iPhone 3G Unlock Watch: Another Step Closer!

I have a funny feeling that sometime shortly after the 2.2 firmware drops, we will see the iPhone 3G software unlock in the next version of the ever so popular PWNage tools from the Dev Team.

They just updated their blog with more good news, the ability to spawn background tasks. Which is great and means they have everything they need for the unlock except for the implementation. Watch the video above for more details.

Keep up the good work guys. Everyone here at TiPb appreciate your work!

Dev Team Warning to Future Unlockers: Don’t Rush to Update to 2.2

Well if this is not a bit of foreshadowing I don’t know what is. The Dev Team just posted a update on their website with a “warning” to would be unlockers.

Update warning! Now for something a bit more serious, we’ve explained about the pros and cons of applying Apple’s updates in the past and we’ve warned against the immediate installation of these updates without knowing what they do to your device. This is indeed true of the iPhone 3G’s upcoming 2.2 release. Installing ‘2.2’ straight away on the iPhone 3G using the iTunes auto-updater could affect your chances of any software unlock in the near future (should one be found and released), so when you see an update in iTunes await our instructions first! Please don’t blindly install the update and then complain about it later ;-)

Did any of you happen to notice the “software unlock in the near future” part? Yeah, so did we here at TiPb. Looks like if you have been waiting for a unlock for the iPhone 3G your patience may be paying off.

Stay tuned in the upcoming few weeks… I think Christmas may be earlier for some of you!

DevTeam iPhone 3G Unlock Update

Apparently, when it comes to working on unlocking the iPhone 3G to run on other carriers, for the iPhone DevTeam, Sunday is funday

So, still no software unlock for the 3G (don’t let the web scams fool you!), but they’re getting closer…

Since Canada has no other GSM carrier, this won’t change much for me locally, but it would make traveling so much easier (change country, change SIM!). How about you? Waiting to get your unlock on?

iPhone-dev Team 3G Unlock Update

Jeremy recently reported that the iPhone-dev Team were inching towards an unlock for the iPhone 3G. This time, the iPhone-dev Team checks in through their blog saying that they have made “significant progress” with the 3G Unlock.

The team modified the baseband of the iPhone 3G and even though it failed the integrity check, it was still running. They state that though running modified code is extremely useful, they still can’t give an accurate time table to when we will see a 3G Unlock. Click the read link to see a video of the process. And let’s hope that the amazing iPhone-dev Team are able to get through.

iPhone-dev Team Getting Closer to 3G Unlock?

Let me first start off by quoting the iPhone-dev Team:

Disclaimer!! This is a purely technical post with no pragmatic use!

Sadly you will not read that they have unlocked the iPhone 3G. They have posted a few updates over the past few months giving us some idea of what is going on with the 3G unlock. It seems they have hit a snag while trying to use a specific exploit. They were able to get the baseband to stop responding to the OS. They then tried to restore the device multiple times to no avail.

Without getting too technical, they were able to fix the issue and even tried to reproduce the issue but had no luck. Reproducing this error would have been a Good Thing and possibly would have gotten the Dev Team one step closer to unlocking the 3G. So, “two steps forward, one step back”.

For all of the technical jargon please check out this the Dev Teams Blog. Good thing is, we all know the iPhone Dev-Team is still hard at work for all of you looking to use your iPhone 3G on a carrier besides AT&T. Have faith, it should only be a matter of time.

Why No iPhone 3G Unlock / New iPod Touch Jailbreak? And 2.2 Already Pwnd?

Did Apple finally bring the hounds to the old iPhone jailbreak/unlock cat and mouse game?

Maybe. It’s been over 2 months and while the miraculous iPhone DevTeam has jailbroken the iPhone 3G, unlocking the device to work on any carrier has thus far eluded them. Likewise, the brand new iPod Touch — which might be a sign of things to come with the next iPhone as well — has proven more resistant to Jailbreaking. Says the DevTeam:

the 3G iPhone soft unlock and iPod Touch 2G jailbreak are still relatively new challenges (compare them with the timeframe of the iPhone challenges last year). We’re making slow advances on both fronts, but it’s not the sort of thing that can be easily described in a blog like this. But, to maybe show how interlinked these challenges are, this weekend we’ll be trying some hardware based ideas on the iPod Touch 2G jailbreak :)

It’s not all doom and gloom, however, as the DevTeam also elaborates a little on iPhone 2.2 “Timberline”, confirms it’s still vulnerable to pwnage, and shows it running Terminal.app.

Clever.

iPhone 3G Unlocked? Yessim!

Hmm. YESSIM has claimed that they can unlock iPhone 3Gs using a YESSIM SIM card for all the unlocking purposes. They have video-proof complete with convoluted instructions and a dodgy FAQ on their website. The Sim Unlock was developed in Europe and requires a jailbroken iPhone 3G. Are we taking this with an ordinary grain of salt or a Mt. Everest sized one?

What raises TiPb’s eyebrow is the fact that their website has common spelling and grammatical errors. Plus it seems like they’re pimping their product more than showing the process. But hardware Sim Unlocks do seem to be from foreign countries and use some mysterious, voodoo magic to unlock the iPhone. So I guess if they’re right, we can forgive them for everything.

What do you think? Is this legit? Or should we wait until a non-SIM Unlock method?

Job Listing: iPhone Security Engineer aka iPhone Hacker

So a new employment opportunity popped up at Apple’s job listings the other day and Apple is looking for an experienced iPhone Security Engineer to create “proof of concept” attacks on current security mechanisms and provide risk analysis of potential security threats. Basically, Apple needs an iPhone Hacker to prevent future jailbreaks, unlocks, and security breaches.

So if any of you are good at what you do and want to work for the “good guys”, go give it a try. Apple is trying to ramp up security to protect enterprises who are adopting iPhone 2.0 and more selfishly, protect their own App Store from competition ahem Cydia & Installer. Either way, Apple is getting serious about security and the iPhone.

What do you think?
