Busy week for TiPb in the media! Smartphone Experts Editor-in-Chief Dieter Bohn joined CNN’s Richard Quest on Quest Means Business yesterday to talk about the Latest smartphones
iPhone 3G S, Palm Pre, and “any of the others” are discussed. Give it a watch!
We’ll be talking about the iPhone vs. the Palm Pre tonight on iPhone Live! (Hopefully with some special guests!). In the meantime our editor-in-chief, Dieter Bohn, writing on behalf of our sibling site, PreCentral.net, points to Engadget’s in-depth coverage. Dieter’s conclusion on calls the “Potential Palm Pre Patent Portfolio Pugilism Puzzle”?
Do Apple and Palm (which is increasingly Apple-esque after their recent hires) have the kind of corporate attitude necessary to just swallow their pride and accept that there’s space at the top of the hill for two smartphones, each licensing their patents to each other? If you take a look at the sorts of statements that Roger McNamee made in this Kara Swisher interview, you’ll see that the answer for Palm is clearly yes. They’ve said for a long time that they expect that there will be plenty of space for everybody in the smartphone market, nobody needs to fail for them to succeed. Will Apple be able to play nice too?
Reads like the haughty days of cold war mutually assured destruction to us, so we have to ask: Will Chairman Jobs push the button?
(Any answer beginning with “you’re goram right he will!” gets double comment points!)
Okay, well, only for the first few seconds at the very beginning when Dieter proves HTC pretty much made a point of matching the iPhone 3G form factor exactly. Same height. Same width. Same depth. Of course, it’s plastic resistive screen isn’t the same as the glass capacitive screen of the iPhone — it’s 800×480! (Compared to the iPhone’s 480×320), and it packs an auto-focus 5 megapixel camera… (Along with TouchFlo 3D, about which we’ve done video all our own…)
Now, HTC has said that this device isn’t coming to the US, but TiPb is still hoping Apple rises up an matches at least some of the Touch HD’s specs with an iPhone HD of their very own. HTC’s already shown the hardware can fit the package, and Apple’s already shown they can deliver the content…
We’re just saying…
(Make sure you watch the video through to its bitter-sweet ending. We laughed, we cried, we created a new beverage game around watch-spotting…)
The iPhone 3G doesn’t have a task manager. It doesn’t have a registry. It doesn’t have a sliding keyboard. It doesn’t have a start menu. It doesn’t have Pocket IE. And most egregiously of all — it doesn’t have a stylus!
Will that be the feature that breaks our Editor-in-Chief’s Windows Mobile back? Or will the ultra-modern OS and buttery smooth UI restore his childlike sense of wonder? Head on over to WMExperts to read his ultimate opinion, and — if he deserves it — give him a bag of hurt, TiPb style!
Be sure to comment both here and on Dieter’s review — on all of our sites — so you can try to win as many smartphones and accessory bundles as possible!
What’s next? Crackberry Kevin gets my beloved iPhone this week! Will he even know how to type on a touchscreen? (No Storm jokes!). He’s asking for your assistance in TiPb’s iPhone Forum, so you get another chance to win over in his thread. And I’m off to WMExperts for the (gulp!) HTC FUZE. Help me!
Says Dieter, horned WMExperts hat firmly in place:
The real story between Windows Mobile and the iPhone platform is this: the iPhone has elegance while Windows Mobile has power, versatility, and openness. It’s that last one that’s clearly becoming a bigger factor in my mind as time goes on (as it is with the entire the entire WMExperts Team). Podcast downloading is the touchstone example of the moment, but there are plenty of others. I’ll get into it quite a bit more in the final review, but for now, sit back and watch my video first take.
Is he right? And if he is, do we want to live in a world so wrong? Go on over and tell him what you think!
Remember, each SPE site is giving away their signature smartphone and accessories, so it’s not just an iPhone 3G up for grabs! Every day you comment on Dieter’s video, or my thread in the TreoCentral Forum, you get two more chances to win a smartphone (and accessories!)
