The Apple iPhone Bluetooth Headset is now available for pre-order. This in-ear headset is ridiculously light, .23oz (!), and it gets surprisingly good battery life (5.5 hours) for a device of that size. I’m guessing it doesn’t have digital sound processing at that weight, as DSP munches battery life in serious fashion. I’ll guess we may pay a premium for those extra cables and dock too, but it also might just be extra cost for the miniaturization. Oh well, time to pre-order.

Apple first attempt at a communications device wasn’t quite so elegant. But it did have a touchscreen.

So, after twelve hours of waiting in line, it didn’t take me long to take the iPhone out and start playing around with it. I didn’t get the zip and seal treatment that some folks got at AT&T stores, but then again, the MOA was trying to zip people through as efficiently as possible. Here are my impressions, there will be a full review later with video and pictures.

David Pogue is tired of answering your stupid questions, so he published a list of stupidly asked questions that he hopes will finally shut you up. Some interesting tidbits revealed in his FAQ include
- You CAN’T USE a screen protector on the screen – it requires direct contact with fingertips to work. That means no stylus access either.
- iPhone cannot be used as attached storage device, like an iPod. So you can forget about using iPhone as an expensive USB thumbdrive. Sorry.
- Safari bookmarks on your Mac (and PC) can be synced with iPhone. That’s good news.
- iPhone’s Bluetooth radio can only be paired with its headset, and nothing else. NOTHING else.

According to a blurb posted on Apple’s Retail site, Apple stores will close at 2 PM local time and reopen at 6 PM local time. Here’s the relevant blurb:
Apple retail stores will be closed on June 29 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to get ready for the premiere of iPhone. We’ll open the doors again at 6:00 p.m., when you can be one of the first to see, try, and buy the iPhone. Be sure to arrive early — iPhone is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

It fascinates me that Apple’s marketing and commercial videos for the iPhone so far has also been all training. They show the iPhone being used for the main tasks that people will use, and that’s it. The interface is good enough that it sells itself and doubles as a training video, which is brilliant.
They really want you to be able to use the device without you ever getting the Glazed Eye or the Thousand Yard Stare.

God and Satan join forces to bring Microsoft Exchange Hell spawn DirectPush support to iPhone, offering all the benefits of Windows Mobile (and then some) to Jesus phone users. This according to Mary Jo Foley at Zdnet.
Here’s what I’m hearing: Apple will announce this week — possibly as soon as June 27 — that it has licensed the Exchange ActiveSync licensing protocol. Via the licensing arrangement, Apple iPhone users will be able to connect to Exchange Server and make use of its wireless messaging and synchronization capabilities.
This will no doubt elicit a loud HUZZAH! from those of you that use a hosted Exchange service, like myself. Though personally I’m thinking of dumping the Microsoft ecosystem and using a mashup of various solutions like Google apps + .Mac.
