Accessory Review: Jawbone Bluetooth Headset

Jawbone frontThere are bluetooth headsets a’plenty out there in the world of mobility. Anything is fair game from tiny headsets that fit in your ear to monstrous behemoths that attach to the side of your face like a Borg. I have the had the pleasure of using the Jawbone bluetooth headset for some time now. I also have used other headsets quite regularly such as Apple’s bluetooth headset and a Motorola H700C. The iPhone Blog has also reviewed the Sony Ericsson HBH-PV705 and the Plantronics Discovery 665 recently. These headsets come in all shapes and sizes and they all claim to do something “special”. There has been a lot of press about this device. Does it live up to the hype? Or is it simply just another over-sized headset that blends in with a crowded marketplace. Let’s take a look…

Review: iFlickr, Native App-a-Week

Are you one of those people who love Flickr? The ease-of-use, best-in-class community, and (for pro users) unlimited storage space? Well I actually am one of those people. I love my Flickr. And the iPhone plays really nice with Flickr in part because of Flickr’s ability to upload pictures through E-mail. Take a picture. E-mail to Flickr. And it’s posted.

But for jailbroken iPhones there is another method that is in ways much more integrated. This Week’s Native App-a-Week will take a look at this program, iFlickr. iFlickr is a native app that is dedicated for Flickr uploads. Meaning you take pictures for the pure purpose of posting it to your Flickr account. How does it work? Is it more effective than the current iPhone Camera->E-mail->Flickr set up?

Weekly Web App Review: JiveTalk

A lot of people have criticized the fact that there isn’t a Mobile iChat or any other Instant Messaging program on the iPhone. From a technological standpoint, there is absolutely no reason for it to be missing. Also, an IM client is a common offering among smartphones and feature phones alike. A IM program is often very useful to quickly stay in touch with your contacts and well, for ‘instant’ communication.

The Web App JiveTalk from Beejive, a company who makes the similar program and uber-popular JiveTalk for Blackberry, is the answer for those who need a chat program but aren’t ready to jailbreak their iPhones. How does it perform? Should you give it a go?

Review: IntelliScreen, Native App-a-Week

Can’t wait any longer for Native Apps? Me neither. (Late) June seems too far away? I’m with you. So why wait, when you can jailbreak! Over the next couple weeks before 2.0 is released, I’ll give you guys a glimpse into the jailbroken world of native apps every week. Plus: let’s face it, Jailbreaking isn’t going anywhere. The SDK is awesome, but some people won’t settle for anything less than full-on access to all the hidden bits of the iPhone.

In this week’s edition, we’ll take a look at a nifty little program called IntelliScreen. The idea behind this native app is smart, it creates a ‘Today’ screen for your iPhone’s unlock screen. Much like certain layout options in Windows Mobile and Blackberry, Intelliscreen offers a quick look at your calendar, mail, SMS, news, and weather. How well does this native app perform? Does it offer a great feature for users?

iPhone vs. BlackBerry Bold: Hands On (and Wait-a-Thon)

What happens when your Sister Site, CrackBerry.com, manages to score a BlackBerry Bold on eBay? What happens after they do their hands-on images, videos, and walkthroughs, that is? What happens is they start sending the beast around the the office. So here we have a full gallery comparing the iPhone and the BlackBerry Bold. Head to head images comparing size, UI, web browser (though that one’s not quite fair since the Bold’s web browser ain’t anywhere near complete yet), and of course media capabilities.

Also after the break, a video walkthrough of the two devices. We’ve made fun of RIM’s claim that the Bold isn’t an iClone and now that I’m looking at the two devices side by side on my desk, that fun-making is half-true. Yes, they’re different, but the metallic bezel around the edge of a glossy black face sure says “iPhone” to me.

More thoughts and comparisons after the break. What are you waiting for? Read on!

Review: iGrip Universal Vent Car Mount

If you’re like me, you have absolutely no clue where to put your iPhone when driving. If I keep it in my pocket, when I get a call I’ll have to struggle to take it out. Do I put it in the cupholder? Ah, I have drinks there. Should I put it in the passenger seat? It might slide off when I make a turn.

Well this dilemma is easily solved with the iGrip Universal Vent Car Mount ($19.95). This car mount solution offers easy access to your iPhone and manages to offer protection with some soft cushioning on the sides. How does the iGrip Universal Vent Car Mount perform?

Review: Sketches, Native App-a-Week

Can’t wait any longer for Native Apps? Me neither. (Late) June seems too far away? I’m with you. So why wait, when you can jailbreak! Over the next couple months before 2.0 is released, I’ll give you guys a glimpse into the jailbroken world of native apps every week. Plus: let’s face it, Jailbreaking isn’t going anywhere. The SDK is awesome, but some people won’t settle for anything less than full-on access to all the hidden bits of the iPhone.

Designed by the folks over at Nullriver, Sketches puts a modern spin on a timeless classic. The premise of the app is simple: it turns your iPhone into a 21st century etch-a-sketch complete with multiple colors, varying lines, shapes, and you got it, a little shake of the iPhone to erase. How does it perform? Is it more than just a gimmick program?

Read on for the rest of the review! (and remember you’ll need a Jailbroken iPhone to take advantage of this native app)
