AT&T Planning Release of $99 8GB iPhone 3GS?

Boy Genius has heard some rumblings that AT&T is ready to launch an 8GB iPhone 3GS in preparation of Verizon releasing the highly anticipated Motorola Droid. While this is not confirmed this would be a good way for Apple to pick up quite a bit more sales just in time for the holiday season, especially in the $99 price range. Black Friday anyone?
Back in August rumors were flying that Rogers was about to release their own iPhone 8GB 3GS but that has yet to take place. This will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
What are you thoughts on the release of an 8GB iPhone 3GS? Fact or fiction?

Well there won’t be any iPhone 3g sales…
November 5th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
They will proly discontinue the 3g
November 5th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I’m already in line
November 5th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
@ britt i got in line yesterday anticipating this news. iWin

Who cares how much the iPhone costs? As long as AT&T charges an arm and a leg for their subpar service, the cost differential of $100 dollars doesn’t really help a potential buyer in the long run. That’s not to say this won’t be a hot item amongst the teeny bopper market.
November 5th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I’m in!
November 5th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
a bunch of b.s.
November 5th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I might consider a 1 gig for $15
November 5th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
What? I just upgraded. Men!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
Who wants less storage?? I want more so I can ditch my ipod classic.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
I hope this is true I’ve been waiting for this rumor to “validate”. I’m fine with the current 8Gb 3G & $99 3Gs would be mo’bedda furr mah pawkets.

@TATom1981
Grow up. I suppose (according to the ever present condescending attitude towards the phone) my fellow law school students who have the iPhone and rely on it just as much as the Blackberry crowd and various other respectable smart phone franchises as well as the various people I have met in very successful companies that choose the iPhone as their work horse device are all the typical teenie boppers.
I had a blackberry and a windows mobile device and I found my niche with the iPhone. My plan is 30 dollars cheaper than my Blackberry plan was with Verizon and my service is better in Harford/Baltimore County and City in Maryland.
Please refrain from opening you mouth when your opinion lacks any justification or merits as it is a waste of our reading time and your typing time. If your opinion contains facts and a substantial argument than by all means post it but please do not rant like a angry spoiled brat with no evidence.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I think this will happen…next year with the next gen iPhone release. Or to go against the droid it’s a slim possibility. Either way I can wait until June to upgrade my 3g for the 4th gen iPhone
November 5th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
hmm it seems as though the first paragraph was cut off but I think the core of the argument is there
November 5th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
On one other note. I am very anxious to see how this (if it is Apple’s intent to market this as such), competes with the new Droid. The droid looks very promising although I am more excited about the development of the OS rather than any of the handsets. Only good things can come from this and so the next logical move by Apple will more than likely be shown in a 4th Generation iPhone. Let’s all enjoy the benefits of these corporate battles.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Yes, you can get an iPhone 3gs for $99, but only if you buy a $300 contract with AT&T for two years.. Blah blah blah…
November 5th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
cue pointless ATT bashing
November 5th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
I’m waiting for a $299 64 GB IPHONE 4g in June. =]
November 5th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
thought their holiday line was set?
November 5th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
You must be delusional to post this, Apple has already said there is nothing new coming out the rest of this year. You seem to follow the Apple gospel pretty religious so you should know this isn’t going to happen, ever.
Also, keeping everything the same but shaving off 8GB (and 100 bucks) is simply not possible. 1. I already said it, Apple aint gonna make it. 2, AT&T cant bleed another 100 bucks off the iphone, their already getting murdered as it is paying the price to keep the phone exclusive (and that money spent = same ****** network). 3, it would absolutely butcher 3G sales and im sure AT&T wants to get rid of those from past stock (or idk get new subscribers for cheap) to exclusively carry the 3GS
November 5th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
If your too poor to afford a 16gb iPhone then your too poor to pay for the AT&T Data plan that comes with it.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
@ Tony
first, nobody cares if you’re a professor. Second, nobody cares what handsets your students use. Third, if you took the time to read what I said, you would have known I pointed to the fact that an 8GB iPhone would be perfect for teeny bopper crowd, instead of inferring to the iPhone being a handset for teeny boppers. Now, go back to watching NCIS, you meatwhistle.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Lulz paying 100 bucks for the 3gs is just a way to publish a cheaper 3gs taking out of the market the 3g of course. That will definitevly increase sales a lil to apple against droid.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
An 8gb 3gs would be exciting news, but doesn’t mean much to me because I cant upgrade until January
November 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
@TATom1981 wow someones a little bitter. Am I missing something? I live in maryland and switched fr verizon, and haven’t noticed a difference better or worse
November 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
@Erik good, wait until June unless you are a complete idiot.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
wonder how long before other countries follow suit .. ? and whether this is a stock decision ?
November 5th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
@TATom1981
At no point did I say I was a professor. I said “fellow law students”. Your reading skills really show your educational levels and background. Your ability to use a word over 4 letters for an insult is impressive, yet I cannot help but point out, that you are once again pointing out your inability to have a constructive opinion. Learn to read what people say and come back with evidence of your opinions. When you do that I will defiantly enjoy reading it.
Meatwhistle…congratulations on a word I haven’t heard before but once again, your immaturity is not shining through here.
On a more “classy” level, I think as I stated before that the Droid offers a revolutionary interface and system therein we can only benefit as the consumers form corporate giants battling it out over inventions.
November 5th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I will say on a side note, NYC areas seem to have a much better level of service with Verizon than with ATT and I think the droid will most definately flourish in those areas and deservingly so.
November 5th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
To be fair to Att, I was sold cell phones 6 years ago (worst job ever). At that point in time Att was switching from tdma to gsm. Since then I’ve seen the service improve 100 fold. I’m not saying it’s where it needs to be yet, but it has really only been 6 years, so I have high hopes for the near future. Also here in Maryland it’s Already every bit as good as verizon.
November 5th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
WTF is wrong with that chart?! It is not a well made chart… Isn’t it suppose to have 8gb on top right so the check marks indicate what model goes where and what color? whoever made that chart needs some help. Srsly
November 5th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
its not a bad idea. it’s in apples best interests to standardise their iphone line with the same product sometime before the release of the next iphone, so why not do it now when competition seems to be heating up.
November 5th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I want it
November 5th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
I would pick this up if AT&T would release it off contract or factory unlocked.
November 5th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
I highly doubt Apple will do that. They made an announcement that their product line is set for the year. Releasing a 8GB 3GS at the same time as the Droid would make a company that’s known for innovation as scared of competition and be reactive instead of proactive. Let the spotlight shine on someone else for a change.

Once again it seems the blog cut off what I wrote
November 5th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
I can see that there are clearly 2 completely immature people on this site. I promoted all 3 phones and I would promote the Pre if I could make my way to the Sprint store to test drive one. Both of you presume I didn’t play three sports my whole life. I am not arguing with children on a site. Period. Have fun in your adventures through youth and I hope you can contribute a civil opinion in the future. Take care

Does anyone remember when these were the speculations for a 99 dollar iphone? Honestly I think this will be a good play on Apple’s part if it pans out. However, I wonder if Apple would plan anything for a holiday special.

@RON thanks i needed that lol

I don’t think it’s going to happen. Also, I welcome the droid. When the iPhone came out it forced everyone to step up their game. Let’s hope that someone can put out a phone that can return the favor! It would be nice to see apple scared for once. I also would love to see a face lift on the user interface for the iPhone. Maybe the droid can make that happen sooner than later.
November 5th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
This makes sense. My best buy store has been out of 3G 8gigs for a couple of weeks. Now I know why.
November 5th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
I got my 8gb 3g. And it’s a great phone. I gotta make it last me two more Years.
November 5th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
I’m only using half of my 32 gigs, I need to load some video on it
November 6th, 2009 at 9:20 am
If you’re going to get an iPhone get an iPhone!!! Go for at least 16gb or even 32gb.
November 6th, 2009 at 10:12 am
If this is true, then AT&T should allow existing 3G users to upgrade without a penalty.
November 14th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
A friend got an AT&T coupon offering the deal. I want one! But at&t wireless still only shows me a $249 16GB 3Gs upgrade option on my account (16 month old iPhone 3G). So will current 8GB 3G owner be able to upgrade without a surcharge or not? God I need the better camera & vid!
