The developer of Cydia, Jay Freeman, wants to take his creation to the next level. Freeman wants to turn the jailbroken app manager into a direct competitor of Apple’s official App Store. For anyone not familiar with Cydia, what it does is act as a jailbroken application gateway. Every single jailbroken application out there is found via Cydia.

Currently, there are paid apps within Cydia but they require the use of Paypal and unlocking keys. Those are all set up by the developers of the apps themselves. Having an organized jailbreak apps “app store” would be ideal but it could also give Apple the nudge to really start going after the jailbreaking community. It wasn’t long ago Apple claimed jailbreaking to be illegal.

According to Gizmodo, Freeman has already hired a lawyer. And TiPb thinks its for good reason… Now we all wait for a official response from Apple…

[Ed: We might have already seen the game plan in Apple vs. Psystar and the "John Doe" filings which may target the Hackintosh community -- Rene).

As our forums keep gaining more and more members the threads just keep getting better. Here are some of the latest and greatest Jailbreak-related threads from the forums today!

The first thread is a pretty straight forward poll, are you Jailbroken or not? As of right now the amount of members Jailbroken are way ahead of those who choose not to. So what about you?

Next thread comes to us from BKSinAZ, and he asked the following question. If he is using AT&T, is there any reason to jailbreak? I’m sure all of our readers who are currently Jailbroken can give BKSinAZ some reasons on why he should.

A lot has been said recently about the legality of Jailbreaking your iPhone. So is it a surprise that there are a few threads revolving around that topic? Be sure to check these two threads out: Jailbreak Illegal – What now? Restore? and Apple Says Jailbreaking is Illegal.

For everything that is Jailbreaking Apps… be sure to check out the forums iPhone Jailbreak Apps section. You will just begin to scratch the surface of what is exactly available to you.

In order to discuss these topics on TiPb forums you must be registered, which you can do right here, and it will only take a minute of your time.

See you on the forums!

With all of this Jailbreak talk going on lately, what better time to let all of you wanna-be Jailbreakers know that all of our how to guides are completely up to date for firmware 2.2.1. For some people, getting into the world of Jailbreaking can be confusing and that is completely understandable. TiPb wants to make it as cut and dry as humanly possible for you. So here we go.

So you have a iPhone 3G that you will want to unlock? Ok, in order for that to happen you must use our preserving baseband guide which can be found here. Currently only Mac users can use this method, sorry Windows faithful. It is also important to note that you must be on anything but the 2.2.1 firmware (2.2 or earlier) in order to be able to unlock your iPhone 3G with the Dev Teams Yellowsn0w.

Ok, here is another one for all of the Mac users out there. You have a first generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G and all you care about is simply Jailbreaking. Well then you would use the Mac QuickPWN method. It is important to remember, use this method only if you are not interested in unlocking your iPhone.

No, we have not forgotten about Windows how to guides. You say you have a first generation iPhone that you want Jailbroken and unlocked? This is the guide you would use to get that taken care of right here.

iPhone 3G owners who want to Jailbreak, it is pretty simply – check out this guide and you are good to go.

So there you have it, all of TiPb how to guides updated for 2.2.1.

Let me start out by saying none of us here at TiPb condone any type of piracy. You think you deserve to get paid at the end of the day for your work? So do developers and their hungry children.

That being said, Apple must be saying Uh-Oh right about now. Crackulous, which is now available via Cydia, enables you to strip the protection off most apps from the App Store. What this simply means is if a single person purchases an app, he or she can put the app out there — for free — for anyone who has a Jailbroken iPhone to grab.

Of course, it was simply a matter of time before someone in the Jailbreak community came up with an app such as Crackulous, and we can just imagine how many new Jailbreak artists there will be because of this new app.

You can pretty much count on the fact that Apple is already addressing this issue with a FairPlay (their DRM that wraps all iTunes App Store apps) fix that will turn up in the next software update. Another cat and mouse game has just been born.

[Via Engadget Mobile, thanks to themurdock for the tip]

Well here is yet one more attempt to get cut/copy and paste going via a Jailbroken app from iSpazio. Clippy inserts two buttons into the iPhone system keyboard, one for copying and the other for pasting. One major gripe is that it only accepts user-entered text. So there is no copying any text from web sites or emails, etc…

It’s very easy to use this app. Once installed, start typing text, then select it with your finger, and tap the “123″ key to show a new line at the top of your keyboard. Now tap copy and then enjoy yourself to paste your text in every other app you want!

Again, this app is available for free if you have a Jailbroken iPhone. To try it out, simply go to the iSpazio Repository in Cydia and download it straight to your phone. While this app is not perfect, it is a much better attempt than the previous tries

So you’re still debating whether or not to jailbreak your iPhone? Hopefully after reading this you will have made your decision. Back in October we brought to you the first Top 5 Must-Have Jailbreak Apps, well today we bring you round two of the series. Now keep in mind, all the seasoned veterans of Jailbreaking will or should know about all the apps listed here. This article is for the sole purpose of swaying those still on the fence to the darkside…

***All of the following apps can be downloaded via Cydia on your Jailbroken iPhone.

Read on after the jump!

1. PDAnet

Yes, this one was covered fully by Dieter, but this app seems to definitely be super popular in the Jailbreak community. PDAnet will use your iPhone as a Wi-Fi router that you can connect to with your laptop to browse the internet. Do you want to get stuck paying AT&T $30 for tethering services for some causal browsing? Didn’t think so… so head over to check out our full guide on how to set up PDAnet. You’ll be surfing in no time!

Be sure to heed Dieter’s warning when using this app:

There is one major caveat you need to be aware of with PdaNet: the Terms of Service on the standard AT&T iPhone contract (and also on their standard Data Plans) do not allow you to tether. Most people simply ignore this and go ahead and tether anyway — being careful not to overdo it might prevent AT&T from hitting you with extra fees or even a cancellation.

2. Cycorder

So the lack of common features of other phones really aggravates you? Say the lack of video recording on a device that is geared towards multimedia? Yeah, we can see how that one is pretty disappointing. Well thanks to the Jailbreaking community you now to can record video with your iPhone with Cycorder. Recording in .mov format, Cycorder gets anywhere from 7-15 frames per second along with supporting audio! To get Cycorder simply go into Cydia and you will see it on the “Featured Packages” list on the front page.

For more information and details please visit our post on this free video recorder – Cycorder.

3. Status Notifier

In the forums lately a few of you have asked me about a program that notifies you of incoming messages, missed calls, voice mails, calendar alerts, etc… Well there is one simple answer to that, Status Notifier.

4. SBsettings

This next app also addresses a common complaint that we hear a lot regarding the iPhone. I don’t know how many times I personally have seen “Is there any way to turn Wi-Fi off/on without going through all those steps?” on the forums. The answer – SBsettings. Now take that one step further, how about screen brightness? Toggle bluetooth on and off with a single button on the home screen anyone? Edge and 3G? You get the idea… Try it out!

5. Qik

Another area that iPhone customers get the short end of the stick on is streaming live media. Until now that is. Let me introduce you to a little app called Qik. Qik offers iPhone users access to internet video streaming over their cellular network. Be sure to check the Qik link above to get yourself up and streaming over the internet!

Conclusion

Hopefully after reading this you are finally off the fence and will either Jailbreak or simply decide it isn’t for you. If you do jailbreak, this list of must-have jailbroken apps should keep you busy for some time.
The forums continue to grow and today we have a few interesting threads that you should not miss.

Sturamsden started a thread that asks the question I’m sure a lot of people who do not currently own an iPhone may be asking: should I wait until the next generation iPhone comes out before I make my purchase? To see what type of advice he is getting please head on over to his thread, how close is the next gen iPhone?

Next we have forum member Dizzy, he seemed to be having some battery life issues after the 2.2 firmware update. I know I had some similar issues after the 2.1 update, is anyone else having similar battery drain problems with the 2.2 firmware?

The next thread will help a lot of you out there looking to add ring tones to your iPhones. It was started a while back by cjvitek: Want to make your own ringtones but you don’t want to have to pay for them? Well if the answer is yes, then please check out that thread. All the information you need is contained in the link.

Finally we have a whole sub forum dedicated to jailbreaking and we’d like to point it out to all of you interested. It seems jailbreaking has gone to the next level with the 2.2 firmware and I urge anyone interested to check this sub forum out now! It can easily be found right here in Jailbreak Central. I see a lot of you are asking questions on the front page, if you have not found your answer there you will sure to get the help you need in our forums. For those of you who are jailbroken, we want some feedback from you. What are your top 10 favorite jailbroken apps? Even if it’s your top 5, that will do. Thanks!

To get in on the action all you need to do is register. It won’t cost you anything and it’s a painless process. So what are you waiting for?!

See you on the forums!

Now does this really come as a surprise to anyone out there? Well it comes as no surprise for all of us here at TiPb that the Dev Team has jailbroken the latest 2.2 firmware beta released by Apple to developers. Not too shabby, and it should make all of you out there happy to know that the wait to jailbreak the 2.2 firmware will not be long! Short and painless. Now remember this is a beta right now so Apple may make some changes that can toss a wrench into the Dev Team’s work but seriously how long would that slow them down? A day or two? Props to the Dev Team, they have yet to let us down.

For all of your jailbreaking needs be sure to check out our dedicated forums on that particular topic, iPhone Jailbreak Central and iPhone Jailbreak Apps.

Did you think we forgot all of you on 1st generation iPhones? Well we here at TiPb have not forgotten any of you! If you have been craving true GPS for you iPhone well here is your chance to grab it while you can.

OrangeGadgets is on the brink of releasing an add on GPS module for the iPhone, the iGPS360. This is excellent news for all of you with 1st generation iPhones… what’s the catch you ask? I’m glad you asked… you have to jailbreak your device for it to work. The reason for this is that Apple has not allowed any 3rd party access to the operating system via the dock connector. So jailbreaking is the only way.

The iGPS360 is now available to order for $75.00. For that price you will also receive a 6ft USB-A to micro USB-B cable for on-the-go or at home charging. According to their website the module begins shipping today. Keep in mind, they are only producing 1000 of these units so if you want GPS, act fast!
