New Apple and the Environment Website Shows It’s Easier Being Green

steve_jobs_apple_green_update

Apple has set up a new, environment-focused section of their website, which covers their full product range and life-cycle — including TiPb’s titular iPhone [PDF link].

Give it a look and let us know how you think Apple’s doing.

Good to see a huge company like apple doing something like this. Also, first!

Why does this seem like so much patting themselves on the back?

If they repeat it often enough do you suppose every one else will start parroting it like the old “Macs are easier” and “It just works” lines?

Would a Dell have a different “greenhouse gas emission” profile?

How about a phone that you CAN NOT OWN unless you also own a computer? Do they allocate the environmental impacts of the computer to the phone?

Its probably pretty easy to paint your self green when you don’t even own your own manufacturing facilities.

By foisting all of that off on China, and never actually MAKING anything themselves, a huge environmental impact is pushed off of Apples books.

They talk about how well their subcontractor’s employees are treated. Good death benefits I imagine.

    Color me unimpressed.

Will Steve start wearing Mr. Subliminal green turtlenecks?

This whole green movement by companies is a marketing gimmick to sell more stuff. They are trying to target the weak wristed, hemp wearing, no life’s that sit at Starbucks all day droning on and on about how great some band is that nobody’s ever heard of.

Besides, being green is usually mostly smoke and mirrors anyway. The electric car may not pur out emissions, but electricity is still mostly created by burning coal. The reason why people are so pumped about the electric car is because electricity is so cheap right now. But watch how expensive it gets to light a lightbulb when electricity producers start competing with gasoline companies.

    RANT OVER

@Joe Yes, there are a LOT of companies focused on greenwashing consumers. As a consumer you have to do research on which ones are better for the environment – just because they say they are green, doesn’t make it so. There;s just no regulations right now on what green means, so any company can slap a logo on a product and claim to be green. But it’s nice to see a company like Apple starting to be very open about its practices. Apple isn’t saying it is perfect, it is saying here are our good and bad points. I would love all companies to do this.
