American Idol Spam Text Messages on AT&T

Now this is not something new here, but AT&T and American Idol are at it again. The past few days AT&T has been sending out text messages advertising one of Fox’s TV shows. How do I know? I got one of them… Of course this message does not cost the recipient anything and they could easily opt out by responding to the spam with a simple “stop”. Even so, it still has the ability to be bothersome to AT&T customers.

Like I mentioned above this is not something new, I remember getting a similar text message last year when American Idol started. It would become a nuisance if it started to get out of control but a single text, I can live with that. Now imagine this — all TV shows start advertising this way, then add movies, random products, etc… Sounds like this has the possibility to become very annoying sometime in the future.

If what I just mentioned turned out to be the case, would you be able to opt out all together? Would you have to opt out on individual advertisements as they are received? We want to know what is your, our readers, take on all of this?

iPhone Dev-Teams Latest Jailbreak Project: redsn0w for iPod touch 2G

So if you are a Twitter user, and follow the Dev Team (@iphone_dev), you may have noticed an interesting early hour post. So it begins, all of the crazy rumors on what this new code word means. Rumors and speculation all set aside, our very own Rene, had a very good idea… iPod touch 2G Jailbreak perhaps?

It seemed like the iPod touch was being left behind ever since iPhone 3G was released. Most likely due to the Dev Team putting all of their effort into a iPhone 3G unlock. Which is very much appreciated and a good thing for all of you iPhone owners out there. For you iPod Touch owners out there, we’ve heard rumblings that redsn0w will drop on or around January 30. So sit tight for a few more weeks.

For more information about @redsn0w be sure to follow it via Twitter!

The cat and mouse game continues on!

Best Buy Selling Refurbished iPhone 3G’s

Before the holidays we reported AT&T started to sell refurbished iPhone 3G’s on their website for $50 less than what you could buy a new device for. Well now it seems Best Buy is taking a page out of AT&T’s book. According to ars technica:

Best Buy will sell a 8GB refurb for $149 and 16GB refurb for $249. These units normally retail for $199 and $299 respectively, and normally ship with a full one-year warranty. The refurbished units will sell with at least a 90-day warranty, and possibly more. You can check the amount of time remaining on your warranty by entering the serial number at Apple’s Online Service Assistant page.

So just like the AT&T refurb deal you now have a choice to make. Save $50 on a used device with a 30 day warranty… Or spend that extra $50 and get a brand new device and a full years warranty.

One more thing to keep in mind, these refurbished devices still require a full 2 year contract commitment. Decisions decisions…

Yet Another AT&T Outage?

Say it is not so AT&T. Another outage seemed to take place this morning, mostly effecting the East coast this time. It was a little over a week ago where myself and Dieter, in the Midwest, noticed something was a little off – to say the least – with our service. Both data and voice were effected then. In the end, that was blamed on a power failure.

Today, here in the Midwest, all is well. But it seems like a lot of East coast customers have some major issues with their data. So all you East coast readers, are you back surfing the web on your beloved iPhone? Or are you still sitting there lost with no data service?

Maybe this has something to do with the recent reports of AT&T beefing up their 3G network? Never the less, hopefully everything is now back to normal!

Let us know!

AT&T Tethering Plans to Drop This Week?

Back in November Dieter told us about the Evil Empires (AT&T) plan to drain another $30 from all of it’s iPhone owners if they wanted to tether with a laptop. Well according to TUAW this may be the week you have all been waiting for.

It’s been under the rumor banner for some time now, but we’ve been told by a trusted source that the long-awaited AT&T iPhone-as-modem tethering plans (preliminary details in MacBlogz’ post from November: 5 GB data cap, $30/month supplementary cost) may be ready for prime time during Macworld Expo this week. The tethering announcement might not rise to a keynote-worthy level; it could simply be publicized as a press release during the show.

So what will you get for your $30 a month??? 5 GB data cap… A bit steep don’t you think? Then again would you expect anything else from AT&T? I know the few times I would actually be tethering, I’d willing to take that risk on the Jailbroken app. Are you willing to pay that much for this service or are you more willing to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G and roll the dice with a program such as PdaNet?
