Updated Again! App Store Redux: 10 Million Downloaded, but Are they Well Coded?

Jobs Speaks About App Store

The App Store went live last week (what day exactly depends on whether you snuck in to iTunes 7.7 and snooped around on your own, or waited for the official links to surface), tying in to the iPhone 3G and 2.0 software launches. How’d it do? According to Steve Jobs:

“The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days. Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”

Probably why Apple has finally started putting a dent in its backlog of developer acceptances, eh? But is all happy in App Land? Nope. Find out why after the break…

App Review: Remote for iTunes + Apple TV

Apple\'s Remote for iTunes + Apple TV

Epic YES! Since the moment the original iPhone came out with its WiFi goodness, I’ve been begging asking for a way to use the iPhone to control the similarly connected iTunes, Front Row, and Apple TV. And now Apple has answered! (Er… except for Front Row, see below). And not only for the iPhone. While I’ll use that term exclusively below, everything here also applies to the iPod Touch.

Remote is FREE, and available either via iTunes (picture above) or right from your iPhone 3G via the App Store. It’s not hard to find, currently dominating the Top Free Apps charts. If you’re not sure how to use App Store yet, check out Brian’s excellent overview to get you started.

I chose to download directly from the iPhone so I could test out the 3G experience. It was fast. (However, when I later synced back with iTunes — my first time post App download — I was asked to re-authenticate my MacBook with the iTunes Store before it would sync the App for backup).

How did it work? Read on!

iTunes 7.7 Live! 500 Apps! 90% Under $10! 25% Free! + Jobs Speaks!

Jobs Speaks About App Store

Steve Jobs only speaks to the media when he has to, when he launches an iPod, the iPhone, the MacBook Air… the App Store. Here’s what he just said to USA Today:

“This is the biggest launch of my career.”

From the man who brought us the Apple II and the Mac? Really? That’s a lot of faith in what some are calling the next major platform. And it looks like Jobs isn’t taking any chances. Heck, it looks like he’s positively stacking the deck:

500 Apps in the Store at launch. 450 of them under $10. 125 of them FREE.

Of course, to enjoy these Apps, you’ll need iTunes 7.7. It’s live now, just crank up Apple’s Software Update or go to Apple.com for the direct download!

Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home – a free download from the App Store.

You’ll need iPhone firmware 2.0 as well, unfortunately, so that means we’re still waiting for another big drop… and/or an iPhone 3G!

UPDATE: According to MacRumors, while the App Store proper is not visible yet in iTunes, APPS ARE!!! To find them, just search for their names (or parts thereof), i.e. AOL, Remote, etc.

(And YES! Apple’s iTunes Remote is there, and it works with iTunes and Apple TV!)

Non-Disclosure Expiring? [Redacted] Retracted? App Store to Launch Today?!

iPhone 3G 2.0 SDK 3rd Party Apps Rumor Roundup

Since the iPhone SDK launch in March, developers accepted into the program have been bound via NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) to Apple-institutionalized uber-secrecy (leading one noted developer to cleverly refer to the SDK as [REDACTED] on Twitter). Tech Crunch says, like .Mac, that may end later today:

Apple finally let developers know when their iPhone apps will be live on the App Store for users to download and use: around 9 am PST Thursday morning. That, at least, is when the embargo lifts and press can start writing about the specific applications. Presumably the App Store will go live, along with iPhone 2.0 software in general, around that time.

So get ready to push-update your new MobileMe calendars and launch your iTunes 7.7, because it looks like the App Store cometh. (Thanks again, New Zealand!) In a few short hours, we may just know who made it into the launch party. (And Dieter, Brian, and Casey may be slap-fighting over who gets to rock Super Monkey Ball first — at least until they add network multiplayer :) )

iPhone 3G 2.0 SDK 3rd Party Apps Rumor Roundup

This is it. We’re in the home stretch. Golden goal, all or nothing, and Steve Jobs kicking it high and to the side. In 2 days we find out if Apple gets the world cup, the two-peat for smartphone (even gadget) championship, or if they send it flying over the post with their mostly evolutionary, not so much revolutionary, next generation handset.

Saturday we mentioned one big change: the fast 3G data chip. Sunday it was GPS. Monday we tackled the 2.0 Firmware update. Tuesday we detailed the rebirth of .Mac: MobileMe. Today we’re looking at the mother load, App Store.
