Quick App: Air Mouse 1.5 for iPhone

Chad reviewed Air Mouse a while back, and now they’ve let us know they’re back with a 1.5 update that adds some nifty new features, including:

the computer notifies Air Mouse as to which app it’s currently running so that Air Mouse can show the correct keys for that app. We plan to make more use of this system in future versions and think that this is the directions that all remotes will be heading in the future.

Check out the above video for more on the navigation and media player support, and if you try it out, let us know what you think!

Quick App: Multi-Photo Sends More than One Photo in a Single Email

Here is yet another case of a 3rd party developer picking up the slack for Apple. Sorry, we are not here to tell you that you can now have true MMS like the Portuguese! But we are here to let you know that you can now send multiple photos in a single email with Aqua Eagles new app, Multi-Photo. [iTunes Link] Read more after the break! Read the rest of this entry »

Speed Brain for the iPhone: Exercise Your Brain!

It’s easy to get overwhelmed these days with the avalanche of information about how to get fit, take care of your body, live longer, live better, eat better, and so on. Diets come and go, new fitness machines are peddled faster than you can say “infomercial” and Chuck Norris’ age seems to be the only constant.

It may be easy, then, to ignore the brain and forget the old adage ”mind over matter.” Without the mind, it won’t really matter. The folks at lumosity.com understand the importance of exercising your brain and have a scientifically-proven method for doing so. Fortunately, exercising your brain doesn’t require expensive equipment or hauling around heavy workout apparatus – if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch and can summon the physical strength to tap the glass, you can start exercising your brain now with their app, Speed Brain.

How does Speed Brain work? Read on after the break!

Quick App: MobileFiles Pro Brings Native Excel 2003 Editing to the iPhone

We’ve mentioned the original, FREE, MobileFiles application before, which lets you access MobileMe’s iDisk via the iPhone. Well, now we’ve also got MobileFiles Pro and along with the $9.99 price tag comes a killer feature that a lot of productivity mavens have no doubt been waiting for:

EDIT! native Microsoft Excel 2003 documents just as you would on your desktop. Save the edited Excel file on your iPhone, send to your iDisk account remotely, or upload to your desktop using WiFi – all while maintaining perfect data integrity.

MobileFiles Pro is developed by QuickOffice, so this definitely makes the kind of sense that does. The only question is: when will Word and PowerPoint editing follow?

Have you tried MobileFiles yet? If so, let us know what you think!

Quick App-ocalypse: Fartbox for iPhone… Seriously?

And Lo! When Apple opened the 1st seal, “Pull My Finger” was approved. When Apple opened the 2nd seal, “iFart Mobile” earned $10,000 a day. And when Apple opened the 3rd seal, there was silence in the App Store… except for a deafening cacophony of flatulence as Fartbox took to the field of battle.

Mactropolis has all the… graphic details, including sounds and languages (languages!).

Yeah. Um. Darwin kernel, BSD networking, OpenGL graphics, and the first new UI revolution in a decade, and farting is dominating the sales discussion and — doubtless — the funding pitch space.

Could the Hell Mouth hurry up and swallow us now-ish?

Quick App: Resco Bubbles

I’m usually not a fan of games like Resco Bubbles, but I have to admit that this one is pretty addictive. The premise is simple:

Resco Bubbles for iPhone/iPod Touch is an action puzzle game where the idea is to clear the grid of bubbles in order to advance to the next level. You are given a sequence of bubbles, which should be quickly and efficiently popped. Numerous explosive, speed-up, slow-down and damage bubbles keep the game play exciting and challenging.

You can now purchase the full version of Resco Bubbles in the App Store for $1.99 or you can give it a try for free simply by downloading the lite version.

Quick App: Vlingo Voice Powered Search for iPhone

Looks like Google isn’t the only one making sure that when a user talks, the iPhone listens. Vlingo wrote in to tell us that their well-known BlackBerry app is now available for the iPhone, and it sure looks like they’ve been listening as well!

Vlingo lets you:

  • Initiate calls to anyone in your address book.
  • Look up anything through Yahoo! or Google in one step. Just say, “Web search: concert tickets in Boston,” and the results are displayed.
  • Look up and map local listings. For example, by saying, “Find Italian restaurants in San Francisco,” vlingo will show choices and can populate Google Maps with the touch of a button.
  • Send Facebook and Twitter status updates without typing. Vlingo also automatically embeds a Web browser so users can easily access the mobile versions of Facebook and Twitter to keep track of their friends’ updates.

Google works pretty well, but doesn’t include contact search (and seems to have trouble with British, Southern, or anything other than TV-ized North American accents.)

Vlingo does search contacts, and does a good job of it (and even suggests alternatives, which is welcome when it has trouble distinguishing between individuals with close-sounding names). However, unlike Google (which uses forbidden API’s to access the phone-like “lift to your ear and start talking” functionality) you have to press a button, then talk, then press a button again when you’re finished. There are helpful tutorials included to get you used to the process and on your way.

Patrik Aronsson let us know that MadInSweden has released their first iPhone game, Whack It: Frogs, intended to deliver a high level of graphics, music, and sound enjoyment. Why target the iPhone? According to Patrik:

The capacity and the possibilities inherent in the iPhone platform is just wonderful. The benefit of having the possibilty to execute a good idea without having to compromise is a thrill. Your own time is the only limitation

If you try it out, be sure to let us know what you think!

Quick WebApp: Ecardlets for the iPhone

Eric wrote in to let us know about Ecardlets, an eCard WebApp targeted specifically at the iPhone. Says Eric:

Ecardlets shows that the Web App SDK is every bit as exciting as the iPhone SDK. We were able to build a rich, tactile, 3-D card experience in a way that can be run entirely through Safari and requires no additional downloads for senders or recipients.

Ecardlets on the iPhone is the first mobile greeting card application that takes advantage of digital photography in such a big way, simply because this is the first platform that has had a beautiful, high-resolution screen.

If any eCard fans out there give it a try, please let us know how it works for you!

Quick App: Movie Challenge for the iPhone

Conor sent us a note about the new game from Redwind Software. They’re coming from a .Net background, and this is their first attempt at Cocoa Touch and the iPhone, and it seems from the video they’re embracing the differences whole heartedly!

Movie Challenge is a trivia/quiz style game at its core, but so much more when examined in detail. Rather than the simple question after question after question, leveling up to meaningless levels that seems to be the norm in most trivia games on the platform we have strived to provide more. There are multiple categories, multiple game types, accelerometer action, touch screen drag and drops, power ups and the list goes on.

If you’re a movie trivia buff and you decide to meet this challenge, let us know how you do!
