So you say you updated to the latest Mac OS X 10.5.6 and wanted to jailbreak or unlock. Well the update severely hindered your ability to do that. The Dev-Team says it is a simple kernel bug and not a specific countermeasure by Apple, never the less, there is still a work around.
It’s a pretty straight forward fix actually, first you need to have administrator privileges. Then download the script file . Got it? Good, now continue on for the detailed instructions after the break!

If you were waiting for a price drop to pick up your own iPhone 3G, now might be your only chance. AT&T is now offering refurbished iPhone 3G’s on their website. 8GB’s are going for $149.99 and 16GB’s can be picked up for $249.99. Of course these prices require a 2 year service agreement.
Just a heads up on refurbished devices from AT&T:

Well it is now official, the Dev-Team has updated their blog today to let you all know when the iPhone 3G software unlock will be released. Seems as if New Years eve is what they are aiming for.
- The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
- This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
- The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.
Another bit of jailbreaking related news, a word of warning to all Mac owners: If you are planning on jailbreaking or unlocking your iPhone, TiPb suggests you put the Mac 10.5.6 system update on the back burner until the Dev Team comes up with a solution to the issue. Or you try the following work around:
We believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!)
Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)
- /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext
- /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext
Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.
Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!
Again, take heed to their warning, if you don’t understand what they are saying, Don’t Attempt It!

This past Saturday Apple posted a new support page, a simple list of all the carriers currently selling iPhone 3G’s and which ones are locked and which ones are unlocked. As all AT&T customers know, our iPhone’s are locked down tight until the Dev-Team can do something about it. I suppose if you were that desperate and crafty you could use this list of unlocked carriers to get yourself one, for a hefty fee of course… and be sure to know how to speak fluent Chinese if you want support for one purchased in Hong Kong or Taiwan.

For anyone who has been waiting for a software unlock soltution for their iPhone 3G, it looks like you patience will be paying off in a short few weeks. As Dev Team member MuscleNerd stated “Target date is a few days after Christmas”.
With this good news comes some bad news… in order to be one of the first to be able to unlock your iPhone 3G it will be required that you are running the 01.45.00 baseband. Which would mean you are on 2.0 firmware. Now who is actually running the 2.0 firmware at this moment in time is beyond me but we have to take what comes our way. There is a possibility that a unlock will come for the 02.11.07 baseband (2.1 firmware) as well but that is not for certain. And if you are running the 2.2 firmware currently you must have followed our guide to jailbreak 2.2 firmware on a Mac while preserving the baseband. The Dev-Team did warn you and we relayed the warning numerous times.
Here is what the Dev-Team had to say recently:
Right now for 02.11.07 we have some untested ideas. Ideally we’d have something solid by the end of next week, but if we don’t then it would be a staged release, with 01.45.00 first out of the gate.
Here is a list of the iPhone firmware versions and their matching basebands…
- 2.0.0 Firmware & 01.45.00 Baseband
- 2.0.1 Firmware & 01.48.02 Baseband
- 2.0.2 Firmware & 02.08.01 Baseband
- 2.1.0 Firmware & 02.11.07 Baseband
- 2.2.0 Firmware & 02.28.00 Baseband
Those of you lucky enough to still be on 2.0.0 or the 01.45.00 baseband will be able to unlock first. If you are at 2.1 or used PwnageTool to update to 2.2 then you will have the 2.11.07 baseband. This will be the second baseband to receive an unlock. Those on the 02.28.00 baseband will likely have to wait a while before an unlock is released so make sure you use a tutorial on our site to jailbreak and update rather then using iTunes directly.
If this has totally confused you, accept our apologies. An iPhone 3G software unlock should be here before New Years for the first baseband of the device. Other unlocks for later basebands should come shortly after. Keep hanging in there, the Dev-Team will take care of you!

So you’re still debating whether or not to jailbreak your iPhone? Hopefully after reading this you will have made your decision. Back in October we brought to you the first Top 5 Must-Have Jailbreak Apps, well today we bring you round two of the series. Now keep in mind, all the seasoned veterans of Jailbreaking will or should know about all the apps listed here. This article is for the sole purpose of swaying those still on the fence to the darkside…
***All of the following apps can be downloaded via Cydia on your Jailbroken iPhone.
Read on after the jump!
Yes, you read the title correctly. In a move that nobody expected, you can now purchase an iPhone 3G from AT&T’s web site, have it delivered to you, and activate it in the comfort of your own home. This home delivery service is now being offered to both existing customers adding a line and new customers.
If you purchase within the next 8 days you are promised to have your new iPhone the next day with free overnight shipping. AT&T also notes that shoppers have 8 days left in order to have it delivered before the Christmas holiday.
Shockingly, this option is not available on Apple’s website as of today. If you still want to purchase a iPhone 3G at a Apple store you have to hop in your car and drive yourself to the local store. (Although, there is this feeling like Apple will follow AT&T’s lead sometime in the near future.)
So what do you readers think? Isn’t this the way it should have been since July 11th?
Important note: You cannot purchase iPhone 3G’s as gifts for the simple reason that you need to be the actual account holder. If you are not the account holder and want to purchase a gift your only option is the iPhone 3G Gift Card.
