Installer.app for 2.0 is Coming Soon

Installer.app, the app store before that other app store, is coming back for firmware 2.0 and being re-fashioned as Installer 4. Currently, jailbroken 2.0 iPhones are using Cydia as their main app pipeline but when Installer 4 is released, well, they’ll likely play nice with one another and especially nice with that other app store.

The RiP Dev Blog has a lot of complicated, programmer’s type language describing the updates for Installer 4.0 so I’ll try to translate to more understandable, layman’s terms: It’s going to be faster, safer, and more integrated. Bang.

The release of Installer 4.0 seems to be imminent but well, really, there’s no rush, many of the apps that were available for 1.1.x aren’t quite ready for the big time yet. So take your time with Installer 4.0. We here at TiPb would almost always prefer a little delayed polished product over a rushed, rough, not as advertised..yeah, we’re looking at you MobileMe.

iTunes 7.7 Live! 500 Apps! 90% Under $10! 25% Free! + Jobs Speaks!

Jobs Speaks About App Store

Steve Jobs only speaks to the media when he has to, when he launches an iPod, the iPhone, the MacBook Air… the App Store. Here’s what he just said to USA Today:

“This is the biggest launch of my career.”

From the man who brought us the Apple II and the Mac? Really? That’s a lot of faith in what some are calling the next major platform. And it looks like Jobs isn’t taking any chances. Heck, it looks like he’s positively stacking the deck:

500 Apps in the Store at launch. 450 of them under $10. 125 of them FREE.

Of course, to enjoy these Apps, you’ll need iTunes 7.7. It’s live now, just crank up Apple’s Software Update or go to Apple.com for the direct download!

Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home - a free download from the App Store.

You’ll need iPhone firmware 2.0 as well, unfortunately, so that means we’re still waiting for another big drop… and/or an iPhone 3G!

UPDATE: According to MacRumors, while the App Store proper is not visible yet in iTunes, APPS ARE!!! To find them, just search for their names (or parts thereof), i.e. AOL, Remote, etc.

(And YES! Apple’s iTunes Remote is there, and it works with iTunes and Apple TV!)

iPhone Gaming: Quake This!

iphone_gaming.jpg

While we’ve speculated about the huge potential for iPhone/iPod Touch gaming, is it possible we’re still underestimating it?

Pre-SDK, Engadget brings us word — and video — of Quake 3 absolutely shredding Apple’s little hand-hand revolution. Tilt-to-move, touch-to-fire, wi-fi to multi-player, it looks beyond sweet to me, and this is almost certainly still an early-stage, pre-app launch demo. And I’m not even sure it’s coming officially from Carmack and id Software at this point!

But words don’t do it justice. Check out the video after the break!
