Got $120? Apple Online Store has TomTom Car Kit for iPhone!

TomTom Car Kit on Apple Online Store

Just bought that ~$100 TomTom iPhone app and have $120 ($119.95 to be exact) bucks more burning a whole in your wallet? What luck! The matching TomTom car kit has just become available via the Apple Online Store! (Shipping in 2-3 weeks!)

Yes, that’s $220 total cost of ownership for TomTom lovers, but it’s so hard to set a price on convergence, isn’t it? (Especially when that convergence now comes in two parts!)

Anyone buying it? If so, tell us why. If not, tell us why as well!

Quick Look: Dark Horse and Gelaskins Brings Buffy-grade Protection to Your iPhone

16814

Dark Horse Comics, purveyors of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8, Angel, Hellboy, among other licensed and creator-owned fare have teamed up with Gelaskins to produce a series of comic and pop-art inspired protective coatings for your iPhone, iPod touch, and laptop.

They were kind enough to send TiPb a sample of the Buffy and Hellboy iPhone 3GS skins, and the art was bold and beautiful, and the product every bit as good as I’ve come to expect from Gelaskins (I’ve been using them for a long time, as those who’ve seen my iPhone 3G with Dragon skin in our videos can attest.)

They won’t protect your iPhone from severe impact, but they’ll keep scrapes and abrasions at bay, (and if an imaginary vampire attacks, maybe, just maybe, Buffy or Faith will jump out and dust them for you).

Each skin has a matching wallpaper available for download. iPhone and iPod touch skins are $14.95 and available via the above link.

Quick Look: Pong iPhone Radiation-Reducing Case

Pong_case

If cell phone radiation emissions is something that concerns you, you may be interested in taking a look at the Pong radiation-reducing case [$59.99- Web link].

Pong Research was nice enough to send us a sample to check out and, at first glance, it looks like a solid silicone case. It offers good protection while giving you full access to all ports, controls, and the camera. But a quick look on the inside reveals what makes this case so valuable – the Pong Gold PCB Module that reduces overall radiation output by 60%. It is this PCB module that directs an iPhone cell signal and radiation through the back of the phone, keeping it away from the user’s head.

While the price is not cheap, if you are in the market for a silicone case and want protection from radiation, it’s worth a look.

iPhone Accessories Can Now Prompt for App Download

accessory-app-download-2

iLounge has noticed that, when connecting to an accessory that supports iPhone 3.x SDK’s dock access abilities:

an alert box labeled “Application Not Installed” appears, informing users that the accessory requires an application which is not currently installed, and asking if they would like to install the application from the App Store. Upon acceptance, the iPhone or iPod touch then takes users to a new “For This Accessory” page on the App Store, with a direct link to the necessary app’s listing, from which they can download and install the application.

They show how it works for the iTrip, but this is a very “just works” solution in general for users who may not be aware when companion apps are available.

TomTom iPhone Car Kit Pricing Revealed

TomTom has finally gotten around to revealing the price point for their much anticipated iPhone car kit, which provides its own GPS as well as iPhone charger, loud speaker, and hands-free dialing.

TomTom car kit for the iPhone will have a recommended retail price of EUR 99.99 or USD 119.95.

The TomTom car kit will be available this October and will be sold separately from the TomTom app. It will be compatible with the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS.

When you add in the price of the TomTom iPhone app, that more than $200 for the combo, not exactly a bargain compared to a stand-alone GPS device. Then again, this saves you having to carry around a second device just for GPS, so does convenience trump cost, or does TomTom need to rethink their business model here?

Could they offer a second version of the TomTom app — one that only works with the car kit — at a greatly discounted price for those who shell out for the car kit? More importantly, should they?
