Yet Another AT&T Outage?

Say it is not so AT&T. Another outage seemed to take place this morning, mostly effecting the East coast this time. It was a little over a week ago where myself and Dieter, in the Midwest, noticed something was a little off – to say the least – with our service. Both data and voice were effected then. In the end, that was blamed on a power failure.

Today, here in the Midwest, all is well. But it seems like a lot of East coast customers have some major issues with their data. So all you East coast readers, are you back surfing the web on your beloved iPhone? Or are you still sitting there lost with no data service?

Maybe this has something to do with the recent reports of AT&T beefing up their 3G network? Never the less, hopefully everything is now back to normal!

Let us know!

Macworld: Direct Music Downloads for the iPhone via 3G (Updated: and EDGE!)

During his Macworld Keynote (see our MASSIVE Live blog!), Phil Schiller today announced the death of the iPhone (and iPod Touch) WiFi Music Store — and the birth of the WiFi and 3G Music Store!

Yup, iPhone 3G users can now browser and directly download music over the data network for anywhere, anytime access to new music.

UPDATE: Daring Fireball says downloads work over 2G/EDGE as well!

It seems to already be working, and working in multiple countries (including Canada! Yay!)

Have you downloaded any music directly to your iPhone yet? How did it work for you?

AT&T Tethering Plans to Drop This Week?

Back in November Dieter told us about the Evil Empires (AT&T) plan to drain another $30 from all of it’s iPhone owners if they wanted to tether with a laptop. Well according to TUAW this may be the week you have all been waiting for.

It’s been under the rumor banner for some time now, but we’ve been told by a trusted source that the long-awaited AT&T iPhone-as-modem tethering plans (preliminary details in MacBlogz’ post from November: 5 GB data cap, $30/month supplementary cost) may be ready for prime time during Macworld Expo this week. The tethering announcement might not rise to a keynote-worthy level; it could simply be publicized as a press release during the show.

So what will you get for your $30 a month??? 5 GB data cap… A bit steep don’t you think? Then again would you expect anything else from AT&T? I know the few times I would actually be tethering, I’d willing to take that risk on the Jailbroken app. Are you willing to pay that much for this service or are you more willing to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G and roll the dice with a program such as PdaNet?

Sound off in the comments!

Let the iPhone 3G Unlocking Begin! Dev Team Releases yellowsn0w Cydia Installer package

If you have been living under a rock for the past few months, you might not have heard all the talk about unlocking iPhone 3G. Well the time is officially here, the iPhone Dev Team has released the latest software unlock for iPhone 3G!!! It is only available on a Jailbroken iPhone 3G via the Cydia Installer and is to be used on the latest firmware with the newest baseband!

Dev Team update from their blog:

The unlock about to be released works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. [...] Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.

So who will be the first to give this a try? If you do, be sure to comment and let us know how it goes!

iPhone 3G Unlock Still Pending — Will Unlock OS 2.2/Baseband 02.28.00!

While the Dev Team still hasn’t released the final iPhone 3G software Unlock, they certainly aren’t taking New Year off. In addition to squashing some last minute permission errors, they have an extra-special surprise for 2009:

The soft unlock has undergone many changes in the last two days. The most significant one: the soft unlock will now be only for baseband 02.28.00 (the most recent baseband).

Jeremy is keeping an eye on all the details and will be bring us word as soon soon as the Unlock is live.

So, even if it’s a beta, who’s going for it?

Reminder: iPhone 3G Unlock Due TODAY!

iPhone 2.0 Jailbreak and Unlock Pirate

Jeremy posted this earlier in the month and linked to the video, and he’ll be back again when the iPhone 3G Unlock goes live, but until then, we just wanted to remind everyone (who’s never updated their iPhone from OS 2.0!) that today is supposed to be the day!

Well it is now official, the Dev-Team has updated their blog today to let you all know when the iPhone 3G software unlock will be released. Seems as if New Years eve is what they are aiming for.

  • The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
  • This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
  • The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.

Guess Times Square won’t be the only massive countdown going on today!

Walmart Selling iPhone 3G Starting Today

Well the day that has been oh so talked about here at TiPb has finally come. The black 8GB iPhone 3G model for $197, and the 16GB black or white model for $297. So much for those $99 rumors although, you will save a measly $2 compared to buying it at Apple or Best Buy (though AT&T does have the 8GB for $99 refurbished).

So pick your poison. If you do happen to pick one up at your local Walmart, please share your experience in the comments!
