Confession: I bought my first PDA so I could work on some book projects while mobile. Several Palm PDAs, Treos, and Windows Mobiles later, and I was still looking for that holy grail: seamless back-and-forth compatibility between my desktop tools and my handset. Of course, the iPhone didn’t have any document editing features when it was launched, but flashforward to today, and Quickoffice is the first to fill that huge functionality gap. Quickoffice Mobile Suite ($19.99 – iTunes link) sets the bar:
Quickoffice’s integrated application is the essential high-performance mobile office productivity tool for anyone on the go. Experience enterprise-grade Microsoft® Word and Excel® Office functionality with leading-edge innovation and unparalleled ease-of-use. Edit important files with confidence; Quickoffice maintains 100% data integrity and guarantees Microsoft compatibility.
Is this my holy grail? Let’s find out: courtesy of Quickoffice, we’re giving away two (2) copies of the full Mobile Suite to two lucky forum members and all you have to do to win is help me finish my latest story:

CrackBerry Nation. Trekkies (Trekkers?). Wu Tan Clan. Colbert Nation. TiPb… ???
Who are we? What are we?
We need an identity here folks! And we need you to come up with it!
Post your ideas in a reply to the TiPb Birthday Bash: Name the “Nation” forum thread! There’s a juicy $50 iTunes Gift Card up for grabs for the one we like best, so get with the collective naming!
- iTunes US (or Canada) account needed to redeem gift card. (Don’t have a US account, no problem, see here!)
- Contest runs from now until Monday, May 11, 12pm EDT
- Enter as often as you like
- In the event of similar suggestions, we’ll credit the one made first.
- For the above reason, edited posts will be disqualified. If you have a better idea, make a new post.
Good luck, TiPB… ???!

For NO PARTICULAR REASON, we just wanted to remind everyone that even if you don’t have a US credit card, Apple has helpfully provided a knowledge base article on how to create and use US App Store accounts. With these accounts, you can still download and use apps (and redeem promo codes).
The process involves making sure you’re not already logged in with another account, then choosing App Store from the menu, downloading a free app, choosing “none” for the payment type, and responding to the confirmation menu.
Downside is it requires you to download apps via iTunes — for now. iPhone 3.0 will let you manage multiple accounts on-device.

G-Map for iPhone, in both US East and West flavors ($24.99 each – iTunes link), is the current king of the iPhone roads. Chad’s already gone on record with his love for this app:
I have been using G-Map US East for the iPhone now for a couple of months. Why wait for FULL GPS Navigation with Turn-by-Turn with Software 3.0 when you can have it now. All that is lacking is the audible cue to turn, but it has excellent visual cues. Easy to use and fast calculations make this one a winner! The developer says they will add Audible Turn-by-Turn with Software 3.0. Did I mention that Internet access is not required? That’s right, all of the maps are on your hard drive with no subscription!
With slick features like real 3D junction view, there’s nothing else like it for short hauls or cross-country road trips alike. Which brings us neatly to our first, and maybe one of our most challenging TiPb Birthday Bash contests!
Inspired by babydol’s idea, head on over to the TiPb Birthday Bash: G-Map East & West Great American Give Away! thread in the forums and post a photo of your iPhone that best shows where it’s been, where you want it go, or just how you feel about traveling the United States. Be majestic, be funny, be creative. (And yes, Photoshop is fine too.)
Give us that EPIC moment of iPhone Americana, and we’ll pick five (5) of you to give promo codes for BOTH G-Map East & West (that’s $50 worth of apps!), courtesy of XROAD.

SplashData let us know that, with the release of SplashPhoto and SplashNotes, they’ve finished porting their well-known suite of mobile applications to the iPhone:
SplashPhoto features easy sync with the desktop companion, and integration with Flickr and Picasa for photo sharing. SplashNotes sync with the desktop is even better because it’s easy to take notes on a laptop and then take them with you on your iPhone — or vice versa.
Check out their complete — and extensive — lineup of apps at SplashData.com, including one of their favorites, Birthdays:
It tells you how many days are left before your friends’ birthdays. It automatically pulls in birthdays from your contacts.
If you’ve tried any yourself, drop a us a comment below and let us know how it worked for you!

As it did the year before, the Smartphone Round Robin needed to go into overtime again this time around — but we’re finished now! If you haven’t been following along, here’s what you missed: Each of the editors of our five Smartphone Experts sites swapped phones for a week or so, reviewing and leanring what it’s like to wear another smarphone user’s shoes. The result is the entire series of articles you see linked on this handy page, the Smartphone Round Robin of 2008.
What will you learn there? You’ll learn that there was no single smartphone that ‘won’ the Round Robin — but that’s by design. There’s no perfect smartphone out there, but there just might be the perfect smartphone to fit your needs. If you’re looking to get a new smartphone soon, think about what you need it do to and then hit up these articles — you’ll find that depending on what each of us care about, we’ll give you a useful perspective on whether a given smartphone matches up.
Actually, we explain it all pretty well on this page. Oh, yeah, one more thing, we are giving away fabulous prizes:
- From Android Central, the T-Mobile G1, the BlueAnt Z9 Bluetooth Headset, and SPE Screen Protectors
- From CrackBerry.com, the BlackBerry Bold, Spare Battery, and Case-Mate Second Skin
- From The iPhone Blog, the iPhone 3G, Case-Mate Naked Case, and Motorola H9 Bluetooth Headset
- From TreoCentral, the Treo Pro, Case-Mate Clear Armor, and Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth Headset (original)
- From WMExperts, the HTC Fuze and the Celio Redfly Mobile Companion
Find out who the winners are, after the break!

The 2008 Smartphone Round Robin was originally scheduled to finish… in 2008! December 31st — Today!
HOWEVER, by popular demand (read: delayed shipments, holidays, prep work for Macworld and CES, and Kevin escaping from yet another CrackBerry withdrawal facility), we’re now giving everyone 10 extra days to win. That’s right, from now until January 10th, you can make one more comment/forum post, per thread, per day (including this one!).
Given how many threads we have going not just on TiPb, but on Android Central, CrackBerry.com, WMExperts, and TreoCentral, that’s like a smartzillion extra chances to win an iPhone 3G, Android G1, BlackBerry Bold, HTC FUZE, or Treo Pro — each with accessories! (We’re going with the Case-Mate Naked Case, and Motorola H9 Bluetooth Headset! (Full contest rules here!)
So what are you waiting for? Check out all TiPb’s Round Robin posts, comment every day, head on over to the forums, make fun of Kevin, Dieter, Casey, Jennifer, and me (also every day), and good luck!
