Quick App: my6sense “Digital Intuition” RSS Reader for iPhone

my6sense

my6sense [Free - iTunes link] tries to solve one of the biggest problems of the information age — with so much data coming at us so fast, how do we sift through it and find what we need, when we need it? Using what they dub “digital intuition”, my6sense pays attention to the news you read, and then tries to figure out, and present to you, what’s more important.

Transparent on the user end, and displayed in the built-in, full featured RSS reader, my6sense “just works” (we’re guessing using a combination of artificial intelligence algorithms and mythical news pixies). If you give it a try, let us know how well it predicts what you want.

NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone Brings Google Reader Sync

NetNewsWireiPhone2

NetNewsWire [Free with ads - iTunes link] and NetNewsWire Premium [$1.99 - iTunes link] for iPhone, the mobile version of NetNewsWire for Mac and FeedDemon for Windows, have just hit 2.0 and brings a lot of compelling features to the table — especially for RSS geeks:

  • Google Reader sync including Starred items synchronization
  • Twitter integration – send articles as tweets
  • Instapaper integration
  • Latest News view –
  • New article view
  • New up and down arrows for navigating through news list
  • Title and date of most recent item on Feeds screen.
  • Excerpts and dates on news item lists
  • Send articles via email without leaving NetNewsWire

It’s enough that I’m finally going to go all in on Google Reader and NNW 2.0 (at least for the next week — we’ll see if it sticks).

Screens after the break. If you give NetNewsWire 2.0 a go as well, let us know what you think.

Daring Fireball: For iPhone RSS Less is More

I must admit, I’ve stopped using NetNewsWire on my iPhone because I’ve just found it unmanageable. What was an awesome fire hose on my Mac just threatened to drown me on the much smaller machine. Enter Daring Fireball’s John Gruber with some awesome tips on making NetNewsWire on the iPhone far more functional:

What I want in an iPhone feed reader isn’t just a little bit different than what I want in a Mac feed reader, it’s a lot different. So what I did last week was start over from scratch on the iPhone. Rather than going through my full list of feeds and turning some off, I turned them all off, then went through and re-enabled about 20 feeds — the ones I like best, with the highest signal-to-noise ratios, and which would be most enjoyable in those I’m bored, give me something to read moments.

Now NetNewsWire is both snappier for him and more relevant to a mobile experience.

I tried it and I’m loving it. If you give it a try, let me know how it works for you!

NetNewsWire: Web App vs. Native App

People that use RSS often use web-based readers such as Google Reader, Bloglines or NewsGator to view their news feeds. The first two choices are great, but NewsGator has something special on the iPhone; a native app. That’s right, no more web apps for RSS, the “news” has gone native baby!

What is NewsGator Online?

NewsGator is a service for personal and professional social networking. They have different applications on many platforms that bring information together. Google has probably coined it best, “RSS is the inbox for the Web”. Our focus in this review is with NewsGator’s free, personal services for RSS on the iPhone.

NewsGator’s web app for the iPhone is called… NewsGator, I know, original. This web app allows for users of the free NewsGator service to view their RSS feeds in an optimized format on the iPhone. Let’s take a look at how it works. Read the rest of this entry »

Web App Review: Bloglines

Bloglines Features

Reading my news and RSS feeds on the go is important to me. Most people I know use Google Reader, and it is a fantastic desktop web application. However, I find the mobile version really lacking in features and functionality; this is where Bloglines (http://i.bloglines.com) comes in.

Bloglines really takes advantage of Apple’s HIG’s and gives a very integrated environment for your news. Keep in mind that this version of Bloglines is is still in beta…

(Ed Note – We’ve already welcomed Rene Ritchie to the fold, now we welcome Chad Garrett! Chad will be bringing us a software review each week — with any luck at all he’ll be able to move to reviews of real, honest-to-god, Apple-approved native applications very soon! Welcome Chad!)
