Mac Multitouch Trackpad 11-Point Demo

500x_by_default_2009-11-09_at_3.18.19_pm

11-point multitouch tracking might sound nifty in a theoretical spec throwaway, but what does it mean to an end-user? Likely still not much, but thanks to FingerMgmt we can at least see it in action now — on a MacBook glass trackpad at least.

Apple may have debuted their modern multitouch in the iPhone, but they’ve quickly spread the technology out to their MacBook glass trackpads and now Magic Mouse for desktops. Ultimately that’s good for all of Apple’s products, as innovation in each one can benefit the others on their next revision as well. Now, 11 points might be overkill for any practical need on a display this small, but when we start dreaming of unicorns and larger form-factor iTablets… Oh the games they could make (never mind the obvious jokes about just what constitutes that 11th finger…)

iTunes 9 Software Walkthrough

overview_store20090909

Along with iPhone 3.1 and the new iPod nano, iTunes 9 was the big news at Apple’s It’s only rock and roll but I like it annual music event. And for iPhone and iPod touch users — our focus here at TiPb — a large part of that 3.1 update (see our iPhone 3.1 walkthrough) comes from iTunes 9.

Last things first, no, it wasn’t re-written as a 64-bit app, or in Cocoa for the Mac. (Get of our iLawn!) However, with iPhone and iPod touch users firmly in mind, let’s take a look at the new features we did get…

Screen shot 2009-09-09 at 12.42.52 PM

Sure, iTunes 9 leaked on… iTunes mere moments before Apple’s It’s only rock and roll, but we like it special music event got underway, but now you can have it — not just look at it. Hit up Software Update, and if that still shows the old 8.1.2 version, go directly to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and get your groove on.

New features include:

  • In-iTunes App Management (YES!)
  • Improved Syncing Options
  • Genius App Recommendations
  • Genius Mixes
  • Share via Twitter and Facebook
  • iTunes LP Enhanced Album Content
  • DVD-style Movie Extras
  • New, Redesigned Store

And no, you don’t need iTunes 9 to download iPhone 3.1… but you know you want it!

Review: iPhone 3GS Hardware

iphone_3g_s_hero_compass

It’s the same as last year. There. Done.

What? That’s what everyone’s saying, isn’t it? Apple didn’t give the fashionistas their glowing status fix, didn’t once again jump high enough over the bar they themselves set way back in ought seven…

Maybe there’s a point to the technorati’s collective malaise of mobile-dernity. We’ve already done our iPhone 3.0 Software Walkthrough, so now it’s time for TiPb to weigh in the hardware, and on whether or not it deserves the 2,1 designation Apple is seemingly so keen to slap on it.

iPhone Doubles Share of Smartphone Market

gartner_smartphone_marketshare

While I still firmly believe Apple’s primary currency is mindshare and their primary concern is profit share, analysts fill their plates with metrics and so it’s dinner time once again for smartphone marketshare reports!

And how is Apple doing? Up from 5.3 to 10.8 according to Gartner, while the smartphone market as a whole was up 12.7%.

Of course, when you don’t sell below-cost, margin eating goods, high market share goes hand in hand with high profit share, so Apple is no doubt enjoying both at the moment.

Other big winners included RIM’s BlackBerry, up from 13.3% to 19.9%. Falling in share were Nokia, down from 45.1% to 41.2% and “others” dropping from 28.1% to 18.8% (we have to figure Palm is hidden in there somewhere, and will no doubt rebound when the Pre hits the market starting June 8).

Updated: Apple Bumps iTunes to 8.1.1, Adds Support for HD Movie Rentals

UPDATED: Apple has some brief notes on what’s new:

iTunes 8.1.1 adds support for renting HD movies and provides a number of bug fixes, including addressing issues with VoiceOver and syncing with iPhone or iPod touch.

iTunes 8.1, released last month, has just been given a minor point release update to 8.1.1, likely to provide what Apple verbosely refers to as “bug fixes, performance enhancements, and improved compatibility”. Hit Software Update if you gotta have it now, now, now, or wait and see what the early installers have to say before you leap.

iPhone OS 3.0: What it Means for Business

Last year, during the iPhone 2.0 SDK Event, Apple unleashed a slew of enterprise-aimed initiatives. Phil Schiller took the stage to showcase Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync licensing, as well as 802.1x, Cisco VPN, certificates, remote wipe, configuration tools, and more.

Schiller didn’t show up at the iPhone 3.0 Sneak Peek event (not until the apres-Q&A at least), and Apple didn’t announce something as spectacular as Exchange support this year. But was there anything compelling for businesses this time around?
