iPhone 3G/3GS Unlock Tool blacksn0w is Now Live!

For those of you who have been patiently waiting to unlock your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS currently on the 3.1.2 software, today is your lucky sn0w day as blacksn0w has been released one day ahead of schedule. It was just 3 days ago that iPhone hacker, George Hotz, announced via his Twitter account that he had found an exploit to unlock any iPhone with the 5.11.77 radio baseband.
blacksn0w is the unlock for the latest 05.11.07 baseband, and will also enable official tethering. blackra1n, a jailbreak for 3.1.2, has been updated to RC3, with hacktivation support, 15 second speed improvement, Tiger+PPC support, and installation of the latest blackra1n.app.
For the full details and on how to gain access to blacksn0w be sure to check out GeoHot’s blog. Need more help? Visit our Jailbreak and Unlock forums.
If you are looking to unlock your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and use blacksn0w, let us know how it goes!

November 3rd, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Easy as hell!!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:22 pm
some reports of no wifi-any problems there?
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Haven’t jailbroken or unlocked my iPhone since iPhone OS v1.1.4. I’m getting tempted again just for the sake of doing it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Well here in the US of A, it’s either ATT Wireless or TMobile. I’m happy with ATT so far. But I wouldn’t mind jailbreaking it again.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Im confused, i thought he said this would enable tethering? or did I read it wrong?
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Here is a complete tutorial on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 using blackra1n and unlock via ultrasn0w http://bit.ly/3JIwon
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:54 pm
have to get this when i get home…cant wait. But is there an app or program that can ACTIVATE the iphone? besides putting a friends at&t card in?
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Hey Rohit thanks for the tutorial. It worked flawlessly. By the way there is a typo in your comment. It’s blacksn0w and not ultrasn0w
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Travis, it has hacktivation in it (:
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Does it enable tethering? Anyone, anyone, Bueller?
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:27 pm
FTW!
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
@tora, hacktivation is in the blacksn0w?
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:59 pm
also does it work with a tmobile sim? cuz right now im at the emergency dial only part…
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
The unlock/jailbreak worked great the only thing I’m unable to find any wifi networks. The problem started after I installed something from cydia…I cleared network settings but it didn’t fix anything.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I just did it, and I’m using a Union Wireless SIM card, in this area they have a freakin-schweet 3G network in the Colorado/Wyoming region.
Adios AT&T YOU SUCK BALLS!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:06 pm
@paul doing a reset-all fixed my wifi issue. I’m on a 3GS.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Is this hard to do?
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:55 pm
@Ray – Check you Netowork Settings page. The Tethering Option should be available but you have to enable it to use it.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:01 pm
I unlocked/jailbroke my iPhone 3GS. Everything seemed to have worked well then noticed my wifi signal was gone as well. I reset my network settings, now everything is back to normal…phew! I hope jailbreaking doesn’t cause me more problems in the future. I wreck my 1st Gen iPod Touch when I jailbroke it (it kept freezing on me and no amount of restoring fixed it).
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:40 pm
i dont want to unlock… can i rejailbreak it to get the official tethering anyway
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:16 pm
I downloaded the jailbreak but what do I do to get tethering and other percks?
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:22 pm
I downloaded the jailbreak & I don’t see tethering anywhere. I tried going to settings then network but I don’t see it. Can anyone help me.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:14 pm
I have a wifi problem too. Resetting network settings solves it until I reboot. Then the problem returns and is only solved by resetting network settings. Anyone come up with a proper solution? I’ve jailbroken and unlocked a 3GS with latest firmware, bb etc.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I have a problem with the unlock or jailbreak not sure i installed Cydia and them sn0w to unlock and restarted after the restart everything was gone the only icon was the blackra1n everything else was gone…. not sure what happend but im restoring again well see what happens…
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:40 pm
It’s saying I’m not subscribed to a cellular data network… How can I get my net back? I’m on Tmobile
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:47 pm
I am having trouble with the wifi and email. It keeps telling me to go to settings and enter my password, which I do, but when I close settings it wipes out my passwords? Also the wifi isn’t finding any available networks. THe whole wifi button is inactive? I was also fine until I downloaded something from Cydia. Never had a problem before until the Rock was installed with Cydia.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:50 pm
Sorry for the quick repost but just did a hard restart and everything is good for now. If anything changes I will let everyone know.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:10 pm
ya, wifi problem here. have done hard reset, reset network settings…it wont let me click wifi?
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Had same problem with WIFI but resetting network setting fixed the problem.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:47 pm
nathan – of course, just install blackra1n.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:59 pm
ok, ive installed blackra1n, reset network settings, hard reset, but i still cant click Wi-Fi — it says No Wi-Fi in that (you cant click me) grey. im about to wipe and reload 3.1.2 ….. unless there is something im missing?
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:07 pm
if i go under general/about/ wi-fi address is N/A???? ive done it with sim in and out…
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:24 pm
After the unlock, the iphone froze. I restarted it and it took it 5 minutes to reboot. I actually had to restart it several times, as it was going in a loop at the apple boot logo. Then my Wi-Fi was gone, same as some users reported. Resetting the network settings did nothing, same very long reboot process. The interesting part is that after it booted up, the WiFi was actually grayed out in the settings menu. Doing a compete restore now in itunes. Screw this unlocking ****.

November 4th, 2009 at 1:04 am
HI! I just unlocked my Iphone with this blacksn0w… AND NOW the 3G network DONT work… the Wifi does.
It say, “COULD NOT ACTIVATE CELLULAR DATA NETWORK” and a have tried to reboot the networks settings and stuff.. AND even deleted the Blacksn0w thing, so it turned to “normal” and without the unlock..
SOMEONE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON?
November 4th, 2009 at 1:12 am
Unlocked right after school 3G Perfect/Easy/Fast PROPS!!! Thanks a bunch!!
November 4th, 2009 at 1:31 am
Have jailbroken and unlocked my 16GB 3G for the first time. Went exactly as planned and am now exploring jailbroken apps… The only potential concern is that I have had to reconnect to my home wifi network several times, but as I have new router it may not be an iphone problem.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:03 am
Perfect. You don’t even need a tutorial. Did you guys spread the info on it being FREE? So the bloodsuckers don’t take the donations that geo could use for the next issue next time?
November 4th, 2009 at 5:11 am
This is my first jailbreak and unlock on my 3gs. Went like a dream, but like many people reported i lost my WiFi. Now at work so resetting wont help, as there arent any wifi networks round here.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:12 am
I am not able to get wifi working by any methods — reset all settings, reset network settings, reboot of the phone, nothing works. Please help, I need the wifi !!!
November 4th, 2009 at 5:17 am
Ah, fixed by problem by rebooting the iPhone, and then manually turning off and on my wifi, and then i can see my network.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:19 am
BTW, I am now proud of my 3GS which is jailbroken and unlocked ! Good work GeoHot.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:57 am
does vpn have anything to do with wifi? mine says not configured
November 4th, 2009 at 7:07 am
To those who are having trouble with connecting to a WiFi network after using blackra1n – go to Settings>General>Reset and select “Reset Network Settings”.
This fixed the problem for me and plenty of others!
November 4th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Here is the fix for wifi problems. here is what I did. All I did was open up cydia and added the cydia.iphoneil.net repository. Then I installed push fix rebooted my phone and everything worked perfectly including my wifi.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:48 am
i cant even get cydia up, and reset the network does not work
November 4th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
I use pwnage 3.1.4 to install custom firmware on my 3gs - after that add source http://www.blackra1n.com to cydia - install blacksn0w by cydia ( like the way ultrasn0w did) my 3gs now on tmobile
November 4th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
To Travis and all people do reset setting
if you have 3gs , don’t try to do “reset all setting” in setting.
If your iphone not JB, it is ok
but if your 3gs was JB, the iphone will stuck at apple logo.
I test on my 3gs 4 times, same thing
So try to avoid to reset after you JB it
November 4th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
i got a 3g
November 4th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
If you don’t have Mac you can download and install custom firmware and install blacksn0w by cydia
November 4th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
ya im on windows, i have also been reading about the wifi grey out problems. is there is a way to download it to the phone with out wifi?
November 4th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I have jailbreak iphone 3g but i can not make calls it does not get any service can anyone make calls?? please help
November 4th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Just google on your pc, it’ll show you alot of link to download firmware already custom ( just update iphone don’t touch baseband)
use itunes to restore ( after retore your iphone is jb and cydia installed)
add source http://www.blackra1n.com to cydia and install blacksn0w i like restore custom firmware already jb it is safer than restore iphone by itunes and then use blackra1n to jb
by the way i’m on win7 not Mac
November 4th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
works great first time keep up the good work
November 4th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
My friend
people have hard time with 3G
my 3gs was very easy to jb/ unlock
i think they made iphone 3G different
November 4th, 2009 at 4:21 pm

November 4th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
has anyone installed rock? i did this morning to try it out & when i added blackra1n.com to the sources & rebooted, my battery was dead in 4hr on Edge so cancelled the source
November 4th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
Have the same wifi problem, Iphone 3GS, I did a reset network settings and ended up with a greyed out wifi button. Everything was working ok until when i switched my phone off and on. (after installing openssh and terminal server. not sure if it has anything to do with anything.
rebooted it again and it’s now stuck on apple logo (10 mins and counting) Might just do a retore on itunes.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
I have a 3gs with the updated firmware. When I tried to jailbreak it. I had a white screen…. and that f’d my phone up pretty good. Luckily I was able to restore it…. I jailbroke my 1st gen as a ginny pig, worked great! You never know…. Always do it at your own risk. I’m definitely not doing that again with my 3gs.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
to all people try to fix iphone
restore iphone to fresh custom firmware 3.1.2 while apple still allow itunes sync 3.1 don’t wait until they come out new firmware and start over again i believe apple will come out 3.2 very soon and stop sync 3.1 and we stuck again
November 4th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
I have a iPhone 2G firmware v3.1.2 and after jailbreak with blackra1n rc3 the WIFI does not work…and even after resetting network setting and resetting all settings….can anyone help me please…
November 4th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
iphone 2g ?
blackra1n rc3 build for 3g/3gs
iphone 2g 3.0 use redsn0w ( best)
iphone 2g 3.1/3.1.2 use pwnage build custom FW (mac) or download custom FW (win)
i have 3 version of iphone 2g/3g/3gs. only 3g alway got problem.
November 4th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Just had the same wifi problem. I uninstalled swirlymms trial using that new rock app, when it rebooted I had lost my wifi and all data network connections… Luckily the reset network settings fixed the wifi and I manually entered my data network info to get back on tmobile. Using unlocked & jailbroken 3gs
anyone think this rock app might have something to do with it? I’m kinda thinking I should just get rid of it
November 5th, 2009 at 12:05 am
I don’t think it’s Rock. I think it’s the jail break causing all of these issues. I had a brand new 3G (1 day old/nothing on it) and it grayed out the WiFi as soon as blackrain was done.
I reset, restored, reset network settings, etc, etc for hours and hours and it did nothing. Something is wrong with this patch.
November 5th, 2009 at 12:09 am
I’m jailbroken with pwnage tool 3.1.4 but used blacksn0w to unlock… Never used blackra1n
November 5th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Hi, it all worked great thanks so much! One problem; how do I now sync it with iTunes? It gives the below message;
the sim card in this iphone does not appear to be supported
Thanks
November 5th, 2009 at 7:36 am
@bas – it says that with mine when its not activated…with a tmobile sim.
November 5th, 2009 at 7:37 am
to: Kenny
that is exactly correct, i have been through so much and really over it. i don’t want to give up on it because i know that their is a solution.
my problem was this…
i installed cydia through blackra1n but the stupid me uninstalled it because i was very cautious with installing… from that moment on i have had to restore, i have had to disable all virus applications on my computer to basically restore it the proper way was itunes was not recognising my phone… after several attempts i thought ill give it a try again, install blackra1n on my pc and got stuck on recovery mode, the itunes/usb picture just overpowered and wouldn’t allow me to do anything not even a hard re-boot once again i had to disable all virus applications on my PC and restore.
any ideas how this can be solved? even though i uninstalled cydia… and deleted blackra1n (some sites say its fine to delete after installing cydia) im assuming that it shouldn’t be a problem… but it seems like it is as its not allowing me to install it anywhere, and i cant even install the installer.app.
November 5th, 2009 at 7:48 am
i had the wifi issue as well, and it takes 2 network reset to have my wifi connection back.
November 5th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Fix No wifi
remove simcard first and do reset all setting - it happen again every time you turn off/on the iphone - reset All setting without remove simcard does not work for me
November 5th, 2009 at 10:10 am
So when I restore my iphone to the 3.1.2 firmware, run blackra1n, should it automatically hacktivate my iphone? that means skip the “insert a legit sim card” screen?
November 5th, 2009 at 10:46 am
I have 3G that I jb / unlocked through blackra1n /cydia process so it’s now on 3.1 and baseband 5.11.77 using Tmobile Sim. It was working ok but is now completely frozen on start up screen. I tried to reset several times without success. If I do a restore through Itunes will it re-lock my phone? If so, will I be able to jb/unlock it again? Any other suggestions to help unfreeze?
November 5th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
The iphone 16gb is not installed on my itunes, so when i go to blackrain it, the cool picture pops up fine then reboots. BUT then the pass code screen pops up and im back to square one. Trying to get pass the passcode, anybody got any suggestions??
November 5th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
is there a way to download just “sn0w”? i got it jailbroke but since i dont have wifi i cant to nothing.
@adam – you mean insert sim sscreen?
November 6th, 2009 at 7:44 am
So when I restore my iphone to the 3.1.2 firmware, run blackra1n, should it automatically hacktivate my iphone? that means skip the “insert a legit sim card” screen?

yes john
November 6th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I’m having trouble with connecting to a WiFi network after using blackra1n. Rebooting the iPhone doesn’t help. I tried to turn Wireless off and ON but it can’t find any networks in the neighbourhood.
November 6th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
To Roland
remove simcard before do reset all setting
I have same problem. Reset all setting doesn’t help until I remove my tmobile simcard.
But if you turn off/ on iPhone it happen again- keep your iPhone alway on
November 6th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
To everyone
stop using blackra1n- this tool just mess up your iPhone- devteam build awsome tool to jb iPhone, why poeple don’t use it !
Use pwnage to jb and install blacksn0w by cydia
November 6th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
To Kenny
Where can I find a procedure on how to jb your iphone using pwnage and wher can I find pwnage (and is it working on Windows platform)?

hi. i unlocked my 3gs without any problems but i cannot reboot… everytime i reboot the iphone gets stuck in recovery mode and then i need to restore and do the whole process again. i cannot turn my iphone off coz when i turn it on it gets stuck in recovery mode again… what do i do? so now i make sure that i always have my charger with me coz the if the iphone turns off, i need to do the whole process again of restoring then jailbreaking/unlocking. help please.
November 7th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Unlocked 3.1.2 with Blackra1n, but ran into a stumbling block when wifi didn’t work. My wifi was iffy with 3.0, so I thought going to 3.1.2 would do it. Nope. Nothing worked to get it back – nothing. Full restore, pushing every button, reseting network, you name it.
Out of desperation, I put it in the freezer. I had read that a couple times. Just couldn’t believe it would work. Checked it 10 minutes later – wifi was working again. No kidding. Quickly while still cold I finished the unlock through Blackra1n. Within an hour or so wifi went back to completely unreliable. But for a while when ice cold worked great.
Got to be one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen work.
November 8th, 2009 at 1:03 am
thanks, i can attest that removing the sim card then resetting the network settings has restored wifi ability. thanks!
November 8th, 2009 at 9:29 am
I Have to say, that resetting the network 2X TIMES(without taking out the sim) worked, I have a 32gb 3gs jailbroken with blackrain, THANKYOU all for your ideas I tried them all one by one till it worked this is a great website very helpful
November 8th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Just to add that my WIFI disappeared after eventually downloading the OPENSSL file that the “rock APP” said I had to download, I dont know if it was to blame or just coincidence!!!
November 8th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
I jailbroke my 3G with blackra1n for the first time. It worked great, no problems at all. Don’t like the idea of it voiding my warranty though. After going through 7 iPhones in the last 2 years I’ve come to rely pretty heavily on that warranty. I’ll we weighing the cost/benefit ratio over the next couple weeks to see if I think it’s really worth staying jailbroken. Right now I’m leaning towards restoring though. Backgrounder, 5 icon dock, themes, and tethering are pretty cool but I’ve lived without them for so long I think I’ll survive.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:31 am

I’m having the same issue as abdulla. I have an Iphone 3g in which this worked perfect on but on my Iphone 3gs it goes into recovery mode every time i shut it off. Anyone had this problem and know how fix it?
November 12th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
I solved the wifi problem by removing from cydia the following programs: Mobile Terminal and VoIPover3G.I then Rebooted and voila wifi works fine. Good Luck piXie
November 13th, 2009 at 12:23 am
Hey guy had same problem, JB and wifi and everything lost. felt like a bird without wings. But then i entered my providers supportsite. (http://www.onecall.no/kundeservice/iphoneoppsett.php). It gave back wifi to me!!! Dont know if it works on yours but it did on mine. Remember to turn on wifi else the mobilenetwork will be usef (and eat megabytes from your account). Do this on own resposiblillity.

My issues with T mobile – T zone plan
1) bought Iphone 3g factory reset from other seller..basband 5.11.7, and iphone os version 3.1 2) Use blcakra1n to jailbreak and unlock..everything went smoot with windows vista.. 3) Try Tmobile simcard. use apc.tombile.com as APN and email, wifi and internet work perfect. 5) When I connect this on my “Imac”- It asked if I want to restore with “ipod touch” back up. 6) I select yes..restore with pics, notes, preference went smoot. but none of my apps was there.. 7) I make sure that that phone has correct APN settings..,phone is still unlocked, incoming/outgoing call from t mobile work fine…
BUT internet, email DO NOT WORK… Error “could not activate Cellular data network .. you are not subscribed to a cellular data network”..
I try resetting network settings multiple time… Still not working.. Help Appreciated in advance
—I am thinking to “master rest to factory resetting” and try Blackra1n again… Would that work…?
November 14th, 2009 at 12:45 am
I have tried everything stated in this responses ….reseting the network settings and all…..took out the sim card then tried to reset the network setting……honestly speaking I have tried with everything suggested here….but still my WIFI doesnt seem to work…….I will kindly request all of you to recommend me something ……thanks and I appreciate your help and support Cheers SDG

My unlocked iPhone had bricked up but I updated the firmware and used blackwn0w last night and now it works perfectly. blackwn0w has to be the easiest thing to use in history! Thanks.
November 14th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
I unlocked my Iphone 3GS about a week ago and it is working fine; however a week in I am enountering some problems. Everytime that I turn my phone off and on it needs to be unlocked again whats the deal with that? Does anyone know how to resolve this issue
November 14th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
FYI – if you have a new 3GS (bought in the last month) you will need to run blackra1n every time your reboot (google tethered jailbreak)
But, i had a problem after unlocking and resetting my network settings (to try to fix the wifi) that blackra1n wouldn’t work and i had to do a full restore from itunes. Anyone else see this (or another website that has this problem posted?)
November 14th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Yes there seems to be a bug in the iPhone 3gs 3.1.2,i had the same problem,no wifi-stuck in recovery when you turn on,but this works perfectly on iPhone 3g 3.1.2. I guess we will have to wait till geohot fixes the bugs,as for those stuck in recovery, you don’t need to restoe again, just click the make it ra1n again to kick out of recovery
November 15th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

HOWEVER THE PUSH FIX SORTED MY WIFI ISSUES AND NOW THE ISSUE I’M HAVING IS THAT EVERY TIME I TURN OFF MY PHONE WHEN IT COMES BACK ON IT GIVES ME THE CONNECT TO ITUNES PICTURE MESSAGE. SO I HAVE TO RERUN BLACKRA1N EVERY TIME IN ORDER TO REBOOT MY PHONE. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCE THIS ISSUE AND IF SO IS THERE ANY THING I CAN DO TO CORRECT THIS NEW PROBLEM? THANKING YOU ALL IN ADVANCED.

does anybody KNOW whether or not an iPhone 2G will be able to work on the Telus and/or Bell network in Canada? Does their network allow for it? HSPA? I’m confused?

Attention to 3GS owners with boot issue
After a search around the web before with the same boot issue myself found out that having to connect to get out of recovery mode is a feature.
Just to make that clear the iPhone is soposed to enter recovery mode every time.

is there a fix for the 3GS boot issue? I have the same problem as Dave & Fallen – when I shut it off and turn it on, all i see is the apple logo. If anyone has a solution for this I’d be happy to hear.
