iPhone Isn’t Expensive Enough, Says Expert

gallery8_hires20070621.jpg

And you thought the iPhone was already expensive? Author and Pricing “expert” Rafi Mohammed believes Apple could (and should) have charged more than its current subsidized price of $499 and $599. Sound crazy? I think so too.

What exactly makes him a pricing expert? Was he a former contestant on the Prices Is Right?

Man Waiting for iPhone at NYC Apple Store, Apple Anarchy Apocalypse Week Begins

624133781_0cbe5e6400_b.jpg

When a tipster sent word that some people were already loitering around the Apple Store in NYC I was immediately skeptical. Then I was sent this link and nearly fell on my knees laughing, then later crying as the terrible realization of the implications this has on my prospects of getting an iPhone on Friday. FYI - is it just me or is this guy a tool for taking donations to help him acquire an iPhone, just days before the product launch?

Wait, what am I saying? I can’t talk now, I’m on my way to camp out at the AT&T Wireless store in Fort Wayne Indiana. Goodbye!

Breaking: iPhone Shipments Now Arriving Across the US

ups.jpg

AppleInsider is reporting that initial volume shipments of iPhone began arriving at drop terminals across the US, in preparation for distribution on Friday. This means iPhone launch plans are on track with no delays in sight.

People familiar with the matter say the intrinsically valuable freight was carried inbound by a certain Hong Kong-based air courier, which services Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. The early arrival is to assure the cargo can clear customs with enough time to handle unexpected delays, those people said. Awaiting the freight at each location on Sunday were armed personnel, who were reportedly hired by Apple through its courier’s ground handling agent and then cleared by the Transportation Security Administration. Armed guards are extremely unusual for freight coming out of the Asian sector, those familiar with the matter explained, and are typically reserved for shipments containing riches such as gold and diamonds.

engadget Posts First Impressions of iPhone from “Sources”

Engadget is posting some new details about the iPhone culled from “sources”.

  • The keyboard was simply described as “disappointing”. Keyboarding with two thumbs often registers multiple key presses (two or three at a time) resulting in a lot of mistakes. The best way to type is with a single finger (as shown in most of Apple’s demos), but two thumbs is supposedly very difficult. After trying it for a number of days our source gave up using their thumbs.
  • The text auto-correction only works well for simple words, but doesn’t work for proper names. We can only assume this bit will get better with time as Apple fills out its predictive text dictionary.
  • “It won’t replace a BlackBerry. It’s not good for text input. It’s just not a business product.”
  • The touchscreen was said to, in general, require somewhat hard presses to register input, and needs some getting used to.
  • In addition to its dock, the iPhone comes packaged with a polishing cloth (the thing’s supposedly a fingerprint magnet, no surprise) and the usual smallish power adapter.
  • The Bluetooth headset will debut in the $120 range, and will come with its own dock for charging both the phone and the headset. The headset will feature a miniature magnetic charging interface á la MagSafe.
  • The Bluetooth headset has a hidden LED and is supposedly a very small and elegant device. Sound quality is said to be “typical”. There is no clip; like many headsets you’re expected to just let it hang out of your ear, as previously shown.
  • The browser “worked well” but page load speeds on EDGE were just as slow as expected. It sounds like 3G users will have a tough run with this.
  • Users must scroll through the address book (or use the alphabet-drag on the side) — one cannot bring up the keyboard and type in a name, as many of us are used to.
  • Shocker: YouTube over EDGE didn’t work well at all, and will basically necessitate use of WiFi.

AT&T Charging $175 Contract Termination Fee on iPhone

money-bag.pngFrom the Department of Highway Robbery comes word that AT&T will be impossing an additional $175 early termination fee for customers who back out of their contract. Ouch!

Granted, early termination sanctions are nothing new in the wireless industry. Many years ago I once had to pony up $300 to free myself from the shackles of Centennial Wireless (a carrier I recommend avoiding), so this is nothing new. But this story points out the unrestricted power that carriers extend over enslaved customers. Rather like our our government, wouldn’t you say?

Hang on a sec, there’s a knock at my door. Some nice gentlemen in a black van just pulled into my driveway. Be right back…

Apple employees are setting up a mysterious iPhone display that looks more like a prop from Stanley Kubrick’s Monolith than an iPhone model. Thanks to Andrew for sending me this tip (and pics).

AT&T Discloses iPhone Crowd Control Strategy, with Bullets and Shoes

iphonelaunch.jpg

I’m less concerned about making my way through lines and more worried what will happen to me once I exit the store with iPhone in hand. I don’t fancy having my new iPhone jacked by some street thug lurking around the parking lot, waiting to swoop down on unsuspecting victims as they approach their vehicles.

What AT&T needs more than anything is a constable standing outside its store to ensure that customers make it safely back to their cars.

Apple and Nintendo Partnering to Develop iPhone Games?

Oh boy. My hands are already sweating…

“With the iPhone days away from being launched Nintendo has apparently begun working with Apple, licensing a limited amount of content for the new phone,” Noheat.com reports. Noheat reports, “These exclusive games will be released on the iTunes Store at a $29.00 price point a few months after the iPhone launches. No word on whether Nintendo will be distributing iPod versions of these games.”
