iTunes 9.0.1 Fix the Out-of-Order Episodes Bug for You?
With the release of the iTunes 9.0.1 update last night, we downloaded it and proceeded to run some tests, and lo and behold, it seems that annoying out-of-order podcast bug is gone for us.
You remember the one, where you’d sync a number of episodes and instead of being sorted numerically, up or down, (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4) they were randomly assigned (i.e. 1, 4, 2, 3).
If you’ve installed iTunes 9.0.1, and tested out the sync sequencing, let us know if you’re back in order as well.

I only keep one podcast from each feed on my iPhone at a time, but my smart playlists are still screwed up.
September 23rd, 2009 at 9:29 am
I installed the new iTunes and MMS on my 3g and my iPhone got hot and started smoking!!!!
OMG!!! What to do???
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:02 am
Yep, the podcast bug is totally fixed now. SUPER!
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:09 am
fixed the order
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 am
yes it is now in order but it freezes up every time I sync my mp3s. Still very buggy!
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 am
Wondering if anyone else lost syncing between iPhone and iPhoto since iTunes upgrade.
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:49 am
I didn’t look for this bug- I have an equally irritating one:
Smart playlists synced to iPhone don’t honor the “Selected by – Most recently added” setting. I have a smart playlist to hold all my recently added music, but it’s been broken- I think since iPhone 3.0. 9.0.1 didn;t fix it.
Really irritating.
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:57 am
Nope. My “New Podcasts” playlist is still screwed up, and iTunes doesn’t show ANY podcasts in the list when I view it in the submenus for my iPhone. I kept thinking it wasn’t synching at all, but looking at the list on the iPhone itself shows the casts there, just out of order.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:20 am
Ditto Joe – half of my smart playlists are also still screwed up, but the podcast sequencing of those under the Podcast Tab is now correct.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:44 am
My podcasts list seems (seems!) to be fixed. However, my smart playlists are still messed up unless I turn off live updating. Annoying annoying annoying. Apple’s definitely jumped the shark with iTunes
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:59 am
Why is that when my iPhone is connected to iTunes. It says that I have over 300 pictures when I only have about 160? Is this a bug?
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:14 pm
I just updated to iTunes 9.0.1. Don’t know about the playlist order but it looks like it fixes the podcast random order only partially. Now podcasts with different dates are sorted correctly in chronological order (ascending) but podcasts with the same date are still in random order when they should be sorted in alphabetical order (ascending) also
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:15 pm
It looks like the Apple engineer who fixed this bug forgets that it is possible to have podcasts with the same date and forgets to fix this case
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Still having the same problem here on my new podcast smart playlist. It’s very frustrating…
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:46 pm
My Smart Playlist containing a podcast looks just fine in Itunes 9.0.1 (as it did in 9.0), but when I sync to my iPhone the tracks are in random order, still. To make them sync to my phone and be in the correct order I have to have the Live Updating feature UNCHECKED inthe Smart Playlist. This is reported in other posts here, I am just confirming they are right on. iTunes 9.0 and 9.0.1 are a POS IMO.
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Yes, the podcast sorting issue is fixed on the iPhone with iTunes 9.0.1, but smart playlists containing podcasts are still completely jumbled and in random order. I urge everyone to report it to Apple feedback.
September 23rd, 2009 at 1:23 pm
I have problem: Restoring iPhone software … forever and no response on iPhone or iTunes
September 23rd, 2009 at 2:06 pm
sorting has been worked out but now it erased all my contacts.
September 23rd, 2009 at 6:20 pm
iTunes U content is still not in the right order.
September 23rd, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Podcast bug has been fixed…iTunes U & Top 25 Songs Playlist still not in order…oh well maybe Apple will get it right with iTunes 10 & iPhone 4.0 LOL
September 23rd, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Playlists are still FUBAR’d unchecking live updating defeats the whole purpose of my smart playlists. Added Today, Added This Week, Added This Month OBVIOUSLY I want them in date added sequence not this random **** I’m getting. APPLE FIX THIS ****!!!
September 23rd, 2009 at 9:41 pm
you can’t say C R A P?
September 24th, 2009 at 2:32 am
After listening to a single chapter of audiobooks at the time, I can now finally enjoy ‘The Lost Symbol’ without annoying interruptions:-) 9.0.1 solved the problem for me:-)
September 24th, 2009 at 10:02 am
It didn’t fix my podcast/playlist issue. My podcast smart playlists are still out of order. Some of my podcasts are still out of order, and I still can’t sync new playlists from iTunes to my iPhone.
September 24th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Come on Apple! Yes, my podcasts are fixed, but everything in iTunes U is still in random order. This is pretty silly. They need to let that developer go and get one that knows how to write a sorting algorithm!
September 25th, 2009 at 12:47 am
nope…random order UNLESS I turn of live updating.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:58 am
Wil said: “Wondering if anyone else lost syncing between iPhone and iPhoto since iTunes upgrade.”
YES! So ******* annoying, I’m tearing my hair out here!
September 25th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
It fixed the ordering problem kind of. Its now ordered by day, but within that day, they are completely reverse. I wish I could go back to the versions I had before Apple had their big party.
September 26th, 2009 at 6:23 am
I cannot syncronise my Iphone with the new Itunes 9.
My applications cannot be syncronised.
What to do?
September 26th, 2009 at 8:07 am
Turn off the live update in your playlists and it will fix the problem.
September 30th, 2009 at 8:21 am
itunes 9 CREATED this problem with my podcasts being COMPLETELY out of order. WTF Apple? This is why I hate you.
October 1st, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Nope, no fix for me. And the “turn off live update” option doesn’t fix it for me. Instead, it deletes the playlist on the iPhone.
October 3rd, 2009 at 6:23 am
I have the same issue, turning off live update removes the playlist, and the smart playlist is still out of sync. I hadn’t noticed that my podcast episodes were random as I only use the playlist.
This is a really annoying bug.
October 4th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Podcast order for same date is scrambled still, after turning off live update. Friend that hasn’t updated iPhone but has updated iTunes podcasts same day ARE in order. Compared all settings on iTunes and iPhones and they are the same. Podcasts listed same order in iTunes on both. Is the problem with the iPhone update??? It is driving me NUTS to have table of contents and then entries are jumbled. I deleted all podcasts, reset iPhone settings, resubscribed, loaded all episodes (have same date) synced, and still have problem. Note: always SAME order, just not right order. ANYONE know a work around???? Thank you in advance. Junebug
October 4th, 2009 at 11:03 am
As great as the iPhone and iTunes are, there is still a WHOLE lot of room for improvement.
Smart Playlists for music???? Still in random order?
C’mon!
October 12th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Same ”random order” problem for the ”recently added” playlist. It sucks *** big time.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:00 am
9.0.1 fixed the podcast order problem. No new photos to sync yet.
October 30th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Apple is so stupid! I thought when a company comes out with a new update for a program its suppose to be better not worst! I guess apple doesn’t look at it that way.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:30 am
iTunes 9.0.2 (25) still exhibits the same problem. I am able to sort my smart playlists if I turn off live update but with it enabled, the list order is totally random. Should be an easy issue to fix for Apple. Let’s see if they manage to do it. I for one have sent them feedback on this bug. Others should do too.

I updated to ITunes 9 – I use a pc running windows xp. It promptly decided to rename itself Itunes1 (one) and then wouldn’t recognize my Ipod Shuffle. After struggling with this, I did a search and deleted the folder named Itunes1 (one), sending it to the recycle bin in case this was a disaster.
Then Itunes said it needed a library so I imported my original and it immediately recognized my Shuffle.
Weird bug. See if that helps at all, if you are using a pc I mean. About Apple OS I know nothing, yet.
