Apollospash

ApolloIM was the first native app to provide AOL Instant Messaging. Although it’s a little rough around the edges, it’s a solid first attempt at an IM client. It’s currently in version 0.1.2 and developing quickly. Read on to see what works, what doesn’t, and what we might expect from future versions.

Rumor Quashed: iPod Touch Has No Bluetooth :(

Ipodtouch-Bt

If it has no Bluetooth, then it stands to reason that it has no stereo bluetooth either.

iTunes Ringtones: Buggy as Hell

iTunes Logo

I bought some ringtones yesterday. I’ve bought my fair share of tracks on iTunes, and woke up to find that I could use 13 of them as a ringtone. None of the songs I owned were really ringtone worthy, but I was tired of waking up to Marimba or Strum every day, so I set about turning one lucky song into my morning alarm ringtone. Here are my impressions:

  1. Their waveform editor is not very responsive on PowerPC macs with tons of RAM
  2. The checkout process is buggy; I had two songs in my iTunes cart when I purchased my ringtone. iTunes purchased them, but did not download them. I’m glad there are ‘report problems’ links in the billing emails.
  3. After purchasing the song, I synced it over to my iPhone. I was informed in an error message that the song wouldn’t transfer because this computer wasn’t authorized. So I played the song to authorize it (and got the message that I had now authorized this song on 3 computers. What?), and then I was able to sync the ringtone over.

In other words, it’s buggy. The entire experience is as far from “the Apple way” as it can possibly get. There aren’t a lot of songs available yet. And it’s buggy. I hope there’s an update soon to address some of the bugs. I definitely won’t be trying this again until an update comes out. In case you’re wondering if I’m suggesting perhaps a less annoying method to get songs on your iPhone, perhaps I am. Perhaps could one just use a program that automates the free iTunes hack, like MakeiPhoneRingtone from Rogue Amoeba?

iPod Touch Has Bluetooth?

iPod Touch with bluetooth icon

Why would an iPod Touch need Bluetooth? I mean, the only purpose I can think of offhand for Bluetooth is Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)… and there’s no way that they’d put stereo bluetooth in just the iPod touch, since that’s not even their “best” iPod, Steve Jobs consistently says that’s the iPhone’s honor… hmmmm.

Review: SPE Headphone Adapter for Apple iPhone

Img 0162-1

The iPhone’s recessed headphone jack has been a headache for those who prefer to use their own headphones instead of the stock Apple headphones. The new Smartphone Experts Headphone Adapter ($9.95) solves that problem handily — and without sticking out too far either.

Review: Aquapac Waterproof Pro Sports Case

Part 1 of 2

aquapac store photo

No bones about it, the Aquapac Waterproof Pro Sports Case (store link, $34.95) isn’t a pretty case. It’s a pretty ugly case. You don’t wear the Aquapac to the beauty pageant though, so this review is less about aesthetics and more about form.

Review: Belkin Sport Armband

2573
figure 1: the Belkin Sport Armband. Note the absence of the holes by the key slot

I quit smoking over a year ago. I didn’t like how expensive it all was (a pack a day gets expensive quick), so I started rolling my own cigarettes; which is probably way worse for you. I liked smoking, but I knew I had to quit. I was going to be moving in to a house, meaning my tiny little monthly rent was going to jump up to a ginormous monthly mortgage. So I quit. Boy, did that suck. I mean, it sucked at first. Eventually I was done with smoking and that’s great, nothing bad about that. Except for the 30 pounds I packed on. The charts don’t say I’m overweight, but I started running anyway. It’s either that or buy a whole bunch of pants.

I can do a mile without killing myself, so that’s great. It takes a while; long enough that I sometimes wish for music or podcasts as I jog. But, I’m not really excited about dumping an iPhone to flop around in my running shorts. Ergo, the need for the Belkin Sport Armband case (store link, $24.95).
