3g 16g and just installed the new 3.1. Never had an issue and now it goes to the “coma” about 15 times a day. I’ve about had it with this phone. As if AT&T isn’t bad enough to deal with on it’s own.

  573. Michael Says:

Have a 3g and have been having the “freezing/coma” problem since the 3.1 “update.” Goes into a coma 20-30 times per day. Seems to only do it when it isn’t hooked up to a power source. I am getting very frustrated with this, Apple needs to do something about it soon, like yesterday.

  574. Carolann Says:

Yo. Glad I’m not the only one with this problem. It freezes all the time. I like the term coma. The only time I can get it to back to life is when I plug it in and then a screen will finally appear. Or the other time is when I try to hang up a call. It never lets me hang up, always have to restart when I want to end a call. Very frustrating. Where can we send Apple hatemail?

  575. Captainsmooth Says:

I have the same issue black screen out of nowhere. It seems to happen during texting. It just started today and has already happened twice.

  576. Jim P Says:

Apple “genius bar” replaced my 32g 3gs without hesitation back on Sept 19th. I have had no problems since then. Before that, I had “comas” 2 or more times daily. The replacement took @ 10 minutes, and “Mobile Me” restored my contacts and calendar in another 5. The only app I had that did not later “sync” from iTunes was “EReader”, but I was able to restore my books from the Ereader store. All in all, a surprisingly painless process.

Has anyone else tried the “hardware” fix after all else seems to fail? It worked for me :)

  577. tea Says:

having intermittent shutdowns since attempted to install 3.1. itunes wasn’t able to do a full install. says that some tracks weren’t able to copy over? i can post them up if it would help but there have been several times that it has taken days and up to a week to turn back on. which depended on me hoping it would turn on this time when i plugged it into a usb / pc connection.

i thought maybe it had to do with my car charger or the usb device that charged it since my boyfriend was having the same issue or of course the new update, which seems to be there culprit. i need my phone working and find this a little more than annoying, it actually has cost me time and money. what is apple saying about this bug?

should i restore factory settings? and downgrade if possible?

  578. Eduardus PT Says:

Found the solution to mine… At least does not get craizy. I simply disabled the option to auto lock,,, since then hadn´t got any crizy iphone coma!

  579. Banshee Bob Says:

Exactly the same issue as everyone else describes. I have 3g-16gb (not jailbroke) that worked without ANY issues until I installed 3.1. Now it will go comatose and average of about three times a day. A hard restart will always force it to wake up (i.e. I don’t have to plug it in). It will sometimes wake up out of its coma without a restart if I give it 10 minutes. I have restored it twice; once with auto sync and once with manual. Neither restore was effective in resolving the matter. It will sometimes go a day or two without issue, but typically returns to its prior shenanigans with a vengeance (a lock up 8-10 times/day). Yesterday it went comatose; by the time I noticed, the back of it had generated a respectable amount of heat and the battery had drained from full to about 25%.

  580. maleeh Says:

I have the same problem with my NEVER JAILBROKEN 8GB 3G iphone. It weird how the screen goes black but if you get a text or call, it will still ring. It will also make the battery charge sound when you plug it into the charger when its in this ‘blank state”.

This problem seems to happen 3 times a day but my phone also goes a few days without problems. It hasn’t gone blank for the last few days but today it went blank 3 times so far.

Should i go and try to force apple for a new iphone?

  581. ben Says:

mine is a 3g. activated it a week ago. then 3 days ago it just randomly went black. eventually it came back on but when i pressed the home button or the lock button it just kept taking photos. eventually i accessed my camera roll and it was full of pictures of what was on my screen. next day it happened 3 times in an hour. i restored it and seemed to be going good but then again today it happened again. only seems to happen when it locks. i’m wondering if there is maybe something wrong with some apps i have or anything like that maybe…… stupid thing has really got me pretty peaved. and will never trust an apple product again, and this is only my first run with apple.

  582. KP Says:

iPhone 3G, 8GB. Won’t come out of standby frequently. Won’t recieve texts or calls frequently. Have to restart in both circumstances to fix the problem, atleast for a while. CAN SOMEONE SEND THIS **** TO APPLE AND TELL THEM TO FIX IT? There are atleast 400 people on this page ALONE that are having the SAME issue….yet they refuse to admit it’s a problem? I think they did it on purpose so that people would think their 3G or earlier is getting slower, and be forced to buy the upgraded 3GS…what a crappy marketing move Apple…

  583. PM Says:

My 3G was going comatose several times a day since 3.1 update. The last few months I was leaving Bluetooth on all the time so the iPhone would automatically sync with my handsfree when I got in the car. I read another post suggesting that turning off Bluetooth would fix the problem so I tried it today — lo and behold, no coma episodes. Hopefully this is a band-aid until Apple releases a patch.

  584. Tuthsok Says:

The only problem I noticed with my 3G 16GB was that the power button stopped working. I was unable to put the phone to sleep or shut it down. I did not run 3.1 long enough to know if it would go “coma mode” or if the battery drained quicker.

I downgraded to 3.0.1 and not it runs solid again. I don’t believe downgrading is an option for the 3GS.

  585. Tuthsok Says:

    edit above

    …NOW it runs solid again…

    oops

  586. Nathan Bacon Says:

My Iphone will not turn on. I have tried plugging into the wall at which point it starts to boot up, then after about 30 seconds it goes to a black screen. I cannot restore to factory settings as the computer will not recognize the device. Its possible the battery is just dead, but it didn’t happen slowly the battery would hold charge for about 2 days up until this happened. It almost seems like the charger cannot charge it fast enough to start it.

  587. Nick Says:

I’ve had a 3GS for about two months and had absolutely zero issues with it on 3.0. Battery life was livable, apps worked, no lockups. Ever since upgrading to 3.1, I get the “lock up” issues everyone is seeing, but it usually recovers gracefully. Yesterday the phone was working but no network access even though it showed full bars and 3G. I restarted the phone to see my battery drained (it said it was full before the reboot). The phone discharged the battery to critical and shut down. I charged it overnight last night and now this morning I can’t launch any 3rd party apps. Native apps work, but nothing else. I’m pretty frustrated. With almost 600 posts on this site alone, I really hope apple is aware of these issues and releases a fix for us.

  588. Al McCarley Says:

I just spoke to an operator at o2 who suggested resetting the Network Settings. To do this go to Settings: Reset: Reset Network Settings. No date is lost (inc email etc) so may be worth a try. I’ll let you know how I get on,

    Good luck all!

  589. Djeghin Says:

After 3.1 OS upgrade, most of the non-native applications have stopped working. While vestiges of icons have remained, programs can no longer be invoked. An unmitigated disaster.

  590. FabiG Says:

3G – 16GB same freeze problem here…phone won’t wake up when in standby and it’s happening more frequently…bluetooth is already off. I’ll try to reset Network settings…this thing is getting really annoying!

  591. Wesley Says:

I’ve been having random shutdowns and freezing since loading 3.1. I must have to restart the phone at least 3x per day. Seems to happen when I put it to sleep or am sending/receiving texts.

Also had a problem with the battery indicator. It indicated a full charge for the whole day, then suddenly powered off because the battery was fully discharged.

  592. Forrest Says:

3gs 16g just shutdown while in standby and it won’t turn back on, it was about 75% charged too.

  593. bro_n_tx Says:

ever since i updated to 3.1 i have had problems with my 3g shutting itself down. three times today alone.

One time it came up in the camera app and i couldn’t exit using the home key, also couldn’t lock the phone or even reboot. after playing with it for a few minutes it recovered. when i would hit the home key it took pictures. i finally hit the camera button on the screen and it snapped out of it.

thought there would be a firmware fix by now…

  594. Roger L Says:

As my battery was running out- the application locked up- then started taking pictures any time I pressed either the on/off button or the App button. It did reboot when I held both at same time.

Fix 3.1 please! I also am getting terrible battery life, and some apps run strange or not at all.

This on the original 3G phone I bought in June 2008.

  595. Katie Says:

I just called Apple to talk about this, and they are replacing my phone. I doubt it will fix the problem, but you never know!

  596. Bill Says:

Same “coma” problem with my 3G as many others have reported above. Was not a problem before 3.1. It just happened a few moments ago immediately after the phone alerted me to an appointment. I can always bring it back with a reset, but this is a major pain. This problem occurs with no rhyme or reason and I have had it happen at least 20 times since 3.1 was installed. My son also has a 3G and experienced the same problem a number of times. He does not use bluetooth.

  597. Steve Says:

My iPhone 3G has been having the “coma” problem ever since updating to 3.1. I had an argument with my girlfriend on why I wasn’t receiving her calls or trying to get back to her. Imagine if it had been an emergency or missed a call from a client? This has turned my iPhone into the most un-reliable phone I’ve ever owned!

  598. juiced Says:

From all the times i got the same problem, two times my iPhone was hot when it only showed the black screen. At the time it was just laying on a table, doing nothing as it appears, but microwaving in the background?

  599. vern Says:

this has been happening to me ever since i upgraded my 3G to 3.1. in a nutshell (at least for me) it always happens when i hit the home button to wake up the phone.

you know how that “glisten” washes over the “slide to unlock” text? well the “glisten” gets about 1/2 way across and stops. then it’s done. completely locked up and the only thing that’ll fix it is holding home/power until it shuts off. then turn it back on again.

    c’mon apple… get it together!

  600. Mr UNhappy Says:

Can’t believe this is the 600th message on here.. yet there are no solutions to the problem! Apple are utter ****

  601. Daveom Says:

All was fine for me after the upgrade to 3.1 until last week, ever since then it blackscreens at least once a day at random times. I’ll wake up and it has done it over night, I’ll plug in the usb cable and that sometimes does it, browsing itunes does it when you exit the program. rather frustrating. And today I discvered that I can’t access youtube videos as I’m getting a “Server is not correctly configured” error message. I love my phone but seems like Apple are quickly gaining the reputation that MS has with its blue screen of death. Sort it out guys please!

  602. Mark Davis Says:

I found one useful post above regarding the return to the Atlanta store. They said that the 3G after 3.1 would read a temperature fault incorrectly. This seems very likely to me. Temperature problems are almost always intermittent and hard to pin down. The various solutions above (turning off 3G, turning off Wifi, turning off push, etc.) work simply because that lowers the processing, thus the heat, of the unit. I know I keep my phone in my front pocket. It is always late afternoon when it crashes on me, when it is probably the hottest.

Yes, I’m definitely a subscriber to the theory that it is either a bad sensor reading after the patch, or the patch is causing the phone to heat up for some reason causing the shutdown. Either way, it is temperature related and keeping it cooler should help us not to crash while Apple figures out how to fix it.

  603. Eric Says:

    I guess that’s plausible… the iPhone is freezing because it’s hot :D

It does seem somewhat related to CPU cycles, when I’m downloading a lot of data from mail or a 3rd party app is when it seems to freeze. I sometimes leave it locked downloading then when i come back to it, it’s frozen.

  604. Amak89 Says:

Can anyone please help me with this problem? Ever since i have updated my iPhone 3G to 3.1.1 i have been experiencing problems with the keyboard click noise. When i type i can barely hear the clicking sound and my volume is turned up and in settings the keyboard click sound is turned on!

Please if anyone has been experiencing this problems with their iPhones and have managed to resolve it please help me?

    thank you

  605. Lucia Says:

My husband and I just bought new iPhone 3GS’ last Monday. His is freezing up 4-5 times a day, mine about once a day. If I had known about this issue, we never would have made this purchase. He uses his phone for his business, and it’s unacceptable that we do not even know that we are missing a call. That was the reason we left Verizon.

  606. Dany Says:

I got this phone and it WAS the greatest thing ever, then i did the 3.1 update, now it is the WORST phone i ever owned, my phone now has a mind of its own, turns on and off when it wants, drops calls, i tried everything know to mankind!!! somebody find out what to do before i throw another phone into the “phone pile” at this point i feel i should’ve just gone with a blackberry! Hell my “ZACK MORRIS” type cell phone at this point works better!!!!

  607. Paul Says:

i have iphone 3g, 8gb. Just “upgraded” to 3.1. mad problems. all same as everyone is describing. freezes for a couple minutes with phone locked. I frantically push all the buttons (power, home, volumes up/down) so i can make a call. then magically it unlocks after a couple minutes like nothing was wrong. I did notice it seems to happen when not answering a text before the phone re-locks itself. None of this would be happening if they just released the completed product like a responsible company would do. stripping out the basics (like copy/paste, picture messages and video camera) to make a need for upgrades is an under handed way to make profits, and to keep you Audience Captive. Then you release a ****, rushed upgraded with bugs to quickly appease the masses. way to go MAC you have become the Monster like Microsoft. Go back to honest, That was the Mac Way.

  608. MATT Says:

YEP. Im on iPhone 3G 8gb. Freezing up without notice. Ever since I got my first picture and video texts… It will suddenly dawn on me that I haven’t received a call or text in an hour… I will try to send a text and I get message send failure … with that little red exclamation point. When frozen, no calls come through either. I will turn it off and restart it… and once it’s running, 6 texts and 5 voicemails come through… and everything will be wonderful for a couple hours.

This is happening 3-4 times a day. Glad to see I’m not alone… but FRUSTRATED TO NO END…

  609. Cesar Says:

I had the problem look tuis war happen it shutdown and never wanted to turn on like it stays in the apple logo but then shutsdown the problem well my problem was solved what I did is restore it but I disentangle back it up I put it like a new iPhone so if it works don’t back up ur phone and ur problem will maybe be solved well it did for me :)

  610. Al McCarley Says:

:::::UPDATE:::::: OK, so after Resetting the Network Settings on my 16GB iPhone 3G 3.1 (Settings: Reset: Reset Network Settings) yesterday, I’ve not had any freezes since. Let’s hope that has permanently done the trick!

  611. Q7M6 Says:

My iPhone 3G was freezing freq since the 3.1 upgrade. Then I did restore as a new phone without applications:

    1. No problems with wifi off, bluetooth off
    2. No problems with wifi off, bluetooth on.
    3. iPhone acted up again with wifi on and bluetooth on.
    4. I will keep my wifi off and bluetooth on and see if I get the problem back, for 48 hours no prblems.
    5. I have not tried wifi on, bluetooth off.

Is anybody aware of any problem with wifi/bluetooth since 3.1 upgrade?.

  612. CB Says:

I updated two iphone 3G’s to 3.1 and updated the carrier (AT&T) configuration to enable MMS. Version 3.1 (7C144), Carrier AT&T 5.5, Model MB705LL, Firmware 05.11.07. Very frustrating: Both iPhones seem run apps and look like they operate normally, but cannot call to (goes directly to vmail), make calls from (never hear dialing), or use Safari (pages time out). Although I see bars and 3G, and have battery, it’s really not on the network and the battery strength isn’t changing. After power off/on, which doesn’t run/look normal, the network/calling capability is restored and the battery indicator is updated. This started happening immediately after the 3.1 and carrier upgrades. How do I get this info to Apple to investigate?

  613. CB Says:

Forgot to indicate that the 2 iPhones are 16GB.

  614. Q7M6 Says:

CB, that is the same problem I had, sometimes the iPhone shuts down for 2-3 min, a couple of time the iPhone is charging, and when I look at the phone it has half battery and when I tried to call my iPhone it is not in the network. See my above post, my iPhone 3G 16GB looks like it is working fine now after having the wifi off. I am still checking to see if I get the problem back. I have call apple and they acted like they have no idea about any issues with 3.1 upgrade Good luck

  615. Fink Says:

8gb, 3g Iphone, since the 3.1 upgrade: Calls blank out Text do not send or receive like normal Phone ***** out periodically Batterly is WAY down When Calls connect the volume goes out And Tons of people say they called but my phone has never rung…nice work apple many thanks for this expensive paper weight

  616. Todd Keebs Says:

Just wanted to add to this that I’m having the same problem and know about 6 other people who are experiencing it as well.

Apple – Get on this ASAP!

  617. Mark Davis Says:

There is a 3.1.2 update that just came out. It is supposed to fix this. Everyone patch up and see if it helps!

  618. PhilB Says:

Thanks Mark Davis for the info. I just restored my 3G this morning in hopes of fixing the problem. I checked for an update before the restore and it was not out yet. The restore seemed to make it worse.

Here is what the update says it will do:

    Phone OS 3.1.2 Software Update

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

    • Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep • Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart • Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

  619. Anthony Thomas Says:

my phone does it alllll the time!!!!! iphone 3g 3.0.1 FW. everytime i reboot it and go to open up an app or text or do anything!!! everytime. im really gettin sick of this. FIX THIS SOON!!!

  620. Lee Koeni Says:

Had all of the same symptoms above. When will I learn to not update anything until I research? Anyway…just updated with 3.1.2 out of desperation and have appointment with Genius tomorrow. If you don’t hear from me again, 3.1.2 did it.

  621. Morbid Fellow Says:

According 3.1.2 release notes, this issue if fixed. I updated and havent had freeze situations after that.. but lets see

  622. Tavare Sanchez Says:

I had many problems after the upgrade to 3.1. I was unable to make/receive calls and even the data would not work. In order to fix the problem temporately I would have to power off/on the phone and it would work for about 2 hours, but it would then get back to the same problem. I restored the phone, but the problem persist. I made an appointment with Genius and they were going to replace my iphone on the spot, but they didn’t have one (32gb white) available. They had to order one for me and will call me when they receive it.

  623. Oliver Panopio Says:

My iPhone 3G freezes (black screen/standby mode) daily, at least 1-5 times. There is nothing i can do but wait it out and press the buttons from time to time. Sometimes when it does turn on initially, whenever i press the home button, it takes a screen shot, but eventually stops. I do notice that my signal indicator/bars looks like it resets as if it was shut off.

  624. Oliver Panopio Says:

BTW: Running the latest 3.1 firmware with MMS update

  625. Omar Says:

Apple just kicked out an update that resolves this issue, yesterday

  626. Brett B Says:

Mine freezes at LEAST 4x a day. I have to hold the power and home button for like 20 seconds and it just goes straight to the apple symbol and reboots the phone. The GPS sucks too. Just stays in one place and doesnt ping or anything. Even with full 3G service.

  627. Philippe Says:

My iPhone 3G is a pain in the neck. Up to today, main issues were: regular freezing; music switching to another track every 5 seconds while using headphones; music accelerating, slowing down, stopping and restarting from what ever track randomly (Yeah really!). Today, best of all, it shuts down after sending an sms. By the way, cheers Brett B, I tried your tip “hold the power and home button for like 20 seconds and it just goes straight to the apple symbol and reboots the phone” and it worked !!! Even the Apple store people here couldn’t help me. iPhone is pure and simple robbery, what a waste of money !

  628. ChristieB! Says:

Holy Hell Batman! I got the black screen of death and my 3G would not respond for 4 HOURS! My battery was not low on power at all. Actually, it was fully charged. I sent a text message and then,WHAM! Black. Oddly enough earlier in the day my ITunes randomly started to play without me even touching the phone. Whatever issues they are having they need to solve them fast or else I might just finally give up the IPhone for something that actually works for the money I pay for it.

  629. Abdul Says:

Even the new 3.1.2 didn’t help with the coma problem , 3GS still goes into Coma ( no response after sleep mode ) .

  630. Launie Says:

I have 3G 8GB and had all the problems listed in this blog after updating to 3.1; freezing up when receiving a text while on a call, several reboots a day, dropped calls, not picking up calls, terrible battery life, etc…. however, I applied the 3.1.2 update on Thursday night and (knock on wood), so far no lockups or freezes, and speed seems much better. Not sure about battery life yet. I was on the phone almost all day (using bluetooth) yesterday and so far so good…….

  631. RJ Says:

OK, so. I have the 3G 8GB, and 3.0. For some reason, I can’t get any 3G at all. I tried resetting, turning it on and off. But nothing works. And I really don’t want to pay to upgrade to have a chance of making it work. If you can help, that wouldd be great. E-mail ichemei350@hotmail.com if you can help. Thanks ^_^

  632. Nick Says:

IT SUCKS. I have a 3G and within hours of updating to 3.1 I got it and its happened every hour since then. I use it a lot.

  633. Lee Koeni Says:

All, 3.1.2 is the answer. Phone used to freeze up to 5 times a day…a good day only froze once. After the upgrade it is a reliable phone again. Not frozen once in 3 or 4 days.

  634. Hec Says:

3gs 32gb still goes into a comma with 3.1.2, happens once or twice a day!!

  635. Kevin Says:

I’m having similar issues as everyone else. Phone shutting off on own. Getting warm. Battery draining at ridiculous speeds. All since the 3.1 upgrade. Some days are better than others. Two days ago no shutting down, battery fine. Today 3 shutdowns and battery dead. Ironically, I’ve not used my phone, but for two short calls today.

I hope apple recognizes this and does something SOON!! I’m actually tempted to switch to Sprint and try their options. YES, it’s getting that frustrating. Who wants a “cool” phone that doesn’t work most of the time or you miss calls because it has shut down and you didn’t know it?

  636. tom Says:

Had the exact same trouble as everyone here..went to Apple the guy tried to tell me that it wasn’t an issue. I whipped out 117 posts (at the time) from here that I had printed out. He STILL said it wasn’t a problem defending Apple and saying people tend to bash new updates. I said, “Yes while that’s sometimes true..all 117 of these people are having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!” He STILL defended Apple saying that he doubted it was a bug from 3.1. He was no help. I ended up leaving him the pages that I printed and told him that he and his co-workers should read it closely. Anyway, it appears as though the latest update from Apple that came out today should fix it. One of the updates reads, “Fixes phone not waking from sleep” or something like that. So I guess the guy from Apple was wrong about it not being a software problem! It just bugs me that he didn’t even say that it could “possibly” be a problem from 3.1. He was like a robot defending Apple.

  637. tom Says:

    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/10/iphone312/

  638. Nick Says:

i dont know if any one else has experienced this, and i have no time to read all of the 600 + posts . . . . but has anyone ever had their iPhone in “Sleep Mode” like when its in your pocket and such and then try to turn the screen back on e with either the sleep wake button or the home button and have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING happen? As if it were off…

that’s happened to me quite a few times but i havent experienced any random shut offs. What im experiencing is frustrating and just a little scary as well…

  639. HY Says:

My iphone 3Gs will freeze/shut down after I end a call. I just got the 3Gs few days before and had experienced this problem. I had tried to update to 3.1.2 (hoping it will fix the bugs) but still the same problem. Is it the phone problem?

  640. Kresimir Says:

I had the exact same problem, but I managed to solve it: I had my iphone 3gs in an XStand, which is made of aluminium, and when I removed it and put it either on the table or the apple dock, it hasn’t rebooted since. It’s also important to mention that the reboot only happened while charging in the xstand. weird huh?

  641. Mark St. John Says:

I’m here because its causing me a lot of frustration. freezes many times a day…I’ve been freezing since day one of the new version 3.1. I notice that it freezes after i hang up a call. What has helped is letting it sit before i try to turn it on. It seems the more i try to get it up makes it worse. Also, i’ve plugged it in for a charge and that has snapped it out. Tonight, an incoming call caused it to open and snap a picture of the screen, then came on. THANKS for the attention to the fix!

  642. Dean Loh Says:

Apple has just release a 3.1.2 update today, it’s said to solve the “unable to wake from sleep” problem. I’m installing it now, will observe and update soon.

  643. Jeff Says:

Yep. Mine has happened daily since the 3.1 update. Resets, on/off, etc doesn’t help.

It’s got to be a bug in the latest update. Hope they fix it soon.

  644. Jon Smith Says:

I have also experienced random freezes several times and had to reboot each time. One freeze happened within minutes of the other. Very disappointing.

  645. Scott Says:

My phone will loose its data/voice connection. Mostly when I plug it in to charge. It will just keep trying to pull any data, like weather, until the phone times out. The only way to get the connection back is for me to restart the phone. Then I see missed txt messages and emails. This started after the update with MMS added.

  646. Mac Says:

My iPod Touch 2G randomly freezes 3-5 times since OS 3.1 After updating to OS 3.1.2 it’s even getting worse. Some times in Standby, sometimes when unplugging my headphones while playing music. It’s meant to play music but it won’t. I love my Mac and my Pod but… I can’t believe Apple is ignoring this issue since OS 3.1. Don’t they read waht the customers are complaining about???

  647. Kowalsky Says:

I’m having the same problems MAC (up here) is having, The 3.1.2 didn’t solve the coma freeze nor the huge battery drain. Have 3 o 4 crashes a day, really frustrating. Apple should release a way to go back to 3.0

  648. Amber keefe Says:

Just got mine last weekend. A white 16gb white iPhone hot off the truck. Twice now it has randomly shut off when I wasn’t using it. When I come back it won’t turn on! The first time it came back on in a few minutes and this time it won’t come back on!! Guess I have to take it back to best buy :(

  649. Amber keefe Says:

I see most are on the 3g. Mines the 3gs

  650. Donal Says:

Intermittantly and without any warning my iPhone just goes black and holds open what ever program was enabled prior to prolem. From phone calls to safari, etc. Extremely annoying bug!! Also, on trying to turn off phone it appears to do nothing also repeatly strike menu button and nothing usually happens although just a while ago it made click noises similar to photo camera shutter ( hav yet t Check my photos ) and also when trying to turn it off it made same noises!!! Total joke, not worth having a phone that does this!! Seemed to have had these probs only shortly after I downloaded new software onto my 3g. Also closely coincided with me starting to download YouTube movie clips Nd similar websites with a downloader from iTunes.. Anyway hope a fix comes soon as I will be forced to replace this which is a total nightmare as apple seem to want to try repair everything and not replace them!!!

  651. MWL Says:

Similar problems here(screen going black, phone won’t wake) since the 3.1 MMS upgrade on my 3G. Very intermittent and no specific pattern that I have detected. Holding the Home button and the wake/sleep button simultaneously for a couple seconds usually revives it but sometimes I have to hold them long enough to force a reboot.

  652. joey Says:

Since i upgraded to 3.1 ive noticed my storage capacity is only 6.7gb and my avaliabe storage is only 6.3…is this normal..?

  653. joey Says:

oh sorry i kinda forgot to mention on my above post that i have a iphone 3g 8gb running 3.1 witht the carrier setting upgraded to 5.5 for mms

  654. Dave Says:

I have the same problem as all of you, and I will let you know something that has helped me wake up the iphone after it has locked out. This seems really stupid, but it has worked for me (and seems better than waiting for the battery to drain for it to work again).

Anyway. Just remove the SIM card and wait a second, the device will wake up with a message saying there is no sim card. Once it is awake you can plug it back in to get service again.

I have done this the last four times my phone has entered the comatose state, and it worked every time on the first try.

Annoying that I know carry a paperclip, just in case I need to remove the sim card, but better than not working at all.

I didn’t reall all of the posts, so maybe others have suggested the same work-around.

  655. Jennifer Says:

I have only gottent the black screen when I am on a phone call.

  656. paulsas Says:

I ve 3GS 16GB firmware 3.0.1 factory unlock and jailbreak. installed .ipa thru iTune and installous. it has been working fine for a while till suddenly everytime I pull up from my pocket want to use the phone and it is off, I have to hold the sleep and home bottons to turn it back on. very frustrated. I used udidfaker1.01 to fake all the app accept the factory installed and removed some of the apps that I installed and it has been 3 days without problem. I don’t know which of the 2 steps I did that solve the problem cause I did it at the same time. My suggestion is remove all the cracked apps and see if it solve the random dead issue.

  657. Robert Says:

Same problem: 3G 16GB screen going black, phone won’t wake until I hold the power and home button to reset. Never happened on 3.0 now often enough with the 3.1.

I seem to think it’s something to do with having an app open and letting the phone go to sleep. When it happpens to me, I think I had an app open (just not sure which ones)

  658. iPhone 3GS 32gig Says:

Got this new iPhone 3gs 32 gig in July 2009, v.3.0 as I have never updated, don’t want to until I hear of no more bugs.

1st Problem ever today 10/17/09: The “snap a photo of your screen” is Not Working!! I use it all the time, but today Zilch, it won’t “flash” nor show the pic in Photo Album. I’ve tried a half-dozen times, no cigar! Booooo!!!

I googled & read elsewhere that you can have up to approx 25,000 photos, so I know that is not the problem as I only have 750 .

Does low RAM (as seen in Activity Monitor app) affect phone’s ability to take a screen shot?

Another person commented on this blog a month ago with same problem: [...] Campbell 30 days ago I can’t take screen shots anymore. : / iPhone 3GS 32 GB. [...]

Same model as mine! Boooo. How to fix it? Hope this is not a permanent problem on a $299 phone that is only 3 months old!!

  660. Christopher Howell Says:

My iphone 3GS just stopped working. Blank screen, prodding buttons did nothing. I tried calling it from another phone and it was ringing but my phone was just acting dead. Held the sleep button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds and it reset itself. Only the first time this has happend but very frustrating. Only had the phone a week. Hope the new update sorts this problem out as it seems like it’s happening to almost everyone

  661. Christopher Howell Says:

  662. John H Says:

Once a day my phone crashes. Only while in sleep mode and only a hard reset will fix it. I have done a restore a and it was fine for a couple or more days then it started again..

  663. stevie Says:

this is **** why doesnt a multibillion dollar company take responsibility for this and fix it, i dont care weather its att or apple. either of them have the cashflow to make this work, yet it doesnt happen.

  664. Harry Says:

I’ve got the 3GS and following the most recent software update I have had no signal and no 3G. Having tested the Sim, its defo a phone software fault. I’ve consulted Apple but no help is at hand. I;ve also had the freezing but very transiently. Any tips on how to get my beloved phone working again, a manual re-boot? I;m strugglin here.

  665. please fix it? I'm scared. Says:

uhh. I hve the iPhone 3G. Nd I updated to 3.1 like a few weeks ago nd now my fone freezes like heck. or should I say shutdown? LOL. well yeeee. I want it fixed cos I’m scared! Pleeeease? thanks!!! x)

  666. Gijski Says:

My 3Gs (32gb) on 3.1.2 STARTED having this problem about a week AFTER the 3.1.2 update!!

Started today and ’shutdown’ twice already while being locked

  667. ArturoG Says:

Very disappointed with apple, my 3g 16g, sometimes does not respond the touch screen, this is very annoying, since I usually I cannot answer phone calls. I just need to standby and then wake it up, and just works fine. I started with this issue since 3.0. No battery issues so far, nor crashes.

  668. JoshT Says:

My wife and I both have iPhone 3G’s and they are having to be reset multiple times/day. Our battery life has gone down to nothing and almost have to be charging to use for more than an hour. All of this came with the wonderful download of the latest version. There has to be a fix coming as I use this for business and can’t keep having my phone hang up on clients.

  669. Thomas Says:

Jumpin on the bandwagon here. Same problem as the rest. All started after the last update. Had to restart 3 times in 1 hour today just for hitting the home button to try to turn it on. 3 times in one hour is the worst so far. Get your act together, Apple. Fix this already.

  670. KrissyT Says:

Muero – try a different USB cable or a different USB port…

Experiencing the same damn issue! About to call AT&T and demand they upgrade me to a 3GS…

  671. Maya Says:

It’s already Oct 21 … and still no fix? Is the only fix to get an upgraded phone? Wuz up?! And is that an AT&T thing or Apple Support thing?

  672. Roman S Says:

I have the 8Gig 3G and have been having random freezes atleast once or twice a day since the update. Tried reverting it back to factory settings, deleted everything on the phone, did everything you could do via iTunes and still end up with the same problem. It looks as though there is no real way of fixing this issue manually so we are all forced to wait for apple to release a new patch. I hope they are aware of this problem and are working to fix it as we speak, it’s already been quite a while and still no word :/

  673. Ramey H Says:

Ok I am having the same problem as everyone else is. 8gb 3G and downloaded the 3.1 the day it came out. Never had any real problems until yesterday. I could tell my battery wasnt holding up like it was and safari and other apps would close themselves out but no biggie just opened them back up. It started running slower and slower. I had the screen and digitizer replaced yester day and 5 minutes after I got it back, WHAM! COMATOSE!!!! Got it to come back on while on my way back to work but kept freezing through out the day. I would do the reset power down and the apple black screen of Death comes on, then eventually the clockwise spinning loading circle on the black apple screen. Sometimes it keeps restarting itself and sometimes it stays that way for 10-20 mins and then I restart it. I was able to plug it into my laptop at home with iTunes and it recognized it. I downloaded the 3.1.2 iPhone update and it took for ever. it fixed my phone for just a few minutes and then BAM, coma again. I kept sycning it with my computer and got it back on. Then I turned of the auto-lock so the screen never goes off till I hit the sleep button on top of the phone. Well as long as I dont ever turn my screen off as of right now my phone doesnt lock up. but as soon as I hit the sleep button on top it goes back to coma mode. This new so called patch is pretty much B.S. as far as I am concerned. I cant even turn my screen off or my phone crashes… please if somebody knows anything else I can do let me know on here. I have read about resetting the network settings and turning all the push and fetch off but come on now I didnt by my phone so that i have to do everything manually. If i restore the phone to factory settings and then reinstall 3.1.2 does anyone know if that will work? just cant go long with out phone service or I can miss important calls.

  674. dillon! Says:

yep! ever since i downloaded 3.1 my phone shuts off randomly and i have to hold the power button AND home button to turn it back on, i don’t like this =[

  675. victo Says:

Had this problem start last week. I downloaded the 3.1.2 update and the phone was fine until yesterday when the same problem started again. It now refuses to wake up any time it is asleep. I have to keep my hand in my pocket pressing the buttons to keep it awake when I am in transit and carry a power cord along with me to make sure I can plug it in to stop the hibernation when I reach each destination. There has to be some way to fix this, can I go back to the old OS?

  676. Robert Says:

Yes I have the I -phone 3gs when my phone freezes and goes blank try pressing the power on off button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds ! Works for me every time

  677. Paul Says:

I have an iPhone 3G with 3.1 on it. I’m experiencing the random freezing problem that is described. I always have to correct the problem by holding done the power + home buttons for 10+ seconds. Then the Apple logo appears, boots, and I have access to my phone again.

I would say the frequency of the random occurrence is almost 1 times a day and usually happens during text messaging. I’ll send a message, put the iPhone to sleep, and then when I hit the power or home buttons just a black screen.

Definitely annoying and hopefully we’ll see a fix addressing this problem soon.

  678. The new nophone Says:

Pulled the sim out of my nophone and put it into a Motorola and hay presto a phone that works.

Sometimes a push bike is better than a Farrari at getting you from A to B if you cant start the Farrari.

My nophone is now just a camara to take pics with. Shame on nophone.

  679. muteki Says:

My 2G iphone didn’t have this problem until I updated to 3.1.2. No jailbreak/unlock for me. Have had the disable auto lock worked for me sometimes ago. But once I enabled it once, I can no longer get the workaround work for me again.

  680. Tiana Says:

ever since i’ve upgraded my iPhone 3G , i’ve been experiencing my iPhone’s screen freezing and when i put it on “sleep mode” it wont turn on to the homescreen untill i click the home button a few times and it happens all the time it will stay on a black screen until it pretty much decides it wants to work properly and actually show me the opening screen

  681. leyla Says:

i have the same problems! i have a 3G, and ever since ive upgraded it to 3.1 the screen keeps on freezing and its been happening more often now..

  682. leyla Says:

i really believe it’s with memory… is there a way to downgrade to 3.0?

  683. Dave LCR Says:

I have had this for a fair while now, on 3.1.2 but did on 3.1 as well. iPhone 3GS 16GB. Just experienced it again which made me look now.

Generally what happens is it gets plugged in to charge at night, anything from 70% to 35% battery life when it does, after a while, phone will turn off even though it has the said remaining battery, then the low battery warning comes up and the charger has to go in for 15 minutes, phone then boots and states 5% battery, and after another 10 minutes or so it’ll read roughly what battery level it was at before it shut down.

Sister has the same problem, also an iPhone 3GS 16GB.

  684. Tim Quiring Says:

Similar lockup and freezing problems with the 3.1.X installs on my 16GB 3G phone. I found it to be associated with what I think is WiFi access. If I turn off WiFi and then shutdown and restart the phone the locking goes away. As soon as I turn on WiFi the freezing/locking restarts and does not stop if I turn off WiFi, only turning off the WiFi and restarting clears the problem. Any similar solutions?

  685. Caco Says:

Similar problem here with 3G 16gb. Started having force shutdown and rebooting with Apple logo coming on and off a few times before phone comes on. Also seeing the ringer volume switch getting stuck at max and appearing for a long time on screen. Has anyone seen this? Just restore to factory settings but still seeing it. Sigh… Android???

  686. Kurtis Says:

The WiFi comment is very interesting to me Tim! Ever since I lodaed 3.1, the phone will not link up to my WiFi network at all. I just thought that it was random, but after reading your comment, I think there might be some issues going on with the networking on the new software.

  687. thetheory Says:

Similar problem with a freeze out of no where (3g/8gb/3.1) but my phone will only respond when plugged into a power source (not usb). When I reboot I can only get as far as the initial apple logo then the phone shuts off completely.

I can boot into DFU and get the “connect to itunes” but my phone dies the second I disconnect it from a power source. so a restore doesnt seem to be an option

In real need of help, suggestions? Anybody?

  688. Natalya Says:

I have been having an issue with my i phone. Today randomly the screen went black except it still shows the time and battery. I am unable to even manually turn it off. If i recieve a call I can not answer or ignore it. This has been going on for about 3 hours so far. I have had issues before where I can not even unlock it and will have to wait about ten minutes before I am able to get the screen to come up to unlock it.

  689. Samantha Says:

This has been happening it is very very frustrating! I have the iphone 3G and the newest upgrade…It started as soon as i upgraded, I will be doing something on my phone, put it to sleep, and when i try to wake it up nothing happens…it just stays black. It happens to me about once a day and i just press the home button and top button a lot and it will finally turn back on…i will shut off my wifi and see if this will clear the problem until the next upgrade (which will hopefully fix this)

  690. Tim Q Says:

Just shutting off WiFi did not clear the problem. Shut off WiFi in the settings app, power off, and restart.

I think that there is probably an additional issue with upgrade as there are still occasional ‘hesitations’ when opening apps or loading images, but no more prolonged stoppages.

    Current OS – 3.1.2 (7D11) Carrier – AT&T 5.6

  691. Eileen H Says:

  698. Ray Says:

Iphone 2G, not 3g, 8 gig, enters coma mode regularly. Often will be awakened by the home button if I wait 15 minutes or so. Phone was working perfectly on OS 3.0. This problem cropped up immediately after upgrading to OS 3.1.

Ok major problems for me blackouts for ages at least 3times a day.txting or writing just about anything is emencly slow.vibrate does not work at all anymore.iTunes on my fine pauses it’s self and everytime I press play it pauses so now I have no music.games seam slower.sometimes when I ring people I can’t hear anything not even the dialing tone. I’m really dissapointed with this flaw that is apparent now is apples fault.I think something needs to be done fast

  700. pluto Says:

Ok, this is a message from Austria, jey I have the same problem, but only since I updated to 3.01. Now with 3.1.2 it is the same. I have to restart evry 10 min, sometimes only 5 per day. Is there a solution to go back to FW 3.0 ??

  701. Larry Says:

I, too have 3.1.2 installed. Does not resolve the issue at all. For me it is autolock randomly popping up, no response to touchscreen, blank screen, no response to touch screen. I am heading over to the Apple store to demand a new phone. 3G, 16 Gb.

  702. Jean-Francois Says:

My iPhone 3Gs, 16Gb, 3.1 operating system froze out completely.

It died when I pressed the sleep button, while the phone was recharging with a cable on an USB port. The battery was indicating approximately 60 % of charge. It has now a black screen, without any activity.

I have tried all the troubleshooting tricks: to power for more than 10 minutes; to test the ring switch to see if it vibrates; to press more than 10 minutes on the sleep/wake button and home button at once for a hard resent; to connect to iTunes; etc.

Nothing gave a result! No Apple logo; no boot.

I will return it to the store for a new one, because the phone is still under the 90 days guarantee. I may consider paying for an extended guarantee.

  703. Susan Says:

I have ha dtrouble with my iPhone not wanting to wake up- from nothing, from a downlaoded app, from safari, from a map, a text message- just about during anything when the phone goes to sleep. I have only had the phone for about a month and just about everyday around three times a day my phone will not want to wake up. When called once there was a message that said my number did not exist the rest of the time rings to voicemail no response from my phone. I haven’t ever used the power and menu buttons to get the phone to restart I do however take my otter off and clean everything off even though not dirty and put everything back on (this is when I can wake my iPhone) 3G 8gb completely up to date with only 8 added apps from iTunes refurbished. I’m going to go to the apple store and hopefully they will give me some sort of resolution. My husband s iPhone is the same bought the same day and has never had this problem. I rely on my iPhone to be dependable as it’s my only phone and I have a baby this is extremely frustrating when being able to use my phone is urgent. And I’m not looming forward to my iPhone biting the dust for good at any moment

  704. the japanese girl Says:

I was on the phone with my friend and the phone randomly shut off and locked, and for 5 seconds i couldnt move the unlock bar. it wouldnt react to my finger. it was weird. then it unlocked by itself. I don’t have the new update, last time i got a update it uninstalled my apps.

  709. Ray Says:

For what it’s worth… My 2g iphone was plagued with this problem as well. I was running 3.1 and upgraded to 3.1.2 and the problem got better, but didn’t go away. My phone would still refuse to wake up after it had been asleep for more than an hour or so. The problem disappeared completely when I set a repeating seven-day alarm. I’m certainly not an expert, but I wonder if having to monitor the time so that it knows when to trigger the alarm may keep the device at a slightly higher level of “consciousness”? In any case, this workaround has completely solved the problem on my 2G iphone running ipsw 3.1.2

  710. Ozzie iPhoner Says:

    My iphone: 3.1.2 (16g 3G) works perfectly fine – :p

  711. Jackie Says:

I have a 3Gs with the latest software update and have had my phone turn off during sleep or just randomly while in an application (less frequently), but the turning off during sleep modus occurs several times a day. Not a good idea to use it as an alarm clock in the morning…that’s for sure. It even turned itself off while charging. Another problem I have is that the battery displays incorrect levels. For instance, it showed 60% left and when I plugged it in to charge it, the battery was only at 10% and red, then turned off. Sometimes it will go down to 75% and the next time I wake it up (if it hasn’t turned itself off again), it will say 98% or 100%??? WTH? Also, I have to charge it daily, it doesn’t last more than a day even though it’s not put to extreme use. I hardly use it for calls, mainly to check email and have gone thru all of the suggested tips for saving battery life. It’s pretty frustrating, but I’m afraid if I have T-Mobile (Germany) replace it, that I may have the same problem again. Apple, please find a solution soon.

  712. DavidV Says:

AAArgh! 2 month old 3GS 32Gb (16Gb free) on UK O2 not-jailbroken. Been working perfectly up to this afternoon.

Now completely dead in the water. Telling me it needs a restore from iTunes – iTunes says “Insert SIM card or enter PIN”. Cleaned & reset SIM card. Tested SIM card in another handset – working OK. Reinserted in iPhone – refused to recognise it. Did a hard reset as per advice on the apple support website. iTunes now says “Unrecognised error (23) and log says: “radio-error = 512 radio-error-string = ‘Communication failure’ fatal recovery mode radio error iTunes: Restore error 23″

This looks pretty terminal to me – O2 support hopeless!!!

    Any ideas folks?

  713. brian Says:

my phone since the update gets network freezes all the time. It will stick at 3 bars and the 3G symbol like nothing is wrong, I can run any app that doesn’t use the web. When I finally notice that I haven’t gotten a call or text for hours I try the internet, and it can’t load, i try and text, and it freezes while sending, I try and call and it just shows their name (no connecting). I restart the phone to receive 6 texts and 2 voice mails. This happens at least once a day and the problem is I don’t know about it unless I initiate the contact.

  714. Steve Says:

For what its worth here is what I’ve done to try and get rid of the “white screen of death”. First, I’ve got a one year old 3G 16GB phone running version 3.1.2 software and firmware 05.11.07. I never had a problem with the phone while using it. The problem was when I pressed the power button to put it in sleep mode(if thats the right term). It would not wake-up and had to be hard reset to get it to work and even that didn’t work very often. This would happen many times a day. I’ve tried restore and i’ve tried swearing at it. I went to the following menu, Setting>General>Auto-Lock>Set it to” Never”. So far (24 hours) it has worked without issue. I’m not an expert on this phone, but so far it seems to be working. Good Luck.

  715. Steve Says:

One more point, of course now If I want to conserve battery life I must press the power button to turn the screen off. A bit of a hassle but if I keeps my phone working (hopefully) it’s worth it. Cheers

I have had some problems too , last week phone wouldn’t let me swipe to unlock so I tried to reboot but wouldn’t allow me to shut down so as would not turn off I had to wait till it ran out of power to reboot , after that was using google and as everything goes through safari it was not letting me close pages or go up or down , but only in safari ! Now everytime I try to send a text just exits and goes to home app pages all this since I got an upgrade to 3.1 last week on my 2g iPhone this is a pain ? I think I need a hug !

My phone locks up more and more frequently and I have all the latest updates. It’s really getting to the point where I can’t stand it! It locks up when I text, a lot when I check email, the Facebook app and Safari. One day I couldn’t even answer a call because it wouldn’t let me. The answer bar wouldn’t slide! I have a 3G phone that I only got about 6 months ago. I’m so, so disappointed right now. I hope you fix this soon!!!

similar problem with my 3gs 32bg 3.1 os. its jail-broken. however my problems didnt occur until installing a(n) active weather theme. then phone kept shutting down. uninstalled the theme, phone seems to be ok now.

as far as the battery usage, i am a teacher so my phone is always being used. when compared to my 3g 16gb 3.0 (jail-break) os, it seems to be about the same.

i would suggest if jail-broken, un-install the last app / theme you installed and see if it goes away. when i did that the problem went away, which makes me think it was a conflict with the program and the 3.1 os its self.

    but thats just my opinion

Brand-new 32GB 3G iPhone (one week old). Installed two 3rd-party apps. Now it freezes (eg, eternal camera ‘iris’, slow slider & password typing etc). Not impressed, Apple! I don’t even know how to uninstall the aps. Maybe the facebook app is a memory hog? I dunno.
